NOW THERE’S AN EASIER WAYTO PLAN LINEAR PROJECTS

Many planning engineers create plans forlinear projects (such as rail, road) usingdrawing software packages like CAD aswell as Microsoft Excel. Whilst creatingplans with these packages can berelatively straightforward, keeping themup-to-date can be problematic becausethere is no easy way of reschedulingactivities.

Now, there is an easier way.

TILOS, a powerful time-location planningsoftware tool, combines the flexibility of adrawing package with the power of projectmanagement. Plans are represented on atwo-dimensional chart with timerepresented on one axis and location onthe other.

With TILOS, you get the best of bothworlds – a scaled drawing of your projectfully integrated with a comprehensiveproject management system.

POWERFUL, INTUITIVESCHEDULING

■ Start planning immediately withindustry-specific templates withcalendars and trades.

■ Draw activities onto the chart using themouse as an electronic pencil – justlike drawing on paper.

■ Drag and drop activities with themouse.

■ Draw links between activities in thetime/location chart and reschedule theplan to identify the critical path andnew project end date.

■ Simulate alternative project sequencesby changing the working times and thechaining of operations.

COMMUNICATE PLANS MOREEFFECTIVELY WITH TILOS

■ It is easier to understand the status ofa linear project with a two-dimensionalplan than a one-dimensional plan.

■ Printouts of your TILOS plans can bescaled to any size.

■ The quality of printed and electronicplans will help you win contracts and deliver them more efficiently.

■ You can ‘drill down’ through the chart to view increasingly detailed layers ofinformation. This ensures that everyone receives the right level ofinformation they need in order to carry out their work.

■ Add comments and drawings to yourproject chart to highlight importantprocesses.

■ Create PDF files for sending chartselectronically or as a model for theplotting service.

■ Show several different stages ofconstruction on one chart or scale thedistance axis to compress or stretchindividual sections.

■ Route and performance data can beused to comment on processes viavariables – with this informationupdated automatically when task data changes.

SCALED LOCATION CHARTS

■ Powerful drawing tools make it easier tocreate the distance drawing via grid-controlled placement of symbols andobjects based on distance coordinates.

■ An extensive symbol library reduces theeffort required for preparing drawings.

■ Import existing charts directly into thechart and scale them to sizeautomatically.

One chart presents all the information youneed

- Split the chart into multiple sections soyou can display more information.

- Clearly show the different stages ofconstruction.

- Include detailed drawings with siteplans.

- Show resource usage (plant, people, materials) using histograms.

- Comprehensive cost charts.

COST AND QUANTITY PLANNING

■ The integration of cost, quantity andperformance planning reduces the riskassociated with each project.

■ Task duration can be calculated fromthe working speed (performance) andthe distance - or from the work quantityand the performance.

■ Resource utilisation is calculated interms of quantities or time using flexiblecalculation models.

■ Cost and quantity charts with a table ofvalues show the time-specific andabsolute demand for resources over theduration of a project.

■ The resource utilisation chart displaysdemands for resources next to the timeaxis in a clear and compact manner.

■ Costs and income are compared andthe liquidity curve plotted.

FLEXIBLE DRAWING

■ In a project file, projects, scales, siteplans and charts can be defined in theform of cells.

■ ‘Views’ of the project can be created bycombining basic cells in any way youlike.

■ TILOS can produce an unlimited numberof ‘views’ onto a project.

■ Cell width is calculated via the locationor time axis and the specified scale. Anytime or location section can bedisplayed in one view.

■ Neighbouring cells can be synchronizedvia the location or time axis. As a result,TILOS always displays the distancedrawing correctly scaled with theschedule.

■ Axis orientation and direction (increasingor decreasing) can be set individually foreach cell.

■ Dividable view windows show positionand site plans as well as the flow chartin a window with synchronization duringhorizontal or vertical scrolling.

PROGRESS TRACKING

Realistic planning is the foundation forproject success. However projects andspecifications change all the time. WithTILOS, you can regularly update your

TILOS is a system that allows you todraw and calculate the flow chartusing real machine performancedata. The chart immediately showsclashes with the tight scheduleprescribed by the railways as well asinterruptions and site data.

The simulations allow you to rapidlyfind the optimum sequence ofoperations for the project. This wouldnot be possible just using bar chartsor a CAD system as a drawing tool.

TILOS saves you time and money –even when the ultimate sequence ofoperations is still being planned. Theoptimised construction sequencealso allows other considerably largersavings so your investment will soonpay for itself.

projects and constantly monitor actualprogress against plan.

■ Freely definable report lines withprogress displayed show which taskswere completed – and in which timeperiod.

■ The report line shows increased ordecreased performance with referenceto the reporting date at a glance.

■ The original plan can be archived andloaded into the current project. Thisallows you to detect variancesimmediately and compensate for themin good time.

■ Rescheduling instantly updates thecurrent project status and calculatesthe new deadlines with reference to thereporting date.

■ The progress and the actual data canbe imported and exported via the freelydefinable ASCII interface.

1 HEIGHTENED CLARITY

If the project has a linear structure (track-laying, roadbuilding, tunnelling, bridge and pipeline construction),the chart ensures heightened clarity and shows theconnection between geometry and constructionperformance.

2 DEMONSTRATE YOUR ABILITY TO DELIVER

TILOS allows you to present high quality plans to yourcustomers underlining your know-how and giving themconfidence in your ability to deliver. The same qualitycan be achieved with PDF files. Oversized charts canalso be printed at high resolution.

3 ONE INTEGRATED SYSTEM

You do the planning while TILOS calculates thedeadlines and the total time required at the push of a button. TILOS gives you the entire network planningtechnology, as well as cost and resource planning in one integrated system.

4 OPEN DATA EXCHANGE

TILOS exchanges data with other project managementsystems. Transfer programs are available for AstaPowerproject (included in the base system), MicrosoftProject, Primavera and Microsoft Excel. You can alsoimport calculation data complete with quantities andcost values.

5 COST-EFFECTIVE

On average, it takes just two hours to create a chart inTILOS and one hour for each revision – so TILOS soonpays for itself compared to traditional planning methods.
