1. Status of CCS-related activities
Timor-Leste is newly independent country since
2002.
We need to enhance our human resource knowledge and
capacity;
Set up our legal frameworks and policies;
Institutional development;
Defining objectives and focus areas;
Participation and working group.

CCOP CO2 Storage Mapping Program (CCS-M)
Bali, 30 April – 03 May 2013
1. Status of CCS-related activities
a. Legal framework
We have any legal framework for regulating our mineral
resources, mainly petroleum resources from offshore
areas such as Timor Sea;
We still not have any specific legal framework for CO2
capture and storage;
So, we are learn on how to prepare our self to set up any
legal framework related to CCS.

b. Specific research work
Our main research is focusing on mineral and
petroleum resources, environment and related to the
CO2 we still not carry out any specific research;
c. Government initiatives
Set up the legal framework related CO2 capture and
storage;
Establish the research institution to take responsibility
for the geosciences and mineral resources areas
including CCS;5

c. Government initiatives
Institute of Petroleum and Geology-IPG is one of the
public institute below the Ministry of Petroleum and
Mineral Resources-MPRM which is responsible for
geosciences and mineral resources research and
investigation.

2. Potential geological storage of CO2
We have potential geological storage of CO2 in
both offshore and onshore areas;
We have oil and gas production in the offshore area (Timor
Sea), mainly from the JPDA-Joint Petroleum Development
Area;
Two larges of oil and gas fields have been found in the
Timor Sea area such as Bayu Undan and Greater Sunrise
fields.
We considered that both oil and gas fields are known to be
effective stores for CO2.7

3. Future plans-CCS
Human resource capacity building;
Set up planning and objectives;
Identify the potential geological storage of CO2;
Research and investigation relating to the CCS;
Maximum participation in regional CCOP
programs related to CCS;
Regional good partnership establishment and
team work.

CCOP CO2 Storage Mapping Program (CCS-M)
Bali, 30 April – 03 May 2013
Develop the new study and technology to CCS and
it is an important aspect to reduce the CO2
emission in the CCOP region;
CCS as a portfolio of energy technology that can
be applied to reduce the CO2 emission;
CO2 capture is very important for those countries
that have any sources of CO2;
Its possible to use CO2 to enhance oil recovery
(EOR).
