CHAPTER ONE

How to customize this template

This is a formatted Microsoft Word 2003 document, which can easily be customized and adapted in compatible software, Layout and procedures may differ in other packages.

1. The first thing to do is rename and SAVE this document as the title of your book. Use hyphens to separate words.

2. On the Front Cover, highlight and change Title of Your Book, which is set in 26pt Helvetica. Also, change Your Name underneath, which is set in 14pt Helvetica Italic.

You may change the cover completely or follow our layout and insert your own photo/illustration or select an image from a free stock library like http://www.sxc.hu/

3. Next, on the Title Page, change Title of Your Book, set in 20pt Georgia and Your Name, set in 14pt Georgia Italic.

4. While on the Title Page, change the Copyright notice to the year you wrote this work followed by your name. Set in 9pt Georgia Italic. You could also use this page to insert Dedications, Acknowledgements or a Table of Contents, in 9pt Georgia Italic. Alternatively, place these or any other matter on a separate page.

5. The last thing to do is highlight and COPY the text from your manuscript. Then place your cursor to the left of the word ‘This’ in the first paragraph of this page, hold down your mouse and drag until you have highlighted all pages. PASTE in your text, delete the blue title and close the space. Extra pages will be added automatically. Note: spelling and grammar checking are ‘hidden’ so please uncheck these in Preferences.

6. If the text does not format correctly, select Match Destination Formatting from the little clipboard icon you’ll see at the end of the imported text. Alternatively, Highlight your text and select Clear Formatting from the Styles menu.

If you have problems formatting, open up the original template and use as a guide to reformat as per the details below.

Formatting: paragraph alignment is JUSTIFIED with LINE-SPACING set at 15pt and FIRST-LINE INDENT at 8mm. The font used in the body text is 11pt GEORGIA, which is a standard font installed on both Windows and Mac operating systems. We consider this to be the most legible of the standard fonts when viewed on-screen and in print. You may of course change the font but it must be a SERIF font and the text must be JUSTIFIED for optimum readability. Chapter headings are centered and set in 16pt Georgia Italic.
