Introduction

DLWin Plus is the METTLER TOLEDO titration software for METTLERTOLEDO titrators DL67 / DL70ES / DL77 or DL50 Graphix / DL53 / DL55 /DL58 or DL31 / DL38. DLWin Plus includes the programs DLWin, DLBaseand DLEval. Using DLWin Plus, several titrators can be operatedsimultaneously. DLWin Plus is easy to use in spite of the many possibilities itoffers.

DLWin is software for the PC that connects computers and titrators. Thisallows you to start and observe analyses on the computer; execute auxiliaryfunctions; view records and print them; view, print and save methods andinstallation data; view and print titration curves.

DLBase is the database application for METTLER TOLEDO titrationsoftware. It allows you to orderly display, compare and save themeasurement data from your titrations. Various filter criteria are available thatallow you to extract the desired data easily. You can define standardoperating procedures (SOPs) with which your results can be ordered andcompared. Data saved in DLBase can be transferred to Excel.

DLEval is used for the post evaluation and recalculation of titrations and theirresults. Using DLEval you can modify raw data found by the titrator, add andmodify results, calculate new statistics and document everything. In contrastto the algorithm based evaluation used by the titrator, DLEval uses agraphical representation of the titration curves. The found equivalence pointsand end points may thus deviate from one another.

4.3.2 Entering sub or superscript characters

Sub- or superscript characters can be entered only using the ASCII codes(see the following tables).

Example: H2SO4You must enter the lowered 2 with Alt0162 and the lowered 4 with Alt0164.

The characters will not, however, be displayed sub- or superscript becausethe character set in Windows does not correspond to the one in the titrator.

Note:⇒  To avoid having entries look like this, it is best to not use special

characters in the resources or installation data of the titrator. In this case, name the titrant H2SO4 rather than H2SO4.

5.2.4 Setup

The menu Setup / Preferences allows you to set the DLWin configuration. The working and the record / report directories can be defined here. Theoption Auto filenames allows the software to name the record / report filesautomatically. When using this option (which we recommend) pleaseremember that DOS does not distinguish between lowercase and(uppercase) capital letters, unlike titrators of the DL70, DL50 and DL30families. When this option is not used you must enter all file names manually.DLBase export must be selected if you wish to import record files toDLBase. DLWin will export the files you have indicated in the Systemwindow under the Setup menu.Die Option Auto conversion allows you to have each record convertedautomatically to EXCEL, ASCII or DBASE format. The text file formats differfrom each other by the markers (;, TAB, \field\,\field\).

Note:⇒  The converted files cannot be read into standard programs directly. The

correct extension must be defined in the specific application program. Theprocess of importing files varies according to application and version.

With titrators of the DL50 family and DL70 family you have two options inthe Record group of the Set preferences dialog. All data may be sent or thedata defined in the titrator’s Record / Report function.

The DL77 also allows you to synchronize methods in the working areas Aand B. To do this, use the option SYNC A<->B.

Note:⇒   Use the Reduced communication protocol

when working with SYNC A<->B.

6.3 DLConv

DLConv is a program that converts record files (REC*.*) to the DLBaseformat.

After you have entered the import and export paths all record files in theimport directory are displayed. You can select individual files or use Selectall for all files.DLConv creates a log file DLConv.txt in the export directory. Information forthe conversion is recorded here.

6.4 Deinstallation

If you install DLWin under Windows NT4.0, Windows 95 or Windows 98, thena deinstallation program is created. DLWin can be removed by selecting theentry DLWin in the Add/Remove programs section of the Control panel thenclicking Add/Remove....Under Windows 3.1x no deinstallation program is created. There the wholeDLWin directory and all work and record directories can be deleted to removeDLWin.

6.5 Troubleshooting

Problem SolutionYou cannot establisha connection to thetitrator.

If your hardware is intact and you are using the rightcable with the proper interfaces, then thecommunication parameters of the titrator probably donot correspond to those of DLWin. Compare thecommunication parameters of the two.

The language doesnot change afterchanging thelanguage.

DLWin must be started afresh after changing thelanguage.

DLWin cannot findmethods (sampledata).

16 bit windows programs, in contrast to the titrator, cannot differentiate between uppercase (capital) andlowercase letters. For method IDs always uselowercase letters or numbers.

The titrator loses theconnection to thecomputer.

DLWin searches the record directory and the DLBasedirectory for the file name in question. If there arevery many record files in these directories theconnection to the titrator may be lost. Clear yourdirectories regularly.

You cannot establisha connection to thetitrator or do nothave the option forestablishing aconnection.

If DLWin was not ended properly the COM servermay still be active. Close the COM server (use thetask bar: right mouse button under Windows 95, 98,NT).

Printer prints slowunder Windows NT

Open a menu to improve printing speed or select'Print directly to the printer' under My Computer /Printers / Properties / Scheduling.

1 Introduction

DLBase is the database application for METTLER TOLEDO titration software. WithDLBase you can conveniently view, arrange, compare and store your titration data.Various filter criteria allow you to extract the desired data easily. Standard operatingprocedures (SOPs) can be defined, with which results can be neatly displayed andcompared. Data files stored in DLBase can be transferred to Excel.

2.2 DLBase installation and setup

2.2.1 If you worked with DLBase V1.0Make a backup of the database DLBase V1.0 (File: DL_DB.MDB). This Database can beconverted with DLBase V2.0 later.

Notice Data files converted in DLBase V2.0 can no longer be read by DLBase V1.0

2.2.2 Creating directories•   Use names with no more than 8 characters for your new directories.•   Create the following directories if they are not yet present:

-  Import directory DLBase (C:\DLBase\Data).-  Record directory DLWin (C:\DLWin\Record\DLxx).-  Working directory DLWin (C:\DLWin\Work\DLxx).

DLxx implies that you should create a directory for each titrator.

2.2.3 DLBase V2.0 installation and startup•   Load CD-ROM.•   Follow instructions given by the installation program.•   Start DLBase. The database DL_DB2.MDB will be opened.•   In the File menu select the Setup function.

•   Enter the Import directory and Lab name.

2.2.4 Data backup•   Make backups of original data regularly (REC*.*), at best daily.•   Import data from DLWin to DLBase and empty the DLWin record directory ‘Record’:

Delete files REC*.* or move them to another directory.•   Create a backup (DL_*****.MDB) of the DLBase database file.

Notice Files created in DLWin at different times may have the same name! Create backups withunambiguous names regularly and move these to separate directories.

Page 130: Titration Software DLWin Plus - METTLER TOLEDO · ⇒ The group Record is shown only for the DL70 and DL50 family titrators. ⇒ The option SYNC AB is shown only for the

METTLER TOLEDO DLBase V2.0 7

2.3 DLWin setupTo facilitate optimal communication between DLWin and DLBase, DLWin must be setupas follows.

Notice Make sure you have installed all necessary directories on your hard disk (see Chapter2.2.2) before defining the following preferences!

2.3.1 Setup in the titrator window•   In the Setup menu select the function Set preferences.•   Select DLBase export and All data.•   Check that the entries for your Working directory and Record directory are correct.

Hints⇒  The SYNC A<->B option is shown only for titrators of the DL70-family, can be used

only with the DL77 and does not influence data transfer in DLBase.⇒  The Record group is shown only for titrators of the DL70 family and DL50 family and

pertains only to the record parameter for data transfer between titrator and computer. These preferences have no influence on records sent from titrator to printer.

Page 131: Titration Software DLWin Plus - METTLER TOLEDO · ⇒ The group Record is shown only for the DL70 and DL50 family titrators. ⇒ The option SYNC AB is shown only for the

8 METTLER TOLEDO DLBase V2.0

2.3.2 Setup in the System window•   In the Setup menu select the function DLBase Directory.•   Enter the directory defined in DLBase as the import directory.•   In the Setup menu select the function Store.

2.3.3 Data conversion with DLConvFiles previously stored in DLWin (REC*.*) can be converted to DLBase format.•   In the DLWin menu Tools select the function DLConv. The following dialog box

appears:

•   Under Import enter the path to the source of the files to be imported.•   Under Export enter the path to where the converted data will be stored.•   In the Select files group select a file or indicate that all files (Select all) are to be

converted.•   Use Convert to start conversion.•   Use Exit to leave DLConv.

DLConv creates a record file DLConv.txt and stores it in the same export directory. Thisfile contains information pertaining to the conversion.

3.1.1 Import filesFiles stored in the import directory defined under Setup can be imported. If such files arefound, the following dialog box appears:

Clicking Yes causes the files to be imported. This dialog is also shown when DLBase isstarted and files are found in the import directory .

Imported files are named as follows:DBnnnnnn.mmm nnnnnn and mmm are continuous numbersIf such a file cannot be imported for any reason, it will be renamed ERnnnnnn.mmm andstays in the import directory. These files can be deleted once they are no longer requiredto find the error.

Hint⇒   Import all samples of a series together. If samples of a series are imported separately,

they will not be recognized as a series.

3.1.2 New databaseYou can create a new database. This is recommendable for databases exceeding acertain size to allow quick access to data.

Enter a file name of five characters or less in the box for ‘New database’. Confirm with OKto open the database. If you enter the name of an existing database, you will receive anerror message.

4 METTLER TOLEDO DLEval V1.0

1 Introduction

DLEval comprises one part of the METTLER TOLEDO titration software for the re-evaluation and recalculation of titrations and their results.

To work with DLEval V1.0, you require DLWin V3.0 and DLBase V2.0. With DLEval rawdata obtained from the titrator can be modified, results can be added or modified, statisticscan be recalculated and everything can be documented. In contrast to the evaluationbased on algorithms performed by the titrator, DLEval works with a graphical evaluation ofthe titration curves. The equivalence points and end points (EQP/EP) found may thusdeviate from another.

Page 154: Titration Software DLWin Plus - METTLER TOLEDO · ⇒ The group Record is shown only for the DL70 and DL50 family titrators. ⇒ The option SYNC AB is shown only for the

METTLER TOLEDO DLEval V1.0 5

2 Setting up DLEvalDLEval runs under the operating systems Windows 95 and higher or Windows NT 4.0(from SP3) and higher. To work with DLEval V1.0 you need DLWin V3.0 and DLBaseV2.0.

This is how you install DLEval:•   Install and load CD-ROM.•   Follow the instructions given by the installation program.•   If DLEval was not installed under C:\DLEval, enter the path for DLEval in DLWin under

Tools / Adapt.

METTLER TOLEDO titration software can be installed on one single computer, or onseveral computers within a network. Thus, it is possible to install DLWin on a computer inthe laboratory and to work with DLEval and DLBase in the office. To do this, the computersmust be connected in a network.

Do the following to install DLEval on several computers within a network:•   Install DLWin on the computer in the laboratory.•   In DLWin under Tools / Adapt delete the entries for DLBase and DLEval, since these

programs cannot be started from the other computer over the network.•   Install DLBase and DLEval on the computer in the office.

A single click of the left mouse key opens the window, in which you intend to work. Themenu, the tool bar and the context menu show you all the commands that can beexecuted.

With a double click of the left mouse key, you can select an EQP/EP.

With a single click of the right mouse key, the Context menu with the following functions isopened:•   Data overview: Save series or Restore series or Refresh view. You can regain

access to the original data by using the command Restore series to even reversemodifications you made already.

•   Property sheet / recalculation: Undo, Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete or Select all. TheUndo command reverses the effects of the last action.

•   Graphics window: Select the display of the curves, have the first or second derivativeshown, or call up an evaluation procedure. With a second Context menu (another clickof the right mouse key), you can Modify current EQP/EP, Insert new EQP/EP or youcan Cancel the evaluation procedure.

Depending on the type of titrator, the position of the EQP/EP and the type of curverepresentation, the following raw data may also be changed:EPOT Potential of the EQP/EP (only DL7x, DL5x: E-V representation)VEX Titrant excess in mL (only DL7x, DL5x)QEX Titrant excess in mmol (only DL7x, DL5x)neq Number of EQP/EP (only DL7x, DL5x: when one EQP/EP is added or deleted)VEQ, Q Volume of each successive EQP/EPVEQ and Q are always calculated on the basis of the previous EQP/EP. When there ismore than one EQP/EP, the raw data VEQ, Q and EPOT are indexed according to theincrease in volume of the titrant (see illustration).

All raw data that have been changed are marked with an *.

Limits of the reevaluation:-   For a DOS (only DL7x), pH/mV-stat or Learn titration, no reevaluation can be

undertaken. You may only modify raw data.-  For EP titrations or KF determinations, the function Insert new EQP/EP can be used

only when there is no previous EQP/EP or a previous one has been deleted.

3.2.1 TangentsThis evaluation procedure is used to evaluate symmetric S-shaped curves. Two tangentsare made to the titration curve. The point of intersection of the titration curve and the linecentered between the two tangents marks the EQP/EP. This evaluation is possible only forE-V curves and corresponds to the titrator evaluation ‘Standard’.

Button for the evaluation procedure Tangents.

•   Position tangents by horizontal movement of the mouse.•   Once the position is optimized, open the Context menu (click right mouse key).•   Select Modify current EQP/EP or Insert new EQP/EP.

METTLER TOLEDO DLEval V1.0 13

3.2.2 TubbsThe evaluation procedure according to Tubbsis used for asymmetric S-shaped titrationcurves. Two circles of the maximum diameter are fitted to the titration curve. The point ofintersection of the titration curve and the line connecting the midpoints of the two circlesmarks the EQP/EP. This evaluation is possible only for E-V curves and corresponds to thetitrator evaluation ‘Asymmetric’.

Button for the evaluation procedure Tubbs.

•   Position circles by moving the mouse. Clicking the centered marker cross activates thecircular template.

•   Once the position is optimized, open the Context menu (click right mouse key).•   Select Modify current EQP/EP or Insert new EQP/EP.

You can determine the size ofthe circles and number ofcircles as follows:•   Select Settings / Tubbsthe

following dialog appears.•   Select Size of circles and

Number of circles for bothtemplates.

•   Confirm with OK.

3.2.3 ManualThe manual evaluation procedure can be used for all titration curves. Using the cursor, youcan insert a new EQP/EP or modify an existing one at any desirable point of the curve. It isrecommendable to zoom in on the interesting portion of the curve and to have the firstderivative shown for E-V curves before the evaluation is performed. The titrators do notsupport a corresponding evaluation.

Button for the evaluation procedure Manual.

•   Position the marker cross by horizontal movement of the mouse. The matching x/y-values are shown at the top of the display on the right side.

•   Once the position is optimized, open the Context menu (click right mouse key).•   Select Modify current EQP/EP or Insert new EQP/EP.

3.2.4 SegmentedThis evaluation procedure is used for L-shaped titration curves (conductometric titrations, amperometric vitamin C determination, photometrically indicated titration, etc.) as well asfor curves with a maximum or minimum. In contrast to the evaluation ‘Segmented’ on thetitrator, it allows evaluation of titration curves with a first derivative that is not an S-shapedcurve. The evaluation of a segmented curve follows by positioning two lines on the desiredportion of the curve. The projected point of intersection of the two lines on the titrationcurve marks the EQP/EP. This evaluation is possible only for E-V curves.

Button for the evaluation procedure Segmented.

•   Position both lines by horizontal movement of the mouse. Clicking the circularreference marker activates the other line.

•   Once the position is optimized, open the Context menu (click right mouse key).•   Select Modify current EQP/EP or Insert new EQP/EP.

3.2.5 ExtrapolationThis evaluation procedure is used when continuous post-consumption caused by a side-reaction is present, such as for a KF titration. It is possible to approximate the actual endpoint of the titration by extrapolating to time t=0. The evaluation is performed by fitting aline to the flat part of the titration curve. The point of intersection between the line and thevolume axis is the volume at the EQP/EP (extrapolation to t=0). This evaluation is possibleonly for V-t curves.

Button for the evaluation procedure Extrapolation.

•   Position the line by horizontal movement of the mouse.•   Once the position is optimized, open the Context menu (click right mouse key).•   Select Modify current EQP/EP or Insert new EQP/EP.

Hint:⇒   Please note that extrapolation also eliminates the effect of Drift. Thus you should avoid

using drift compensation (COMP for DL31/38) when calculating the results.

3.3 Working with the property sheetThe property sheet allows you to calculate results and statistics, modify raw data, take alook at sample information as well as to specify the report to print the data or curves. Theproperty sheet is composed of six property pages:Recalculation, Results, Statistics, Raw data, Sample information and Report.

Page 167: Titration Software DLWin Plus - METTLER TOLEDO · ⇒ The group Record is shown only for the DL70 and DL50 family titrators. ⇒ The option SYNC AB is shown only for the

18 METTLER TOLEDO DLEval V1.0

3.3.1 RecalculationThis property page allows you to modify existing results or add new results. Themodifications always pertain to all the samples of a series. The titrators of the DL70 family or the DL31 or DL38 save the formulae used in the methodin the database automatically. For titrators of the DL50 family, you must use the commandFormula from file to import formulae from a method listing that was previously saved inDLWin.The pull-downlist box can be used to select from a list of available choices.

Result no. Number of the result to be recalculated.Result name Name of the result.Result unit Unit of the result.Decimal places Number of decimal places for R and C.Formula R Calculation formula.Constant C Constant.

New Produces a new result.Formula from file... Opens the dialog to find the method listing.Formula assistant... Opens the dialog with a list of symbols for formulae.Calculation Recalculates formulae and constants.Print Prints the view of this property page.

In DLEval, the Index of the constant must correspond to that of the result. Thus, C3 isalways a constant of R3.

The following mathematical operations can be used in the formulae:

Addition + Subtraction -Multiplication * Division /Logarithm base 10 lg (x) Logarithm base e ln (x)Exponential function base 10 pw (x) Exponential function base e ex (x)Square sq (x) Square root sr (x)

The symbols used in the Formula assistant may bear an Index (see Chapter 8 of theOperating instructions of the DL5x and DL7x titrators).

Index type Example Explanationi VEQ2 This index indicates the ith occurrence of a raw value within the

methods function. VEQ2 is the volume of the 2nd EQP/EP of thefirst or the only methods function (titration).

[i] VEQ2[3] This index indicates the ith occurrence of the methods function.VEQ2[3] is the volume of the 2nd EQP/EP of the 3rd methodsfunction (titration).

i R4, H4 For results and auxiliary values, the user enters the number in themethod.

The raw data c, t, CONC and N are not indexed by the titrator. Instead, they are assignedas the method proceeds. Since DLEval possesses no information about this, you mustselect the proper value for these raw data in the following dialog:

Hint⇒   The Index 1 is optional and can be omitted (i.e.: VEQ1[1] = VEQ).

3.3.3 StatisticsThis property page allows you to create new statistics for the results. The list top leftshows you all the results available for the whole series. The list top right indicates whichresults have been selected for statistics. Pressing the button Exclude opens a dialog thatallows you to exclude single samples from the statistics. The list on the bottom shows theresults of the statistics. The column n indicates the number of samples used for thestatistics for each result. If the column Unit shows the symbol [?], then the results ofvarious samples have different units (DL31 only); the statistics are not calculated in thiscase. The statistical data produced by DLEval (mean value x, standard deviation s andrelative standard deviation srel) are not marked with a *.

Exclude Opens a dialog that allows you to exclude single samples fromthe statistics.

4.1 Hardware and software requirements-   Computer: IBM PC, PS/2 or 100% compatible computer with minimum 90 MHz

Pentium processor, at least 5.5 MByte memory on the hard disk and minimum 16MByte RAM; Mouse supported by Windows; CD-ROM drive. Windows 95 and higher orWindows NT 4.0 (from SP3) and higher.

-   Monitor: graphics card and appropriate color monitor (Super VGA, 800 x 600, better1024 x 768 or higher).

-  Printer: supported by Windows.-  DLWin V3.0 and DLBase V2.0.

4.2 Extent of delivery-  CD-ROM-  Operating instructions

The program DLEval can be purchased individually or as a component of DLWin Plus.

4.3 Possible problems-  DL31 or DL38: When the density of the sample is used in the calculation of a result, the

calculation proceeds correctly on the titrator. The formula will, however, be transferredto DLWin incorrectly. A recalculation in DLEval will then lead to an incorrect result. To correct this: replace ‘m’ (sample size) in the formula by ‘m*d’ (sample size *density).

-   Formulae containing conditions, such as VEQ(0<EPOT<10), cannot be used inDLEval.

-  The raw data value CSTAT cannot be used in formulae for DLEval.-   If an EQP/EP comes to lie slightly to the side of the curve, the following reason may

apply: DLEval creates curves by connecting adjacent measurement points with straightlines. In the determination of the exact location of the EQP/EP, algorithms relying on anatural curvature are used. The fewer the measurement points in the area to bedetermined are in number, the larger the deviation may be.
