by Dick Bare Hi Everyone! Isn’t this fall weather fantastic? I think it’s the best season of the year – you have fall fairs and festivals: the Yellow Daisy Festival, Oktoberfest, the Ohio State Fair, the Canfield Fair. There’s Labor Day, back-to-school, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. There’s burning leaves, fire in the fireplace, hot apple cider, hay rides, and spectacular fall colors worth a trip to the Northeast: Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Upstate New York. So that’s exactly what we plan to do. But first we went up to Canfield, Ohio. It’s a beautiful small town nestled in the Mahoning Valley, triangulated by Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Youngstown. It’s about an hour-and-a-half drive from Cleveland and Pittsburgh and twelve hours from my house, with a stop for lunch, etc. The Canfield Fair has run for 165 years, and I have missed few if any in my 63 years. One big attraction of the trip is Handel’s Ice Cream stores, where you can get Bill Cosby’s favorite ice cream; it was voted best in the world by National Geographic. They have the best butter pecan I have ever tasted, and the black raspberry in the fall is terrific. Just call or go online and they will Fed Ex it to you on dry ice: www. handelsicecream.com, 330-702-8270. My high school’s 45th class reunion happened on Saturday night. I wasn’t happy that it caused me to miss the tractor pull, but the reunion was great. About 100 people attended, and it was so interesting to talk to people I knew back then and see what they’ve been doing. One man was particularly interesting to talk to: Mitch Bellata. His dad, Pat, was one of my dad’s key employees. He was a master at hand pruning, landscaping, maintenance, etc. When Pat got done with your property, it was a masterpiece. Mitch was just a gangly kid when he worked with me at the nursery. He ended up marrying Nancy Bellotta and both went on to have terrific careers at AT&T. Mitch looked like Mark Twain, very distinguished and wise. We exchanged stories about the nursery and laughed and laughed. There was the time that Phil Christian and Pat were hauling a backhoe back to the nursery. After they got through Youngstown, they looked in the rearview mirror, and the tractor was gone. Scared to death, they circled back into town, and there it was, sitting in the square. Each one thought the other had tied it down. Anyway, back to the class reunion. Some of the kids really turned out great: PhDs, big businessmen, teachers who rose to the rank of principal, rocket scientists – you name it. • Watercoolseasongrassesuntilthenewseedisfirmlyestablished. This usually takes 4-5 mowings. One inch a week will do. Never let the seed dry out during the first two weeks, it will kill it. Rough up the bare spots (with a rake or a shovel) before seeding and then cover with fescue straw to help hold in water during hot dry days. If you use wheat straw, you will have wheat growing in the spring, so it’s better to use fescue straw.

Rescue Your Fescue, Bermuda and ZoysiaThere are several other things you can do to keep your lawn healthy during the fall and winter, no matter what kind of grass you have:

Leaves that cover your lawn, can not only damage it, they can render liquid treatments ineffective. We recommend you use a blower versus a rake to remove the leaves. This is probably the most important advice we can give you during the fall.

Thanksgiving Joke CornerEddie in Dallas calls his son in New York just before Thanksgiving and tells him, “I am sorry to tell you but your mother and I are going to be divorcing. I just cannot take any more of her moaning. We can’t stand the sight of each other

any more. I am telling you first, Eddie, because you are the eldest, please tell your sister.”

When Eddie calls his sister, Julie, she says: “No way are they getting divorced. I will go over and see them for Thanksgiving.”

Julie phones here parents and tells them both, “You must NOT get divorced. Promise you won’t do anything until I get over there. I’m calling Eddie, and we’ll both be there with you tomorrow. Until then, don’t take any action, please listen to me”, and hangs up.

The father puts down the phone and turns to his wife and says, “Good news. Eddie and Julie are coming for

Thanksgiving, and they are both paying their own way.”

What you need to do until our next visit1) Take advantage of any allowed watering times put forth by your county.

Optimally, during fall, all lawns should receive about 1” of water each week from rain or irrigation. Tree and shrubs should receive a thorough watering from rain or irrigation once each month so that the water is penetrating the roots, which means the ground should be wet 2”-3” down.

2) Please see page 2 for the appropriate mowing heights of warm season grasses. Fescue lawns should be mowed every 5-6 days. Do not remove more than 1/3 of the grass blades at each cutting for optimal appearance.

3) Routine trimming will help your shrubs grow better.

Thanksgiving Quotes George Carlin: We’re having something a little different this year for Thanksgiving. Instead of a turkey, we’re having a swan. You get more stuffing.

Erma Bombeck: No one diets on Thanksgiving. What we’re really talking about is a wonderful day set aside on the fourth Thursday of November when no one diets. I mean, why else would they call it Thanksgiving?

Johnny Carson: Thanksgiving is an emotional holiday. People travel thousands of miles to be with people they only see once a year. And then discover once a year is way too often.

Gerald Good: If you want to turn your life around, try thankfulness. It will change your life mightily.

Reba McEntire: To succeed in life, you need three things: a wishbone, a backbone and a funny bone.

have been a Rhodes Scholar if it weren’t for my grades.

There were others like me, not the sharpest knivesinthedrawer.TakeNancyMiner,forinstance. She got pregnant while in school, and I’ll never forget what she said to me one day when she thought her boyfriend was cheating on her: “In fact,” she whispered, “I’m not even sure the baby I’m carrying is his!” Figure that one out.

Then there was Bill Reilly. He was telling me how he and his wife raised their son in a fine Christian home, and now he was practicing Judo! “I wonder what caused him to turn against his religion?” he mused aloud. Apparently, Bill thought judo must be some denomination of Calisthenics or something.IcaughtupwithSueMueller.She’sbeen

married three times, and the last one only lasted three months. “Gosh,” I exclaimed, “how could a marriage only last three months?” She explained that she hadn’t realizedhedrankuntilhecamehomesober one time.

Some of the people had elderly parents living with them, which is stressful, but one woman really got me laughing. She said her mother was hell on wheels, “I think she is going through mental-pause.”

Football was really big at Chaney High School, and Jim Tressel and Ohio State were big on everyone’s mind. Not only are we in for five more years of the Great Recession, but OSU will probably be on probation that long too, and that adds up to a Depression. “It’s kind of hard to rally around a math class,” as Bear Bryant of Alabama says.

That reminds me of some great football quotes:

“I make my practices real hard because if a player is a quitter, I want him to quit in practice, not in a game.” – Bear Bryant, Alabama

“It isn’t necessary to see a good tackle. You can hear it.” – Knute Rockne, Notre Dame

The rest of that night and the rest of our trip in Canfield was great. It’s always nostalgic to go “home” and remember the great times you had growing up. But now it’s time to experience some fall in the northeast. It’ll be my first time (at this time of the year), so I’m sure I’ll have a lot to say in the next Buggette.

Bare in Mind…<<< continued from page 1

Trace Yost, one of our longest term employees got into a bad habit years ago. He started bringing creamers in from breakfast to one of our company cats, Bentley. Bentley was a stray kitten that one of our neighbors brought in years ago. He has a crook in his tail; hence the name “Bent”ley.

Bentley won’t stay indoors, whereas Daisy won’t go outdoors. She is an orange tabby cat, and because she doesn’t go outside, she is as big as the hood of a Buick! When they were both younger, I got sick of seeing Daisy laying around all day getting fat when she could be outside

catching mice and what not. So I placed her out the front door, and she protested

mightily. I ducked out the back and went on my merry little way across the street to my office. After finishing a few things there,

I took off to do my daily rounds of estimates and service calls.

About two hours later,

Doug called and

said all the women in the office were quitting. “What!” I exclaimed. “Are you kidding?”

“No,” he said, “they are really mad that you threw Daisy out.” So I called our office manager, Jessica, and apologized profusely. She told me Daisy was going around window to window and looking in all the girls’ offices with a terrified look in her eyes. (The windows at the Norcross branch go down to the ground.)

So peace was made, and Daisy triumphantly marched in the front door high-fiving everyone and acting arrogant. The next day when she saw me, she turned sideways and hurrumphed at me. Eventually we made up, and now she’s confident no one’s going to mess with her. Anyway, back to Bentley and Trace.

That cat is out at the crack of dawn every day now to meet Trace and then again toward the end of the day when Trace returns from the field. He not only gets creamers but cat food too—the good stuff that comes in a can. He couldn’t be healthier.

Trace wanted me to write this to assure all of you that our products are safe when used in a professional manner. Bentley is over six years old and wallows in all the pesticide dust every day and then licks himself clean. He’s our canary in the mine shaft—so far, so good. Daisy thinks he’s stupid.
