Canary Wharf Supple-

(CWSS) aims to ad-
dress some of the ine-
qualities faced by the
many children in some
of our most deprived
boroughs. The school
is a grassroots organi-
sation, led entirely by
volunteers from all
ethnic and religious
backgrounds and
ranging from city pro-
fessionals to local
businessmen. It is
open to those of all
faiths and none and is
targeted at 11-16 year
olds. CWSS gives ad-
ditional support for
students in core sub-
jects of English, Maths
and Science. Although
the school does not
teach Islam as a sub-
ject, the school is
founded and operates
on traditional Islamic
principles of altruism,
goodwill and civic par-
ticipation. The model
for the school relies on
young professionals
from the local area
providing educational
support as well as act-
ing as role models and
mentors for young
students who are feel-
ing disaffected and
struggling with their
studies.

Education, Education,
Education was the
mantra of Mr Blair,
when he came into
power in 1997; educa-
tion would be the key
to closing the gap be-
tween the richest and
poorest in our society
and bringing about
levels of upward social
mobility. Arguably, we
have gone a long way
into achieving this,
alas, there is still a
long way to go, par-
ticularly for the aver-
age child living in a
less than average es-
tate in Tower Hamlets,
a borough where edu-
cational attainment is
low and income ine-
quality is vast. A strik-
ing and indeed unfor-
tunate fact is that
Tower Hamlets has the
highest rate of child
poverty in London. It
is the second most de-
prived borough in Lon-
don and is the third
most deprived bor-
ough nationally. And
79 percent of children
come from low income
families.

dren is the difference

World Habitat Day
2010
4th October 2010
On the UN World Habitat Day on 4 October 2010, Muslim Aid has urged govern-
ments to honour their collective commitment to provide their people adequate shelter as part of creating more equal and just societies. Muslim Aid also reiter-
ated its firm resolve to help communities that have lost their homes due to natu-ral and man-made disasters through its relief and development projects by pro-
viding temporary shelter, permanent housing and access to clean water. A Spokesperson for Muslim Aid said: “This task of providing shelter and housing
requires both national and international efforts and practical solutions, especially for people affected by crisis and natural disasters. On this day we remind the in-
ternational community that 640 million children in developing countries still live without adequate shelter and around 55 million people last year were affected by
extreme weather conditions across the world. Simple measures such as providing transitional shelter or good drainage systems can save peoples lives.”
Muslim Aid is currently implementing shelter and construction programmes in many countries across the world in order to make people‟s habitat safer and
comfortable. It has also completed flood mitigation projects in Indonesia to im-
prove protection against future flooding. These projects have allowed communi-ties to flourish and children to build a life filled with security and peace.

Cont. From Page 1 How Big is the Big Society?
Our honourable Prime Minister is proud to talk about his Big Society, where he claims that communities
should take over from the government to provide some of the services traditionally provided by the state.
The Guardian (22 June 2010) in „Interview with Mr Big Society‟ sets out the vision for the Big Society as
“One, building the capacity of citizens. Two, encouraging national collective activity. Three, a constant ne-
gotiation between the boundaries of civil society, citizen and government." All this sounds great and but
does the evidence really give me that warm fuzzy feeling? Unfortunately I‟m still waiting.
CWSS certainly has a great number of hugely talented volunteers, but we need space, books, materials
and other such things that help small charities like ours achieve their objectives. In the spirit of the Big
Society, we approached some of the Corporate giants in Canary Wharf but despite their remit to engage in
'corporate social responsibility', and our efforts in contacting them several times using different media
(letters, phone calls, face to face meetings, invitation to the CWSS launch party), disappointingly, not a
single penny has been donated. We are only looking for some support or a small contribution which they
could easily afford but don‟t feel inclined despite the Wharf being on the wealthiest financial hubs in the
world. Surely, this is not the Big Society that our dear Prime Minister is advocating.
Arifa , 16, a student of ICSS (the sister school of CWSS) recently received her GCSE results and com-
mented “I am very thankful to ICSS as it has provided me with the opportunity to receive additional sup-
port for my studies. I feel that my GCSE grades have been boosted by the tremendous level of support
and encouragement I received from the school and will be forever thankful to it. I am now ready to move
onto the next stage of my studies with the knowledge that I have some amazing networks behind me”.
Arifa‟s story is not a unique one for both CWSS and ICSS and you will find her words chime with many of
our current and former students. For the success to continue, we don‟t require much, but what we do re-
quire has the potential to change the lives and future of many of our city‟s children and sometimes the
most disaffected and disengaged youth.
Maybe one day, these children can also aspire to working in one of those tall glass buildings and reaching
out to the communities those less fortunate than themselves. Is the Big Society big enough to change the
story of some of the most under-achievement and social exclusion to one of a virtuous cycle of prosperity?
We‟ll leave this one to society to decide.
To learn more about ICSS or find out about how you can contribute, please contact: Sahera Abbasi on

Devastating floods in Pakistan have caused the displacement of at least 20
million people. They are stranded without food, water and little or no shelter. Efforts have to be stepped up to provide them with food and water and every
little bit helps. Sonia Klein, former Parliamentary candidate for Ilford North, in cooperation
with Pakistan International Airlines, last month organised for the East London community to contribute to flood relief in Pakistan. PIA has been running free
airlifts to deliver boxes of food, water and other basic necessities. Sonia heard of what PIA was trying to do, and organised several drop off centres all
over East London where people could bring boxes or bags of goods to be brought to Heathrow Airport and onto PIA‟s planes.
The response was overwhelming! Individuals, groups of neighbours, and charities started bringing hundreds of bags and boxes, some from as far away
as Cambridge. All of the donations were collected from the drop centres and brought to Sonia‟s home in Romford stacked to the ceiling, taped up, labelled,
and stuffed into vans. Within no time we were warning PIA of the impending
drop off of over two thousand kilos of goods. Anything that can be done to raise the profile of the disaster will only help to
bring more aid to the people affected by the flood. Thank you to everyone
who volunteered their time, energy and supplies to the relief efforts.

I'm gonna take my bicycle and ride out to
a field
and play under the sky with the mosqui-
toes and the birds.
We can play together, you can come with
me.
Have you ever had a picnic sitting high up
in a tree?
Every single blade of grass
And every day and month that pass
and every coloured leaf that decorates the
fall.
Every flake of snow is different,
every place you go is different,
everyone you know is different,
that's the beauty of it all.
There are a million picture puzzle pieces
in the passing clouds
we can contemplate and dream
upon the beauty of the signs.
I like to lay down with my head
upon the grass,
laughing with the moon and winking
back at stars that pass.
Every single star you see
and every rock within the sea
and every drop of rain that you've
Ever felt fall.
Every flake of snow is different,

Every print on every finger of each hu-
man on the earth is different
from each other finger print since the
start of time.

sound comes from her lips,
Abdullah doesn't use his eyes, reads

HMC was born essentially out of one concern and one concern only;
to be able to provide assurance that we are eating genuine Halal, not just “because it says Halal… it must be Halal!"
HMC is the product of a particular, prolonged situation – a situation of deceit
and treachery. Muslims are being betrayed by individuals & corporations whose only concern is making fast, easy money. Using 'blessed blades', pre
recorded Bismillah, captive bolts, electrified water and even pork proteins; the hard-earned Halal cash of many is being used to buy Haram. HMC has
therefore, shouldered the enormous responsibility of discharging an obliga-tory duty on behalf of you, the community at large. Help HMC to Help You!

With both teams having
previous encounters back in 2000 before APSA were promoted to
the Premier division, this was a much antici-
pated fixture.
APSA started the
stronger and early goals from Majid Hus-sain and Bilal Bapu set-
tled the side and gave Sabha alot to think
about.
They steadied them-
selves and pulled the defence together and started to make it diffi-
cult for APSA.
Sabha responded just before half time with a very nice goal from
Johal Khatkar. It was a wonder strike and
APSA had an immedi-ate answer for it with an equally great
strike from Akib Salim, who's vicious
shot gave the keeper APSA no chance. The 2nd half was all
APSA as they passed beautifully and cre-
ated chance after chance. Yasin Patel gave APSA a very
convincing 5-1 vic-tory.
Manager Zakir Hus-sain "We played very well today. Some-
times in local Derby's their tends to be alot
more bravdo and ego in play, but the boys were professional and
both teams wanted to play football.
We've had a really
good start and as
long as we can avoid
complacency I'm con-
fident we can do very
well in this league.
Our first team are
also doing splendidly
along with the youth
teams, it's a great
time for APSA and
everyone involved
Alhumdulillah".
APSA played Singh Sabha in an Epic Asian encounter in the
Essex business Houses League.
