Maestro Tito Muñoz continues his triumphant and dynamic inaugural season with Aaron Copland’s quintessential masterpiece, Appalachian Spring. Reminiscent of an idealized America, Copland’s harmonic and luxurious Pulitzer Prize-winning ballet suite has become one of the most inspiring and symbolic works of the 20th century. In this program Maestro Muñoz also debuts classical saxophonist Amy Dickson; the #1 UK Classical artist who has won Breakthrough Artist of the Year. Hear her unique sound in John Williams’ lively and energetic “Escapades” from Catch Me If You Can, as well as in Jennifer Higdon’s Soprano Sax Concerto which has been called a “significant testament to beauty.” The evening begins with Morton Gould’s Spirituals.

This gripping and emotional symphony brings an unparalleled emotional honesty to orchestral music. The program also features The Phoenix Symphony’s world renowned and Valley favorite Concertmaster Steven Moeckel performing Mozart’s enchanting and lively Turkish Violin Concerto No. 5. Music Director Laureate Michael Christie returns for his second and final appearance in the 2014/15 season to lead The Phoenix Symphony in a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the births of both Jean Sibelius and Carl Nielsen. This concert features Jean Sibelius’ triumphant and enveloping Symphony No. 5. The evening also includes The Phoenix Symphony’s own principal flutist Viviana Cumplido Wilson, with Nielsen’s intimate and melodic Flute Concerto. The program begins with Edvard Grieg’s expansive Peer Gynt including the ever popular theme “In the Hall of the Mountain King.”

This program also presents Schumann’s challenging yet richly expressive and popular second symphony and Mexican-born Silvestre Revueltas’ Redes Suite, representing his score from the powerful Mexican film “The Wave.”

Join Maestro Tito Muñoz and his convincing musicianship on the podium in an evening of beautiful and diverse choral repertoire with The Phoenix Symphony Chorus and the world-renowned Phoenix Boys Choir. The evening begins with Vaughan Williams’ Magnificat, a lyrical expression of joy and thanksgiving. The evening continues with Brahms’ Schicksalslied or “Song of Destiny,” which explores the competing existence of deities and mortals. The evening concludes with both choirs singing Kodály’s rarely performed Psalmus hungaricus, a bombastic and defiant work based on scriptures’ Psalm 55 to mark the 50th anniversary of the unification of Buda and Pest in Hungary.

Praised by the Cleveland Plain Dealer as “impossible to resist, captivating with lyricism, tonal warmth, and boundless enthusiasm,” violinist Giora Schmidt makes his Phoenix Symphony debut with Bruch’s enduring first violin concerto. The program opens with Finding Rothko, an enchanting piece reflecting on four of the abstract works by Russian artist Mark Rothko by the young American composer, Adam Schoenberg.

Orchestra. An alumnus of the National Conducting Institute, Mr. Muñoz made his professional conducting debut in 2006 with the National Symphony
Orchestra. That same year, he made his Cleveland Orchestra debut at the Blossom Music Festival at the invitation of David Zinman. Mr. Muñoz
continues to maintain a close relationship with The Cleveland Orchestra, where he has returned to conduct annually, including a critically acclaimed
subscription week, stepping in on short notice for Pierre Boulez.
Mr. Muñoz conducted his first performances with The Joffrey Ballet and The Cleveland Orchestra in the summer of 2009. This successful collaboration
led to further performances in the summer of 2010 as well as an invitation to tour with The Joffrey Ballet in the 2010/11 season. In the 2012/13 season,
he conducted The Cleveland Orchestra’s first complete Nutcracker performances and in summer 2013 he led the orchestra’s first staged Rite of Spring,
both with the Joffrey Ballet. Mr. Muñoz has appeared with the symphony orchestras of Alabama, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Columbus, Eugene, Hartford,
Houston, Grand Rapids, Indianapolis, Kitchener-Waterloo, Phoenix, and San Antonio, among others. Other recent and upcoming engagements include
return performances with The Florida Orchestra and the Detroit, Kitchener-Waterloo, Pasadena, Phoenix and Toledo symphonies as well as subscription
debuts with the Naples Philharmonic, Rochester Philharmonic, Sarasota Orchestra, and the Pacific Symphony. Festival appearances have included the
Chautauqua Symphony and the Grant Park Orchestra. Following engagements in Europe with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra the Opéra de Rennes,
Mr. Muñoz has upcoming debuts with the Danish Radio Sinfonietta, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken, Luxembourg Philharmonic, and
the Orchestre National de Lorraine. Future engagements include debuts with the Auckland Philharmonia, the Sydney Symphony, and the Sao Paolo
State Symphony Orchestra. Committed to working with young artists, Mr. Muñoz has conducted performances at the Aspen Music Festival, Boston
University Tanglewood Institute, Cleveland Institute of Music, Indiana University, Kent/Blossom Music Festival, Music Academy of the West, New
World Symphony, Oberlin Conservatory, and the New England Conservatory as well as a nine-city tour with the St. Olaf College Orchestra. His recent
debut with the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto led to an immediate re-engagement. Additionally, he has had an ongoing relationship with the
Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra and the Portland Youth Philharmonic and has worked with conducting students both at the American Academy
of Conducting at Aspen and the Cleveland Institute of Music.
During the summers of 2004 through 2006, Mr. Muñoz attended the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen where he studied with David
Zinman and Murry Sidlin, and participated in master classes with Asher Fisch, Leon Fleisher, George Manahan, David Robertson, and Leonard
Slatkin. He is the winner of the Aspen Music Festival’s 2005 Robert J. Harth Conductor Prize and the 2006 Aspen Conducting Prize, returning to
Aspen as the festival’s Assistant Conductor in the summer of 2007 and then as a guest conductor in summer 2011.
An accomplished violinist, Mr. Muñoz began his musical training in the Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program, continuing studies on
violin and composition at the Manhattan School of Music Preparatory Division. He attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and
Performing Arts, and was a member of the InterSchool Orchestras of New York and New York Youth Symphony, where he also served as Apprentice
Conductor. He furthered his training at the Aaron Copland School of Music, Queens College, as a violin student of Daniel Phillips.

In this program Maestro Muñoz also debuts classical saxophonist Amy Dickson; the #1 UK Classical artist who has won Breakthrough Artist of the Year.
