Wide Bay Readers Cup 2018
Mrs Morris and Mrs Yates would like to congratulate the teamswho recently competed at the 2018 Wide Bay Readers Cup.They challenged themselves to read all 5 books, workedcollaboratively and continued developing a love of reading.
The competition was held on Tuesday 12th June 2018 at XavierCollege, Hervey Bay. With 30 teams (15 schools) in the Year 5/6 Competition, our Team 1 did a fantastic job of coming with31½ points out of 60 (an improvement on their score last year)and only 2 points behind equal 2nd. Team 2 unfortunately didnot score as well but had fun anyway.
Top 3 Schools were:
1. Xavier Catholic College 38½2. Sandy Strait State School 33½ (+2 from tie breakerquestion)3. Torquay State School 33½
We were lucky to have a guest author this year….Louise Guy,author of the year 5/6 title, ‘The Secret World of Curly Jones,Book 1: New Worlds’ was our quiz master on the day. Shebrought copies of her new ‘The Secret World of Curly Jones,Book 2: Old Worlds’ (don’t worry, we brought two for thelibrary). The students asked questions and had an opportunityfor photographs and book signing.
It is always quite special that our students get to compete at aregional and state level similar to sporting competitions and tomeet other students with an equal passion for books. We thankthe Parents, Year 6 Teachers and Specialists for their supportin allowing our students to have this opportunity.

Tinana Chess Students Show GreatSportsmanship at Term 2 Tournament
Sportsmanship is a vital part of chess and students are taughtearly on about how to react when they win a game and to thinkabout the feelings of the opposing players. Indeed, one of thebest things we encourage at tournaments is a winning playershowing the opponent what they could have done, helpingthem improve. On the flip side, I teach them that when theylose a game, they are in fact gaining more knowledge so wedon’t regard it as losing. Our motto is, 'Don't be afraid of losing,be afraid of playing a game and not learning something' DanHeisman.
I am extremely proud of our Tinana Chess Club Students.Students showed all the 5 keys to Success and had 'hard fun!'at the Term 2 Tournament hosted at Tinana State School.
