INTRODUCTION OF THE KANJO-DAI-NI-GOSEN PROJECT

Kanjo-Dai-Ni-Gosen (Loop Road No.2) is an urban road project approx. 14 km long, which starts from

Ariake, Koto Ward, and then through Chuo and Minato Wards and ends at Kanda Sakuma Town,

Chiyoda Ward.

This road had been originally been planned for a length of approx. 9.2 km from Shinbashi to Kanda

Sakuma Town with a width of 100m in 1946, but subsequently the width was changed to 40m (the

same width as the current road) in 1950. In 1993, it was decided the road would be extended from

Shinbashi to Ariake to strengthen connectivity with the coastal area.

As for the road structure, it was decided in 1998 that the main route section from Shiodome to

Toranomon would be changed to underground tunnel. Similarly, for the section between Harumi to

Shiodome, bridge/elevation was adopted for the eastern side of the Sumida River in 2007.

Until today, a total of approx. 9km including the Sotobori Street section has been completed, as well

as the 1.4km section between Shinbashi and Toranomon. The section between Toyosu and Shinbashi

(approx. 3.4km) is currently under construction.

Listed below are the positive effects that are expected from constructing the loop road:

Strengthening the traffic/logistics network between the coastal area and the central part of

Tokyo.

Promoting smooth regional traffic flow by decreasing traffic congestion, particularly on

Harumi Street that runs parallel to the loop road.

Improving resilience to natural disasters by preparing multiple routes at the coastal area.

It is also considered as an important road that will connect the Olympic/Paralympic village in Harumi

to other Olympic/Paralympic venues during the Tokyo Olympic/Paralympics in 2020.
