DAISY AND VIOLET HILTON

Daisy and Violet Hilton were born in 1908 in Brighton, England. Their mother sold the girls to midwifeMary Hilton. By the time they were three years old, they were appearing in circuses, carnivals, and fairs. Thetwins described Hilton as being a cruel woman, never showing any affection and subjecting them to horribleabuse. When the twins were in their teens, Mary Hilton died, leaving the twins to the guardianship of herdaughter Edith and Edith’s husband Meyer Meyers. With Meyers acting as their agent, he booked them ontothe Orpheum vaudeville circuit, keeping all of their earnings for himself. By the time Daisy and Violet were 15,they were among the highest paid performers in the nightclub and vaudeville circuit, although the girls neverreceived any of their earnings and longed for freedom.

Cruelly mistreated and virtually enslaved, Daisy and Violet had a chance meeting in 1931 with a lawyer inSan Antonio, TX, who agreed to help. A trial was held and at the age of twenty-three, the twins were freed by acourt order to embark on a career of their own as the “Hilton Sisters Revue.” Blessed with beauty, the Hiltontwins also possessed an array of talents: they performed acrobatic tricks; played many musical instruments; andhad marvelous singing voices. Through the help of Harry Houdini, Daisy and Violet developed the ability to

dissociate from one another so that they could each have some much-needed privacy. Increasingly public but unsuccessful marriages (onebefore 100,000 spectators) and a brief film career in the B-grade films Freaks (1932) and Chained for Life (1951) marked their heyday. Thetwins eventually settled in Charlotte, NC, working as supermarket checkout clerks. They died of the flu in 1969 within hours of one another.

Interesting Note: Pictured is a souvenior postcard of Violet and Daisy Hilton circa 1920. While in real life Violet was on the left as onefaced the twins, the girls insisted on being called Daisy and Violet. When writer Bill Russell first saw a photo of the girls, the image wasreversed causing him to believe that Daisy was on the left. When Russell learned the truth, he decided to keep Daisy on the left in the playto adhere with the girls wishes and to make it easier for the audience.

FREAKSHOWS AND SIDESHOWS

Following an elusive dream of success and happiness, the Hiltons eagerly pursued a track that took them from small-time freakshowsthrough traveling sideshows and the vaudeville circuit to film stardom. As far as they ran, they really just found extensions of the sameworld, part of the shifting landscape of American popular culture. Freakshows and sideshows date back as far as Renaissance fairs and thetraveling medicine exhibitions of colonial America, but truly started to come into their own in the 1840s. Showman P.T. Barnum com-bined the popular interest in museums and scientific oddities with entertainment in opening the American Museum in New York City. With so-called “human curiosities” chief among its exhibits, magic shows, demonstrations, and other diversions, the museum set thestandard for the freakshow as fashionable family entertainment. By the 1920s and into the 30s, the sideshow had become a standardaccompaniment to the traveling circus, offering an array of either wildly exotic “specimens” of supposedly vanished tribes and undiscov-ered races, or examples of “nature’s jokes” — dog-men, bearded ladies, giants, dwarves, pinheads, armless and legless children, and Siamesetwins. These were the “freaks”: for one thin dime, offering the chance to stare at our worst fears about ourselves and our own differences.
