Davis reflects Lavoie’s traditional ethi-cal and craft-oriented values, resulting inloyalty and support from suppliers and col-leagues – architects often commission himas a designer when they need highly detailedand accurate millwork and interior finishingdesigns.

Davis, who has taught design at Algo-nquin College, maintains excellent relation-ships with the college and frequentlyprovides experience for students and recentgraduates – giving them career challengesrarely experienced for someone just enter-ing the business. Julia Smith, a talentedgraduate from Algonquin’s interior designprogram, has quickly become Davis’s “righthand person”. Alan Todd, formerly chief ofdesign at the National Gallery of Canada, isretained by the practice as a senior consult-ant and the practice is also represented inMontreal by Isabelle Gauthier, an interiordesign graduate with a specialty in lightingdesign.

Todd said: “My design work in the mu-seum, art gallery and exhibition sectors candemand exceptional attention to detailwhere national treasures are concerned. In acompetitive business I succeed because I amable to guarantee my institutional clients aproduct that conforms to the best interna-tional standard. What has impressed meabout my association with Tim Davis and

his core team is the constant broad level ofservice and design integrity demonstratedabout all matters related to the design andproduction process that delivers completeresults.”

Brian Vlaming, CEO of LTR Industries, which fabricates millwork and interior fin-ishings, says Davis always takes care to pro-vide extremely detailed and clearinstructions – and gives his team challeng-ing projects which engage LTR’s employ-ees. “His jobs are always unique and welldetailed,” Vlaming said. “He always ex-pects a high level of quality and finish – he’svery consistent in the type of work we canexpect.

Davis isn’t a push-over – he seeks outand ensures he has competitive bids fromqualified suppliers – but the suppliers knowthe competition will be fair, and when theirwork is done, they’ll receive proper recog-nition and compensation.

Salli McSweeney, from the Interior De-sign Group (IDG), says she is impressedwith how Davis maintains and enhances re-lationships with suppliers and colleagues, such as her own business. Davis is an ex-cellent listener, she said. “He’s very goodat administration as well as design.”

Similarly, general contractor TonyO’Malley, president of A.W.O. Holdings, says he enjoys working with Davis because“he’s very accurate on his dimensions, andvery set in on his details.” O’Malley sayshe has worked with Davis for about 10 yearsincluding projects in Ireland, France and

England. “Davis incorporates new ideas for the

client, rather than just run of the mill rubberbase on drywall,” he said. “There’s inter-esting details in corner guards, glazing,

making sure the finish corresponds withelectrical utilities, and things like that. He

tends to want to placeeverything in the correctmanner rather than (simplydesign) run of the mill ten-ant fit ups.”

Davis’ attention to qual-ity and detail has resulted insome significant large scalecommissions, and ongoingbusiness with internationalcompanies like Pacific Net-work Services Ltd., a finan-cial services company, withassignments in Vancouver,B.C., Shannon (Ireland),Paris (France) and Oxford(England) in addition to Ot-tawa (where the companyoperates the Accu-Rate for-eign exchange service.)

More recently, PacificNetwork Services soughtout Davis to “completelydecorate, furnish and equipa very high-end penthouse

apartment in Cape Townoverlooking the sea” for oneof its senior executives. SoDavis mobilized his teamand travelled to SouthAfrica to complete thework.

For international proj-ects, “we do a research visitwhere we measure and lookat the property in detail and

then we try to form somekey alliances with localtrades or suppliers andthrough talking with themwe develop a temporarynetwork of qualified people, and supplement that by tak-ing people from here to dothe work, which in some

cases works better thanusing local employees,”Davis said.

Davis sees more work inthe future in a diversity ofpublic and private sectorprojects, in Canada andoverseas, all of which willbenefit from his team’s

great attention to detail andquality.

“The best buzz you getas a designer is when youwalk onto the site and seethe things that have been inyour head and on paper, sometimes for manymonths, right there in front

of you. And of course it isalways very rewardingwhen a client is delightedwith the outcome of theproject and provides posi-tive feed back and subse-quent referrals” he said.
