Fractions
Fractions are written with one number (numerator) over the other number (denominator).
The numerator (top number) tells you how many parts out of the group we are talking about.
The denominator (bottom number) tells you how
many parts are in the whole group. 2 Two parts of a group of three.
3 There are three parts altogether.
2 3
e.g.: If Dan eats 6 out of 10 pieces of pie, it is written:
Fraction: 6 10

Adding & Subtracting Simple Fractions
1. If the denominators in both fractions are the same, write the fraction answer with the same denominator.
2. Add or subtract the numerators & write the new numerator in the answer.

Equivalent FractionsEquivalent fractions are two different fractions of a whole object with unlike denominators that represent the same portion of a whole object.
How can I use equivalent fractions? Suppose that your brother wants to eat ½ of a pizza and the pizza is cut into12 slices. You can figure out how many pieces to give him by computing thenumber of twelfths it will take to equal to ½ of the pizza.
Find the equivalent fraction:
Decide what number the denominator of one fraction was or to equal the other denominator.
Multiply or divide the numerator by the same number.

Multiples Information
• Common multiples are products (answers) thattwo or more numbers have in common.
3 9 x 3 x 1 9 (9 is a common multiple for 3 and 9) 9
Both numbers have 9 as a product (answer)
6 9 x 3 x 2 18 (18 is a common multiple for 6 and 9) 18
Both numbers have 18 as a product (answer)
• Multiples of a number are the products (answers) whenthat number and another number are multiplied.
2 x 3 = 6 2 x 4 = 8 2 x 5 = 10
• (6, 8, and 10 are multiples of 2.)
• The Least Common Multiples (LCM) for a number is thelowest multiple (answer) that the numbers have in common.
