On March 17th while most ofthe world was wearing greenand celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, The Marketing Guy wasGREEN WITH ENVY as his District 25 Marketing Teamsnail mailed the 16th new club’s paperwork toToastmasters International forprocessing. The new club is at SBC onFAA Blvd. in Irving. They willbe known as The FAA

Three new clubs should appear. This has been a record breaking year for new clubs. We presently lead the world in marketing points and have three new clubs at International to be processed. Let’s don’t let success go to our heads. Let’s keep our noses to the grindstone and continue the hard work so we can be NUMBER ONE in the world on June 30, 2005.

Education & Training

If you can weave a QUILT, youhave everything you need to bethe best District 25 LieutenantGovernor of Education &Training (LGET) ever! Quality / Integrity - The primaryduty of the LGET is to zealouslyguard the integrity of the Toastmasters program. Everydecision we make, every actionwe take, every service weprovide, and every opportunitywe offer must spring from anunyielding insistence on qualityand value. You - the membersof District 25 - deserve the verybest that the Education &Training team can give. Teamwork - The LGET hasENORMOUS responsibilities -

conferences, officer training, speech contests, educational accomplishments, club success - more than any one human being can accomplish by him or her self. The LGET must recruit a team capable of carrying out the responsibilities of the LGET and helping the District fulfill its obligations to its members. Leadership - It's not enough to build a team. The LGET must also direct and lead the team. The LGET must provide the blueprint for District Success, and give his or her team the authority to turn those blueprints into reality. Through firm resolve, through

encouragement, and throughthe occasional swift kick to theback side (figurativelyspeaking!), the LGET and his team work together to fulfill theeducational mission of theDistrict and in the processmakes the impossible possible! If you can make a QUILT(Quality / Integrity / Leadership /Teamwork) you have what ittakes to be the District 25Lieutenant Governor of Education and Training and toleave a LEGACY of EXCELLENCE.

I can honestly say that Toastmasters has changedmy life. Most tangibly, Idoubled my salary, and I amabout to double it again duein part to the skills that Ihave learned inToastmasters -- and I’m talking about the basic skillsToastmasters teaches.Ability to think on my feet, ease in giving presentationsto both small and largegroups, and elements ofleadership are skills thathave served me well in mycareer path.

Changing Lives by Kathy Hopkins, ATMS/CL, Division A Governor

Toastmasters also teachesyou to think, a skill that wouldseem to come natural, but isone that people rarely use critically. This is the only lifewe have, and I believe that weneed to speak up and actuallylive it. Say what you’re reallythinking! Toastmastersprovides people a way, apath, an instruction book forgetting our thoughts and ideasacross to others. Withoutcommunication – and good communication, mind you –we will struggle in all ourrelationships whether they arepersonal, professional, and

even with the lawn guy. I discovered my knack for persuasion as I explained why I did not want to butcher (cut back) my crepe myrtle trees unlike my neighbors! We are all Toastmasters so obviously we’re convinced of the value of this organization. Our goal is to use what we’ve learned and convey our message and purpose to others who still live outside of this crazy Toastmaster world we’re in!

How Are You Selling Leadership? by Tony Bieniosek, ATMB/CL, Division B Governor

What kind of success are youhaving in getting talented andexcellent people to run fornext term’s officer roles? Ifyou’re not getting a lot ofpositive responses, perhapsit’s because you’re not sellingthe right vision. When you encourage amember to run for aleadership position, do theypicture an imposingresponsibility that requiresmuch time and work, attending boring meetings, tedious clericalresponsibilities, or dealingwith a few challengingpeople? Who wants that?!!

Or, are you offering someone an opportunity to - Learn and refine

leadership and organizational skills?

- Lead a large group of club members to help them improve, achieve and succeed within a definite start and end date? - Develop a broader

network of support and encouragement while gaining new, sincere and talented friends?

- Stretch their skills in a safe place, where it’s OK to make mistakes as long as you learn from it?

Best of all, none of thatcosts a dime more thanyour standard membershipfees! Toastmasters’ is a greatplace to expand leadershipas well as communicationskills. Be sure to encourageprospective candidates about the personal benefitsfrom serving as aToastmaster officer.Members need to see thepositive aspects of what’s init for them and how muchthey and their future teamcan all gain.

The Latest from World Headquarters by Donna H. Groh, Executive Director, Toastmasters International On Saturday, March 12, the website will go live for April renewals - most exciting is that we have adapted the online program so that when adding new members; you can add someone with a start date any time within the last dues period. In other words, if you want to add a new member with a January 2005 start date, and pay their dues for April, you will be able to do so.

Toastmasters Has Helped Me and Toastmasters Can Help You Too!!

by David Watkins, DTM - Division E Governor communication skills and my leadership

skills have helped me survive. I still get raises and bonuses - partially due to the skills I learned in Toastmasters.

Toastmasters has given my career aboost! Toastmasters has helped inboth communication and in leadership- as well as in my personal life. I am avery strong introvert but you might not be able to tell that. This is becauseToastmasters has forced me to stepout of my shell and become moreinvolved (being Division Governor andactually holding council meetings orbeing president of a community club).Today I'm more willing to "bite the bullet"; to call or otherwise interactwith people without procrastinatinglike I used to do. I have worked for two companies thathave experienced numerous layoffs. However, except for one close call, Ihaven't been laid off! I contribute thatlongevity to Toastmasters.

Toastmasters has also helped me feel "good" through community involvement. I have had opportunities to help others grow, to help them reach their potential or goals. Toastmasters has given me the opportunities to do that. I am currently doing a Youth Leadership for a group of learning challenged young adults - for the second time. They liked it so much they wanted me to come back and do it again!! WOW!!!!

Do Toastmasters like to talk? During the new “Talk Up Toastmasters!” membership contest, encourage your club’s members to invite as many guest to your club’s meetings as possible.

Consider conducting a special guest meeting – where you can conduct a regular meeting, but also specifically discuss the benefits Toastmasters members receive as they participate in the program.

Another First! Tri-Area Speech Contest By Don Ferris, DTM, D25 Southern Chair, Marketing

District 25 is not only the #1 rated District inall of Toastmaster International, but weshowed where three areas can successfullyhave a combined contest at the same timeand date. Areas 41, 45 & 46 pulled off something that has never been triedbefore. Area Governors Phyllis Renfrow,Sandra Creech and Jim Cross put their heads together and laid out some very neatplans to schedule the Spring Table Topicsand International Speech Contests held onSaturday, March 19th at the CrestviewChurch of Christ in Waco, Texas.

Another first for District 25; one of our newest clubs, Angels In White Toastmasters, the only prison unit in District 25 wasrepresented by three of their chartermembers, Kathy Tribue, Bonnie Spittler and

Deerdra McCloud. Kathy and Bonnie were contestants and Deerdra was one of thetimers in both contests. All three Toastmasters, along with their counselor,Toastmaster Alice Tippit, were all veryexcited over being given the opportunity toparticipate.

We were very fortunate to have most of theDistrict Officers present at the prestigiousevent. In addition to the aforementionedArea Governors, we were also honored tohave D25 Governor, Lee Alviar, LGET, Dave Himmelstein, LGM, Earl Hill, D25 PR, Rebecca Harvey, D25 Chief Judge MauriceTait, Division D Gov., Shawn Sutherland, other Div D Area Governors, ErnestinaPinones, Candy Robinson and Sharlann

Adams, other notable Division Governors andArea Governors. The morning event Table Topics was handled very well by Toastmaster Randy Hickerson and the afternoon Toastmaster for the International Speech Contest, Toastmaster Carla Gibbs went equally as well. It was a long day, but well worth it. Everybody enjoyed the activities and we feel that the members who won their respective events will represent Area 41, 45 & 46 very well in theDivision D Contest April 16th in Grand Prairie.

Organization is the key to any successfulArea Contest but when combining threeAreas, it is essential. Saturday, March 19,Areas 41, 45 and 46 were the first ever tohold a Tri-Area Speech Contest in Waco,TX. As District Chief Judge for 2004-2005, I made sure to put forms for each contestant, assistant duties and judges in separateenvelopes for the participants. This is agreat tip for any Chief Judge but with thiscontest, it was a tremendous time-saver because of easy distribution. Separatebriefings and different Toastmasters wereused for each contest to preventdisqualification of a contestant should onebe unable to attend both briefings. EveryArea Governor gave their announcementsand recognition of Officers as well as TM and Rookie winners then the Divisionannouncements and District announcementswere made. After the final contest, voteswere counted and winners for each contestwere announced. This was truly a uniqueand exceptional experience by everyone who had the pleasure of attending.

A few key factors to remember when organizing three simultaneous contests: - Coordinate with Contest Chairs in advance to ensure sufficient helpers are assigned. - Two types of contests, two Toastmasters and three sets of Vote Counters. A separate Chief Judge for each Area will also be required. The same judges and timers may be used for both contests and for all Areas. - Provide lunch where the contests are being held so there is no need to leave the facility. This helps anyone who traveled in and provides for networking as well as socializing with other TM members.

Running A Successful Multi-Area Speech Contest By Maurice E. Taitt, DTM, District 25 Chief Judge

- Be sure to confirm all participants one week prior to the contest. Make sure the judges, helpers and contestants know to be present at the start of the first briefing period. - Place all forms in envelopes for each judge, helper and contestant and label them accordingly. This facilitates easy distribution during briefing and keeps the flow moving at an efficient pace. - The Chief Judge should prepare three table topics questions for each area, from which the Toastmaster can select a question for each Area.

Successful Meeting Tips

Here are several meeting ideas for you to try in your club.

• Create a club manual so that everyone knows exactly what each role involves and how they are conducted in your club. Include in the document a sample meeting format and ask that every meeting be conducted the same for a while until your meeting quality has improved.

• Have the VP Education assign roles and produce a monthly schedule in advance. That way you won't have the same people signing-up for the same roles and avoiding others.

• Contact those who have assigned meeting roles a few days in advance to remind them that they have an important function to perform at their meeting. Many clubs divide this contact between the upcoming Toastmaster and the Chief Evaluator so that the burden is not on the VP Education each week.

• Have the Toastmaster of the Day produce the agenda. Since the Toastmaster is responsible for conducting a fun and energized meeting, why not have he or she be totally in charge of putting it together too? That's a learning experience in itself!

• At the end of each meeting, announce who will be leading the next meeting and who is scheduled to speak. Your members will already look forward to the next meeting and those who have a role will be more committed to attending.

In summary, it is very important that you conduct successful meetings. People join clubs that are organized. Existing members stay at clubs that conduct fun but professional meetings. Focus on preparation and establish "role ownership" in your club and your meetings will rise to the next level of effectiveness.

SPOTLIGHT ON REBECCA HARVEY, DTM

Pace of birth: St Louis, Mo. Family: One daughter, Leslie, lives in Austin Occupation: Credit Manager for the Boy Scouts of America

The most interesting job I ever held: Part time DJ and film editor for Armed Forces Radio and Television in Libya North Africa

My heroes are: Daughter Leslie, all people who work thru handicaps and become successful

Guests at my fantasy dinner party would be:

John Ritter, Katherine Hepburn, Abraham Lincoln, John Kennedy, Barry White, Karen Carpenter, Fred Astaire, Cary Grant, Mario Zamora, and Leslie Harvey. What a mixture!!!

My favorite president is: All of them as they have stories you just wouldn’t believe My favorite movie is: Ya Ya Sisterhood The best advice I could give a 20 year old: Never stop learning and save 1/10 of everything you make My trademark cliché or expression: Now what can we do? My last meal would be: Mexican food

My best asset is: My smile. I think it tells about me, open, genuine, friendly, and given freely.

I’m happiest when I’m: Seeing people grow and learn. You can see it in their eyes and the energy is exhilarating.

Behind my back, people say: I don’t know but I hope it is nice. I regret: Not spending enough time with my daughter If I could change one thing about myself, it would be: To have endless energy Current status in Toastmasters DTM The best thing I like about Toastmasters is: The people The worst thing I like about Toastmasters is: The paperwork

How has Toastmaster helped me thus far?

I overcame my fear of speaking and worrying what others may think if I made a mistake. Toastmasters provided a safe environment to learn and practice. I learned everyone has a voice and it should be heard. I have learned there is a better way to convince people of your point of view.

TWENTY OR PLUS FIVE by Lee Alviar, DTM, District 25 Governor Below is a typical club’s DCP Report. By simply reviewing the Total Goals Achieved to Date (in this sample case is 5), you would assume that this club accomplished Distinguished designation. Are they Distinguished? Upon closer review, you will note that this is not the case. Let's review "Member Base (20)" and "Membership to Date (18)." July 1, 2004 this club started with 20 members. For whatever reason, this club is now down to 18 members. In order for a club to be recognized Distinguished or better they must have a net growth of 5 Members or be 20 Members or more. This club is neither at 20 nor have they had a net growth of 5 members. However, they have until June 30th to bring up their membership to 20, thereby reaching the Distinguished designation. Do you know where YOUR club’s membership stands? It would be a shame to mistakenly believe we are Distinguished or better because our goals were met and let a little thing like Membership stand in our way. Stay the course! Be Aware! Invite everyone to YOUR next club meeting today!! *For personal analysis of YOUR clubs standings, please feel free to contact Dave Himmelstein at [email protected].
