SETTING THE NEEDLESee Fig. 3. Raise the needle bar A to its highest point, turning wheel toward you by hand. Then loosen the needleclam p screw B and the needle clamp C will open itself. rPlace needle (flat side to right) in the needle clamp and rpush it upward as far as it will go into the needle clamp hole, fastening the needle clamp securely with a screw driver.
WINDING THE BOBBIN FDisengage the hand wheel (5, Fig. 4) from the stitchingmechanism by turning the clutch 6 toward you or counter-clockwise. Place a spool of thread on one of the spool pins, lead thread through the front thread guide on the arm, anddown through the tension disc (7, Fig. 5) at the base of themachine. Run end of thread through a hole in the bobbinedge and place bobbin B on spindle of bobbin winder 4,fitting the notch on bobbin over small pin on spindle. Pushbobbin winder pulley against hand wheel. Hold thread endloosely and start machine slowly. Bobbin will be releasedautomatically when it is filledTurn clutch away from you until sewing mechanism isagain engaged so that needle moves when you turn the handwheel.
Fig. 4 Break off loose thread end used to start the winding.
7THREADING THEBOBBIN CASE
Step 1 (illustrated in Fig. 6).Hold bobbin case between thumband forefinger of left hand, so thatthe slot in the edge of the bobbincase is on top. Take the bobbinbetween thumb and forefinger ofright hand so that the thread ontop leads from left to right. Step2. Insert bobbin into bobbin case, pull the thread into the slot of thebobbin case as shown in Fig. 7, anddraw it under the tension springand into the fork-shaped openingof the spring as shown in Fig. 8.

PLACING BOBBIN rCASE IN SHUTTLE
Raise needle bar to p,highest position, and lifthinged cover plate. (See r11, Fig. 1. Hold the bobbincase latch, (D),Fig.9,between the thumb and rforefinger of the left hand,
rwith at least three inchesof thread running from rthe top of the bobbin case to the right. Insert and
pcenter the bobbin case on the stud of the shuttle Ibody, (C). Be sure the bobbin case finger, (E, isopposite the shuttle race notch, (A. Press the bobbin Icase B) into the shuttle as far as possible until latch Lcatches on the center post of the shuttle. THENrelease the bobbin case latch, (D). Press bobbincase again after latch has been released to makesure the bobbin case is locked securely in place.Close the cover plate.

inches of thread through needle.Hold the end of upper thread loosely and turn hand
wheel toward you until the needle goes all the way downand comes back up. A loop (Fig. 11) will be formed overthe upper thread which then can be pulled out straight.Place both thread ends under the slot of the presser footand draw toward the back of the machine, leaving boththreads three or four inches long.
SETTING THE STITCH LENGTH
The length of the stitch is regulated by the dial, 5,shown in Fig. 12. Near 0 is the shortest stitch and 4 isthe longest, but the dial may be set at any spot betweenmarkings for a variety of lengths. Turn the dial to theleft to lengthen and to the right to shorten the stitch. The number stitch length you choose appears above thecenter line on the reverse button R.

SEWING IN REVERSEWhen you wish to sew backward to tie the threads at the beginning or end of a seam, press in the button R, Fig. 12, as far as it will go. The machine will sew backward as long rs the button is held in.
ADJUSTING THE TENSIONSAlways adjust the upper tension with the presser foot down, as the tension is automaticallyreleased when it is raised. To increase the tension on the upper thread, turn dial (Fig. 13)to the right, or clockwise. To decrease, turn to the left, or away from you. The higher±he number on the dial the tighter the tension. Before adjusting lower tension be sure that the machine isthreaded properly. When necessary to change the bobbin tension, turn small screw (Fig. 14; on side of the bobbin case clockwiseto tighten, counterclockwise to loosen. When the upper and under tensions are properly balanced,a perfect stitch will be formed with both threads interlockingin fabric (Fig. 15).When the upper tension is too tight, the lower thread ispulled up over the upper thread which is lying flat on the fabric(Fig. 16). When the upper tension is too loose, the upper threadorms loops over the lower thread lying flat on the fabric (Fig. 17. Fig. 13

ADJUSTING PRESSURE AND FEEDING OF FABRIC
General Sewing. Usually for normal sewing the pressure barcap or darner release, 20, Fig. 18, is at its lowest position and the
drop feed knob is turned to ‘HI” position, Fig. 19.
Sewing Thin or Light Weight Fabrics. When lighter pressure
is required to sew satisfactorily on thin silk or filmy material, the
pressure cap should be about halfway down. Release all the way
by pressing the snap lock, A, Fig. 20, and then press cap B downagain to halfway spot. Lower the feed slightly by turning theblack dot on the knob to “LO” position. Fig. 19
Darning and Mending. In order to move the fabric freely inany direction for darning and mending, release the pressure capB completely by pressing down on the snap lock, A, Fig. 20.Turn the knob to ‘DN” position, which drops the feed wellbelow the needle plate. To return feed to normal, return knobto ‘HI”.
PREPARING TO SEWHave take-up lever at highest point before starting to sew.Do not try to help the feeding by pulling the material as this may Fig. 20deflect the needle and cause it to break.NEVER run machine without material under the presser foot.Place material and threads in position under the presser foot and lower the presser foot.Turn the hand wheel toward you until the needle is at its highest point. You are nowready to begin sewing. By having the needle at its highest point, it is not necessary to touchthe hand wheel to start the machine. You merely press the control. The speed of the machineis regulated by increasing or decreasing the amount of pressure exerted on the control.
REMOVING THE WORKBe sure to stop the machine when the thread take-up lever and needle bar are at thehighest position. Now raise the presser foot and draw the fabric back and to the left,

CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF YOUR MACHINE
HOW TO OIL YOUR MACHINE
—
% /
Fig. 22
Your machine should be oiled occasionally to keep Fig. 23
it operating smoothly-how often depends on the amount of sewing you do. Before oiling theupper part of the sewing unit at points indicated by arrows in Fig. 22 turn hand wheel towardyou until the take-up lever is at its lowest point.Avoid over - oiling - only a drop is needed at each point. To oil parts under the bed of the machine, tip the unit back on its hinges and apply adrop of oil at each point indicated in Fig. 23.HOW TO REPLACE LIGHT BULB
(See 21, Fig. 1) Pull light bracket down by hooking index finger tip on curved pieceunder light bulb. Unscrew bulb and replace with bulb of same size, which is available fromyour sewing machine dealer.

15HOW TO CHANGE THE BELT
If it should ever become necessary to replace the belt on your machine, the hand wheelmust first be loosened and moved out.To do this, follow these instructions:1. Remove clutch nut A in center of wheel by taking out the small screw B near the edge,Fig. 24. Turn nut counter - clockwise until it can be lifted off.2. Before moving the hand wheel, note the position of the washer, C, Fig. 25, which fits underthe clutch nut. It may fall out when you are changing the belt.3. Pull hand wheel away from the machine carefully, Fig. 26. Pull it just far enough to makethe grooved section which holds the belt accessible.
4. Slide old belt over hand wheel and over pulley on the end of motor.5. Slide new belt into grooved section and over motor pulley.6. Push hand wheel back against the machine.7. If washer C has fallen off, replace so that the lips D are pointing toward the clutch nut.8. Replace nut and tighten screw securely.
After doing this, turn the clutch toward you to disengage the sewing mechanism. If theneedle still moves up and down as you turn the hand wheel, again remove the clutch nut.Give the washer a half turn and replace the nut.
.
CLEANING AND OILING THE SHUTTLE
See Figs. 27 and 28
The stitch forming mechanism occasionally becomes
clogged with loose threads and lint. This will interfere
with the efficient operation of the machine. Cleaning
and removal of the lint will safeguard the performance.
To remove the shuttle assembly, proceed as follows:
1. Turn the balance wheel until the needle reaches its
highest position. Tilt head back on its hinges.
2. Remove bobbin case A), Fig. 27.
3. Turn the two shuttle race cover clamps B downward
________
and remove the shuttle race cover C) and shuttle
body D4. Clean the shuttle race, the shuttle, and shuttle race cover by removing all threads, lint, etc.
5. Apply a drop of oil with finger tip to outer edge of shuttle.
When the cleaning has been completed, proceed as follows to replace the shuttle assembly:
1. Turn the balance wheel until the needle reaches its highest
position.
2. Place shuttle body, D , against shuttle driver and adjust
into position.C \
3. Replace shuttle race cover, (C , fitting pin at lower edge
into notch, and lock into position with shuttle race cover
clamps, B , making certain the clamps have been snapped
securely into position. Fig. 28

CHECK UP FOR SMOOTH SEWING
Although your sewing machine is designed for maximum efficiency, should any of thefollowing difficulties occur they can be remedied with minor adjustments.Upper Thread Breaks
Be sure needle is inserted properly.Check on correct way to thread machine.Use correct needle size for thread.Do not have upper tension too tight.
Lower Thread Breaks
Check correct method of threading bobbin case.Be sure lower tension is not too tight.
Needle Breaks
Do not tug or pull on the fabric while sewing as this will bend and eventually breakthe needle.Be sure presser foot is firmly attached to bar.
Skipped StitchesDo not use a blunt or bent needle.Insert needle correctly.
Use correct needle size for thread.
Be sure pressure on foot is sufficient when sewing heavy fabrics.
Stitches Loop
Make sure tensions are properly balanced and that machine is threaded correctly
Machine Binds
Clean thread, dust and lint from hook, shuttle and race.
If condition continues, it may be that the machine is gummy with oil. Apply kerosene to
oil holes, run rapidly for a while, and wipe dry. Then lubricate again with fine sewingmachine oil.
