AppleThe Apple Computer Company (stock ticker

symbol APPL) was established in 1976 by SteveJobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne andincorporated one year later. In 2007, the companyremoved the word computer from its name toaccurately reflect its move into the consumerelectronics business. During its formative years,there were many exciting new products andcertainly many difficult times.

During the 1990s, on the verge of a severedownward business trend and crippling financiallosses, Jobs sensed the need for Apple to changeand redefine itself. Was Apple prepared for anenvisioned turnaround? The short answer: yes, ithad to make changes. In fact, Steve Jobs evenpartnered with an old business competitor, BillGates at Microsoft. Then in 1998, Apple unveileda breakthrough product, the iMac computer whichsold over 6 million units, thus saving thecompany’s future and helping to establish Jobs’legacy.

As a result of these and other changes, Applenow boasts the second largest marketcapitalization (defined as its share price times thenumber of outstanding shares) of any company inthe United States. Today, Apple might bedescribed as a company in the middle of avisionary revolution. Perhaps one of the keyelements that started this extraordinary changefor Apple can be found in one of Steve Jobs’classic presentations at an annual meeting ofcompany stockholders. In his comments, Jobssaid that Apple must “think differently and expressthat in our products.”

Consider for a moment the following quotationfrom Mr. Jobs and substitute the word“Freemasonry” for Apple. “When I hire reallysenior people, competence is the ante. They haveto be really smart, but the real issue for me iswhether or not they going to fall in love withApple. If they fall in love with Apple, everythingelse will take care of itself. They’ll want to dowhat’s best for Apple, not what’s best for them.”

Certainly, the Masonic fraternity is a muchdifferent organization than Apple. We obviouslyhave more members than Apple has employees.But, in order to prepare for the future, theMasonic fraternity must also have a revolutionaryvision.

In preparation for this turnaround, our Masonicleaders must understand that we have to befocused on our most valuable asset – ourmembers. The fraternity’s focus on the perfectionof ritual by its Grand Officers (known in somecircles as ritual police), charities which benefit thesecular world at the expense of the needs of ourown members, and our preoccupation with realestate issues are hardly the elements of avisionary revolution for any company, much lessthe Masonic fraternity.

Steve Jobs has been a very dynamic engineerand marketing guru. His real successes, however,have resulted from his practical skill inunderstanding why Apple had to change and toevolve.

As part of the development process of thisrevolutionary Masonic vision and the emphasis onthe distinctive worth of each member, we mightagain draw wisdom from these words from Steve:

“Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, therebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in thesquare holes – the ones who see thingsdifferently. They’re not fond of rules. You canquote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilifythem, but the only thing you can’t do is ignorethem because they change things. They push thehuman race forward, and while some may seethem as the crazy ones, we see genius, becausethe ones who are crazy enough to think that theycan change the world are the ones who do.”

Some day, members of the Masonic fraternitywill look back at the beginning of the 21st centuryand realize there were visionary Masonic leaderswho understood the need to change.

What exactly is that revolutionary vision for theScottish Rite?

Individually, we must care about each other,and collectively, we must meet the fraternal needsof our members.

Will you be remembered as one of thosevisionaries of the 21st century?

OVER THE PAST 50 YEARS OR SO, POPULARtelevision programs and movies frequently poke fun atMasonic groups by featuring characters that belong tomade-up fraternities with goofy names and even funnier hatsand costumes. Think of Mr. Cunningham, the “GrandPoobah” of his Leopard Lodge on Happy Days; FredFlintstone and Barney Rubble who were members of the“Royal Order of the Water Buffaloes” on The Flintstonescartoon, and “Raccoon”member Ralph Kramden on TheHoneymooners. Members and non-members alike haveoften perceived Masonic costume as weird, funny oroutlandish.And, indeed, Masonic regalia can have an element ofwackiness. An 1890s photograph of a Royal Archdegree team from Kansas shows a rather weird andwild mix of costumes. But, we may think the samething about the clothing we see in historic prints,paintings and photographs from the 1700s and

1800s. Even people of the era reacted to what they perceivedas the extremes of fashion by publishing cartoons and satires.Then, as now, fashion itself was as wacky, if not more so, thanthe regalia worn by Masonic groups.However, when we start to look more closely, comparing

Masonic costumes and photographs with clothing and imagesfrom the same time periods, we can see that regaliamanufacturers often took their cues from fashion houses.A new exhibition at the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum

and Library in Lexington, MA, “Inspired by Fashion:American Masonic Regalia” (opening in June), aims to tracethe fashionable inspiration behind traditional Masoniccostumes and regalia. Using garments and images from themuseum’s collection, the exhibition explores four differentmuses for Masonic garments – contemporary fashion, themilitary, Orientalism, and theater – to show the connectionsbetween everyday style and Masonic fashion over thecenturies.Masonic costume draws from a vast number of styles and

sources, often mixing them together to create somethingdifferent – and bizarre.While the rituals performed by thegroup usually set the theme for the costumes worn, the rituals

themselves were inspired by a long list of places,things and events. A partial list of influencesmight include places such as France, ancientGreece and Rome, Egypt, India, Persia andScandinavia; forms of dress such as 1700sfashions, military uniforms, medieval dress,college regalia and millinery, as well as Gothicarchitecture; the Bible, Druids, and historicalpageantry.

When it was organized in the early 1700s,Freemasonry offered a way for upper-class

men to meet together, socialize and share views.Over the centuries, American Freemasonry hascontinually adapted its aims and activities toreflect the interests of its members. During themid- and late-1700s, the fraternity experienced atremendous upsurge in popularity, in part becauseits values echoed those of supporters of Americanindependence. Mid-1700s fashion trends for menmirrored this cultural interest in equality andfound men wearing relatively simple andunornamented clothing, whether merchant orartisan. The clothing worn in the lodge followedthe principles of equality and Brotherhood thatguided all Masonic lessons. Yet, Freemasons stillwished to set themselves apart by what they woreand the materials used. Their regaliademonstrated a familiarity with genteel style andresonated with its gentleman founders. Forexample, Masonic aprons were made from soft,supple lambskin, rather than the durable cowhideof most workmen’s aprons.Early Masons are exemplified by theappearance of Mr. J. Hull, who sat for a portrait,with his wife, around 1815. He wears thetraditional Masonic costume – apron and sash –which would have been quickly understood byalmost all who saw this image.There are also a number of print sources toillustrate Masonic costume of the early and

mid-1700s, as the fraternity gained popularity.One of the best known is an engraving byWilliam Hogarth titled Night. One of fourengravings in Hogarth’s satirical series, The FourTimes of the Day, shows an alley scene outside theRummer & Grapes Tavern in London, which wasthe meeting place for one of the city’s lodges.Two Masons are depicted. One wears an apron,collar and square jewel (emblem of the Master’soffice). The man assisting him carries a sword,probably signifying his role as the lodge Tyler.This print shows how Masonic regalia wasworn over one’s street clothes, while alsosuggesting how these basic elements fit withcontemporary dress. They do not look out ofplace, yet are noticeable.The Masonic apron comes from the traditionalgarb of working stonemasons who woreprotective aprons. In the 1700s, Masonic apronsretained their animalistic shape, but over time,

they became more geometric, eventuallybecoming smaller and rounder or square.Sashes were worn by the Master of the lodge,

as well as by officers of the state’s Grand Lodge.Like aprons, which were often seen inworkplaces, ribbon sashes were also a commonaccessory in non-Masonic life – in this case,upper-class men wore them as part of formaldress. Men also wore baldrics to carry theirswords and these baldrics show similarities toMasonic sashes. A print of Revolutionary WarMajor General Benjamin Lincoln shows himwearing a sash with his sword over his vest andmilitary coat. This image resonates with some ofthe early portraits of Freemasons.

By the late 1800s, menswear had becomeextremely standardized, offering little room

for individuality. Men, regardless of profession orlocation, became somewhat indistinguishablefrom each other, as illustrated in fashion platesfrom the time. Following this trend, large regaliahouses offered mechanically-manufacturedaprons, sashes and uniforms. Materials, colors andstyles were similar throughout the country. But,even as regalia became more standardized, it stilloffered men a way to dress expressively,particularly during degree rituals and publicprocessions.While the exhibition focuses on male dress,

since Freemasonry is a fraternity for men, there isa section that explores the inspiration for Orderof the Eastern Star regalia. Like MasonicBrothers, the members of Eastern Star chapterswear three types of regalia depending on whetherthey are serving as officers, performing a ritual orattending an installation. Officers aredistinguished at meetings with sashes, jewels andbadges. Participants wear special costumes forinitiation rituals, and the installation of chapterofficers and other special events call for whitegowns, like the ones in a 1930s photo of thepresiding officers of one of Georgia’s DistrictGrand Courts. The installation gowns draw oncontemporary styles, as well as classical robes andwedding dresses.The Civil War profoundly affected all aspects

of American culture and society, includingfashion. As thousands of men turned out inuniform, military style was in vogue from the1860s through the end of the century. Masonic

regalia – and even women’s fashions – followedthe trend, incorporating elements of militaryuniforms including epaulettes, piped seams andtailored silhouettes.After the war, many Freemasons joined the

Knights Templar. The group’s explosion inmembership following the Civil War is notcoincidental. There were no more local militiaunits which had provided an outlet for malesociability. Joining a fraternity, particularly onewith a militaristic uniform and activities, filledthe void for many men.The group also offeredthe promise of order during a chaotic time. Forthose men who didn’t serve (or couldn’t serve) inthe military, the Knights Templar offered thechance to wear a uniform and have a military-likeexperience. Other Masonic groups also formed“military” sections and adopted regalia withmartial styling. The regalia built on acontemporary fashion that was widely understoodin American society.

Historic photographs, from the museum’scollection, such as the 1860s carte-de-visite

of Georgia’s Grand Commander George S.Anderson, show us what the Knights Templaruniform looked like – black chapeau-de-bras stylehat with plume, black or white velvet sash, largegauntlet-style gloves, sword and prominentmedals. Practicality drove the development of theKnights Templar uniform in the years followingthe Civil War.Regalia makerswere able to buyup surplus CivilWar uniformmaterials andadapt them forfraternal uniforms– this isparticularlyevident in theepaulettes andbraid trimmingseen in regaliacatalogs and onextant uniforms.The Ancient

founded in 1872 in NewYork city when William J.Florence and Walter M.Fleming organized MeccaTemple. As we’ve seenwith blue lodge regalia inthe 1700s and the KnightsTemplar uniform in the1860s, the Shrine costumewas strongly based oncontemporary fashions ofthe era of its founding –in this case, the vogue forMiddle Eastern costume.As more Americans

traveled to and read aboutthe Middle East after1865, Islamic-inspired

design and clothing became increasinglyfashionable. Even those who could not make thetrip could achieve the “feel” by wearing MiddleEastern-styled clothing or by joining the Shrine.Middle-Eastern culture, with its aura of pleasureand opulence, offered a respite for Americanswho were increasingly confronted by the changesthat industrialization and emerging capitalismbrought to their lives. Joining the Shrine gavemen a place to try out new roles, to fostersupportive friendships and to explore a newworld of fashion.

Elements of Shrine regalia include baggypants, bolero-style jackets and the fez. One

highlight of the exhibition is a brown velourbolero-style jacket with Shrine emblemsembroidered on the sleeves.While the colorfulShrine regalia seen today seems anachronistic atbest, it was adopted in the 1870s at a time when,Shrine member or not, a man might don asmoking jacket and fez to relax at home or tovisit a gentlemen’s lounge and “play Eastern.”Combining the interest in Middle Eastern

fashion with the vogue for military style, Shrineregalia took inspiration from the well-knownZouave uniforms, which were adopted by someUnion and Confederate units during the CivilWar. Marked by their couched braid decoration,jackets and trousers, these uniforms wereoriginally inspired by those worn by the FrenchForeign Legion during the Crimean War in themid-1850s.

While the Knights Templar are marked bymilitary style and the Shrine adopted exoticOrientalist costumes, the Scottish Rite is knownfor its theatrical degree rituals. After the CivilWar, the Scottish Rite began to rewrite theirearlier rituals, turning them into theatricalproductions with costumes, make-up and props.

The degrees often took place in specially-constructed spaces. This change may have

been partially inspired by the craze for historicalpageantry during the early 1900s. Towns acrossthe country put on elaborate plays about theirhistory. Like the Scottish Rite degrees, theseproductions offered a shared sense of values, builta collective story of the community and helpedcreate an identity for participants and audiencealike. Frank A. Stockwell, of the Valley of Buffalo,captured a backstage scene at one Scottish Ritedegree ceremony in his late 1930s painting,Degree Night at the Robing Room.Over the course of the fraternity’s existence,

Freemasons developed and retained their regaliato suit both the organization’s needs andprevailing fashion styles. For Freemasons, KnightsTemplar, Shriners and others, the traditionalcostumes are part of their identity, reflecting thevalues of the organization and helping tomaintain the group. In the 1700s and 1800s,employing contemporary fashion elements wasreassuring. Later, the reassurance evolved intotradition, adding meaning to membership andcommunicating that the wearer is part of asartorial brotherhood.Today, Masons still wear aprons and sashes in

their lodges. These items have become a type of“fossilized fashion.” Now, members think of thisregalia as traditional and often greet any changewith resistance. These garments help to identifymembers and to inspire pride amongst them.Masons continue to adapt contemporarygarments to fit the fraternity – even Hawaiianshirts and bathrobes.“Inspired by Fashion: American Masonic

Hitting One Out of the ParkBro. Carl Stotz and his Little League Brain Child

ON A BEAUTIFUL SUMMER EVENING LAST YEAR,the 64th Little LeagueWorld Series kicked offwith its sixth annual Grand Slam Paradethrough the streets of Williamsport, PA.

As predicted, spectators lined the parade route. Highschool and community bands, various marching units, amultitude of fire equipment, an array of floats, includingthose carrying the 16 playoff teams, participated.Dignitaries took part, including Andre Dawson, the recentNational Baseball Hall of Fame inductee, who was grandmarshal.With the help of the local PBS televisionaffiliate, the parade was broadcast by satellite so hometown fans could see their teams riding the floats. TheLittle League World Series puts this small friendly cityon the map for a week every year.The Freemasons in the area, decided to pay tribute to

their Brother and founder of Little League baseball, CarlE. Stotz (1910-92), and requested the city officials whoorganized the parade to give them a spot in it. As itturned out, the entire third division of the 20-division,three-hour parade was comprised entirely of Masonicbodies. Blue lodges, the Scottish Rite Valley ofWilliamsport, Royal Arch Chapter, Council, KnightsTemplar, Tall Cedars, Shrine, and Grotto, all had floats ormarching units. Grand Master Thomas K. Sturgeon ofPennsylvania and Grand Officers of York Rite bodies werein the parade.At the opening of the Little League World Series

playoffs, top political and government figures have thrownout the first pitches, including, in 2001, President GeorgeW. Bush, the first sitting president to do so. During theweek of the series, small commercial and private jets canbe seen flying into the Williamsport Regional Airport asboth American and foreign dignitaries arrive to supporttheir respective teams. The Good Year blimp flies over thearea and the playing fields during the games at Howard J.Lamade Stadium, which officials claim can nowaccommodate about 40,000 spectators.If Bro. Carl were living today, in all likelihood, he would

be uncomfortable with suchflourishes of magnificence,high society, andcommercialism that havebecome by-products of hisbrain child. By all accountsof those who were close tohim, Carl Edwin Stotz was ahumble and highly principled man, whose primaryconcerns were such things as teaching the boys goodsportsmanship, helping them build character, keepingthem off the streets with a worthwhile endeavor, as well ascreating a version of baseball suitable and fair for youngboys.

Another quality that Carl Stotz demonstrated verywell to all he worked with while formulating and

promoting Little League was good moral leadership; notjust to the young players, but to the volunteers, theparents, and all those who showed interest as he traveledextensively to establish Little League throughout thecountry. Pulitzer Prize winning author Garry Wills choseStotz as the model leader in the field of sports for hisbook, Certain Trumpets: The Nature of Leadership. In it heillustrates personages from various areas of endeavor asexamples of great leadership, including two Americanpresidents and two Biblical figures. As Wills points out inhis book, “No other sports program in America hasaffected citizens’ lives at so many levels as Little Leaguebaseball.”Bro. Stotz’s love of baseball goes back to his childhood.

His father, a baseball enthusiast, had a modest job inWilliamsport with the Pennsylvania Railroad, but wasable to get free passes to big cities such as New York andWashington, and, so, would occasionally plan to attend agame.When word about one of these excursions gotaround to the sons of other railroad employees, Mr. Stotzwould end up chaperoning the group of boys. They wouldsee such greats as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Ty Cobb

play. Carl’s memories of these trips would ofteninspire him to say later in life that “Little Leaguemakes dads of fathers.”Carl and his wife, Grayce, had two daughters,

but no sons. He would, however, play catch withhis sister’s young sons, Major and Jimmy, andwatch them play make-believe big league ballwith somewhat cumbersome standard sizedgloves and bats. One summer day in 1938, Majorthrew a pitch over Jimmy’s reach. Concernedabout the ball heading for the next doorneighbor’s lawn, Carl quickly ran to head it off,but tripped over a clump of trimmed lilac stems.One of the stubs ripped through his sock andscraped his ankle.

Carl sat down to nurse the not-so-seriouswound as Major and Jimmy ran to check on

him.Then, a mere moment later, as if in a kind ofvision, the concept of Little League baseball wasborn. He turned to his nephews and asked, “Howwould you like to play on a regular team, withuniforms and a new ball for every game and batsyou can really swing?”The boys’ faces lit up with interest at that

question, but responded with some questions oftheir own: “Uncle Tuck,” as they called him, “whowill we play?” Do you think people will come towatch us?” “Do you think a band will ever come?”Carl was not sure about any bands, but gave themassurance of teams to play and an audience, ifonly of parents and neighbors.Within a few days, Carl assigned Major and

Jimmy the job of recruiting their friends to form

a team. He would pick the boys up, squeeze all ofthem in his 1934 Plymouth two-door sedan, andtake them to training sessions in a section of apark where the grass was worn. During thesesessions, he would experiment with distancesbetween bases which he made out of foldednewspapers.

The Little League field Bro. Stotz ultimatelysettled on was about two-thirds the size of a

major league field. The bases were spaced 60 feetapart, and the pitching distance to home platewas set at 38 feet. Innings were reduced fromnine to six. These and other rules were modifiedfrom those of the major leagues for the safety ofthe boys as well as to adapt to their physicalabilities.Another task Stotz had to undertake was that

of finding team sponsors. It was one task thattested his perseverance and dedication to the hilt.He was turned down 56 times before acquiringhis first sponsor, Lycoming Dairy. As momentumwould have it, along with strengthened faith anda polished sales pitch, more sponsors jumped onthe bandwagon.Another matter that had to be addressed, of

course, was uniforms. As Stotz pointed out in thebook he coauthored with Ken Loss, A PromiseKept, it was a great thrill for a young boy to beissued his first Little League uniform. It was likebeing told, “You are a member of a team. You area baseball player. You are someone special.” Aswar was brewing in Europe in the late 1930’s andearly 40’s, the government was buying up uniformmaterial and sporting goods for military trainingcamps. Nevertheless, faithful Tuck managed tofind enough uniforms for all the teams.This was in addition to the time and effort

spent recruiting coaches, umpires, and volunteersto help lay out the field. For each of the firstthree seasons, in fact, a new field had to beprepared, as the old ones were either faulty insome way or claimed by other groups. Trees andbushes had to be cleared out. Parts of the fieldhad to be drained and filled in with the rightmixture of sand, and, bleachers had to be built.The Little League board of directors was

formed in 1940. At its first meeting, which wascomprised of the team managers and their wives,Carl was appointed commissioner and presidentof the league.

World War II put the damper on Little Leagueas many volunteers joined the armed forces. Afterthe war, however, Little League flourished.Veterans returning home volunteered their time.People from other neighborhoods and othercommunities inquired about forming their ownleagues. The new sport for young boys spreadthroughout Pennsylvania. Phenomenally, in sucha short time, Little League was receiving nationaland even international attention. The AssociatedPress took an interest in it through its localnewspaper affiliates.In the years after the war America celebrated

liberty, love of country, and family, as many werebeing reunited with the homecoming of veterans.It was also a time when Freemasonry enjoyed agreat influx of membership, especially with thisnew sense of freedom, patriotism, and optimism.Despite an extremely busy schedule, Carl Stotzwas one of the many who sensed the call tobecome a Mason. He petitioned John F. LaedleinLodge No. 707, in Williamsport in November1946. He was raised to the sublime degree of aMaster Mason on March 14, 1947. He became a32° Scottish Rite Mason in the Valley ofWilliamsport on May 2, 1947.

Since 1942, Little League had its own field inWilliamsport. In 1947, Stotz and the board of

directors decided to create a National LittleLeague tournament making it possible for all theleagues to take part in play-offs at the end of theseason. Needing a sponsor to pay travelingexpenses for teams playing in the nationaltournament, Carl went to New York City andvigorously negotiated with the U. S. RubberCompany. Convincing them the requestedbacking was for the boys and not for him, theyagreed to take on the sponsorship. Agreementwas also made for U. S. Rubber to manufacturethe authorized shoes for Little League. In 1949,the board changed the tournament name to LittleLeague World Series.By 1952, Stotz became extremely busy, between

his job at Confair Bottling Co. and demands onhis time promoting Little League. Peter J.McGovern, an executive with U. S. Rubber, wasappointed full-time president of Little Leaguebaseball, although Carl kept his honorary titles asfounder and commissioner. Stotz then acceptedan offer by U. S. Rubber to promote Little

League throughout the country andquit his job with Confair Bottling.While Carl was on the road, McGovern made

commercialized endorsement contracts. Thenumber of players on each team was increased.Carl favored more players, but only by way ofcreating more teams since more on a team wouldtake away practice and playing time from some ofthe boys. The game also appeared to be becomingtoo competitive. He became resentful of thecommercialization of Little League and the factthat it was being run by big business rather thanby local volunteers.

By the mid-50s, Stotz started taking measuresto attempt to stop what he saw as the

exploitation of Little League and bring back thestandards and values on which he based all hisefforts in building it but that was to no avail. Heleft Little League baseball in bitterness.On June 4, 1992, at age

82, Carl Stotz was working with Ken Loss on thebook, A Promise Kept, when he passed away. Inthe final pages, Lossincluded reminiscences ofCarl demonstrating hisprevailing principles andvalues. He wrote of whenCarl was asked about KenHubbs’ successful majorleague career with theChicago Cubs, whichbegan only eight yearsafter playing on theCalifornia team that wasdefeated by New York forthe Little League WorldSeries title in 1954.Naturally, Carl wasdelighted, but emphasizedthat the real purpose ofLittle League was not toproduce future majorleaguers, but “to provideopportunity for fun, andhelp the boys developskills and character thatwould serve them well fora lifetime.”Another interesting

when Stotz asked legendary Cy Young to attendthe World Series that year, knowing it would bean inspiration for the boys. The other LittleLeague officials tended to dismiss the idea, usingBro. Young’s advanced age as an excuse. Upon hisarrival, however, those same officials were thequickest to flock around the pitching great. Cypassed away the following year at age 87.

Further reminiscing about Carl, Loss goes onto write: “He believed that when properly

managed according to the program he and hisearly associates had developed, Little Leaguemade a significant contribution to society.Whenhe expressed such thoughts in later years, hisvoice would break and his eyes mist up. He feltdeeply the need for such positive influence in thelives of the nation’s youth.”When Carl was still Little League

commissioner in 1955, Ralph Edwards, host ofthe TV show, “This Is Your Life,” asked him toappear as a subject on the show. Carl was offered$1,000, and expenses for his family, close friendsand associates to go to New York would be paid.However, when Carl found out that a cigarettecompany was a main sponsor of the show, heturned down the offer, realizing a wrong messagewould be conveyed to the young ball players.One of Bro. Stotz’s fondest memories, as Ken

Loss relates, is one that cogently demonstratedgood sportsmanship and true character. In the1948 World Series, Joe Cardamone, the

12-year-old catcher on the losing team fromnearby Lock Haven, PA, stepped up twice duringthe game to shake the hand of the opponent inthe St. Petersburg, FL, team after hitting homeruns. This example of superb sportsmanship bythat young lad drew the admiration of the fans aswell as a special place in Carl Stotz’s heart.Carl and his family remained in Williamsport

the rest of his life. He served as a tax collectoruntil his death. The national headquarters andWorld Series site of Little League Baseball, Inc.was moved in 1959 to its present location inSouth Williamsport.In 1974, the original Little League field was

renamed Carl Stotz Field in honor if the founderof Little League Baseball.In a biography prepared for the Internet,

Elizabeth Wert pointed out that it takes adetermined and compassionate man like CarlStotz to be able to take a league with three teamsand 30 boys and build it into a sportsorganization that is now found in 63 countriesand on every continent, involving over 180,000teams with a million boys.At this year’s Little League World Series

The East-West Shrine Game

here are few activities as uniquelyAmerican as football. Based on televisionviewership, it is the preeminent professional

sport in the United States. The Super Bowl isperennially the biggest sporting event in our country.Despite being comprised entirely of males, footballhas the most participants among any high school orcollege sport.

For the vast majority of players, the college arenais where credibility is established before moving onto the professional game. Scouts attend games,watch film and pour over statistics to determinewhich few among the many might be good enoughfor the professional game.

The biggest stages are, of course, the bowl games.For decades, college fans have flocked to root fortheir alma maters in what have become the highestprofile events in the NCAA. Who among us hasn’t

heard of the glories sought on the fields of the RoseBowl or Orange Bowl? Nevertheless, there is oneall-star bowl game that is older than nearly all therest: The East-West Shrine Game®.

Established in 1925, the game is sponsored byShriners International. It is the longest runningall-star college football game in the United States,founded a mere 53 years after the formation of theShrine itself.

The game initially evolved from an annualbaseball game between the Shriners and the Elksthat had been played for years. All proceeds went toShriners Hospitals for Children®. Over the years,the idea of turning this game into a larger eventgrew until the Shrine decided to switch the game tofootball due to broader appeal. E. Jack Spauldinghad the original idea of changing the game into anall-star bowl game, and the legend was born.

For the better part of its history, the East-WestShrine Game was played in the San Francisco

Bay area. Kezar Stadium in San Francisco, StanfordStadium in Palo Alto and AT&T Park have allplayed host to this historic contest. In 1941, due tothe events at Pearl Harbor and security concerns, thegame was moved to New Orleans. The gamesshifted to the Alamodome in San Antonio in 2006,and Reliant Stadium in Houston from 2007-08.This was done in an effort to be closer to two of the22 Shriners Hospitals for Children®. Houston ishome to one hospital, while another is in Galveston.As scheduling became difficult, the East-WestShrine Game in 2009 moved to Robertson Stadiumat the University of Houston. In 2010, it moved intoits new home at the Florida Citrus Bowl inOrlando, FL.

Since the advent of television, post-season all-stargames have long suffered tenuous status. Scouts nolonger need to attend for recruiting purposes; thereare conflicting bowl games (such as the Senior Bowl)and players fear risking injury. There was, in fact, acomparable all-star bowl sponsored by the Shrine

from 1948-73 called the North-South Shrine Gamewhich was held in Miami, FL, until the executivecommittee of Shriners International discontinuedthe game due to attendance and television contractissues. Those who watched this year’s NFL playoffcoverage may have heard Terry Bradshaw discussinghis experiences playing in the North-South ShrineGame.

Those selected to play in the East-West Gameare the very best in the NCAA. Just some of the

most notable past participants include WalterPayton, Tom Brady, Brett Favre, John Elway,Shannon Sharpe, Eddie George and Mike Ditka.The list of players inducted

into its Hall of Fame includesLarry Csonka, Pat Tillman,Dick Butkus, KellenWinslow and formerPresident and Ill. Gerald R.Ford, 33°. It is the onlyall-star bowl game in theUnited States which alsoincludes players fromCanadian Colleges andUniversities.The teams are led by

former top NFL coaches.Just some of those who havecoached either of the twoteams in the past are DonShula, MartySchottenheimer, Dan Reeves,Dick Vermeil and WadePhillips.As part of their

participation in the game,players and coaches also visitShriners Hospitals forChildren® - Tampa, bringingjoy to those children andseeing first hand just what

playing in one game can do for others.The Pat Tillman Award is given each year to the

The Grand Commander’s office receives a lot ofmail . . . all kinds of mail, from what is now commonlyreferred to a “snail mail,” to email, text messages, tweets,SMS and other such forms of instant communication.Some of the most interesting is the snail mail. Youremember those days of yore, when someone wrote (nottyped) their words on a piece of paper, found an envelopewith a stamp, sealed it and dropped it in a post office box.Remember those big blue things on the street corner nextto the drugstore? Those are the ones.

Anyhow, a fair amount of hand-written, hand-addressed and hand-mailed letters still find their way tome nearly every day. Most often, they are written in ashaky cursive handwriting, indicative of someone forwhom the years have made their mark. Can I share aletter that I received in late January of this year? Itsmessage was memorable.

It is from a widow of a Brother recently deceased.She’s obviously in great pain now facing her days withouther life’s companion with her. She writes (***** aresubstituted for actual names):

Does it Happen Here?In a recent edition of The Scottish Rite Journal, Ill. Ronald A. Seale, 33°, Sovereign Grand Commander of theSouthern Jurisdiction, related the contents of a letter he received from the widow of a member. In it she takesstrong issue with the way her husband was treated – or more accurately, not treated – by his Brethren.Unfortunately the lack of fraternity shown to the man in his last days is not unique to the Southern Jurisdiction andcan happen here. As I have stated in past messages, we must care about each other, and we must meet the fraternalneeds of our members. Nothing else is so important. We need to live up to the tenets of our organization andstrive to make sure this scene is not repeated.

Seems as though this lady got the idea that we wereabout Brotherhood and that taking care of one anotherand fraternal concern and caring were tops on our agenda.I mean, that’s what we talk about in our degreeceremonies and obligations, isn’t it?

I wonder how she got that idea. Maybe it was the prideshe saw in her husband’s eyes on the night of his raisingas a Master Mason when he came home with a fresh,clean lambskin or white leather apron. Or the honor hefelt in wearing the square and compasses on his lapel orthe many meetings that he attended over the years.

Yet, when the years left him no longer able to attend,where were we? On one of the hardest days of her life,where were the Brethren? May God forbid that she got adues notice along with the funeral bills.

Other than offering our most profound apologies, thebest action we can take is to try to keep things like thisfrom happening again, both in our blue lodges and localScottish Rite Valleys. Let’s look out for one another andour families. Let’s be what we are called to be each andevery day: Brothers – true Brothers – who meet on thelevel, act by the plumb, and part upon the square.

As a Past Master of Harry S. Truman Lodge #649, inNaples, Italy – under the Grand Orient of Italy, and usingCalifornia ritual – I had occasion to attend local Italianlodges. They would open on the second degree withFellow Crafts in the chairs and then switch down to thefirst degree and the Entered Apprentices would replacethe Fellow Crafts in the chairs and conduct their business.This allowed the Master Masons to observe the FellowCrafts and Entered Apprentices at work in the lodge andpromote them usually after one year between degrees. Itseems like a good idea. The candidate has to work for thenext degree, not just show up 30 days later.

Visiting Israel in 2000 with my Brothers, Jerry Lankinand Eric Lankin, we went to lodge in Tiberias.I went down a flight of steps to a small lodge room.We

witnessed a third degree in Hebrew and figured out whatwas going on. The candidate was a Druse, the DDGMwas a Muslim, and Jewish and Christian Brothersattended.There were three holy books on the altar – a Koran, a

Jewish Bible and a Christian Bible. There was vodka, wineand beer at the repast which made us happy being from“dry” Pennsylvania, Masonically speaking.

Manila, Philippines

In 1996, carrying a letter of introduction from theGrand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of Vermont, Ivisited the Grand Lodge office of the Philippines inManila. I was in the country accompanying my wifewho was participating in a "Balikbayan" (or return visit)to the country on behalf of returning Peace Corpsvolunteers.I wanted to attend a Masonic meeting in Sorsogon in

northern Luzon where we were visiting. A telephonecall from the Assistant Grand Secretary paved the wayfor my admission. Through a Peace Corps contact, Imet the governor of the province who wished to attendthe meeting with me. In true Filipino fashion ofgenerous hospitality, he sent his car and driver to deliverme to the lodge.It was a country lodge meeting on a Saturday

morning. My experience was a great one, and I shallremember it well for the rest of my life. And, indeed,the governor, my Masonic Brother, attended with me.Other than regular business, I remember two special

things. First, in organizing the meeting, Brothersmarched in line before the Master to be invested withtheir collars.We don't see this in any other jurisdictionsI have attended. Secondly, after a vote for acceptance of

a local man for the degrees of Masonry, the Masterremarked, “he’s only a storekeeper, but we'll make him agood Mason.” Following the meeting, I was invited as aguest to attend a merienda which was held at the home ofa telephone company officer. A merienda is a traditionalfestive gathering for food in a festive atmosphere.I enclose a photo taken at the lodge. The two tall

members in the last row are the governor and me.

THE VALUES OF THE WORKON THE FUNCTION OF MASONIC RITUAL

“THE WORK IS WHAT MAKES USMASONS; we gotta learn the work.” an elderstatesman of the craft once told me, wearing50-year, Rainbow Girls and District Instructor’spins turned every which way on the lapel of hisfaded suit jacket. “But why?”He just shrugged,“The work is how we make Masons. That’s whata Masonic lodge does; it makes Masons. If wedon’t know the work, then we’re not a Masoniclodge.”His commitment was admirable and his

conviction was sincere. There was a sense that hemeant every word but, at the same time, was justtired of saying them. I had no doubt he knew hewas right. But his reasons – his answer to everyquestion – formed a tautology.Why do you needto know the work? Because you’re a Mason.What does it mean to be a Mason? To know thework. It was clear he had acquired something in alifetime of Freemasonry which had become toofundamental to his understanding of thefraternity to explain, or even realize, but Ithought that with enough questioning he couldfind his way to the essence of what he was tryingto say.But I was wrong. He could not find anything

else to say that would explain what that magicquality was that made the work so important. TheBritish social anthropologist Jack Goody oncecommented that ceremony “preserves the emptiedif not empty form, now shorn of meaning becausethat is [just] how things are done.”While thismay be true in some cases, I simply could notaccept that it was the case with Freemasonry.This is a voluntary enterprise, not someunavoidable tradition. Millions of rational menthroughout history have spent hours committingwhole books worth of words and movements tomemory. And every year thousands more havejoined them in that process of their own free will

and accord. Something, I thought, must bedrawing and keeping them there.But I was wrong again. Membership in North

American Masonic lodges has dropped over 66percent since 1959, the year of the fraternity’sall-time American high.I wondered if this didn’t have something to do

with that tautology about Masonic work. Could itbe that the Masonic cycle was broken; absence ofritual was creating an absence of Masons, or theother way around? I spoke to several Masons andasked them about their proficiency in the work.They all claimed to have varying degrees ofknowledge about the work, usually correlated totheir time in the fraternity. Those (we’ll callthem) estranged Masons I was able to get a holdof, on the other hand, claimed little or noknowledge of the work. More interestingly, Ibegan to realize that those Brothers who knewmore of the rituals were also better acquaintedwith their meanings as well.When asked, someoffered their personal interpretations while otherscited the official lectures in the esoteric work. Themore work a Brother knew, the more he had tosay about it. This, it seemed to me, had to meansomething.

Yet even those Brothers who had the most tosay about the work could rarely give me a

good reason for knowing it. Most just echoed,“The work is what makes us Masons. Masonshave to know the work.”Many of the estranged Masons would argue

that anthropologist, Goody, was right when itcomes to Freemasonry. They knew only a few oftheir new “Brothers” and their contact with themwas limited to a tedious catechism practice. It isno wonder they quickly decided that Masonryamounted to just a lot of memorization and badacting. This made me suspect that the cause of

Masonry’s failure to attract, or keep, newmembers with its former efficiency has to do withan understanding about Masonic ritual that atsome point began to be taken for granted.

Freemasonry is traditionally defined as “asystem of morality, veiled in allegory and

illustrated by symbols.” Initiates certainly have thesymbols and allegory laid on thick; walking outthe door after their first degree. Less often,however, do they get the Lodge System of MasonicEducation Booklet No. 1 or The Entered ApprenticeDegree booklet, which form an elementary primeron Freemasonry. Even less often do they getinvited to a special seat at dinner, with questionsabout their family and work life. If their diligence(and faith) one day get them raised, they can lookforward to a Red Book and Monitor containingmore ciphers and a few chunks of the lectures, aswell as new pressures to come to lodge practices.Those exceptional few that actually attend willget to spend two, three or four additional hoursmemorizing the ritual every other week. Andeven then, no one seems to know the workcorrectly.

Perhaps it is time for lodges to change theirapproach. If Freemasonry is “a system of morality,veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols,” itshould be no wonder that teaching the allegoryand symbols, but expecting the system of valuesto be revealed on its own, is not working. Beforeyou can find meaning in a story, you have torealize that it is allegorical, and before you canread a symbol, its meaning must be explained.That is why the work is called “esoteric,” from theGreek for “belonging to an inner circle.” NewMasons must be brought into the loop beforethey can be expected to understand.Masonic work encapsulates Masonic values and

it is these values that define Masonry and make aMason – not the work itself. The ritual is a vessel.To use a relevant metaphor: the tenets ofFreemasonry are the roof, arches and columns ofFreemasonry; the ritual, her ceiling, walls, andfaçade. It’s these tenets that give the fraternity

her strength, establishment, and security whilethe work provides corridors in which to travel,chambers in which to meet, and intimacy. As thefundamental supports of Freemasonry are allowedto fall into disrepair, like so many lodge rooms, itis no wonder that the fraternity is showing signsof collapse. Thus, it is the duty of all MasterMasons – especially those who have seen thefraternity in full force – to inspire, motivate, and,most of all, educate their Brothers, who don’tknow what they should, why they should know it,or what they’re missing out on. In this way,Masons may come to learn the value of workonce again, subdue their passions, and improvethemselves in Masonry.

Still, it should be kept strictly in mind that thelearning of Masonic values is not limited to

the ritual alone but occurs every momentBrethren dwell together in unity. On the fivepoints of fellowship, this is where charity, faith,reason, and brotherly love are learned and whereMasons are made. It is only when these values arelearned and cultivated that the empty glass ofwork can be filled and serve its ancient purpose.

When the tenets of Freemasonry are held up intheir rightful place and properly exercised, thework may naturally assume its proper place inMasonic life. Many veteran Masons may in factbe surprised at just how many of their Brothersseek out the work to capture and express the joysthat the tenets of Freemasonry, when properlyexercised, can provide. These two factors – thework and the tenets – must be kept in theirproper balance.The late anthropologist Monica Wilson wrote

that “rituals reveal values at their deepest level. . .men express in ritual what moves them most, andsince the form of expression is conventionalisedand obligatory, it is the values of the group thatare revealed.”This is how I have come tounderstand what was meant, but never said, by somany Brothers: Masons know the work becausethe work conveys the tenets, and the tenets arewhat make a Mason.

Bro. Richard Potter was the first professional American-

born magician and is also credited with being our first successful ven-triloquist. His fame was such that the town of Potter Place, New Hamp-shire, still carries his name. His tricks included dipping his hands into molten lead, crawling through solid logs, and causing men’s hats to speak.

In November 1811, he joined Af-rican Lodge No. 459 of Boston under the premier Grand Lodge of England (Moderns). Richard Potter is named in the June 18, 1827, “Declaration of

Independence” of African Lodge as one of three Royal Arch Masons to whom the three signing Past Mas-ters of the lodge delivered the “Grand Charter.” This is the document that created Prince Hall Masonry.

While he performed mostly in New England, Potter and his wife played most of the United States. In Mobile, Alabama, he was refused space at an inn because of his race, but despite his run in with prejudice during his stop, he made $4,800—about $55,500 to-day. Based on his profits, his visit must count as a financial success.

Bro. Richard Potter faced adver-sity throughout his life, but he ul-timately triumphed. He laid down his working tools on September 20, 1835, at age fifty-two. His wife Sal-ly died a year later at age forty-nine. They were buried in front of their house and his stone is inscribed, “In memory of Richard Potter, the Cel-ebrated Ventriloquist.” The Man-chester, NH, “Ring” of the Interna-tional Brotherhood of Magicians is named in his honor: Black Richard Ring No. 166.

Achievement Award for his 60 year career in which he appeared in over 200 films. Virginia Slims slogan, TV and theInternet have come a long way, baby.Thanks to high-speed broadband

service, advances in technology andthe development of online streamingservices, TV and the Net are here tostay.Many well-known streaming

services can bring both Hollywoodand television releases to your TV.With some devices, you also canbrowse the Web.You also may be familiar with the

eclectic Hulu, a website thatprovides streaming video of TVprograms, concerts and movies.If you haven’t already done so,

you may be ready to access theNet through your TV. The questionis, how will you do it? The answeris easy if you happen to be in themarket for a new TV, thenInternet-ready TV is the onlylogical choice.

Using Internet-ready TV really is as simple asconnecting your broadband Internet to the TV (by

cable or, in most cases, WiFi). Recently, I had theopportunity to preview Internet-ready TVs manufacturedby LG, Panasonic, Vizio and Sony. Each brand performedequally well. I would hasten to add that sets from othermakers are available.At this writing the number of Internet-ready TVs are

fairly limited, but the choice in offerings is quicklygrowing. Furthermore, Internet-ready sets are available inall sizes and price categories.Before you take the plunge, make certain the TV set

you are considering is compatible with the services youwant to access. Of course, you may not be in the marketfor a new TV. Not to worry, because other good optionsare available.Set-top boxes (also called streaming players) include

the well-known Apple TV, Roku, Logitech Revue, Sony,Seagate, D-Link Boxee Box and others. The devices arequite simple to install and operate.When considering a set-top box, compare the features

of each. For example, Apple TV and Roku do not have aWeb browsing capability. Netflix is not available throughBoxee Box and Logitech Revue, though this likely willchange. Prices start at around $60 with most in the $100to $150 range.

If you are in the market for a DVD player, a Blu-rayplayer is your best choice. It appears that most Blu-rayplayers now can handle streaming services, but not allare compatible with every available service. You shouldbe able to purchase a good Blue-ray player that meetsyour needs for under $150.Game consoles, such as the Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360

and the Sony Playstation 3, are another though fairlypricey option. Unless you or membersof your family are gamers, you willwant to skip this option.Finally, the TiVo digital video

recorder (DVR) offers both Internetand program recording capability.While the service is excellent, thereare fees associated with TiVo use.Make certain you fully understand allfees and subscription terms beforeselecting this option. At this writing,TiVo reports its DVR receives Netflix,Amazon Video on Demand, YouTubeand other streaming services.Regardless of the option you

choose, you may discover that theconvenience of streaming video isoffset somewhat by lower picturequality.In my preview sessions, I found

that picture quality degradationranged from noticeable to veryannoying. However, I must stressthat any assessment of picturequality – just like audio quality –

tends to be very personal. In other words, what I mayconsider to be less than satisfactory, you may find to bequite acceptable.The picture quality issue is not the fault of the TV sets,

but usually lies with the quality of the broadband service.Keep in mind that broadband speed typically variesthroughout the day as online traffic ebbs and flows.Picture quality also may vary from one streaming serviceto another though I have not yet found that to be thecase.

The bottom line: if you want the convenience of instantaccess to movies, television programming and

videos, streaming Internet TV is an ideal choice. You willneed true high-speed broadband service, not satelliteInternet or DSL. Streaming content is significant andexpanding. Most users likely will find that picture qualityis satisfactory though not outstanding. The cost ofstreaming services is reasonable and, in some cases,free.

It’s March in Florida and Illustrious BrotherJoe Fennick is a ball of energy. In one

moment he talks about his daily run on JensonBeach – part of his training. In an instant theconversation turnstoward his latest workto help the New CastleChildren’s DyslexiaCenter. Each storyportrays Joe’sexcitement and senseof enthusiasm which heinfuses into all theactivities he undertakes.

It is inspiring to hear ofFennick’s adventuresand accomplishments –like running. Marian,Joe’s wife, tells thestory as she does all theothers, with a sense ofpride and good-naturedexasperation moreexpected when speakingof the exploits of ayoung scamp than an octogenarian.

“When he retired, he needed an outlet for hisenergy, so I suggested he start walking withme,” Marian relates. It wasn’t long, however,before Joe needed to pick up the pace. Hestarted to jog, and then run. Before long hewas competing in local road races. From therehe began competing in the national seniorOlympics. “Obviously, I lost my walkingpartner,” Marion laments, with a wry smile.

It was Fennick’s experience with running eventsthat got him involved with the Children’sDyslexia Center program. “I wasn’t a boardmember of the center then,” says Joe. “But theguys who were trying to start one in NewCastle were putting on a walk event and Iagreed to help.” Supported by Fennick’sleadership and persistence, that event hasgrown substantially, raising well over $10,000annually.

During these years, Fennick became involvedwith the Children’s Dyslexia Center and

ultimately joined its board of directors. “Whatwe do for boys and girls is just wonderful,” hesays. “The center in New Castle is so important.If we weren’t helping these kids with dyslexia,no one would.”

Fennick has become apassionate advocate ofthe program since then.A member of theBuilders Council, whichrequires a gift or pledgeof $10,000 or more, Joehas staunchly recruitedseveral others tosignificantly support theNew Castle Children’sDyslexia Center. But hisgreatest achievement forthe center involves quilts.

“Joe used to have a sidebusiness finding andselling antique Amishquilts,“ said his wife,Marian. “He had onethat had been around

the house for about eight years, and it gavehim the idea for the raffle.”

Fennick was inspired to raffle a special blackand gold quilt which he had customized to

honor the region’s NFL team, the PittsburghSteelers. He added to its value by gettingseveral Steelers, active and retired, to sign it.

The very first year the raffle entirely sold itsquota of 1,000 tickets. In each succeeding year,the raffles of similar quilts, the product of sixAmish families who contribute their work andsigned by more and more Steelers, have alsosold out. Fennick remains among the event’smost vigorous ticket sellers. “I imagine we’veraised more than $30,000 for our Children’sDyslexia Center through the quilts alone,” hesays proudly.

As for the future, Fennick is looking forward tohis next national Senior Olympics in Clevelandin 2013. In the meantime, Joe keeps runningand works to keep the New Castle Children’sDyslexia Center running as well.

The Hooked X: Key to theSecret History of North America

by Scott F. Wolter. Published in 2009 by North Star Pressof St. Cloud, Inc., P.O. Box 451, St. Cloud, MN 56302.

It would have been helpful prior to readingthis book to have read Wolter’s first book,The Kensington Rune Stone: Compelling NewEvidence or at least have read information onthe subject. I cannot be the only prospectivereader unfamiliar with this subject.The author is a geologist and has served aspresident of the American Petrographic servicessince 1990. He has been the principalpetographer in over 5,000 investigationsthroughout the world so he carries an aura of credibilityon the subject of this book. He is going to need itbecause his writing will undoubtedly garner more thanits share of critics.Although it was a new subject to me, I found the bookto be fascinating reading. The author’s intent is toreinforce with conclusive evidence the concept of,pre-Columbian exploration of North America. TheHooked X is a symbol that was first discovered on theKensington Rune Stone, inscribed with the date 1362and found in Minnesota in 1898. In the year 2000Wolter was asked to do a forensic study on the stone, andit was to lead him to undertake a nine-year ongoingcommitment of his life to support the theory ofpre-Columbian exploration.The result of his study convinced him that theKensington Rune Stone was a genuine pre-Columbian

artifact but his conclusion was met with great resistancefrom those who rule out any possibility ofpre-Columbian exploration as well as others who wereconvinced that the Rune Stone was a hoax.This commitment leads him to tie together various“pre-Columbian” sites and artifacts in North Americaincluding other Rune stones and the Newport Tower. Healso concludes the presence of both Cistercian’s andKnight Templar’s involvement in this exploration and inthe creation of the Rune stones. It was his conclusionthat the author of the Kensington Rune Stone was aCistercian monk.There is a considerable amount of research involved inmerging not only different pre-Columbian sites in NorthAmerica but also sites found in Europe along withRosslyn Chapel. Organizations such as the Templars, theCistercians and the Freemasons along with notedindividuals such as Christopher Columbus also becomepart of this complex web.It was his involvement with the Freemasons thatcaused me to read the book and write this review. I feelthat speculation increased when involving theFreemasons. He makes observations relative toFreemasonry that were totally foreign to me, but then

this may simply be the result of my ignoranceof the subject. For example, the last paragraphof the book states, “While it would seem thatmany ancient cultures and many Freemasonsbelieve that God is a female deity, it doesn’tmean that it is true.”The rehashing of Freemasonry’s

“intrinsic” connection to the KnightsTemplars, their assistance provided toRobert the Bruce at the BattleBannockburn and to Masonic significance

of Rosslyn Chapel will certainly stir up those opposed tothese theories. The author will face further controversyby integrating the secret bloodline of Jesus Christ intothe text.This was not an easy book on which to write a reviewdue to the complexity of the multiple trails the authorundertook along with the conjecture of some of hisconclusions. Although his scientific backgroundcontributes favorably to the research that he hasconducted and some of the conclusions he has reached,there was much speculation that I assume was necessaryin order to continue the trail.I cannot but reflect back on one sentence the authorwrote. “When an argument is built upon a shakyfoundation, the subsequent argument is vulnerable tocollapse.” Some of the suppositions made to follow thetrails might contribute to a shaky foundation. I alsoquestion some of the information that he has received.

For example he quotes Niven Sinclair as telling him thatwhite and red oaks were not indigenous to NorthAmerica but were planted by the early Templars. Both ofthese species of oak are native to North America and insome areas form a climax forest.

Since it is not my responsibility to judge the accuracyof Wolter’s conclusions, I recommend the book. It isinteresting reading and certainly stimulates one to think,and it might, indeed, someday contribute to are-examination of the history of America.

The Invisible Collegeby Robert Lomas. Published in 2002, 2009 by TransworldPublishers, 61-63 Uxbridge Rd., London WS 5SA, England

When I first discovered this book in the GrandLodge library, I thought it was new writing by

Lomas as a follow-up book to support Freemasonry andthe Birth of Modern Science that he had authored.However, Freemasonry and the Birth of Modern Science waspublished in 2003 and The Invisible College was firstpublished in 2002. Nonetheless, either book could beused in support of the other.

Lomas has become a prolific writer, and I have writtenreviews of his books beginning with the Hiram Key thathe co-authored with Christopher Knight in 1996. I mustadmit that I have begrudgingly become a fan of his overthe years in spite of serious issues with his first books.This does not mean that I have changed my mindconcerning his initial writings; it simply means thatconclusions he reached in his later writings are far moreplausible and far less speculative.

The Invisible College contains almost 500 pagesincluding the end notes, bibliography, timeline and indexand, like Freemasonry and the Birth of Modern Science, isdedicated to proving the supposition that the RoyalSociety was created through the efforts of Freemasonsand principally those of Robert Moray. It delves muchmore deeply into specifics leading up to the creation ofthe Royal Society and those that sustained it to thepresent time than does Freemasonry and the Birth ofModern Science.

He says of Moray, “He is responsible for theremarkable development of scientific innovation that hastaken place over the last 400 years” and of The InvisibleCollege, “This book is the story of my quest tounderstand what he did and why he did it and todiscover the political, economic and religious backgroundto the formation of the Royal Society . . . .”

The Royal Society is the oldest, and to this day, themost prestigious scientific society in the world. It stands

alone as the most influential organization thatcontributed to the dramatic change in public attitudesdominated by religious dogma and political suppression.It ushered in the age of reason and scientificexperimentation replacing superstition and mysticism.

Many writers have speculated over the years that itwas the Royal Society that gave birth to Freemasonry.Lomas has offered considerable evidence to support atheory that Freemasonry was responsible for the creationof the Royal Society. If this supposition is correct thenFreemasonry has played an even more vital role in theevolution of modern civilization than we have evendreamed.

According to Lomas, Gresham College was foundedon the educational principles of the Old and AncientCharges of Freemasonry, and Gresham College was thelocation of the creation of the Royal Society. He hasbeen able to provide supportive evidence that many ofthe original members were Freemasons, and most ofthem were influential in society if not in the scientificcommunity.

The author, once again,challenges the United GrandLodge’s position that speculativeFreemasonry’s origin was inEngland and not in Scotland. Hegoes into great detail in qualifyingthe political motivation that causedthis position to have been taken. It ishis contention that with theformation of the United GrandLodge of England, the Duke of

Sussex, as the Grand Master and also as the president ofthe Royal Society, undertook the suppression of anyevidence of Jacobite origins of both bodies along withdestroying two potentially embarrassing Histories ofFreemasonry – one written by Moray, the other by EliasAshmole.

Lomas has done a commendable job in providing theevidence to support his proposition of Masonic origins tothe Royal Society. The amount of research that has beenundertaken to write this book is considerable. Hisconclusions are quite convincing. It remains now forsomeone with the knowledge and expertise to dispute hisfindings if they so choose. There remains speculation buteven if the theory of the Masonic creation of the RoyalSociety proves to be incorrect, this book is worth readingalone for the study of history that it contains.

Due to the similarity of the two books, a morecomprehensive understanding might be obtained on thesubject by reading the books or by reading my review ofFreemasonry and the Birth of Modern Science published inthe November 2003 issue of The Northern Light.

Every once in a while a unique storyaccompanies such a ceremony. On Oct. 28,many members received pins for 50, 60, 65,and 70 years in the fraternity. Usually thoserecipients who cannot attend ask that theiraward be mailed.One member, who could not attend inperson, was Bro. George A. Levis. Heexplained that he was not able to drivebecause he was 100 years old, and he lived inBaltimore. The Commander-in-Chief, Ill. Gregory C.Wenrich, 33°, decided that his pin should behand-delivered, rather than mailed.He called Bro. George, who was now 101, and told himthat he would arrive “on Friday.” George Levisrespectfully declined, stating that “Fridays are notpossible. I go flying with friends on Fridays.” Instead,he told him that he would be in Williamsport inJanuary, so arrangements were made to make thepresentation at that time.

Flying, apparently, is George’s passion and has beensince he was a young boy in Ireland. One day in

1918, according to the Evening Echo, a County Corknewspaper in Ireland, he spotted a Curtis Seaplane overWhiddy Island, off the Bantry coast, and he washooked.In May 1926, at the age of 16, he made his way toAmerica to pursue his dreams. By 1928, just a year afterCharles Lindbergh’s solo flight over the Atlantic, Levislearned to fly. He’s kept his eye on the sky ever since.His career never strayed too far from the air. He beganwork on an aircraft assembly line and eventuallybecame a demonstrator pilot. As a sideline and hobby

he restored old planes. He also owned his own aircraftfor more than two decades.At the age of 91 he started a restoration of a PiperSuper Cruiser. Seven years later the plane was certifiedfor air worthiness.He has logged more than 4,000 hours in the air andwas given the “Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award”from the F.A.A.According to the Evening Echo, he says, “If you’re in theair, you’re in the third dimension.”

Levis, who took his Scottish Rite degrees in theValley of Williamsport on June 6, 1945, now has a

Facebook page dedicated to his life. Called “George A.Levis Appreciation Society, Born 1909,” a visitor canfind posts and photos of this remarkable man.When flying for so long – indeed, almost from thebeginning of aviation – there will be problems. Levishas had nine forced landings. He says, “When you’reyoung you don’t think about those things.”At 101 years young, Bro. George Levis still keeps hisdreams aloft.

We are informed early in our Masonic affiliation thatthere is no higher status in Masonry than that of

Master Mason, and we accept this as a fact. However, itmay be that a Brother does not seek higher status, but,instead, he may desire “still further light in Masonry.”Those who have such a desire should investigate thenumerically higher degrees of Scottish Rite.The Scottish Rite branch of Masonry clarifies and

beautifies the meanings of the three blue lodge degreesand it does so most dramatically. Every degree is sointerestingly presented that it holds the rapt attention ofthe large audiences until the final curtain falls. A veryhearty round of applause for the participants invariablyfollows a presentation, applause that is clearly anexpression of genuine pleasure in the work of theirBrethren.In Scottish Rite Masonry, you will meet a host of the

truly dedicated Masons who belong in any Scottish RiteValley. These men have spent many years in the service ofMasonic work and have done so for the satisfaction ofaiding in the spreading of Masonic light and MasonicBrotherhood. A few of these dedicated men have attainedthe designation of 33° Masons, but, by far, the greatestmajority are 32° Masons. Both 33° and 32° Masonsparticipate in the 29 degrees which are in the care ofScottish Rite. These degrees are beautifully portrayed.A very apt comparison of the work of the blue lodge

with that of Scottish Rite has been made by Bro. Irving E.Partridge Jr., 33°, Scottish Rite Deputy for Connecticut.Brother Partridge likened the work of the blue lodge tothat of the elementary, and of the junior high, and of thesenior high schools, and the work of Scottish Rite to thatof the colleges. I should like to add a postscript to thatcomparison by saying that attendance at a Scottish Ritedegree after attendance at a blue lodge degree is likeeating a delicious dessert after eating a fine, hearty meal.

Why Become a Memberof Scottish Rite?

One of the most sacred andimportant duties which devolve on

the members of the fraternity is tocarefully guard and preserve our order inits purity and vigor. To do this effectually,the door should be closed against everyapplicant who is not known to possessthe necessary qualifications. There is alukewarmness on this subject, in manyplaces, which results in injury to this

institution. Too thorough a search andscrutiny cannot be instituted respectingthe life and character of those who seekto receive the benefits of Masonry.This matter should not be put into

the hands of those whose time andattention are so much occupied with theirusual avocations, as to prevent a properinvestigation. Especially is it a duty,incumbent on every Mason, to exercise

highly imaginative stories about the origin of the craft; howwe were established by King Solomon with the help of hisroyal partner, Hiram, King of Tyre.Other Masonic storytellers traced us back to Noah and his

disputed. That our present Masonic fraternity began withKing Solomon, or with anyone prior to the cathedral buildersof the medieval period, is pure tradition not capable of proof.But out of the old craft guilds, out of the loose confraternityof men who worked on the great churches and castles of theperiod between 1200 and 1500 A.D. came our speculativeMasonry, with organized lodges and ceremonies.

Food labels can aid infood buyingOnly 61 percent of shoppers check thelabels on food they buy. The AmericanDietetic Association says if buyers did,they would buy foods with less totalfat, fewer calories and less sugar.Only 51 percent of shoppers check

Education: Top factorin life successA recent USA Today Gallup poll showshow Americans feel about gettingahead in life: 36 percent say the mostimportant factor is a good education.Hard work was named most

important by almost as manyrespondents. It seems the two arealmost equally important. They say themore you know, the better off you willbe, but success in life also takes hardwork and dedication.Poll findings were the same,

regardless of age, race, gender orincome and education levels. Thefindings are also consistent withsurveys by the nonprofit PublicAgenda.Other factors named were: saving

The Van Gorden-Williams Library and Archives hasthe distinction of being the first Masonic library to

add its bibliographic records to the OCLC WorldCatdatabase.WorldCat is the world's most comprehensiveonline resource for finding items held in libraries, makingthose records available to researchers worldwide.WorldCat, accessible at worldcat.org, allows users tosimultaneously search the holdings of the 10,000+ librariesthat contribute to it. They will now find the holdings ofthe Van Gorden-Williams Library and Archives (morethan 18,000 items) among them.

The library and archives took this step forward one yearago, in an effort to increase visibility, promote itscollections, and help us better serve those interested in ourunique and important collections.

During the past year, we’ve seen the results of makinginformation about our collections more “findable” online.We’ve received both reference requests and interlibrary-loan requests which were the direct result of people findingour records in WorldCat. Requests came from libraries inOhio, Illinois,Washington, Oregon, Vermont, and even asfar away as The Netherlands. In all cases, the librariesoften began their request by noting that we were the onlylibrary in WorldCat that owned a particular book. Nearlyall of the requests were for books about Freemasonry andfraternalism.

The Van Gorden-Williams Library and ArchivesThe library is counted among the six largest Masonic

libraries in the United States. It also collects materialrelated to American history and other fraternal groups,thus broadly documenting American life as well asproviding greater context for the Masonic collection. Itscollections pre-date the founding of the Scottish RiteMasonic Museum and Library, with the Scottish RiteNorthern Masonic Jurisdiction’s Supreme Council librarycollection forming the nucleus of the newly formed librarywhen the museum opened in 1975.

For the many people who already know about us, thelibrary’s own online catalog is an invaluable tool thatallows researchers to search just the library and archivescollections and find records containing information specificto the library’s own copies (for example, books originallyowned by J.J.J. Gourgas, or other important previousowners of books in our collection). The catalog is availableat vgwcatalog.nationalheritagemuseum.org. Most of the

holdings of the library’s book collection are represented inthe catalog. In order to provide greater access to thearchival collections, we have begun adding collection-levelarchives records to the online catalog, records that includelinks to PDFs with search aids.

As a caretaker of my own “Demoulin Masonic Goat,” I waspleasantly surprised to receive the February issue of TheNorthern Light. My goat is slightly different in design and inneed of some restoration.

I was delighted to read Jeffrey Croteau’s “Prince Hall – Masonryand the Man” (TNL, Feb. 2011). As a younger member in mylodge, I am always trying to learn about our fraternity and itshistory.

While I knew of Prince Hall Masons, and have only met onein person, finding information about this branch of Freemasonryhas been elusive. Giving Prince Hall Masons this much-neededattention makes me proud of our fraternity and our noblepursuits. It also does much to address the question that I haveoften gotten since being raised: “Are Masons racist?”The littlehistory of Prince Hall that I knew, never fully answered that forme.

Explaining to my friends that black Masons would be fullywelcome in our lodge, but might seek out a Prince Hall lodgefirst, left me with a sense of failure in explaining why. KnowingPrince Hall’s rich and fascinating history will now allow me toaddress this difficult question in the future with confidence.

the top of Alaska at Point Barrow I met the man who sawWill Rogers and Wiley Post crash. He had been hunting, and

when he saw that he could do nothing for them,he ran back to his village for help.

In 1935, Wiley was on a mission for the president and askedWill Rogers to go with him in Wiley’s plane. They never

found the cause of the accident. Both were killed on impact.I wasn’t a Mason yet, but was so interested that I walked

the 15 roadless miles to the site where I found thismonument, erected at the crash site by the Oklahoma

Masons out on the tundra on the Artic Ocean Shore.

The Supreme Councilhas been informed that the programwon a prestigious CINE Golden EagleAward. It is considered by many to bethe top recognition for non-broadcastprogramming. The award came in the“Professional Non-TelecastNon-Fiction Division.”The CINE Golden Eagle Film and

Video Competitions are held twice ayear. Volunteer media and contentspecialists are asked to judge entriesin various genres. Hundreds of jurorsjudge nearly 1,000 entries in 32categories.Many prominent members of the

film and television industry havereceived the CINE Golden EagleAward including such notables as KenBurns, Steven Spielberg and RonHoward. Scores of distinguishedfilmmakers, producers and journalistshave won, dating from Mel Brooks in1963 to Martin Scorsese in 2006. J.R. Roach Joins StaffBro. Jerry (J.R.) Roach is the neweststaff member at Supreme Councilheadquarters. J.R. is an executiveassistant to the Sovereign GrandCommander and will also do somewriting for The Northern Light. Hismother lodge is Amicable Lodge inCambridge, MA, where he is PastMaster. He is also a member ofWinslow Lewis Lodge and is a Past

District Deputy Grand Master. J.R. isalso very active in the Valley ofBoston, as well as York Rite. He hashad a varied career to date. He is amusician who has performed at manylarge venues including crowds inexcess of 80,000 people. Mostrecently he was distribution managerfor a Boston weekly newspaper.His first weeks at headquarters

have been very productive. He hit theground running, contributing to thisissue with an article on the East-WestShrine Game. Additionally, he hasbeen interviewed by the BostonPhoenix and on that paper’s radiooutlet, WFNX. Both stories centeredon the resurgence at his lodge whichincludes several area musicians.Welcome, J.R.

Corporal Buckles DiesBro. Frank Woodruff Buckles, amember of the Scottish Rite’sSouthern Jurisdiction passed awayFeb. 27, at the age of 110. Buckles wasthe last surviving World War I U.S.veteran.In 2008, Bro. Buckles was elected

to receive the rank and decoration of“Knight Commander of the Court ofHonor.” According to Ill. S. BrentMorris, 33°, editor of the Scottish RiteJournal, the ceremony that took placewas “an extraordinary – perhapsunique – joint conferral, by theGrand Commanders of the SouthernJurisdiction and Northern MasonicJurisdiction.”Buckles “increased his age” in

order to enlist in the Army at age 16.He joined the ambulance corpsbecause he was told “that is thequickest way to get to France.”During the Sept. 24, 2008

ceremony Sovereign GrandCommander McNaughton presentedhim with a U.S. flag that had flownover the capitol that morning.

When Harry Met MelWhile doing a little spring cleaning atSupreme Council headquarters, AlexBird, director of shipping, cameacross an interesting memo from theWhite House. Dated April 14, 1948, itwas sent by President Harry Trumanto Sovereign Grand CommanderMelvin Maynard Johnson. Thecontent of the letter itself is rathermundane. The president thanks theGrand Commander for his copy ofthe 1947 Proceedings, sent to him asrecipient of the first Gourgas Medal.It gets more interesting as Trumansays to Johnson that he “enjoyed yourvisit the other day.” The best parts,however, are the informal salutationand signature. It starts, “Dear Mel”and ends, “Sincerely yours, Harry.”
