Time to Sign up For Band, Choir, & Orchestra! Registration for Band, Choir, & Orchestra is now open for current 5th graders who will attend Mt. Baker in the Fall of 2021. Students who play instruments often earn higher grades in other classes, attend school more regularly, score higher on academic assessments & have a TON of fun in an active group setting.
Students must have an instrument for band or orchestra. Instruments may be purchased or rented from ANY music store. Mt. Baker does own a few instruments that can be loaned out to students. Please arrange to borrow an instrument with Mrs. Wharton (orchestra) and Mr. Paustian (band). Please avoid purchasing instruments from any store that is not a music store such as Costco or Walmart.
Registration forms can be found on the 5th Grade Music Google Classroom. Registration will not close, but is preferred at your soonest convenience.

La inscripción para banda, coro y orquesta ya está abierta para los estudiantes de quinto grado que asistirán a Mt. Baker en el otoño de 2021. Familias Ilalko, Nos acercamos a esa época del año en la que nor-malmente empezamos a buscar libros de la bibli-oteca que faltan y multas impagas. Muchos de nuestros estudiantes todavía tienen libros de la biblioteca prestados del año escolar 2019-2020 que, en un año normal, se convertirían en multas en las cuentas de los estudiantes. Entendemos que muchas de nuestras familias lucharon de una for-ma u otra durante la pandemia. Cuando hicimos la transición inesperadamente a la escuela en línea en marzo de 2020, devolver los libros de su bibliote-ca probablemente no era una prioridad y lo enten-demos totalmente. Después de pensarlo mucho, hemos decidido perdonar todas las multas por libros perdidos del año escolar 2019-2020. Dependemos de las familias para que devuelvan los libros y paguen las multas para que podamos gastar ese dinero en libros nuevos que mantengan nuestra biblioteca actualizada y que nuestros niños estén entusiasmados con la lectura. Se necesitarán muchos años de fondos pre-supuestados para compensar lo que hemos perdido. Entonces, mientras planeamos eliminar las multas del año escolar pasado, le pedimos que si encuen-tra esos libros los devuelva, o si está en condi-ciones de pagar esas multas que se comunique con nosotros. En una nota similar, si su familia está interesada en ayudar a nuestra biblioteca a recuperarse de esta pérdida, tenemos una lista de deseos de Am-azon que se envía directamente a la escuela. ❤
Si ha tomado libros prestados utilizando nues-tro formulario de salida remota este año esco-lar (2020-2021), le pedimos que devuelva esos libros antes del 4 de junio. La pérdida de libros de nuestro programa de salida remota se con-vertirá en multas al final del año escolar.

Ilalko Families, We are nearing that time of year when we typi-cally start hunting down missing library books and unpaid fines. Many of our students still have library books checked out from the 2019-2020 school year which, in a normal year, would be-come fines on the students’ accounts. We under-stand that many of our families struggled in one way or another throughout the pandemic. When we unexpectedly transitioned to online school back in March of 2020 returning your library books probably wasn’t a high priority and we to-tally get that. After a lot of thought, we have decided to forgive all fines for missing books from the 2019-2020 school year. We will still be send-ing missing books slips home in the next pick-up day bag or home with your hybrid students just so you are informed about what was missing, but we are not pursuing payment for those missing books. This decision is not without consequences. Our Ilalko library is on a very limited budget. We rely on families to return books and pay fines so that we are able to spend that money on new books that keep our library current and our kids excit-ed about reading. It will take many years of budgeted funds to make up for what we have lost. So while we are planning on deleting the fines from last school year, we ask that if you do find those books that you return them, or if you are in the position to pay those fines that you reach out to us. On a similar note, if your family is interested in helping our library recover from this loss, we do have an Amazon wish list that ships directly to the school. ❤
If you have borrowed books using our remote check-out form this school year (2020-2021) we are asking that you return those books by June 4th. Missing books from our remote check-out program WILL become fines at the end of the school year.

The Ilalko Library is hosting a Scholastic Drive-Through Book Fair!
This event is a fundraiser! We earn 25% of the sale profit to buy books for our library.
Tuesday, May 25th 10:15-1:15
Keeping your family safe is our priority. That’s why we’re taking extra precautions to host a safe, socially distanced, drive-through fair. Shop the fair in four easy steps:
1. Choose the books you would like to purchase from THIS SCHOLASTIC FLYER. You can buy Book Fair Value Packs
AND/OR
Shop from this list of individual titles also available at the fair.
2. Attend the Drive-Through event. Follow the signs and stay in your car. When a Book Fair vol-unteer comes to your window, let them know which books/book packs from the flyer you would like to purchase. 3. Pay with a debit or credit card or set up a Scholastic eWallet. (Warning: You cannot be re-funded excess money from your eWallet account, so do not put in more than you expect to spend.) We will not be accepting cash.
4. Drive away with your new books feeling awesome because you supported our Ilalko Library by shopping at our book fair.
If you cannot make it to the drive-through event, or you want to shop from a MUCH bigger selection, we are also hosting an Online Scholastic Book Fair from May 20th to June 2nd. If you order online from the link above during that window your books will ship directly to your home.

5th Grade Graduation
Congratulations to our 5th graders! You will be moving on to middle school and we
want to recognize that accomplishment. We will be doing a drive-thru graduation
this year on Monday, June 21st. Please put this on your calendar.

Pacific Marine Research Lessons
Our 4th grade classrooms were awarded a scholarship by Pacific Marine Research to attend virtual marine science lessons on June 22 and 23. Lesson 1 will show the abundance of plankton in the Puget Sound and record what kind of plankton we are seeing this time of year. Lesson 2 will show a Live Dive using an ROV, Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicle, to show the life below the surface of the Puget Sound and communicate with the SCUBA divers. Have a wonderful time 4th grad-ers!
