What is Biliteracy?
Biliteracy instruction is also known as Dual Immersion. In Biliteracy classrooms, ELLs and non-ELLs receive instruction in English and another language.
A Growing Movement in the US
• The number of US biliteracy programs grew from 260 in 2000 to 2500 in 2014
• As of September 2015, 11 states offer a Seal of Biliteracy endorsement for graduating seniors
• A Seal of Biliteracy endorsement is a credential that is attractive to employers and for college admissions.

Seal of Biliteracy
Why Biliteracy Works for ELLs
• An enrichment model that promotes bilingualism, English proficiency, and academic achievement for all students.
• ELLs are viewed as “emerging bilinguals,” and acquire language differently than monolinguals, using linguistic resources from both languages.
• When students analyze similarities and differences in two languages, their language and literacy skills can exceed those of monolingual children.
Benefits of Biliteracy Instruction• Includes a strong oral language strand in Spanish and English to
enhance literacy and language learning.
• Respects the unique features of Spanish by providing engaging, authentic text and literacy instruction that reflects the internal structures of Spanish phonology, grammar, syntax, and discourse patterns.
• Values and builds upon all the linguistic resources that students have available.
• Develops students’ metalinguistic skills by building cross-language connections between Spanish and English.
• Provides formative and summative assessments that measure
progress on a trajectory toward biliteracy.
Why Biliteracy instead of parallel Spanish?• Rather than provide instruction exclusively in Spanish, a biliteracy
approach gives students a chance to develop literacy skills in both English and Spanish.
• The strategic linguistic resources in the Biliteracy Pathway, when used with ReadyGEN, support what the research shows—when students analyze similarities and differences in two languages, their skills can exceed those of monolingual children.
• The Biliteracy Pathway resources must be used with ReadyGEN Core (English). It is not a stand-alone program.

Blackboard SafeAssign
SafeAssign is a tool used to prevent plagiarism and to create opportunities to help students identify how to properly attribute sources rather than paraphrase. SafeAssign is effective as both a deterrent and an educational tool.
SafeAssign compares submitted assignments against a set of sources to identify areas of overlap between the submitted assignment and existing works.
● Teacher facing only● Ability to pull detailed reports of
similarities with citation of work copied or links to the sites they were taken from
