PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome back to Term 4! I hope all families have had a chance to spend some time together over the break and enjoy the opportunity to undertake new adventures, re-visit old hobbies, play together or just rest up and relax. There are sure to have been many VCE students who have spent the break studying and on behalf of the entire school community I wish them well as they embark on their final weeks of classes, study and exams. As I have said to the students at assembly this week, we know that they are not their ATAR. So much more goes into who they are as citizens and people. I understand the importance of the ATAR and the goals students have set themselves are part of the journey they will undertake as part of the VCE. I would just like students to keep in mind that if they don’t get the score they had hoped, there will be other pathways into their chosen field. We will celebrate the achievements of all of our students, regardless of numbers and we are just thrilled be part of the journey with them as they finish school this term. It is with pleasure that I provide an update on the building refurbishments as the term begins. Our Woodwork facility is up and running with all electrical work completed, dust extraction connected and safety switches installed. I thank the community for their patience with this as it was delayed due to the availability of contractors to complete the works. In big news: the three refurbished buildings are almost finished and we are preparing for occupancy. The canteen will be running next week and it is looking great. The whole building has come up very well. School Council will tour the refurbished area this evening and it is hoped that parents can come and have a look from next week. Primary students have been on tours with their teachers and have been very positive about what they have seen. We will begin to move furniture and resources into the buildings over the coming weeks and students will begin classes in the new learning communities in 2019. In staffing news we have this week welcomed Ms Daisy Green who will be replacing Lisa Kensit for Term 4. Daisy has joined the secondary English team. We are currently in the process of shortlisting and interviewing for the student wellbeing position that has been created by Mark Chapman’s leaving. I hope to announce this position shortly. It is looking like a very busy and exciting term ahead, so I look forward to sharing the events with you as we work together to continue to create great learning opportunities for our students at Timboon P-12 School. Buildings Update

As you can see from our front page, the excitement is building for our opportunity to move in. At this stage, we are waiting for the certificate of occupancy and some final touch up of paint to be done. New furniture has been ordered and will be here by the end of the year. It is planned that we will start the formal moving of classrooms during weeks 9 -11 (starting December 3rd). Thanks to (left to right) Thomas Gaut, Jack Plozza, Ruby Haugh and Kyla Groves for posing for the cover photo.

2019 Structures and Planning

As usual, planning is happening behind the scenes in regards to class structures and staffing for next year. Nothing has been started yet, as we are waiting on staffing to be confirmed. Hopefully we will have this finalised early next week. Following this, I will put out a call for parent requests. I have great trust in our staff to be make the best decisions in regards to your child’s experience and education and they need time to structure 2019, so class lists will not be released till very late in the term. Like last year, I will make all attempts to be transparent as possible. Please ring or email me, [email protected], if you have any questions or concerns.

Bus notes

Just a reminder that if you have a bus note from last term that covers your child on a weekly basis, please ensure a new one is given to the office to confirm this arrangement still occurs.

Sun Smart

Reminder that the school wide-brimmed hat is compulsory for Term 4 outside play, sport and PE classes. Hats can be purchased from Lowes and should be clearly named.

Camps

Term 4 is a very exciting time for our students as they prepare for the Year 3/4 and Yr 5/6 annual camp and the P-2 excursion. Notes have gone home in regards to these camps this week. Please remember to ring the office and speak to Nikki if you wish to make a payment plan or need support. The P-2 excursion permission notes will come out next week, with the excursion planned for Friday 2nd November.

Swimming Program

The Prep students will have two hours of water safety education, one hour per day, on Thursday 8th and 15th November. We will be travelling to Cobden, where we have access to the Rodney Grove Aquatic Centre, heated pool. The school will provide instructors for each session, and parent volunteers are welcome to help with the changing and supervision of students outside the pool. Permission forms will go out next week. A payment of $10 per session is required, non-refundable, to help cover the cost of the program (that is $20 for the two days). Please speak to Natasha or Maddie if you are available to help or contact Caroline Costelloe as the program coordinator.

Initiative from 7/8 Commerce Elective Global Village

MobileMuster is a free mobile phone recycling program for everyone. MobileMuster’s recycling process recovers 99% of materials in a mobile phone. Australia has more old phones stored away than there are people in the country – that equates to two in every household, and that figure is rising. By 2028, Mobile Muster predicts that Australians will be holding onto nearly 30 million old mobile phones. Simply hand in your old mobiles and accessories to the box located in the school office or in the new secondary building. Remember to remove any data that you would like to keep before you recycle. All of the mobile phones collected will be resposibly recycled by the government-accredited MobileMuster program. The Year 7/8 Commerce Elective Global Village have been looking at waste and recycling. As a result of what we have learnt the class has decided to join up with MobileMuster.

Diabolical diseases Once again the Year 9 Science unit on body systems was brought to life by local vet, Zoe Vogels from The Vet Group, who spoke to both classes about calf disease types, causes, effects, treatment and the prevention of diseases and mastitis causes and treatment. Zoe provided lots of examples of how diseases can present, be transferred, and treated and used her brilliant cartoons to add to her presentation about the way diseases work in animals and humans. Thanks Zoe! Flannie Day! A flood of flannies greeted visitors to Timboon P-12 School as students and teachers flaunted their flannies as a TAP drought awareness event and fundraiser for farmers impacted by the drought. A BBQ lunch was provided by Landmark Timboon with thanks to James O’Brien, Davo, Cheryl, parents and helpers who cooked the sausages in bread that students readily purchased to raise funds. The Timboon Lions Club ran a Coins for Kids activity with Timboon P-12’s share of monies raised being directed to Aussie Helpers for drought relief. As well as learning about the

impact of the drought on communities across Australia our Prep-Year 2 students celebrated all things rural with bush dancing! Students clad in flannie shirts were also entertained with music during the lunchbreak by our talented musicians. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this worthy cause with over $900 raised to support Aussie farmers.

Beneath our feet

As part of their Geology and Science studies the Year 3/4 students have investigated “Beneath our feet” which examines how soils are formed and the land profiles in our region. Nerissa Lovric (Department Economic Development, Jobs, Transport & Resources) described the structure of the soil particles and students could identify different agricultural areas across the state based on land types. Students examined the Heytesbury and District Landcare core soil samples and learnt that the soil samples could be millions of years old. Nerissa described how the Heytesbury Settlement was cleared for farm land in the 1960s as a soldier settlement scheme and now how thousands of trees are being replanted across the farmlands to help counter erosion and provide shelter and shade for stock.

APping into finance Rhonda Henry, an agribusiness banker from Westpac, was recently hosted by the Year 7/8 elective, ‘My Money, My Rights’ students. She helped students understand the concepts of saving, interest and some of the factors banks consider when issuing loans. Students had to work out how important saving was to them and justify their decisions in a group exercise with some interesting outcomes. Thanks Rhonda and Westpac for the hats.
