February has been a busy month –
aren‘t they all? February 18 was National
Battery Day – yup, that is a real thing. The
Lions used it to remind people that they col-
lect spent VEHICLE batteries for recycling.
Just drop them at the clubhouse drop spot or
ask for a pickup by phoning 204-824-2457.
You can also message us on Facebook at the
Wawanesa Lions Club page.
We are pleased that the electronic sign
is again working. If you have some informa-
tion to put on the sign, please send a private
message to our Facebook page with the infor-
mation or phone Brittany at 204-824-2932.

As winter winds down, yes I know there is
plenty of winter left, but the time of continual
bitter cold has passed. Many people have taken
holidays in warmer climates. They have made an
effort to take holidays at this time of year to en-
joy the heat, when it is cold here.
I attended a recent Men‘s Discipleship
weekend. It was my first time at such an event,
but many of the men made a point of taking time
off work to grow in their faith, with several days
of intentional Bible teaching and had done this
for several years. They saw the benefit in their
lives and in their marriages.
As a pastor, I may seem like a broken re-
cord when I tell others they need to read their
Bible. The truth is there are many ways to grow
in faith and not just by reading the Bible or de-
votionals. The point is to be intentional to grow.
With the season of Lent approaching, this is a
time to be intentional about reflecting on the
events that took place, leading up to the crucifix-
ion and resurrection of Jesus and the sacrifice
made for each one of us. We will continue with
our series in Hebrews, except for Palm Sunday
and Easter Sunday. We will be having a Good
Friday service too.
A Community Prayer Night will be March
26, 7:00 pm, at Lucy‘s Flowers & Gifts. All are
welcome.

Lillian Marie
(nee Dixon)
At home, in the
early hours of February
12, 2020, surrounded by
family, Lillian left us to
be joined with her hus-
band Roy (1985). She was raised on a prai-
rie farm in Methvan, Manitoba, with sib-
lings William, Ron, Mervin, Doreen and
Joyce. As an educated young woman, she
worked as a medical lab technician.
She met her husband and moved to
Toronto in 1954 and raised four children,
Lorrie (Dave), Susan (Bruce), Sandy (Phil)
and Andrew. She was a very proud grand-
mother and great-grandmother, with pic-
tures all around her.
Life was busy as foster parents to
over 50 children. Mom was happiest with
dirty hands in her garden and has left that
legacy to us. Later, she became interested
in family history and while gaining impres-
sive computer skills, has left us with won-
derful stories and memories of a dear, life-
long friend, Jean Ford, from England.
While we are saddened by her loss,
we know she has other places to be. A life
well lived! A celebration of life will be
held in the summer. In lieu of flowers,
please make a donation close to your heart.

WAWANESA WOMEN’S
CLUB: Thank you to Clayton and
Wendy Kunzelman of Trickle Creek
Sleigh Rides for hosting the Wawanesa
Women‘s Club at their farm for the February
20 meeting (on the third Thursday of the
month!) When we arrived, the horses were
hitched up, waiting to pull us in a covered ca-
boose with a woodstove to keep us warm in-
side. We enjoyed the view along the river, up
and down some little hills and through the trees
looking through large, sparkling clean, plexiglass
windows! After the tour, we really enjoyed
meeting all of the horses and other animals while
Clayton and Wendy took us for the barn
tour. We would like to thank them especially for
their wonderful hospitality along with the use of
their cozy, little club house, which they also had
warmed up with a fire. Everything was set up for
us to enjoy our tourtiere supper and our monthly
meeting in good old-fashioned style.

DECOCK: On Saturday Feb-
ruary 1, 2020 at the Brandon
Regional Health Center in his
85th year, Marcel Lionel
(Sonny) Decock of
Wawanesa, MB., passed away
peacefully following a brief
illness.
Marcel was born on
August 30, 1935 at Hartney,
MB, and at the age of four, moved with his parents,
Marcel Sr. and Juliet (Marcil) Decock who have pre
-deceased him, to a farm in the Municipality of Oak-
land near Wawanesa, MB. He lived on this farm
until ten days prior to his passing. He is survived by
his fiancée Judy Montgomery of Wawanesa, and his
sister Rachelle Prince of Los Angeles, California, as
well as numerous cousins in both Canada and the
USA and dear friends and neighbors.
Marcel received his education at the Souris-
bourg (Methven) and Wawanesa schools. He would
often reminisce about walking to school in the win-
ter with newspapers around his feet to keep the
snow from coming through the holes in his boots.
He was an excellent student and those who got his
textbooks after him would notice that there was not
a mark anywhere on the pages, they were always in
excellent condition.
Farming was Marcel's life. He poured his
heart, soul and sweat into his land. His machinery
and vehicles were his children, carefully tended to,
kept well repaired, meticulously cleaned, and faith-
fully stored out of the elements. Marcel was known
to tell people who drove into his yard in dirty vehi-
cles that they should get them washed! You could
eat off the floor of his vehicles, they did not last
long on a car lot when they were traded in. People
knew that any vehicle previously owned by Marcel
was a good deal!
Marcel's yard was always well groomed,
grass cut, trees trimmed and buildings painted. He
often put himself at risk when he was trimming his
trees or painting his barn, by having a ladder in the
bucket of his front end loader and reaching unsafely
above his head when no one was around. He was not
immune to getting stitches in his arm from a slip of
his chainsaw. He was a fiercely independent man,
but was always willing to help his neighbors, when
called upon.
Marcel was very mechanically inclined and
loved anything that had a motor in it. He took great
pride in restoring old tractors, stripping them down to
the bare bones and rebuilding them into "as good as
new" condition. He often attended the Austin Thresh-
erman's Reunion. He also had a love of airplanes,
putting together many models and collecting books on
flight. It was his dream to become a pilot. Perhaps
now he will get his "wings".
Marcel was a longstanding member of the
Brandon Aviation Museum. He was a regular blood
donor for many years and a supporter of numerous
charities.
Marcel was a bird lover, except for crows and
magpies. He had numerous feeders in his yard for
chickadees and hummingbirds. He would go to ex-
treme measures with pieces of tin to prevent the
dreaded squirrels and raccoon's from stealing the
seeds. Many a pesky critter met their demise after
being lured into a trap baited with marshmallows!
Marcel was a wise and learned man, a vora-
cious reader and researcher. If he didn't know some-
thing, he would look things up until he got an answer.
The internet was a valuable resource to him.
Marcel was a very private man, he played his
cards close to his chest. He was a savvy accountant
and had the mind of a stockbroker! Every penny
earned and spent was accounted for. Before anything
was purchased, Marcel knew exactly how much it
was worth and would not be persuaded to pay a penny
more. Many a deal fell through if Marcel did not get
his price. He was not comfortable in crowds, but on a
one to one basis he could converse for hours on any
topic, with anyone from any walk of life. He was a
very observant individual who had the uncanny abil-
ity for sizing people up and he was usually bang on!
Marcel was very much a part of Judy's family.
He attended baptisms, graduations, birthday parties,
weddings ,and Christmas dinners! Somehow, he sur-
vived the chaos and would hold newborn babies, fix
vehicles, and lend a hand or give advice, only when
asked to. He enjoyed helping Judy's Dad restore an
old Massey tractor and transported it to many local
fairs, parades and the Austin Thresherman's Reunion.
Many a card game was played with Marcel around
Judy's kitchen table. He always enjoyed and appreci-
ated a home cooked meal that he didn't have to prepare
himself. Sunday drives across the line to visit cousins,
attending fall suppers in the area and exploring the
countryside, were enjoyable times for Judy and Mar-
cel! He will be missed by many.
Judy would like to express her appreciation and
thanks to Dr. Kaiser and staff of the Assiniboine Cen-
ter in Brandon for their excellent care of Marcel during
his final days. Your kindness, time and professionalism
will never be forgotten. Judy will be forever grateful to
Marcel's wonderful neighbors for their help and sup-
port during this difficult time.

―You were always there when we needed you
No task too great or small,
With a loving heart and a willing hand
For us you did them all.
Thanks for the years you gave us,
And for the times we shared,
We only pray when you left us
You knew how much we cared.
God saw you getting tired
When a cure was not to be,
He put His arms around you
And said, ―Come unto Me.‖

where he went. Once when he was ice fishing, Travis went into the fishing shack and found him reading his book and he had not even put a line in the water. Dad was always interested in farming and had a small hobby farm for a few years, but later would help his father-in-law Ter-rick and then his son Brad combine. He was very particular about his garden, spending hours every day watering and weeding and in the past few years helping his grand-daughter Regan with her garden. When they lived next to the Senior`s housing in Wawanesa, he had a box near the back lane where he would put a few fresh veggies every day for anyone that wanted to help themselves. Dad kept busy helping out his boys running for parts or build-ing supplies or helping move equipment. The last few years in the winter he was really enjoy-ing some time at the rink watching his great granddaughter Ivy and great grandson Terrick play hockey. Sunday was his favorite day of the week. Every Sunday some or all of his kids, grand-daughters and great grandkids would show up at the house for a visit and a treat. Mom said he would try and guess how many would show up that particular day. It will be hard to see his empty chair when we gather for "Sunday Cof-fee". A Celebration of Neil's life was held on Tuesday February 4, 2020 at 2:00 pm in the Wawanesa Centennial Hall with Shirley McBur-ney officiating. A family graveside service took place at the Wawanesa Cemetery prior to the service. Friends that so desire, memorial dona-tions can be made in Neil's memory to the Wawanesa Minor Sports, Box 91, Wawanesa MB R0K 2G0. Passed away at the Glen-boro Health Centre on Wednesday January 29, 2020 at the age of 88 years, Neil Martin "Dozer" Cline, of Wawanesa MB.
Neil leaves to mourn his passing his lov-ing wife Joan (nee Hamilton), daughters Laurie Cline and Pam Cline both of Brandon, sons Brad (Sheila) Cline, Perry (Heather) Cline and Travis Cline (Gail Feser) all of Wawanesa; six grand-children Ashley (Mitch), Regan, Marisa (Noah) Jena (Randy), Cali (Kyle) and Brett; seven great grandchildren Sienna, Ivy, Terrick, Bella, Lowe, Lincoln and Mav as well as numerous extended family & friends. Neil was predeceased by his parents Lewis & Ada Cline, brothers Earl (Clara), Boyd (Agnes), sisters Mae (Ernie) Fortier, Phyllis (Herman) Johnson, Dora (Albert) Thomas & Anne (John) Thomas. Dad's favorite pastimes growing up in Belmont were baseball and hockey. He played ball with the Belmont A's and was proud to be one of the pitchers in 1952 when the team won the Central Manitoba Baseball Championship. In 1953 he was offered a job at the creamery in Souris and joined the Souris Cardinal Team who went on to win the Central Manitoba Champion-ship that year. Both teams were inducted to the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame. The nickname Dozer started in his early baseball days because of his pitching, they say he hurled the ball like a bulldozer. When he started his job with Modern Dairies in Brandon (where he worked for the next 28 years) the family moved to Nesbitt where he played ball with the "Treesbank Ti-gers". As his sons Brad, Perry and Travis started playing sports he turned to coaching Little League Baseball in Nesbitt and hockey in Wawanesa. Dad enjoyed hunting, ice fishing, trapping or golfing in his spare time. He was an avid reader and would take a book with him every-

The Wawanesa Community Founda-
tion Inc., in cooperation with the Sipiweske
Museum Inc., are delighted to participate in
this outstanding opportunity for our com-
munity. The Manitoba Government has
allocated $5,000,000 to be distributed
through the Manitoba Heritage Trust Pro-
gram (MHTP). The program provides an
extra dollar for every two dollars raised.
The goal is to assist the SIPIWESKE Mu-
seum (a designated Manitoba Heritage
Building), and includes the St. John the
Divine Anglican Church -Rounthwaite
1882, (which is now a designated Manitoba
Heritage Building and wayside chapel,
added to the Museum grounds by dedicated
volunteers), in ensuring long term sustain-
ability into the future.
All monies raised would be placed
into The Wawanesa Foundation Inc. in per-
petuity, with the resulting annual income
available for the Sipiweske Museum Board
to utilize to maintain a first-class heritage
facility. To date, with the matching stretch
funding, the Sipiweske Heritage Fund has
already reached a total of nearly $25,000,
and we are very grateful to our donors and
the support received, as we continue in our
drive to $75,000. (which is the maximum
offered by the matching grant program
presently).
The Wawanesa Foundation Inc. has
been in operation for over 25 years, with
total assets nearing half a million dollars,
returning nearly $20,000. in grants to im-
portant community projects in 2019. This
is the first Operational Fund established to
help ensure our volunteers, so dedicated to
looking after our Oakland-Wawanesa and
surrounding community heritage sites, are
able to focus more on the museum, and
less on full time fundraising to sustain our
heritage!
A 50% matching grant does not arise
often, and a $1,000 donation with the
charitable donation credit rate of 46%, not
only benefits the community forever in the
amount of $1,500, but ends up costing the
donor as little as $540 after the Tax Credit.
―It‘s the most significant contribution
from a funding perspective that the Prov-
ince of Manitoba has made … as incentive
funding; there hasn‘t been anything like
this. This program is designed to support
the long-term sustainability of museums
and archives in Manitoba.‖
Help our museum Board volun-
teers. Look for Donor pledge forms in
the mail shortly. Anyone wishing for
more details, please contact Glenn
McGregor at (204) 824-2064 or Leonard

information on the Heritage Trust Pro-
gram.
