PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

It has been a very busy Semester 1, with students participating in a wide range of learning activities and extra curricula programs. I congratulate students for their efforts and thank staff for their dedication and commitment in providing so many opportunities for our students. This week our Year 12 students ‘sat the GAT’. Unit 3 and 4 students were well prepared for this important General Achievement Test, have practiced each component, and received feedback to better their performance. This GAT is an important component of statistical moderation at Year 12 and can influence student grades. Year 10 and Year 11 examinations have already been held with results being compiled for reports. Teachers will review the examination results with students before the end of term so that students can receive valuable feedback on their performance in terms of the subject and examination practices. It is essential that all students are able to reflect on their performance and improve for the future. Reporting is a key component of our feedback to students and to parents. Reports are currently being finalised and will be available on line for parents on Wednesday the 26th of June. In 2019, these reports are on Compass for parents and students to access. If you wish to have a hard copy of your report could you please contact the office to arrange this. Assessment feedback and reports provide invaluable information for students and parents regarding strengths, improvement areas and strategies for students to improve their results. Please make sure that you read these carefully and communicate with your child’s teachers about their contents. The Year 9 students have been involved in the BRICKS program this week. Thanks to Mr Mark Graesser for organising this. The BRICKS program is focussed on building the resilience and confidence of students in year 9. The feedback from the students has been extremely positive so far. Prep tours and transitions days are well under way and for any Kindergarten parents we will be holding more tours on the 19th and 20th of June in the morning. If parents wish to attend these I ask that you contact the front office to book in. A reminder for Grade 6 students and parents to return their 2020 Year 7 application for enrolment form to the front office. This needs to be done as soon as possible to allow for planning around classes and teachers for next year. The last day of Term is Friday the 28th of June and we will finishes at 2.30 on this day. Eisteddfod Congratulations to all 25 Year 5-6 students who chose to compete at the Poetry Eisteddfod on Wednesday. You are all to be commended for giving it a go. At this time, I don’t have any results, but will post them on Compass to let everyone know. Thanks to the parents for supporting their children on the day. Earth Education Excursion Mrs McMeel’s class had a great time visiting the Earth Education program in Ballarat on Monday. Students got to fossil hunt for dinosaurs. I bet Mrs Moriarty and Mrs Hawkins’ classes are looking forward to their trip on Monday.

Art Showcase On the last day of term, Friday 28th June, all students across P-6 will perform a musical item and some Year 5-6s will present short skits, to showcase the learning undertaken in Music and Drama this semester. Students who have been studying Japanese will also perform. To celebrate the masterpieces in Art, each student will have at least one Art piece on display. The Showcase will start at 12 noon and run for approximately one-and-a-half hours. Parents are invited to attend. The plan is to hold the event in the school hall, although there will be limited seating. The event will be low key, with no costumes or props. It is an opportunity for the students to celebrate their learning and perform in front of larger audiences. Following the Showcase, parents are welcome to take their children home, as the school day finishes at 2:30pm. Cyber bullying and appropriate use of Technology A growing concern amongst our Year 4-6 students is the inappropriate access to apps, games and Internet websites. Some students have reported being bullied and whilst much of this is happening outside of school hours, we all must take action. In the newsletter and on Compass, I have sent out fact sheets from two sources around Cyber safety. Please check your child’s device TODAY and remove any apps that you have not given permission for. It is a timely reminder that most Apps have an age limit of 13 years and above. If you need ICT support, please call Terry, he is very happy to help. As part of appropriate technology use at school, iPads are not to come to school with the sim-cards installed. This allows students to access sites that have not been department approved. If you want further information with regards to Cyber Safety, please refer to the following link https://esafety.gov.au

Communication The School’s policy with regards to communication with your P-6 child whilst at school, is to contact the office. We do not encourage the use of messenger or other such sources, including phones. Phones for after school use, must be logged into the Office. Wet Weather pick-up spot On wet weather afternoons, students waiting to be picked-up after school will be inside the Junior School 3 building (red-brick building). For students who walk to dance or elsewhere, please have them wear coats and maybe supply an umbrella. Coming up: Monday 17th June: Earth Ed for classes 3-4A and 3-4B Wednesday 19th June: Cultural performance on Japanese Nexus Arts performance titled: ‘Omusubi Kororin’ – Rice ball Tumble tumbling! Tuesday 25th June: Year 5-6 excursion to Mount Noorat and Mount Leura Thursday 27th June: NAIDOC week – P-12 Assembly Friday 28th June – ARTS SHOWCASE from 12noon, with an early School finish at 2:30pm. Last week we had a number of students attend the Warrnambool Speech Eisteddfod. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to extend their English skills. Students presented their four to five minute speeches about a range of topics, on stage, as part of the competition. We want to congratulate these amazing young people for pushing themselves out of their comfort zone and representing our school so admirably! Well done, Georgina Van Es (Year 7), Caitlin Ferrier (Year 8), Matisse Fitzpatrick (Year 8), Olive Andrews (Year 8), Mitchell Wallace (Year 9), Poppy Haugh (Year 9), Tarsha Duro (Year 9), Jasmine McKenzie (Year 9), Tzofia Lasarow (Year 10) and Emily Morden (Year 10). Overall, we had a number of placegetters: Jasmine McKenzie and Matisse Fitzpatrick placed 2nd, Mitchell Wallace placed 3rd and Olive Andrews received an honourable mention. Thank you to the parents for all your support and transport. Melissa McKenzie English Domain Leader

Invasive pests and food security in a changing world

The Year 9/10 Geography – Food for Thought elective students

have been investigating what factors lead to food insecurity. To

examine how threats from non-native plants, animals and insects

affect our food security we invited Nerida Evans, a District Vet

with the Department of Agriculture, and Geoff Rollinson, the

Landcare Coordinator of Heytesbury and District Landcare

Network to address the class. Nerida described her career path

and the role of a Department Vet in protecting against disease

outbreaks, controlling invasive animals and their impact on the

Australian environment and agriculture. Geoff defined

smothering weeds and cited examples of these in our region such

as Wandering Trad, Blue Periwinkle and Blackberries and the way

they are controlled. He also introduced students to the Keeping

Carbon on the Farm pilot project that includes a suite of activities

that farmers can undertake to reduce their greenhouse gas

emissions and better prepare for climate change. We will look

forward to learning about this in future classes.

TAP into The Corner Store Our Year 9/10 Business elective students dodged showers today to visit The Corner Store Timboon where they learnt about the deli enterprise from owner, Emma Pope. Emma outlined her vision for the Store and how she isolated gaps in local foodie businesses based on what she had tried herself, or had researched in social media trends and magazines like the Gourmet Traveler. That point of difference was also important in purchasing goods for the store whether it be Jane Dough bread or glassware for gifts. She explained that there is no formula for retail in a rural regions but that she sourced seasonal vegetables and used this in cyclical soups, salads or curries as well as the other deli goods. Emma described the role of social media in promoting The Corner Store as it is not on a major thoroughfare and the importance of exposure in groups or marketing like Great Ocean Road (GOR) Tourism and the RACV magazine. Whilst running your own business can be hard work and stressful at times, Emma indicated that she really enjoys it and appreciates contributing to the Timboon experience for locals and tourists. Thank you for your candour and insights for our budding business people Emma!
