District Director’s Message

With Christmas fast approaching think about who you can give the gift of Conference or the gift of Confidence through Toastmasters membership to.

In January we will boost Toastmasters, please like and comment on our posts to help them reach more people. We encourage clubs to think about how to turn visitors into members and maintain positive Toastmasters experiences for our guests.

With New Year approaching, make your new year’s resolution to achieve Level 5 in Pathways or join another club and encourage your friends to also achieve their best through Toastmasters too.

A lot of our clubs also allow for online zoom attendance, which can add to your experience and make it easy to join more clubs. Have fun with your Toastmasters journey!

Club Growth Director Update & Christmas Message

Where has the time gone? It only seems like the Hamilton Conference was just yesterday and that I have been through a

whizz bang time experience.

My eyes have been opened to what the District team does for the membership and I have a very high appreciation for our

Division Directors and their teams of amazing Area Directors.

Thanks to Troy, Elo, Peter, Sean, James, Wendy, Jennie and Stephen for all your support and that you and your teams

enjoy the forthcoming Christmas break and have time to recharge your batteries. Please thank your teams on my behalf

for a job well done.

Special thanks to all the clubs for their sterling performance during the first half of the year. My experience at meetings I

have attended so far have been nothing short of magic, and I look forward even more to meetings in the new year.

New Clubs are being chartered and will join the D112 family in the new year, i.e. Magnetism Toastmasters Club and

Karaka Toastmasters Club. Congratulations to Maheeka Ariyapperuma, Jennifer Kerr and Samantha Jung-Fielding for

making their dream of a new club a reality.

Smedley Awards

At the start of the year a challenge was put to all the clubs in D112 to achieve a Smedley Award.

The criteria for this award was to register five new, dual, or reinstated members between August 1 and September 30.

Regional Advisor visit to D112

We were privileged to have had Coral McVean, Region Advisor for Region 12, visit our district in November this year.

Coral has heaps of “Toastmasters” energy. She was able to meet a very full program from the time she arrived to when

she left to visit D72.

Very special thanks to all the clubs that availed themselves of Coral’s visit and I can assure you that she enjoyed the

experience. I would also like to thank Marlene Krone for managing the event for the District.

My personal learnings from Coral’s visit was that, when you get a chance to host such an experienced Toastmaster,

absorb as much from them as possible. It was a pleasure to host Coral during her visit.

Sponsors and Mentors Zoom Sessions

This will commence in the new year and the dates will appear on the District calendar.

The sessions will take place fortnightly on Thursdays starting at 7:00pm and is an open invitation to the existing teams,

PLUS any budding sponsors and mentors looking to form new clubs. Here are the dates to June 2020:

January 16 and 30, February 13 and 27, March 12 and 26, April 9 and 23, May 7 and 21, June 4 and 18.

Club Coach Appointments:

Congratulations to Jun Han Lee, Glenda George, Elizabeth Viljoen, Elo Anajemba, Colin Jackson, Brad Nielsen, Dallas

Macris and Dean Ching Yee for their recent appointments as club coaches.

Club Coach Zoom Sessions:

We will be providing additional zoom sessions for clubs that qualify to have a Club Coach but do not have one now. I am a

believer of self help with District Support. Details will be available in the new year.

Finally have a safe, restful and loving festive break and I hope to see you again in

the new year.

New Clubs

Ponsonby Toastmasters (club in formation)

Ponsonby Toastmasters (club in formation) is a friendly little club with a great spirit that started in October 2019. The group comprises a core of very experienced toastmasters as well as new members who have recently joined up, mostly working professionals from diverse backgrounds. The focus is on providing a nurturing, supportive environment that encourages members to step out of their comfort zone to speak, experiment with different styles or techniques, and hone their presentation skills. We also have excellent speakers who are inspiring role models, whom we can learn a lot from and emulate. We aim to provide honest, practical evaluations that will inspire members to build on their strengths and achieve significant progress, with each speaking opportunity. The club meets at Studio One Toi Tu, 1 Ponsonby Road on alternate Thursdays, 7-8:45pm. There is plenty of parking on street or at the back of the building. We welcome everyone - including current toastmasters who looking to join a second club for more opportunities to speak, to accelerate their speaking progress. For further Info or to RSVP, please contact club sponsors Min Tan or Rachel Lee ([email protected]). Our next meeting is on 16 January 2020. Find us on Facebook, Meet Up, and Neighborly https://www.meetup.com/Ponsonby-Toastmasters/events/266864824/ https://www.facebook.com/Ponsonby-Toastmasters-100601734775369/ Karaka Toastmasters in formation

Karaka Toastmasters in formation met for the first time on 18 September. Exactly 3 months later (at the 7th meeting) on the 11th of December they achieved charter strength plus 2. They also elected the club officers and had several secret ballots as so many people wanted to be club officers! Samantha Jung-Fielding and Jennifer Kerr as club sponsors worked hard on social media including Facebook, Neighbourly, and MeetUp. With help from the club mentors Martin Francis and Hitesh Lad they put posters up, paid for a flyer drop and Toastmaster Laurence Speedy (now the elected club secretary) delivered many local flyers himself. Also thanks to the support from the sponsor clubs, Franklin and Papakura, and everyone who has come along. The club meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at Karaka War Memorial Hall in South Auckland. The next meeting is on 8 January 2020 at 6.45pm for a 7pm start. If you are an experienced Toastmasters using Pathways and would like to assist in mentoring a new member please email Jennifer Kerr ([email protected]). South Auckland Advanced Toastmasters

South Auckland Advanced Toastmasters was created as part of the Innovative

Planning Pathway High Performance Leadership Project by fellow MCBC

Toastmaster Ben Ross with the mission to Advance Your Toastmasters Experience.

The goals of South Auckland Advanced Toastmasters are:

An opportunity to deliver your Level 4 and 5 Pathway Projects and receive

evaluations from experienced Toastmasters drawn from the District

Opportunity for Professionals outside of Toastmasters to evaluate your

Projects (some Pathway projects already require this)

Practice Educationals before they are delivered to regular community clubs

Long Term Goal is to have Toastmasters involved in the Accredited

Speakers Program

Club Committee Email Address

Club Committee, did you know that the District provides your club with an email address that forwards emails to a number

of your club officers? This is so that when Toastmasters International sends emails to Base Camp Managers the

appropriate members receive the emails. Unsure as to what your club address is? Check with your Area Director. More

information will be available in the next Newsletter.

Directors Tip

As a new member, giving a first speech to what is essentially a room of strangers can be a

challenging experience. How about giving that first time Ice Breaker speaker something that

they will never forget, a positive experience that will be with them for the rest of their lives. A

pre-planned standing ovation!

We Wish you All A Very Happy and Prosperous Christmas and New Year!
