Tips on Writing Writing Assignments: Tollefson (2006) notes that shaping a writing ass ignment to get what you want from a student is not easy . He describes some keys to wr iting a writing assignment that help elicit the respon se you are looking for from your students: 1) Regar dless of they assignment you decide upo n, spend some time in the classroom preparing your students for the work you expect them to provide to you. For example, if you are assigning a book reivew, provide the stude nts wtih several exa mples of goo d reviews that they can model from, From the discussion in the classroom, students can better underst and your expectations and grading criteria, and they will begin to learn how to critique a piece of writing-their own and others, 2) If it is a long term paper or research paper, plan to lay out the assig nme nt in steps and devise several warm-up exercises that students can complete bef ore the final paper is due. This allows students to practice basic paper writing skills such as creati ng thesis statements, sum ma rizing research, composing abstracts and citing sources -the basics. They also need writing activities that develop the congnitive skills required to procude a well thought out and prepared paper. 3) Tr y to ask only one question as students are more likely to produce coherent, well- organized essays if you present them with only one question at a time, If you combine two or more questions in an assi gnment , re mind them to answer all of the questions posed . 4) Use typ o g raph y to distinguish subord inate points-place the key question in a paragr aph of its' ow n and place all other points rega rding answering the ques tion in a separate paragraph, 5) Phrase your qu estion utilizing the wor ds "how? " or "why" as this gives students a head start in devel opin g a clear thesis. In contrast, yes/no questions or who, what, where and when que sti on s te nd to prompt list-li ke res po nses , 6) C lar ify your terminology-Be sure that students understand what you mean by words such as "analyze" , "c omp are/contrast" or "conclude", Be precise in what you want them to do and don't ass ume they know what you mean, 7) Sketc h out a response to the question as though you were a student and dou ble-check it for clar ity , foc us and compl eteness-your students should be working on interpreting the material they arc studying and not the paper topic or exam question itself. 8) Spec ify format requirements including length, reference, form. presentation of charts and tables, etc . 9) Re me mber that your best students will do well no matter what-it is the rest of yo ur students that will sink or swim depending on the clarity of the topic written by you. 1) Regardless of they assignment you decid e upon, spend some time in the classroom preparing yo ur st udents for the work you ex pec t them to provide to yo u. 1) Dem onstrate how writ ing is used for learning and thinking in your discipline: e.g. by analysing the sty le and organizat ion of readings, looking at examples of good j ournali sm , asking invited speakers about their writing pr acti ces, referrin g to your own writing.

2) Demo nstrate your awareness of writing as a process and a part oflearning: e.g. gradual , requiring "deep" revision and rethinking; difficult but rewarding; necessar y for exploration of ideas.

3) Ask stude nts for various modes of writing, not always essays and reports: e.g. government briefing paper, environmental impact sta tement, museum display notes, letter to the author of your textbook, manua ls for clients or the public, abstract of a required reading, sum mary of one side of a controv ersy, interpretation of given set of data, solution of a quandary.
