Five Auxiliary members have helped with the history book of Adqi.r County.

ARTHUR RAY WEED

Arthur Ray Weed was born at Irwin, Iowa, on November 15, 1877. During his early years he lived

/ !uscatine, Iowa; Taylor, Nebraska; Grand Junction, Colorado; then returned to Grand River Township. He attended school at the Proctor School north of Grand River Center and in his spare time herded cattle on the open range for a Mr. Heifner. About 1896 the family moved east of Orient. It was

1 at this time, Art, as he always asked to be called, I migrated east and found work as a section hand on I the railrood at Peru, Iowa.

On November 16, 1898, he was united in mar­riage with Flora Jane Little, a farm girl of rural Peru. After two years on the railroad, he hired out as a farm hand and continued at this work until November 1, 1918, whe11 he left the farm for full­time ministry. Between the years 1912 through 1917, he was issued each year, by the Methodist Church, a permit to preach. During these years he was a farm hand and did practice preaching without compensation at Elm Grove and Zion in Madison County.

In 1918 Rev. Weed was ordained at the Elm Grove Church north of Peru. His first charge was the Hebron Church in Adair County and Wesley Chapel and Webster Churches in Madison County, Other charges where he served included West Star and Worthmgton in Madison County, the Carl and lVIt. Etna Churches in Adams County, and Tingley, Wishard Chapel and Ellston in Ringgold County.

While at Tingley, in 1950, at age 72, retire­ment age by Methodist regulations, he was retired but continued to serve his churches as supply pas~ tor. Later he was sent to serve the Lamoni and Davis City Churches in Decatur County. In 1958 the Rev. and Mrs. Weed moved to Orient when he was assigned to Clara Chapel and Grove Center Churches northeast of Greenfield. In 1968 he re­tired because of health.

Rev. and Mrs. Weed had four children: Lon­nie of Orient; Lyle of Rochester, Minn.; Christina and Laura, both deceased. During his years of min­istry in Madison County, he was elected to two terms in the Iowa House of Representatives., 1933-1935 and two special sessions. After the passing of Mrs. Weed in 1969, he moved to the Fontanelle Good Samaritan Center where he helped with the morning devotions and other religious programs until the day of his death in January, 1975.

Mr. ,,.eed farmed in the Madison County area for a few years, but feel­ing he was called to the ministry, he began to study theology courses by cor­respondence. In 1918, at age forty-two, he received his license to preach in the active ministry of the Methodist Episcopal Church and since that time has served in that capacity serving The Iowa Methodist Conference in the following central and southern rural areas: Hebron, West Star, Worth­ington, Carl, Mount Etna, Tingley, Ellston, Wishard Chapel, Lamoni, Davis City, Clara Chapel, Grace Center.

A Republican, Mr. Weed served as State Representative from Madison County in the Forty-fifth, Forty-fifth Extra and Forty-sixth General Assem­blies.

He passed away January 9, 1975, at Good Samaritan Center retirement home, Fontanelle, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Flora, in 1969 and his daughters, Christina and Nancy. Surviving are his sons, Lon­nie L. of Orient, Iowa, and Lyle A., Rochester, Minnesota.

TherefM·e, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Snty. sixth General Assembly of Iowa: That in the passing of the Honorable Arthur Ray Weed, the state has lost an honored citizen and a faithful and useful public servant, and the House by this resolution would express its appreciation of his service, and tender its sympathy to the members of his family.

Be It Further Resolved: That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House, and that the. Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
