Were not into playing games; there are reasons behind our rituals. It is therefore puzzling that the liturgy for the High Holyday season includes repeated requests for G-d to recall the ‘13 Attributes of Mercyso that He may forgive us. If the whole season of the month of Elul, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is dedicated to growth and change, why are we looking for shortcuts? How do we celebrate growth while asking for mercy? Wouldnt it be better to spend the whole time soul-searching and making resolutions for the future? Yet the primary focus of our prayer seems to be on escaping responsibility for our deeds! Additionally, if G-d has these 13 Attributes, why must we remindHim of it? Is He only merciful if we say this prayer?! What exactly are we trying to accomplish? RMoshe Cordovero (d. 1570) in his classic Torah commentary Tomer Devorahexplains that although the 13 Attributes arouse Divine mercy, their recitation alone is not enough. This is no magic formula; rather, we need to make sure that in action, our own lifestyles reflect these attributes as well. For example, the Talmud says that if we are patient with others, then G-d will be patient with us. We can only ask that G-d employ all these attributes if we are applying them in our own relationships. Every time we recite this prayer, we should be challenging ourselves to emulate His attributes. Yom Kippur Reflections: The 13 Attributes of Mercy By Rabbi Y Binstock For a thinking Jew, what counts in life is meaning and substance, not the illogical or the quick fix. We’re not into playing games; there are reasons behind our rituals. It is therefore puzzling that the liturgy for the High Holyday season includes repeated requests for G-d to recall the ‘13 Attributes of Mercy’ so that He may forgive us. If the whole season of the month of Elul, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is dedicated to growth and change, why are we looking for shortcuts? How do we celebrate growth while asking for mercy?
