Tips for Making the Most of the Career & Internship Expo

Prepare a short introduction (elevator pitch). Include your name, major, skills, and area of interest. Focus! Concentrate on the list you prepped; start at the top and work your way down. Demonstrate professionalism. Be patient and polite; you will likely have to wait to speak with a recruiter. Use your time well. Practice good time management (allocate your time wisely) and create realistic goals. Next steps. After speaking with a recruiter, ask them about the next steps (this includes getting their business card). Should you apply for the position(s) online or by email? Take notes. Jot down notes about the conversation to remind yourself what was discussed. Note any information that may be helpful to include in the thank you letter. Follow-up. Send a thank you note or e-mail to each recruiter you met with. Engage in the next steps. Follow the recommendations the recruiter offered during your conversation.

Ask Questions: This is your chance to ask some questions. Asking good questions will leave a good impression and show your interest and enthusiasm. The following may serve as a guideline for questions:

● What are the day-to-day responsibilities of the position? ● What are some typical career paths and advancement opportunities? ● Is there an orientation or training for new employees? ● What are the long-range plans for the organization? ● Expectations regarding travel and/or relocation expenses ● Multicultural diversity and sensitivity ● Geographical area – the cost of living, housing, and schools ● Hiring process/timeline ● How you should follow-up

● About salary or benefits ● About job pressures, overtime, or morale

Following Up: After the Career Expo ends, send a thank you letter within 24-48 hours. A typed letter is considered the most professional. In many situations, an email is appropriate if the organization indicated that this is their preferred method of contact or if there is a quick turnaround time requirement to fill the position. A hand-written note is considered more personal. Your letter should be brief (no longer than one page) and include the following:

● Thank the interviewer for their time and the chance to learn more about the organization.

● Reaffirm your interest and enthusiasm for a position with the organization. ● Mention something from your conversation to remind the interviewer who you are.

Reiterate any important points that were discussed or that you were not able to express during your interview.

● Describe in one or two sentences why your skills, experience, and background make you the best candidate.

If you do not hear from the recruiter by the date that was promised, it would be appropriate to call or email the recruiter (unless candidates are asked not to do so) and inquire about the status.
