By 1770, at least 1,000,000 colonists brewed tea 2x/day

Most of the tea was brought to the colonies by the EAST INDIA COMPANY.

It’s a Tea Thing…

East India Co. buys tea in Asia

Sold tea to the colonists at a

higher price than what they paid

for it

Sold to colonial tea merchants

Parliament passed the Tea

Act, which allowed the East India Co. to sell directly to

the colonists

Many colonists stopped buying British tea to

protest the tax

This made the tea less expensive for colonists to buy

Predictions…Do the colonists start buying tea

again?

3 ships loaded with tea pulled into Boston harbor in November 1773

Sam Adams and the

Sons of Liberty had a plan…On December 16th, they sent a letter to the governor of

Mass. demanding the ships leave the harbor

The governor denied the request, prompting Sam

Adams to say…

“This meeting can do nothing further to save the country”

Page 8: Today we will…

The disguised colonists left the meetinghouse and boarded the

ships

They split open the chests and dumped 342 chests of tea into the harbor

Adams words were a signal, prompting a group of men (disguised as Indians) to burst into the

meetinghouse

“Boston harbor a teapot tonight!

The Mohawks are come”!

the Intolerable Acts because they were so harsh…

Port of Boston

paid for the destroyed tea New Quartering

Act – colonists had to house

soldiers

Customs officials

charged with crimes would

be tried in Britain or CanadaLimit on

Mass. town meetings (1/year)
