Garden Notes for JuneBy Fiona Davies

As I write these notes, the May Day Bank Holiday weekend is drawing to a closeand the weather has been glorious; wall-to-wall sunshine with temperatures wellabove average. I have taken the plunge and planted out courgettes into the vegpatch and put my tomatoes and chilli peppers in their permanent summer placesin the greenhouse. Fingers crossed for no late frost and no cold wet weather!Other jobs done this weekend include the sowing of really tender seeds such asFrench beans, Runner Beans and cucumbers. I always start everything off inpots or seed cells because my success rate is so much higher. Once bean seed-lings have reached 5 inches or so, gradually harden off outside so they are readyfor planting out at the beginning of June. Cucumbers also need reliable warmweather so hang on until June to plant these out in your greenhouse. Rememberthat your greenhouse must be kept ventilated and during June especially you mayneed to shade it to avoid scorching your plants. I use an old white sheet and justthrow it over the roof to create shade.

This is also the time to plant out summer bedding, containers and hangingbaskets. With the help of my green-fingered youngest daughter, we havegerminated and potted on zinnias, nacotiana, cleome, marigolds and Echinacea.Hopefully her hard work will pay off and, as we get towards the middle of July,we should have a fantastic display.

June is a month in the garden where you need to watch your plants carefully.Tomato side shoots must be pinched out and plants that are beginning to get talland think about flopping over will need to be staked. You should also thinkabout dead-heading as you walk around you garden. Plants that will particularlybenefit from this include roses, cosmos, dahlias, lupins, buddleia and all yourannual bedding plants. It will certainly encourage them to produce more flowersrather than using their energy on the formation of fruit and seed. Don’t forgetthat June brings with it long summer evenings culminating in the longest day ofthe year on Thursday 21st, so do try to make the most of all those extra hours ofenjoyment in the garden.

Fiona

FERNHURST LUNCH CLUBPaul continues to conjure up more delightful lunches and the 19thApril meeting was no exception with everyone enjoying gammonsteaks, cauliflower cheese, jacket potatoes and vegetables with ricepudding and jam to follow.

The 3rd May session was very memorable (apart from the delightfulfare of ham or cheese quiche, chips and beans, with chocolate gateauxto follow and tea/coffee and chocolate mint sticks) because we wereable to celebrate Marjory Heaton’s 90th birthday - amazing! - and hersurprise gifts of chocolates and wine. Another appreciation followedas Matt Welland was thanked for all his years of service on the“Driving Rota” and we hope that he will enjoy choosing some nicemusic (jazz!) with his voucher. It was indeed a busy session becausewe held a bric-a-brac stall with a delicious array of home-made cakesgiven so generously by Marjory, Anne Pennington, Christine Smalleyand someone else whom I cannot mention! But my thanks to all whopurchased from us and helped to make it a bit of fun, because sharingtogether is what it’s all about.

I am happy to report that Doug Hale is home from the Royal SurreyHospital after breaking five ribs due to a fall. It is still painful butthese things take time and I’m sure he will be out and about againsoon. Such a courageous man.

Watch this space for a report on the Revels Stall - pray for goodweather!

For more information about the club, just ring Janet on 653037.

Best wishes, Penny Self

Tales from the Archive

JAMES HILL, A GENTLE MAN OF FERNHURSTThe white, rough-cast shed at Fernhurst Crossroads has seen many occupants anduses, but for at least forty of its years it was the sanctum of James Hill. Hill wasmany things: secretary of the local Foresters (a self-financing health and socialservices organisation before the NHS), school correspondent and churchwarden atSt Margaret’s.

In his day the shed consisted of undressed oak slabs topped by a chip-thatchedroof and there, when his more active life was finished, he was mostly to be foundsurrounded by the odds and ends of his trade, nails, screws and all sorts ofgadgets. The shed became the ‘village record office’ where he attended to hiscorrespondence, wrote up his minutes, balanced accounts etc.

His day, however, was constantly interrupted by villagers from all walks of lifecoming to talk over village affairs, seek personal advice, air a grievance, etc. Allwere met with a calm, measured response and if any came with gossip ortittle-tattle found their anger or malice tempered by his presence. Advice orstricture would be given in the most palatable way, often with a touch of humourthat left the recipient feeling uplifted.

If you look at the old photos of Fernhurst in the Community Room in the VillageHall there is James Hill in the one of Church Road, every inch the kindly villageelder. Alice Tudor in ‘Fernhurst: The Story of a Sussex Village’ said ‘He died in1925, aged seventy-nine and Fernhurst has not filled his place’.

If you would like to know more about this story, or research other local topics, the Archive is open on Tuesdays, 2.30-5pm in the Village Hall. Other times byarrangement.

FERNHURST CRICKET CLUBfernhurstcricketclub.org.uk@FernhurstCC

pic: Fernhurst CCSunday XI & TheHeartaches

"It's the Circle of Life/And it moves us all ..."So wrote Sir Tim Ricein the classic tale ofThe Lion King. And, onthis sparkling Springday, on the soggy savannahs of West Sussex, Sir Tim's 'Heartaches' team were very muchthe lion, while Fernhurst's plucky Sunday XI played the part of the doomedwildebeest. Peter Bristowe and Chris Williams made promising starts for FCC but oncethey were out there was a clatter of middle order wickets. Partnership of the day wasmade by the youngest and oldest players, Jude Unwin and Geoff Howe, the latterfinishing on 48 as FCC notched up 114. The Heartaches won by seven wickets but, asalways, it was a jolly affair that Sir Tim really can't lose as he is one of FCC's VicePresidents! There was better news for the club's league teams ...

Fernhurst's 1st XI were runners-up in Div 2 of the I'Anson league last season and they gotoff to a cracking start in 2018 with a win away at Elstead. Wicketkeeper/batsman HarryLambert top scored with 57 as FCC racked up 245 off 45 overs. Elstead finished on 101,Fernhurst skipper Tristan Rissik taking three wickets.

The newly-promoted 2nd XI started life in Div 5 against a strong Badshot Lea team.Young FCC strike bowler Sam Meier quickly removed both the openers and club stalwartGeoff Howe claimed three wickets. At one point Badshot were 35-9 but they managed toset a target of 70. At 30-1 things looked under control but a steady fall of wickets andsome accurate bowling left Fernhurst on 50-7. Nervous times but Steve Tytler (16*)calmly assisted by Josh Whittington hit some big shots to see the home side over the linewith 12 overs to spare.

If you see one of our flags flying you know one of our many senior and junior teams isplaying so please do come to support the Mighty Ferns.

FERNHURST CHORAL SOCIETYFriends of Fernhurst Choral SocietyAlthough many inhabitants of Fernhurst are, incredibly, still unaware of ourexistence, as I discovered when talking to people at the Revels a couple of yearsago, Fernhurst Choral Society (FCS) was formed in 1953, 65 years ago, to sing atthe village pageant in Fernhurst to celebrate the Coronation of Queen ElizabethII.Since then we have grown steadily and now have over 90 members, most ofwhom (sadly) do not live in Fernhurst but who come to the village because weare a dynamic, mixed-voice choir that performs excellently a wide range ofmusic from many different composers. Chronologically the latter range fromPurcell and Handel through to Bernstein, Chilcott and Rutter, with a variety ofstyles, resonances and influences. We perform three concerts a year, including at the annual Petersfield MusicalFestival, where we are usually accompanied by professional musicians and usetalented young singer soloists, many of whom are at the start of their professionalcareers. These activities incur significant expenditure of course – for example, our concert of the Verdi Requiem next month has a budget of over £6,000 – andwe need people who are willing to support us by donating money regularly andbecoming a Friend of the Society. In addition to helping us to continue to thrive, Friends who give an annualdonation (with a minimum of £50) receive advance information about ourconcerts and events, to enable them to plan ahead; reserved seats for FCSconcerts; a listing in FCS concert programmes; a free programme for each FCSconcert; and two free tickets for our Open Rehearsal each March and ourinformal Christmas Party/concert each December. WHO CAN RESIST?!!Tickets for the Verdi Requiem concert in St. Paul’s Church, Chichester, onSaturday 9th June are still available, and cost £16 for adults and £8 for childrenunder 14. They are available from me and via the Society’s websitewww.fernhurstchoralsociety.org.uk; from Chichester Tourist Information Office,Ackerman Music of Chichester, and Chris and Val at the Fernhurst newsagents. If you would like more information on the choir, please contact Tina Litchfield, the Membership Secretary, on 01730 816542 or [email protected]; meon 01428 654893 or [email protected]; or go towww.fernhurstchoralsociety.org.ukIf you are interested in becoming one of our valued Friends/supporters, pleasecontact me or Camilla Hooper on 01428 653623 or [email protected] may also follow us on Facebook (Fernhurst Choral Society) or viaTwitter @FernhurstChoral

Fernhurst & Midhurst Table Tennis ClubHaslemere League Junior Tournament Final held in Fernhurst

Twenty-Four of the top juniors from all over the Haslemere league area turned up for thistournament at the Village Hall the other night. Haslemere, Loxwood, Headley, Petersfieldand of course Fernhurst were all represented. Fernhurst by 9 players!! The entrants wereinitially put into 8 groups with the winners of each group qualifying for the main tourna-ment & all the others progressing in to the Plate Event.

The Plate eventually came down to a final between SamChilds (Petersfield) and Jude Weir (Fernhurst) which Samfinally won 3:1.

In the main competition there was an early surprise as thefavourite Fateen Yasir (Haslemere) lost to 12 year oldDaniel Blake (Petersfield).

Daniel eventually made itthrough to the final and in athrilling top quality match beatanother 12 year old JamesVincent (Fernhurst) 3:1.Annoyingly for me there werethree Fernhurst players in thesemi finals for the maincompetition but it was aPetersfield player who won.

Fair play though, Daniel deserved it with a very mature andconsistent performance. Here he is being presented with theshield by League Treasurer Sue Hartwell.

The event was organised by Brian and Jaki Adsett and hostedby Fernhurst Table Tennis Club.

12 Fernhurst News June 2018

From the VicarageI had a routine eye test the other day. Theresults, I have to admit, came as a bit of asurprise. I didn’t realise quite how much myeyesight had deteriorated recently, although some signs were there – soreeyes, the occasional headache, that sort of thing By the way, in case any of youthink that means that I’m getting old, I’m not. I’m still 21. Just like all the restof you. Anyway, I now have to wear glasses all the time, instead of just forreading. And do you know what? I’m seeing things that I never saw before.Details. Everything is so much clearer. Marvellous. A whole new crystal-clearworld.

But, inevitably I suppose, there are some things that I see now that I’d rathernot notice after all. Many objects around me suddenly show somedeterioration as well. Flaws. Imperfections. Dirt. When everything is present-ed to you in more clarity you see things you don’t want to see as well as thingsyou do. Reality suddenly looks slightly less perfect. Oh dear. How do you dealwith that? Well, the fact is that we often turn a blind eye to such things. Wehave to live with imperfection – it’s a fact of life, whether we see it or not.

What do we see when we look at ourselves? The image I see when I look in themirror with my new glasses is now less perfect than it was, as well. That’s areality that I have to accept, and live with. And that’s just looking at thesurface. I can’t change the way I look on the outside. But do I turn a blind eyeto the things inside?

What does God see when he looks at me, I wonder? Well, with perfect vision hemust see me as I really am, both inside and out. That’s quite a scary thought. He must see me with more clarity than anyone – particularly all the faults andimperfections within me that are unseen by anyone else, me included.

But I think of those in my life who love me, warts and all. I think of those whoshow me acceptance and love in spite of the fact that I’m less than perfect –and who see my shortcomings more clearly than I do. And I think that God’slike that. Only much, much more so.

Anyway, I’m just off to collect a new sign for my study door. It says,

‘The Vicar will see you now’.

With every blessing,

Nick

And now from the pew …..Fernhurst is a very active village, with many clubs and societiesproviding opportunities to share interests and learn new skills etc. justread this magazine to see! Well that applies to St Margaret’s Churchtoo. Beyond the big festivals of Christmas and Easter many eventstake place throughout the year. For our recent Annual meeting 15groups submitted written reports on what they were doing to keep thebuilding running smoothly, provide music and a welcome for ourservices plus opportunities to learn more about our faith and just havefun together. The changes to the fabric of the church are now complete with thebenefits for all to appreciate; the lovely new space along the southaisle made a huge difference to Messy Easter and of course the newpew cushions…………ah!One of the reports was from a new group that began earlier this yearcalled PARCHE (Pastoral Action in Residential Care Homes for theElderly). The organisation was founded in Eastbourne 20 years agoand now has groups all over the country offering simple services toChristians in residential care. Jane Detrey is our area co-ordinator andshe has organised the training for the St Margaret’s team. RosemaryPark were very happy to welcome us and the first monthly servicewas held on the 28th February with the subject - new life. It was aprivilege to see the residents joining in the well known hymns(Morning has broken and All things bright and beautiful beingparticular favourites). With a short bible passage, a very simple talkand prayers, residents and staff were all able to enjoy this special timeof worship. The fellowship of St Margaret’s experiences all the joys and sorrows ofeveryday life and realise that an opportunity to meet and chat over acup of tea and some home made cakes could be just what the doctorordered. The Haven Café which opens in the Parish and CommunityRoom between 2.00 and 4.00 on the first Monday each month doesjust that with trained ‘listeners’ on hand for more personal ‘one toone’s.The formal Sunday services can often leave a lot of questionsunanswered which is why Study or House Groups are so important. StMargaret’s has two groups specifically for this; Penny and John Selfhost a bible study group at their home on the morning of the firstMonday of each month where Michael Short leads the discussions; Ianand Maureen Pavey host their discussion and study sessions on mostTuesday evenings. The Church of England calendar calls the period from Trinity Sunday,as described last month, until All Saints day in November as ‘OrdinaryTime’, but there are still special events for us to look forward to hereat St Margaret’s. On the 22nd June we have our summer MessyChurch when we will be discovering how Jesus chose His firstdisciples; and over the weekend of 21st to 22nd July we will celebrateSt Margaret of Antioch (after whom the church was named) at ourPatronal Festival.Hope you can join us! FERNHURST PRIMARY SCHOOL

We are delighted to announce that Unicef UK hasawarded Fernhurst Primary School their Silver RightsRespecting School Award.

Unicef is the world’s leading organisation working for children and their rights. The Rights Respecting Schools Award is granted to schools that showcommitment to promoting and realising children’s rights and encouragingadults, children and young people to respect the rights of others in school. TheSilver Award is given to schools that make excellent progress towardsembedding the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of theChild into its philosophy and curriculum. A Rights Respecting School is acommunity where children’s rights are learned, taught, practised, respected, protected and promoted. There are over 1000 schools across England, Scotland,Northern Ireland and Wales that have achieved Silver and over 400 schools thathave been awarded Gold, the next step up and highest accolade granted byUnicef.

We could not be prouder of the school and our community for achieving thisaward. Over the last year we have spent time embedding the UN Convention onthe Rights of the Child into our school’s ethos and values as well as planning, policies and our daily practices. The pupils and staff have fully embraced theefforts that have gone towards achieving this award and it is wonderful to seethe impact that putting the children’s rights at the heart of our school has had.Being a Rights Respecting School will go a long way to preparing our pupils wellin becoming informed and active citizens of the next generation to the benefitof their local community and the wider world.

Our work with Unicef continues, building on the strong foundations already inplace, we will be deepening our understanding of rights, rights respectingvalues and global citizenship and we are very excited about our onward journeyto achieving Gold.

Don't spell part backwards. It's a trap.

The bluebells have been stunning this year. What a glorious sightgreeted us at Tolt Coppice Farm, the woods were a haze ofshimmering blue. We had an excellent morning despite a couple ofshort sharp showers, during which we had to frantically cover ourwork. Bluebells are not the easiest things to paint, they appear at firstto be deceptively bright blue, but one soon realises that they areactually varying shades of purple and violet as well. That, coupled withdappled sunlight and bright green spring foliage, called for somesubtle painting techniques. As another opportunity arose and as the day dawned fine and sunny,it was decided to make a second trip to the bluebells. This meant thatour return visit to the Green in Fernhurst was happily put off!On June the 13th, we however will be back on the Green. This willmake interesting painting though as it will now be summer, so quite achange from our usual spring effort. Please meet there at 10.00am.Our second venue this month is still to be decided, and we will letmembers know, it will also be on our website.

Pavilion 2022 updateWhile local fundraising has been going great guns over the last few months, the Trusteeshave to announce one big set-back. The lion’s share of the £1m budget has to come frombig, institutional grants and, unfortunately, the Football Foundation has said no. JohnMitchell, chairman of Pavilion 2022, says “they told us they considered the currentpavilion to be "adequate". We, of course, disagree and are still lobbying the othersporting foundations along with charitable trusts and councils. Even if it was “adequate”it is not what Fernhurst deserves or needs.”“We also have a sense from wider conversations that our village is being unfairly‘marked down’ because it is perceived as very prosperous. As with most villages, this isnot the case but it certainly seems to be the misconception of some who live in towns.”Trustees are delighted with the local support and a real community sense of purpose.John says “The arguments for Pavilion 2022 remain valid. Most people accept we can’tstruggle on with the current building. Local pledges and donations now amount to£145,000, which is fantastic.”‘Plan B’ is now being examined which would be a single storey building with a slightlyenlarged footprint. It means extending onto the two previous extensions to give enoughchanging rooms for all the sports. The target would become £500,000.“It’s disappointing”, continues John. “A beautiful, new building with balconies and moresocial areas was the ideal but we will have to cut our cloth. I now know from the supportthat if Fernhurst has to do this on its own, it can. The Football Foundation decision is abig setback but we are not even at half-time yet. The arguments in favour of Pavilion2022 are stronger than ever and we remain determined to build for the future.”A ‘Legends’ cricket match, a black tie ball and a major running event are all in the mixfor fundraising. A rewards scheme for pledges and donations can be found on thewebsite: we hope to have hundreds of engraved bricks in the entry wall or path.

Please do get involved with fundraising and ideas and follow our progressat pavilion2022.org.uk :: on Facebook we are @FernPav2022 and onTwitter @Pavilion2022

THE GOOD COMPANIONSOur Ploughman’s Lunch was well attended and, as usual, the home-made soupwent down extremely well along with our plateful of ham, cheese and salad. Thiswas all followed by tea and coffee and lots of chit-chat. We help to fundourselves by our two lunches each year, with other fund-raisers from time to timesuch as a Bring and Buy an d also our raffles. We are well supported by thevillage and are very grateful for the donations we receive from time to time. Wealso have a good relationship with the Haslemere Stroke Club, whom we invite totea and an entertainment twice a year, usually musical. There again, we are verythankful for the people who give us their time, energy and talent to support us inthis.

Music, in fact, has a great part to play in our activities. We have recently hadanother lovely recital from Margaret Watson on her harp. She showed us howthe harp is constructed and demonstrated the complex interaction of her fingerson the strings (colour-coded) and her feet on the many pedals (each pedal hasthree positions). It looked far, far worse than patting your head while rubbingyour tummy in circles. Margaret played entirely from memory, in her glitteringtheatrical dress and many rings (one of which she lost outside the Hall - if foundplease let me know. It features a miniature silver harp).

Our first meeting in June: PLEASE NOTE: The date has been changed and themeeting will now be on June 20th. This will be a visit for tea to Lower HouseFarm, by kind invitation of Mr. and Mrs. Braithwaite. Lifts are offered to those whocannot walk there. A car will wait outside Russet Court at 2.00 p.m. foranyone who needs a lift. Our second meeting will be on June 27th in the Hall, when Fernhurst School children will come to sing and play to us. We welcomeany parents or other visitors to come and hear them with us.

Well……the nightingales have been back in our area for some time - we firstheard them again on April 18th. Cuckoos are few and far between as I write, though people have heard them in the distance and so far there is no sign of theswifts. But when you read this, we hope they will have arrived back to confirm usin our view that Fernhurst is a brilliant place to live!

If you want further details about us or our programme please look on our webpage or phone Rosemary on 653266 or me on 653059.

Fernhurst Fledglings is a drop in session for parents and carersof babies and toddlers. It runs every Wednesday, term timeonly, in Oscars at Fernhurst Primary School from 9:00am till11:30am. Cost is £2 per family, during our session we havecraft activities, singing, and healthy snacks for children.

The children have been having a delightful time in thepre-school garden lately, with the warm sunshine it hasbeen enchanting!

The older children have been visiting the big schoolplayground, eating their lunch in the primary school andsome have even had the hot lunches all in preparation fortheir transition in September. After half term they areable to explore the Reception class at the primary schooland talk/play with the teaching staff and familiarisethemselves with the surroundings.

Our annual summer outing will be at West Wittering beach this year. As usualwe shall be inviting the older children on this exciting day out. It’s a greatchance for the children moving on to school to bond before their transition andcelebrate their time with their friends at Fernhurst Pre-school. Lets hope it islovely and sunny and we can enjoy a paddle in the water and indulge in an icecream.

The children had the experience ofhandling animals from Zoolab thatvisited us recently, this included a giantsnail, an enormous millipede, a mouse,a corn snake, a frog and a lizard. Thechildren loved it and they were able tointeract and move and groove just likethe animals.

Thanks to the fundraising efforts of theparents and community we have beenable to purchase new features in thegarden and we are going to expand ourgarden toys further with the moneyraised.

Sudan Church AssociationI have just received the Spring copy of the Sudan Church Review. This is grimreading but with a few bright spots. Since the inauguration of South Sudan, which seceded from the north five years ago there are now over one millionrefugees. This largely springs from the disagreement within the South Sudangovernment. People are being killed and cattle stolen by those whose job it is toprotect them. The population of whole Dioceses have fled to Uganda to escapethe violence. When South Sudan was founded, the President was a Dinka and theVice President a Nuer. All went well for about two years, but then the Nuer VicePresident rebelled and violence started off all over again. The economy of thecountry has collapsed, making it harder for families to find daily food, let alonethe other necessities of life. One of the stabilising features are the churches, particularly the Anglican and Roman Catholics whose Archbishops have beenworking together. One of the difficulties of sending funds to the Dioceses from the SCA, but withthe help of an organisation called ACROSS, the SCA has able to send £15,000 tothe church leaders. On the brighter side, the Archbishop of Canterbury has been in Khartoum tofound the new, 39th Province of the (northern) Sudan. Is there anything we can do? Yes, keep those postcards rolling in. 50,000postcards were donated in 2017, raising £2,940, the total sum since January 1988as been a remarkable £212,189, an average of £7,073 per year over the last 30years. (Don't try to remove the stamps.)There is a collecting box at the back of St. Peter’s and I hope in St Paul’s andSt.Margaret’s as well. I will check. If anyone can help in checking the contentsonce a month, please let me know.Michael Tibbs (643120 or [email protected])
