To plan and design a castle for your protection

Task:

• You are the Earl of Cumberland and have been given the task of building a castle to protect and control the local population who are a little hostile…

What do you have to do?

1. Choose a place to build your castle…remember you need to choose somewhere that provides a good DEFENSIVE POSITION and also is easy to build on

2. Design and plan your castle…(materials; curtain walls; battlements; barbican; towers; guard tower; murder holes; arrow loops; portcullis; drawbridge; moat)

3. Work out the cost of building your castle

Location, Location, Location!

• You have sent your surveyor out to find a suitable place to build your castle. He has come up with 3 possible locations…

Location 1 – Steep, high ground providing a good defensive position but difficult to transport heavy items up to the top

£1000

Location 2 – A gently sloping hill with a river near by

£300

Location 3 – Flat land set in a river meander

£600

Your castle…What have you chosen?

Why have you chosen this? What changes have you made? Why?

LOCATION

Defensive Features

Planning your castle…

• Using the diagram of the castle plan the layout and defensive features you wish your castle to have

• Remember you want to make your castle as secure as possible but it also have to look impressive so all the other Nobles are jealous of your wealth and power!

Ooops!

• You’ve just received some bad news…the King needs to wage a war against the French and has put up the taxes

• You want to show that you are a loyal subject to your King so you pay the extra tax and also offer some extra money to keep the King on your side

• This however has meant that you now have to build your castle to a budget of £2,000!

How much will it cost?

• You have been given a quote by a local stone mason for each of the different defensive features you wanted to include…

• You need to work out how much your “ideal” castle would cost to build and then make sure you bring it in on or over budget!
