Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Let me do and I understand —ConfuCius

Growing up with parents who moved as a way to satisfy their constant desire for change, I quickly understood one fundamental in learning: experience counts a lot more than we give it room for in traditional education. This upbringing framed how I approached university, where I pursued as much applied Marine Biology as my school would allow. Coming to Green School, I felt able to provide an applied learning experience using the environment around me as much as possible. The students have responded well thus far, always encouraging me in attempting to produce as interactive of lessons as possible.

Green Studies (Pre-School, Grade 6 - 8)

Noan Fesnoux

Green studies might as well be called “brown studies” because more often than not we end up nice and dirty by the end of class! Green studies is all about getting dirt under our fingernails and mud between our toes because whenever possible we learn through doing. From following the rice through its life cycle to planting, maintaining and harvesting our classroom gardens to looking after the farm animals the kids are engaged in hands-on projects that provide life skills & implicit knowledge, Luckily we have an amazing campus full of natural abundance which provides limitless opportunities for learning and exploring and just plain having fun in nature! My goal of every lesson is to have the kids experiencing nature in a way that makes them say “wow!”

Green Studies (Grade 1-5)

Matt Shroads

In grade 6 you gotta love water, because in Green Studies that theme rules the year. Part of our mission was to clean and restore the pond area. One school day was used to go through a number of steps in making sure the pond could be cleaned out. The grade 6 students are also trying to improve the pond area, and have proposed a variety of ideas, from waterfalls to rafts.

We Want to help the Bali StarlingS! Grade 2 has been looking after the Bali Starlings all year long. We visit them, study their behavior and needs and on occasion enter their enclosure in order to feed the birds with the mealworms that we have been breeding in our classroom just for this purpose! Early in the year the mealworms proved to be too squiggly and squirmy for most of the kids to handle but now most all the kids fight for their turn to feed them to the birds!

Snake charming 101! Its always a highlight for the primary year students when Pak Ron Lilly brings his non-venomous reptilian friends to school for show and tell. This reticulated python is a beauty! When the kids aren’t busy learning how to prevent snake encounters and stay safe when they do come across a snake in the wild, they also get to have a positive, safe and thrilling experience with live snakes! The best of both worlds!

green School Student rice farmerS! This year grades 1-8 learned what it takes to become rice farmers by getting down and dirty, often! Besides learning the valuable skills of how to plant rice seeds, transplant seedlings, proper pest management and harvesting techniques, we also learned how to conduct a proper Balinese rice ceremony. This year the kids participated in 3 ceremonies planting, flowering & harvesting) led by the Indonesian staff which included proper offerings, attire and of course, prayer! Thanks to the whole community for participating in our fantastic rice harvest celebration!

cacing! cacing! cacing! In order to get grade 1-5 vermicomposting bins up and running we had to look for the most important ingredient of all.... the worms! (Cecing in Bahasa) Each time the kids found a worm that had to exclaim “Cacing!” We searched under rocks, we searched the campus mudpit, and then finally we found the gold mine in the cow poo in the farm and the nearby compost heap. Cacing! Cacing! Cacing!

Teaching Grade 4 allows me to further expand my knowledge in subjects that I’ve already spent a great deal of time learning and experiencing, and as a teacher I get to revisit this subject matter and draw up new alternatives based on new discoveries. I feel that Green School provides me with so much room to be creative and autonomous each day. Life as a Grade 4 teacher has given me a sense of pride and unfolded a new series to my existence. The proudest moments are when thechildren make special things for me!

This is my first year at Green School. My class is dynamic, flexible and learning orientated. I am using a child centred and holistic teaching style in my class which was developed by Alan Wagstaff. I have been a teacher my whole life and am vocationally minded about education. The most memorable thing about this year was connecting children from 16 different countries with each other and building a harmonious, collaborative and co-operatve learning space. I have also enjoyed learning about and sharing Balinese culture. I will always remember the rapid development of literacy skills of the non-english speakers and how the new teaching style resonated so strongly with all the children.
