We are all together in a place we have never been before. We are in the Coronavirus Pandemic. Washing our hands, wearing a mask, no hugging, staying 6 feet away from each other is now the new norm. Many of us are worried. We are scared. A Prayer for a Pandemic came through Facebook the other day that helped me put all of this into perspective. I would like to share it with you. May we who are merely inconvenienced remember those whose lives are at stake. May we who have no risk factors remember those most vulnerable. May we who have the luxury of working from home remember those who must choose between preserving their health or making their rent. May we who have the flexibility to care for our children when their schools close remember those who have no options. May we who have to cancel our trips remember those that have no safe place to go. May we who are losing our margin money in the tumult of the economic market remember those who have no margin at all. May we who settle in for a quarantine at home remember those who have no home. As fear grips our country let us choose love. During this time when we cannot physically wrap our arms around each other let us yet find ways to be the loving embrace of God to our neigh- bors. Amen United Methodist Women keep safe, keep praying, choose love, be the loving embrace of God and keep our eyes on Jesus. We will get through this together. We have work to do. LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE….IGNITED FOR JUSTICE

Madelyn’s Message

As I sit down to write my president’s article for Timely Reflections, I looked over at my calendar. It was full of so many commitments several weeks ago. Now I stare at a calendar full of cancelations with only one appointment to my chiropractor left in the month. May we who are merely inconvenienced

remember those whose lives are at stake. May we who have no risk factors

remember those most vulnerable. May we who have the luxury of working from home

remember those who must choose between preserving their health or making their rent.

May we who have the flexibility to care for our children when their schools close

remember those who have no options. May we who have to cancel our trips

remember those that have no safe place to go. May we who are losing our margin money in the tumult of the economic market

remember those who have no margin at all. May we who settle in for a quarantine at home

remember those who have no home. As fear grips our country

let us choose love. During this time when we cannot physically wrap our arms around each other

let us yet find ways to be the loving embrace of God to our neigh-bors. Amen United Methodist Women keep safe, keep praying, choose love, be the loving embrace of God and keep our eyes on Jesus. We will get through this together. We have work to do. This is a global issue and we are a global organization that is organized to help. WASH THOSE HANDS! When Others Shuddered Eight Women Who Refused to Give Up

by Jamie Janosz When Others Shuddered is the story of eight women. They are Fanny Crosby, Mary McLeod Bethune, Nettie McCor-

mick, Sarah Dunn Clarke, Emma Dryer, Virginia Asher, Evangeline Booth, and Amanda Berry Smith. These women had many accomplishments even though many of them came from humble beginnings. Fanny Crosby wrote many of our beloved hymns even though she was blinded as a child. Emma Dryer joined with DL Moody and founded The Chicago Evangelization Soci-ety. This eventually became the Moody Bible Institute. Evangeline Booth’s family founded the Salvation army and under her leadership it became the national organ-ization that we know today. Amanda Smith and Mary McLeod Bethune were both black women who over-came slavery and poverty to improve the lives of black women in the United State and Africa. In 1920 Mary helped 460 women register to vote despite intimidation by the KKK. Sue McGovney [email protected]

SOCIAL ACTION EDUCATION & INTERPRETATION

United Methodist Women are continuing to explore new ways to engage current and po-tential members. You are invited to take a sur-vey. This new event is called Soul Care re-treats. What is Soul Care? 1 Thessalonians 5:23. Now may the God of peace Himself sanc-tify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Soul Care is defined as the support and restoration of the wellbeing of persons in their totality (mind, body & spirit) with particular con-cern for the inner life. The goal of Soul Care is to foster spiritual growth that consists of 4 ele-ments: Healing, Sustaining, Reconciling & Guiding. I took the survey and found that I may be chosen to attend one of these retreats. I could not find a way for my readers to connect to this. If interested please go to the united-methodistwomen.org web site and explore. Or give me a call at my number listed below. Khia Shaw, Director of Membership & Engagement is leading this project.

The second project I want to address is to ask you to support a national bill in the House of Representatives. This is part of the program to dismantle the School-to-Prison Pipeline. UMW supports the Ending Punitive, Unfair, School-Based Harm that is Overt and Unresponsive to Trauma (PUSHOUT) Act of 2019, bill HR5325, and encourages members to contact their representatives to let them know they should support the passage of the bill and support the equitable treatment of chil-dren of color in our schools. of strength and solace for you at this very special time.

My wish and best hope is that you take care of yourself and those close to you,

follow the guidelines and recommendations generated by healthcare providers, and that God’s love and comfort continues to be a source of strength and solace for you at this very special time. Linda Hansen, Inland Missional District E & I Coordinator and Social Action Coordinator 208-620-0158 e-mail: [email protected]

MEMBERSHIP NURTURE and

OUTREACH As I write this article the deadline is fast approaching for completion of the 2019 cen-sus by all of our local units. I thank all who have done so, 13 of 15 units with promises of the remaining 2. This is a yearly task, essen-tial in order for National United Methodist Women to ensure each of our local units thrive. I would suggest that all presidents place the new census on their January agenda and make completion a priority. With the unprecedented health crisis currently affecting all of us in the Pacific North-west Conference I urge United Methodist Women to reach out to members who look for-ward to the fellowship of regular meetings and church-related events. Please take special care to “nurture” especially those who are homebound, those in care facilities, those ex-periencing difficult life circumstances. In per-son visits may not be possible but a phone call and caring notes can be so welcome and a needed day brightener. Until we can share hugs and smiles again, let’s share our love and care with our sisters in Christ through our voices and written remembrances.

Coordinator [email protected]
