TIRITEA SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 5 June 2014, No 17 We hope you all enjoyed the long weekend. Wasn’t the weather fantastic? As mentioned last week, the newsletter is a day later than usual this week with Monday being a hol- iday and both Vicki and Julie attending a Support Staff Con- ference in Wanganui yesterday. We’ve continued with our visitors at Tiritea School this week. Yesterday, we had ten Year 1 & 2 teachers from various schools in the Manawatu visiting. They were on the NZEI Bus Tour and visited five different schools during the day, spending about five minutes in each class to gain a great new idea or resource. Thank you to our teachers for hosting them CHALLENGE TIME: We are looking for a lat- eral thinker who can solve a small problem. The netball hoops are due to be in the court so our netball girls can practise properly, however, the holes in the ground which the netball poles slot in to have been partly filled with loose debris and when the poles are placed in the holes the hoops are well above the desired height (sorry Dave, we forgot to put the caps in!). A chocolate Freddo will go to the person who can successfully remove the debris and place the poles in the ground. Ready, set, go! From Mr James As part of Tiritea’s commitment to being a heart healthy school and supporting the Heart Foundation we are gearing up for the upcoming Jump Rope 4 Heart challenge by participating in the Jump Rope programme. This involves com- pleting skipping skills and activities dur- ing school time and ending in a school wide challenge day on Tuesday 17 June. Part of the process involves setting skipping goals and collecting sponsorship money. Whilst the majority of the money goes back into continuing the growth of the Jump Rope programme across New Zealand, Tiritea School will benefit from a rebate. We ask for your support in this ven- ture by encouraging your children to collect sponsorship money and return it to school as soon as possible. Please read the attached pamphlet and get behind this heart health initiative. In my experience, it may be easier to collect a do- nation rather than a certain amount per skip or minute, just my 2 cents worth! Thanks, Mr James. Last week Matai did a few experiments with Mrs Frost on the mak-

ing of sherbet and its reaction with water. We used baking soda,

icing sugar, Raro, and citric acid to make our sherbet. We mixed all

the ingredients together except the Raro and then we tasted it and

most of us thought it didn’t taste very good. Then we added the

Raro and then most of us liked it. We added our sherbet to some

water and it fizzed up and became liquid. It was an exciting experi-

ment and was delicious to eat.

Someone is to go on the ‘Thinking Seat’ for persistently hiding my lunch!! On Tuesday it was on top of the cup-board in my office pretending to be a Fire Chief. Hint - the perpetrator is somebody tall!!

Children have been having a great time building forts in the play-

ground. Some were so dedicated they even came back over the

long weekend!

I went to the Napier Aquarium. I saw the diver

Out the back of the school at the end of the library, there is a heap of offcuts of wood and some old tree branches. It would probably make excellent firewood. If you’re interested, please come and have a look. We’d love to tidy the area up.
