PrefaceTheTivoli/Plus for NetWorker User's Guide describes specific featuresand procedures for using the Tivoli/PlusTM for NetWorker module. This module was jointly developed by Tivoli Systems Inc. and LegatoSystems Inc. and provides an integration of the Legato NetWorkerbackup and recover software with the Tivoli ManagementEnvironmentTM (TME). Through this integration, the Tivoli/Plus forNetWorker module delivers the distributed system managementcapabilities of TME for specific use with NetWorker. UsingTivoli/Plus for NetWorker, the NetWorker application can be managedacross a multi-platform network that includes PCs and UNIX systems.

Tivoli/Plus provides different modules for integrating differentproduction control applications with the Tivoli ManagementEnvironment. Since all Tivoli/Plus modules have a common interface,a system administrator can implement the system managementcapabilities of the TME with various production control applicationswhile enjoying the simplicity of a common interface. The addition ofTivoli/CourierTM, Tivoli/SentryTM, and the Tivoli/EnterpriseConsoleTM provides additional management capabilities in the areas ofclient installation, resource monitoring, and event correlation.

Who Should Read This GuideThis guide is for system administrators who use the Tivoli/Plus forNetWorker module to manage the operation of the NetWorker backupand recover software. Tivoli/Plus IconsAlthough the Tivoli/Plus icons look like (traditional) TME icons, theirfunctionality has been altered slightly to provide a faster, moreintuitive approach to navigating and deploying the module’s features. In some cases, like a Tivoli/Courier file package profile, menu itemshave been removed from the icon’s pop-up menu to create a more“point and click” environment.

The Tivoli/Plus icons can be activated in either of two ways:

■ Opening or executing the icon by double-clicking on it with theleft mouse button. In many cases, double-clicking executes anactivity (such as a task) without opening another dialog layer.

■ Displaying the icon’s pull-down menu by pressing and holdingthe right mouse button

Tivoli/Plus Unique Features

1–12 Version 1.0

Generally, either method may be used to access a particular function. There are cases, however, where a particular function can only beaccessed by one of these methods.

The following icon represents the Tivoli/Plus for NetWorker resources:

To prevent confusion between traditional TME and Tivoli/Plus forNetWorker functionality, each Tivoli/Plus icon has been overlaid withthe Tivoli/Plus symbol to highlight its special functionality.

Tivoli/Plus Unique FeaturesTivoli/Plus modules use the termprofile manager in a somewhatdifferent way than do the other Tivoli products. In a Tivoli/Plusmodule, a profile manager's primary function is as asubscription list.A subscription list identifies the machines that tasks and jobs run onwhen executed. Subscription lists can contain machine names or otherprofile managers. Adding a profile manager to a subscription list issimply a way of subscribing several machines at a time rather thanadding each one individually.

TheTivoli/Plus User's Guide describes the function of profilemanagers in the Tivoli/Plus modules in more detail. For moreinformation, see the section on subscribers and targets in theTivoli/Plus User's Guide.

Software Distribution forNetWorker

Tivoli/Plus for NetWorker includes hierarchical, pre-writtenTivoli/Courier file packages for distributing the NetWorker client andserver applications and the NetWorker Database Module for Oracle.Much of the configuration activity normally associated with aTivoli/Courier file package has been done for you. Using Tivoli/Plusfor NetWorker and Tivoli/Courier, you can distribute these NetWorkerapplications across a network.

Distributing NetWorker applications is a two-stage process. First, youset up the NetWorker distribution by configuring a Tivoli/Courier filepackage for each type of platform to which you are distributingNetWorker. For example, if you are distributing NetWorker clientsoftware to both a Solaris and a Sun platform, you need to configure aTivoli/Courier file package twice, once for each platform.

Second, you distribute the configured file packages by running theDistribute NetWorker Software task. This task distributesNetWorker to the selected subscribers for each platform for which youhave configured a Tivoli/Courier file package. You can distributeNetWorker to all configured platforms or choose to distribute to onlya single platform.

Note: Although Tivoli/Plus for NetWorker distributes theNetWorker installation binaries, it does not perform the actualinstallation, since unattended installation is not possible.

Enterprise Event Management

With the Tivoli/Enterprise Console, Tivoli/Plus for NetWorkerprovides a set of filters for identifying events and a set of predefinedcorrelation rules to automate the task of responding to specific events. An event is any significant change in the state of system resources oran application. In the case of Tivoli/Plus for NetWorker, an event isactivity from the NetWorker application or a change in a monitoredresource that affects NetWorker. Examples of events are the startingand stopping of a process or a host going down. Event managementprovides a predefined or automated response to specific events, so thatpotential problems are identified and responded to before causingsystem down time. For example, if a process fails, theTivoli/Enterprise Console can automatically rerun the process. TheTivoli/Enterprise Console can also notify the system administrator ofrepeated process failures that may indicate a more severe problem withan application or the network. For some events, there is no automatedresponse except to be displayed in the Tivoli/Enterprise Console.

Event CorrelationTivoli/Plus for NetWorker also provides event correlation for multipleevents of the same type or for events of different types. If the “cleaningcartridge expired” event occurs more than four times in a week, forexample, a message is sent to the Tivoli/Enterprise Console. Likewise, events of different types can be correlated. The “save group processstarted” event, for example, has a 24-hour timer. When 24 hours haveexpired, this event searches for a corresponding “save group processcompleted” event. If the completion event is not found, the eventseverity level is raised to “critical.”

NetWorker Event Class HierarchyTivoli/Plus for NetWorker utilizes a hierarchical system of eventclasses to categorize events which are unique to the NetWorkerenvironment. These event classes may be used in Tivoli/EnterpriseConsole event group filters to determine which events are directed toa particular event console.

The following diagrams illustrate the event class hierarchy used byTivoli/Plus for NetWorker. The containment level of a particular eventclass is indicated by its horizontal position in the diagram; event classnames to the right are at a lower level than event classes on the left.Event subclass names are positioned directly underneath theirimmediate parent superclass.

Note: Event classes BACKUP and NW_Base are superclasses to allNetWorker event classes.

Defining an event group filter to include a particular event class willincludeall event-subclasses contained by that event class as part of theevent group. For example: filtering on event class NW_Expiration willcapture events from three event classes: NW_Expiring,NW_Expiring_One, and NW_Expiring_Today. However, filtering onevent class NW_Base will capture every single event generated byNetWorker.

TheTivoli/Enterprise Console User’s Guide describes the function ofevent groups and filters within Tivoli/Plus modules in more detail. Formore information on event classes, see Appendix A, "Tivoli/EnterpriseConsole Class Hierarchy" in theTivoli/Enterprise Console EventIntegration Facility Guide.

NetWorker EventsThe following table describes the Tivoli/Plus for NetWorker eventsand rules. The table is organized according to the message that theTivoli/Enterprise Console sends to the system administrator for eachNetWorker event. The percent sign (%s) in the message indicates avariable. The definition for each variable follows the message.

Note: Certain sections in the following tables contain a “see nextsection” reference. This reference indicates that the eventdescribed in the first section is correlated with the eventdescribed in the next section.
