EFMD offers a range of development systems to aid business schools to improve their quality:
Through accreditation of whole schools (EQUIS) or
Through accreditation of individual programmes (EPAS) or
Through evaluation and guidance by mentoring (EDAF)
The three systems are linked in order to help schools move from one stage to another. The EPAS and EDAF systems include, if e ui ed, a gap a alysis to e a le s hools to assess hat
improvements are required to achieve the next stage of accreditation.

EQUIS Differentiating Factors (1)
Institutional Assessment
Whole School assessment: all programmes, research and other activities
Degree or non-degree programmes, including executive education
Linked to both academic and corporate needs
Involves both academic and corporate stakeholders at all levels
Balance between academic and professional skills
Emphasis on personal development

EQUIS Differentiating Factors (2)
Internationalisation as a key criterion
Of quality standards
Of reputation
Of the School culture
EQUIS managed by international team
Focus on diversity
Less normative in general but especially on
Curriculum structure and content
Faculty composition and deployment
Random audit vs. exhaustive audit
Consultants rather than auditors
Quality criteria in 10 areas

What is EPAS?
Launched in June 2005 to satisfy the demand for an international programme accreditation scheme
High quality degree programmes
Strong international perspective
Partially motivated by the implementation of the Bologna reforms in Europe
Institutions often need guidance in times of reform and turmoil
Markets need transparency to aid vertical student mobility
Contemplate diversity effectively while not compromising expected level of quality
To provide:
Rigorous, thorough and detailed assessment
International recognition and effectiveness

EPAS Target Market
EPAS Target Market:
Premium programmes with credible internationalisation, strong corporate links, convincing academic rigour and well-functioning quality assurance offered by
1. high-profile institutions with excellent flagship programmes
2. institutions on a credible path towards institutional
accreditation
3. institutions structurally not qualifying for EQUIS (eg faculty too
small)
4. non-Business Schools offering management-related
programmes (eg Schools of Public Management, Schools of
Law, Schools of Public Health)

EDAF: EFMD Deans Across Frontiers
Adding Value through Partnership
www.efmd.org
The Need for EDAF
All countries need effective management in their businesses, public
se to s a d NGO’s a d U i e sity le el i stitutio s a e ofte a ajo source of future managers through management development
programmes.
BUT many Business Schools (BS), especially in less developed countries,
have a shortage of expertise and resources, e.g. faculty, learning
environment, students unable to pay significant fees, etc.
ALSO many BS lack knowledge of international BS standards and may not
know how to improve their School. Also their Deans may have difficulty in
accessing international expertise.
HOWEVER EFMD has an enormously valuable network of excellent BS,
Deans and senior BS staff – many of them have shown an interest in
working across frontiers to help less privileged schools.
HENCE the idea of EDAF
www.efmd.org
Quality Improvement through Accreditation
There are about 13 000 BS in the world and this number is likely
to rise – but less than 10 % hold accreditation and receive
a quality improvement service.
Existing accreditation systems include, for example
EFMD: EQUIS, EPAS, CEL
AACSB
AMBA
But EFMD can contribute more widely to global welfare by
helping to improve Business Schools (wherever they be) and
hence society through EFMD Deans across Frontiers (EDAF).
www.efmd.org
Meeting the Need through EDAF
EDAF is a facilitating process to pass on the knowledge of
members of the EFMD network to other schools and to make
partnerships.
Evaluating the current state of the School against agreed
criteria, followed by advisory mentoring, is the core of the EDAF
process.
BUT EDAF is not itself an accreditation system, although it could
be used to prepare schools for an accreditation such as EQUIS
or EPAS by gap analysis.

EDAF Concept Model

BS components: Students- Programmes; Faculty -Intellectual Activity; Market Positioning-External links; Strategy-Resources -controllable variables

EFMD role in TNE-QA
• Provide expertise and resources for the
quality assurance system development
• Lead WP2 (QA standards and
procedures)
• Participate in the pilots
Thank you!
