Meet our Foreign Exchange Students

May will mark the end of Exeter-Milligan’s third year of participation in the foreign exchange program. Students participating in this program must attend a full school year in a foreign country, and complete all classes with above average grades. Those who came to Exeter are doing all their work in English, which is not their native language. Added to the language differences, there are also cultural and lifestyle changes that each must make. In order to become part of their new community and school. During the course of their literature class, each gave a mini bio, and compared school life in America with school in their own countries. Here is what they each had to say.

Anna Høg Dedenroth My name is Anna and I’m 16 years old. I’m from Copenhagen, Denmark where I live with my mom and dad, and my two younger brothers, but this year I have been living a little bit outside of Cordova in Nebraska, USA with Dacel, Doug, and Maitlyn Thomsen. In my free time I enjoy hanging out with my friends and family. When I first got here I was met by a big culture shock. Everything is different from Denmark, but I really like it here and right now I’m enjoying my last couple of months before I go home. I became an exchange student because I wanted to go out and experience something completely new. I wanted to see how the world works outside of Denmark and try to live life as an American teenager for nine months. I have learned so much this year about myself and about different cultures. I have made a lot of new friends and it’s going to be hard leaving all of them when I go back to Denmark. I came to this country eight months ago, and I can still be surprised by some of the differences I find everyday. Coming here was definitely a culture change and I was surprised by some of the changes that I have seen. The way people dress; the houses, people’s opinions, and the schools are just some of the few things that I have found to be different from back in Denmark. American schools surprised me the most. Before I came here I knew that school would be different, but as I arrived I soon found out that it was even more different than I expected. One of the first things that I noticed was that people dress a lot different than what I’m use to. In Denmark people dress up everyday. There are no sweatpants or yoga pants, or days without make-up. People wear nice clothes to school and nice clothes on weekends. Here in Nebraska I see people coming to school, looking like they just got out of bed. I enjoy not thinking about how I look every morning and going back to dressing up will definitely be a challenge. Another thing that is impossible to overlook is America’s fascination of sports. Over here sports is a big part of school life. Football and basketball are the biggest things here in Nebraska, as far as I see. In Denmark sports in general is not a big thing at all. Soccer and handball is the most popular sports, and they are not connected to the schools in any way. If you want to play a sport, you will be doing it in a club outside of school. It is not very often that you meet someone who plays a sport in Denmark. Here in America, everyone plays sports, year around. Every school takes a lot of pride in their sports teams and there is practice everyday. When there is a game, you can expect to see every student, every parent, and every teacher there to show support. I think it is a great way to unite people and it creates a good community.

In Denmark we always hear about how school in America is a lot easier than in Denmark, and after coming here I can see why people are saying that, because it’s true. The subjects that American students take in four years of high school here are the same ones I took in 7th, 8th, and 9th grade in Denmark. I don’t feel like people are less smart here, they just learn things a little bit later than we do in Europe. I think the way school works in Denmark is better, but I do enjoy the way things are done over here. You don’t have to be stressed about school all the time and you can take more time to just be a teenager and live life. Going on this exchange year has been one of the best decisions that I have ever made. This year has definitely changed a lot about me, and it has changed the way I see the world today. I have learned a lot about myself and about how it is to live outside of a big city, and of Denmark. I have some new insights that I would never have gained if I hadn't come here. This has been the best year of my life so far.

Ingrid Remmen My name is Ingrid and I’m 18 years old. I’m from Norway and I live with my parents and I have one brother that goes to college. In Nebraska, I’ve been living with Mary Lou and Tom Vossler on a farm between Exeter and Milligan, and I think it’s a nice experience for my exchange year. The different from where I live in Norway and here in Exeter, is that Exeter it’s a smaller and closer community than I’m used to. I chose to be an exchange student because I wanted to experience something new and learn a different culture. I also wanted to become better in English and a year in America is a great opportunity. My best memory from the exchange year is meeting all the new people from all over the world, and now I have a family in the United States. The schools in America and in Norway have some noticeable differences. The students in Norway have more freedom to choose in school, but the students in America have more school spirit and spend more time together in school and sports. The school systems in America and Norway are slightly different. While the students in America are in school all day and have to stay in campus, the students in Norway have a more open-campus system. We can leave campus during lunch and students are responsible for returning on time for afternoon classes. We also have something compared to study hall, but we don’t have a classroom where we can study. We can choose to go to the library or go home. The efficiency of the study hall in America is better, because we have to sit in a classroom and do our homework. In Norway the teachers don’t have their own classroom, but they share a workroom with other teachers. Both the students and the teachers change classrooms based on their schedule. But usually the classroom for example math is in the same area in the school building. The school time in Norway and in America is mostly the same. In Norway we start at 7:55 and go to 15:10, but can go to or leave school early or late depending on whether the student has a free period(s) at the beginning or end of the day. In Norway we have a lunch period around about 12:00 and it lasts for 40 minutes. In America the school serves a hot lunch and we all eat together in one place. In Norway, we have more of a cafeteria, and the students can buy foods like baguettes, sandwiches, salad or different types of beverages. They can also choose to eat outside of school, go over to the grocery stores or restaurants, or bring food from home (a lot of kids do).

The differences between school in Norway and America are different but still not so different. I cannot choose one of them I like better. Because since I have experienced both, I will say both schools are overall very good, and they both have a system that works.

Felix Richter My name is Felix Richter. I am 16 years old and come from Munich, Germany. I’m a foreign exchange student at Exeter Milligan. I have one sister and one brother. I live with the Sheffields in Exeter. I like playing sports. The life in a small town is very different since I come from a big city. I always wanted to come to America and that’s why I chose to be a foreign exchange student. There are many memories I’ll take home with me but one of the best will be the Football State Championship. American High Schools are very different from the German Schools. I moved here to Nebraska in August 2013 and visit the Exeter Milligan High School. I come from Germany where I finished my 10th grade year before I came here. The differences are huge. In this essay I will compare the American High School with the German School. As I said earlier, I came to Nebraska in August 2013 and since then I am going to the Public High School in Exeter. One of the differences is definitely sports. Over here High Schools have many athletic programs. All that is related to the High School. In Germany are no athletic programs, such as football or basketball. All that is club related in Germany. School is longer in America. Over here we have 8 periods each day with one lunch break. In Germany we usually always have 6 periods with 2 lunch breaks. We have one short lunch after the 2nd period and then one big lunch after the 4th period. We only have one or two days a week where we have 8 periods. We also don’t have the same periods each day. In America you have the same schedules every day while you have a different one in Germany each day. School is a lot harder in Germany. After I got home from school I always had to study and do homework for at least 2 hours. School is really hard and you have a lot of pressure your 12th grade year because of all the final exams. A lot of people fail their 12th grade year and have to retake it because it’s so hard. Since I’m here I have never really studied for school. I can get all my homework done in school and it’s really not very hard. My final thought is that I like the American School system a lot better. People can stay in shape by doing sports that are related to the school. If you do club sports in Germany it sometimes can interfere with the school so you can’t always go to all your games. School is also easier what a lot of people appreciate in my age. I personally think that the German School system is way too hard and takes too much time from the kids. Even though German students get out of school at 1:30PM they sometimes have no free time at all because they have so much homework to do.

performance, the group travelled to York for a lunch of Chinese food before heading to the radio station. The students performed on the KAWL Old Time Radio Show at 1 p.m. They were sponsored by Generations Bank. The students performed well all day and represented our communities in a positive manner. Music Department Trip to Dallas Thank you to everyone who contributed to the music department's trip to Dallas at the end of March. Several parents organized and contributed to a supper before we got on the bus. The food was very appreciated by the students, even the next day as they ate most of the leftovers. Thank you to Chris Harre, Paul Sheffield and Karla Sheffield for helping to sponsor the trip. The group left around 11:30 p.m. on Friday, March 28, and drove through the night. We arrived in Dallas Saturday morning and our first stop was the Sixth Floor Museum. The museum was followed by lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe. The group then toured AT&T Stadium (Dallas Cowboys.) The venue was being prepared for the Final Four basketball games, so there wasn't a field to walk out onto this year. After checking in to the hotel to freshen up and change, the group ended the day seeing a fantastic production of The Wizard of Oz. Sunday morning started a bit later. The group spent the morning and early afternoon at Six Flags Over Texas. They then attended the Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament. Several students commented that this was their favorite part of the trip. On Monday morning the group had a clinic with Dr. Jack Delaney on the beautiful SMU campus. They then boarded the bus and drove to Oklahoma City where they heard a ranger presentation and toured the OKC Bombing Memorial. The bus arrived back to Exeter at about 12:45 a.m. The students were incredibly respectful and well-behaved on the entire trip. Parents and community members can be very proud of how they were represented. Thank You! Thank you to Dacel Thomsen for driving a van to help sponsor Class D All-State in Kearney March 21-22.

View from the Front Office Ever had one of those times when things didn't quite go as planned? It appears that spring has been one of those times for me. It seems like we were just celebrating Christmas with Karla's family in Phoenix and here we are getting ready for graduation. I truly thought the winter and spring would go a little slower. Much to my surprise, as you read this we should be getting ready for graduation at our house. An even better outcome of this quickly approaching endeavor is we have survived the "list season." When our first child graduated, Karla had come up with this "10 minute job" idea - little things that could be done around the house in 10 minutes or less. These jobs then made it onto our "to do" lists. There seemed to be an endless supply of these lists. After graduation in 2009, we had a ceremonial list burning, thinking we had finally rid ourselves of those dastardly little things. Maybe we have just gotten better over the years, making sure everything was kept up to snuff. Or, which is likely the case, everything is done enough to the point that we hope people won't notice. BREAKING NEWS - LIST ALERT UPDATE - Over the Easter break, we not only had a MAJOR to do list, but Karla also had this spring-cleaning itinerary. This itinerary not only had what jobs needed to be completed, but also included a time frame. Somehow I think this little gem was a Pinterest product. Note on my own to do list - reprogram the router to block Pinterest or anything dealing with cleaning. We did survive, but it was touch and go for a while :-) Since Devin is a senior, we have been celebrating some "lasts" this year including last football game as a parent (a state championship is a great way to end) and last Christmas with grandpa (Karla's father passed away earlier this year.) These 18 years have certainly flown by. We have always been told to enjoy the time with our kids because before you know it, they will be gone. So true! However, as we get ready to send Devin off to the Army in July, we look forward to Devin starting the next stage in his life. Over the years, we have tried to prepare him for this step and I guess we can consider this an investment - an investment not only in his future, but in others as well. As our kids have been involved in activities over the years, we have not demanded they be the best, but we have always asked for them to give it their best effort. If they could honestly say that was the best they could give, then that was a successful venture. Not every adventure has been a success and we have not tried to shelter our kids from failure. In fact, our philosophy has been in order to experience success one has to taste failure. As Devin moves on to his new adventure, we hope we have been able to prepare him to be a success - to give it his best effort. There is another last we will experience this year. Even though Haylee is stuck with us for the next three years, I will now be an outnumbered quantity in the household. This will be the first time there will be more females than males in our home. To rub some salt in the wound, we plan to add another female in the fall as we will host an exchange student from the Netherlands. Haylee will finally get her "sister" she has always wanted. So, here we are, not even wrapped up with this year and already planning for next year. As this school year comes to a close, take some time to reflect on what has transpired. Be a little introspective and ask, "Have I given it my best effort?" If the answer is yes, then celebrate that success. If the answer is no, then make a plan of how to give it your best effort. We all serve as role models and if we aren't giving our best effort, how can we expect the next generation to do so. Consider it an investment in everyone's future. They all deserve the best we can give.

eBook  Library  is  Here!    Exeter-Milligan  Public  Schools  has  joined  a  consortium  to  purchase  eBooks  for  our  students.  In  December,  some  staff  and  a  few  students  were  able  to  pilot  the  project.  January,  all  other  students  were  able  to  acquire  a  username  and  password  to  access  the  eBooks.  Several  7-12  students  are  able  to  use  their  iPods,  iPads  or  phones  to  access  and  read  the  books.    The  elementary  are  using  their  iPads  to  read  the  eBooks  in  school.  Each  student  2-6  has  their  own  username  and  password  and  during  library  or  free  time  they  read  their  books.  Kindergarten  and  First  Graders  are  reading  eBooks  on  their  iPads  but  the  teachers  are  checking  the  books  out  for  them.  The  eBooks  give  our  students  the  opportunity  to  utilize  their  iPads  in  a  new  way.  Make  sure  you  ask  your  child  about  the  eBooks  and  the  Magic  Wall.    Summer  reading  is  important  and  encouraged  for  all  students  K-12.  To  help  keep  your  child  reading  have  them  check  out  the  Magic  Wall  and  see  what  books  are  available.  If  you  want  your  student’s  user-name  and  password  to  keep  them  reading  during  the  summer  just  follow  the  steps  below.    1.  Download  BLIO  on  the  device  you  plan  to  use  for  reading  the  E-books.    2.  Email  me  @  [email protected]  to  get  your  child’s  user-name  and  password  for  the

Magic  Wall  and  BLIO  3.  Check  out  an  eBook-  Click  the  appropriate  link  below  to  check  out  a  book.  The  first  time  you
