message from President / cEo

So many Reasons to vote “no” on county charterby Debbie Fromdahl, President/CEO

As our members are aware, the Roseburg Area Chamber of Commerce strongly opposes a proposed charter expected to appear on the November 7 ballot. This charter would drastically change Douglas County government, and not in a good way.

Much like initiatives and measures opposed in the past, your chamber will be a resource for information to our businesses and their employees. Check out future “Chamber News” member emails for updates and information to help defeat this proposal.

Here are a few reminders of why the Roseburg Area Chamber opposes the proposed charter:

• county administrator Will make Decisions behind closed Doors An un-elected county administrator will be allowed to make major county decisions behind closed doors out of the public’s view, unlike our current system where our County Commissioners are accountable to the voters who elected them.

• Extreme Environmentalists are behind the new charterExtreme environmentalists are behind the proposed county charter. It is their only way to gain more influence to advance their anti-logging and extreme environmental agenda driven by activist out of Portland.

• Will cost taxpayers over $400,000 in tax revenueThe proposed county charter will cost taxpayers over $400,000 more in tax revenue because of the need to increase the size of county staff to manage county departments and decisions, currently managed by our elected Commissioners.

• sheriff Hanlin’s Hands Would be tied Under Proposed charterThe proposed county charter will significantly reduce the authority of Sheriff Hanlin as he tries to enforce the US Constitution, state and local laws in our county.

• Focus is on roseburg, rural Douglas county communities are Left outThe proposed county charter places most of the focus on Roseburg and ignores the rural parts of Douglas County, especially our coastal communities.

PLEasE join Us in voting “no” on mEasUrE 10-159.

The chamber is calling on our members to make additional contributions to the Roseburg Area Chamber Political Action Committee (RACPAC) over the next several months. The chamber continues to strengthen business through the PAC. If was formed to support pro-business issues and to oppose those initiatives and measures the chamber believes is harmful to local business. The RACPAC also continues to support business-friendly candidates, endorsed by the chamber board of directors.

Current RACPAC fundraising will go to support pro-business positions during the next three elections in Douglas County. Individuals, businesses or nonprofit organizations can make PAC contributions at any time. Please consider a contribution, joining many local businesses and individuals who have said, “Yes” to the Roseburg Area Chamber PAC.

Advertising peaks visitor interest and numbersThe momentum of the Roseburg Area Chamber of Commerce market ing, adver tising and branding campaigns continue to increase interest and draw visitors to the area. Campaigns designed to drive perspective visitors to the Visit Roseburg website have done exactly that— setting record numbers.

Within the first seven months of this year website statistics are already surpassing numbers from 2016. The website has received over 6.5 million hits and has seen almost a 20% increase in the number visitors to the site—all in less than a year.

Comparison of website statistics along with other key matrix from the past several years shows continuous growth. These numbers help measure the successful promotion of Roseburg and the Land of Umpqua by the chamber and have increased the transient lodging taxes (TLT) collected by the city of Roseburg year after year. As a result of the nearly 40% increase in TLT dollars from 2013 to 2016, it is now possible for the chamber to engage in year-round promotional campaigns to drive tourism in Roseburg and throughout Douglas County.
