Presidents' Message

Shirley May Byrnes, Co-President

The April 15 program on China was presented by Jim Sullivan and Jim Fletcher. It was informative, and the pictures were worth more than a thousand words. Thank you gentlemen. The officers for 2015-16 were elected at the business meeting following the program. Congratulations to all of them. The branch will be represented by Shirley May Byrnes, Patty Harkin, and Jeanne Hebeisen at the AAUW-IL convention in Bloomington on May 1-2. The state convention provides good information to bring back to the branch, as well as providing a great opportunity to learn what other branches are doing in Illinois. Please join us at the branch's 95th annual meeting on May 20 at the Elgin Country Club. Send a check payable to Elgin Area AAUW for $33 with your meal selection to Julie Ford. Members who pay their dues by May 20 will be eligible for a free national membership.

Our spring garage sale is scheduled for May 21-23 with drop off on the 20th prior to the annual meeting. We hope you have been collecting items

for this fundraiser. Feel free to price your items prior to dropping them off. Help is needed at the sale itself, particularly for the morning set up and afternoon closing time.

2015-2016 Programs From Patty Harkin and Gareth Sitz

We are eagerly looking forward to planning next year’s programs and are seeking input from branch members. If you have any ideas about the types of programs you would enjoy, please drop us an e-mail ([email protected] or [email protected]) with your thoughts. Also, if you know a specific presenter or organization you think would suit our branch’s interests, please send us their contact information with a brief description of what that program would be. We will be having our first official planning meeting towards the end of May, so please respond with your ideas prior to May 15. Thank you in advance.

Membership Matters From Becky Olson March 17 began the new date to begin collecting for FY16. Eleven members paid their dues for FY16 at our last meeting. And we gained a new member, Martha Brady. New member contact info appears also in this newsletter.. E-applications with branch letters are sent when referrals are made by our members.. At our May meting we will be adding new members, too. Linda Rock, originally an MAL (Members At Large) with only the national AAUW and no branch affiliation will become a member at our May meeting.

As in the past, at our May Annual Meeting we will again be collecting dues. Members who pay their dues before or on that date will be eligible for a drawing for a free national membership. That member will still need to pay state dues ($10) and branch dues ($13) as the national membership is $49.00 of the $72.00. In the meantime, please send dues to Joan Hayashida, Membership Treasurer, 175 Pauline Drive, Elgin, IL 60123. There will be a chart at the meeting so that we can record check numbers and dates and amounts paid/due. By June 30th each year, monies are sent appropriately to national, state and local branch based on BDR (Branch Dues Record) and ADR (Additional Dues Record) forms. If you have changes in address, phone, email or cell phone, please let us know at that time so that the branch yearbook will be accurate. Are you iterested in serving on the membership committee for the year 2015-2016? Please let Rosemary Dyson or Fay Kitchin know. They will be setting up meetings after 5/19/2015. There is so much information available to members on the national website. Read about NCCWSL (National Conference for College Women Student Leaders), YWTF (Young Women’s Task Force), scholarships, the coming national convention in San Diego, June 2015. Become a two-minute activist & contact legislators on women’s issues. Make your voice heard to effect change!

Garage Sale From Jan Jones

May 20-23,

2015 at Jean Jederman’s home – Corner of Wing and Worth

Educational Opportunities is the beneficiary of sale

Our Spring Garage Sale is coming SOON! It's time to start collecting all those treasures that no longer need a spot at your house. Think how nice it will feel – and look – to get rid of some of those things you no longer use – from your closets, drawers, kitchen or garage. Books are usually in demand at our sale. Perennials from your garden are great sellers – and should be easy to divide at this time of the year. I have extra pots if you need them. Please label plants as not all of us are good at recognizing the many varieties usually donated. It helps to create sales when our goods are clean and shiny. Price any items that you have an idea of the value we should receive. Any tables or sawhorses and doors/boards you have that will help display our goods should be dropped off on Wednesday, if at all possible. Three cars, vans or trucks are needed 5-20 at

12:30 to bring stored treasures from Bonnie Hill's

garage to Jean Jederman's garage

Drop off time is Wednesday, May 20 from 1:30 –

4:30 pm

Thursday, May 21 is sorting and pricing from 9

am – 5 pm

Friday, May 22 is more sorting, pricing and

selling from 9 – 5 pm

Saturday, May 23 is selling and packing up -

from 9 – 2 pm

(The beginning and end of each shift are very

important to get our stuff out and then to put it

away at the end of the day.)

Please call – or e-mail - Jan Jones or Katherine

Jablonowski to let us know what times will work

for you to volunteer for this HUGE undertaking.

Looking forward to warm, sunny weather, the

chance to socialize with other volunteers, and

make LOTS of money for EO.

Reel Woman/Real Women From Barbara Evans Tues., May 26: Still Alice (2014) PG-13 Starring Julianne Moore with Alec Baldwin, Kate Bosworth and Kristen Stewart Based on a novel by neuroscientist Lisa Genova, this is a film about a successful linguistics professor who, at age 50, is diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's disease. While her busy husband—"a solid Alex Baldwin, for once not a jerk," observed one critic—and her three adult children must learn to cope with Alice's increasing dysfunction, the focus is on Alice and, as she says, her "struggle to stay a part of things." That Moore won the Best Actress Oscar in 2015 for her role as Alice is not surprising, for as critic Brad Keefe observed, her "performance is a thing to behold. . . .She has a nuance in depicting the inner workings of an intelligent woman whose mind is failing her. It's a terrifying prospect, and she captures every stage." And this includes the times of normality. As for why any would want to watch such a film, Moore herself answered that question in an interview. Explaining that dementia is still a hush-hush disease, she said that "We have to look at the

whole of life's journey," which includes an awareness of how people with dementia live. "It

makes you appreciate what you have," Moore observed.

Note: This is the film group that our branch co-

sponsors with Gail Borden Library, which is where

the films are shown. Open to the public at no

charge, show time is 6 pm; discussion follows.

Food/drink may be brought into whichever room

we're assigned for the evening.
