Important Information:

Cover as much of the floor surface as possible (we recommend up to 90%) so that there is sufficient heat in the room.

It may be necessary to use more than one tile heating mat to obtain the correct amount of heating.

Electrical Considerations:

A dedicated circuit is recommended for your tile heating mat.

Tile heating mats must be electrically earthed and protected by a residual current device.

The installation must comply with applicable statutory requirements where it will be installed.

Depending on the country of installation, only a qualified electrician should connect the thermostat for the tile heating mat.

The power cords of the tile heating mats are matched to the rated power of the heater. If more than one heater is connected to a thermostat, make sure that the power cord from the thermostat to the plug or supply is rated correctly for the current of the combined heaters. Overloaded cords will overheat and could cause a fire.

Recommendations: We recommend:

That you plan the layout of your tile heating mats before beginning the installation.

That when cutting the heating mat ensure that you cut the backing mesh only and not the heating wire.

That you leave a 25cm gap around the perimeter of the room.

That you install a thermostat with a floor sensor

That you use a rubber or plastic trowel when applying adhesive and the thinset cement.

That you ensure that the tiles are embedded in tile adhesive and that there are no air gaps between the tile and the heating wire as this could affect the performance of the system.

That you wear soft soled shoes so that you do not damage the heating wires.

That you check that the system is working by doing a resistance check before applying the thinset cement or tiling commences

We do not recommend:

That you commence installation of the tile heating mat on a concrete floor that has not fully cured, is sandy or powdery.

That you walk too frequently on the heating mat to minimize the possibility of damaging the heating cables.

That the power cables are crossed under the heating mat

That you overlap heating mats.

That you install one heating mat across two rooms.

That you join the heating mats in series, ensure that each power lead is connected to the thermostat.

That you position the heating mat so that it crosses over an expansion joint in the subfloor.

That you use the heating system to dry the thinset cement.

That you overload the electrical circuit.

That you cut the heating mat to make it smaller or cut the heating wires to make them shorter.

That you cut tiles on top of the heating mat.

That you use the heating system until the screed and tile adhesive has fully cured. This can take between 14-28 days.

Step 1: Check and prepare the subfloor

Tile heating mats may be installed over any subfloor that is approved for tile or stone applications, and on concrete slabs

Where floors have previously covered with cork, vinyl, stick down carpeting or parquet wood blocks, all traces of these coverings need to be removed as well as all traces of adhesive or bitumen.

Carefully inspect the subfloor and make sure it is clean, free of sharp edges, nails and any other materials that may damage the heating mat.

The subfloor must also be dry and level and smooth.

If there is a damp proofing layer, this layer must be covered with a layer of sand/cement or screed. This layer should be no less than 2”. A minimum of 28 days should be allowed for drying before priming this screed. Not sure about this

Step 2. Plan the layout of the tile heating system on the subfloor before beginning the installation.

Review the area where the tile heating mat is to be installed and plan the layout.

We recommend that you draw a plan of the area to scale, indicating the obstacles and the power point

In bathrooms, remember to include the area under the basin and around the toilet.

Remember to keep a spacing of 25cm from the edge of heating area

To assist you in your planning, the following are suggested turns that can be used for the installation of these heating mats.

Please note a single heating mat cannot be installed across a number of rooms.

U Turn: Cut the backing mesh all the way across

without cutting the heating wire.

Rotate the mat 180˚ and continue row.

The mesh must lie side by side so as to prevent cold spots.

Maintain a distance of 2” between the ends of the heating wires to prevent hot spots.

Full Corner: This is used to make sharp turns

Cut the backing mesh all the way across without cutting the heating wire.

Rotate the mat 90˚

Flip rotated part of mat over

Maintain a distance of 50mm between the ends of the heating wires to prevent hot spots.

Open Corner: This is used to make a turn where it

is heating a corner is unnecessary.

Cut the backing mesh all the way across without cutting the heating wire.

Rotate the mat 90˚

Obstacle cut#1: This is used to manoeuvre mat

around obstacles.

Cut the backing mesh all the way across without cutting the heating wire.

Flip mat over

Obstacle cut#2: This is used to go around obstacles

and continue the row.

Cut the backing mesh three times or more on alternating sides.

7

Gently stretch mat (not wire) so the heating wire runs along the obstacle.

Continue the row.

Step 3: Install the Tile heating mat

Using a permanent marker or chalk line, mark where you would like to position your heating mat on the subfloor, as well as any planned cuts or turns on the sub floor for ready reference during final installation.

Remove the tile heating mat from the packaging , unroll it completely flat and place it in the required position with the adhesive side to the floor.

The heating mat should always be placed with the mesh down on the subfloor and the heating cable on top of the mesh

Keep the tile heating mat at least 25cm from the edges of the room.

Position it in such a way that the power cord will be able to reach the thermostat to which it will be connected.

Ensure that the power leads do not cross over or under the heating mat or themselves

If you are installing multiple heating mats in a single room, you will want to position each so that the heating cables or power leads do not cross over one another.

The power lead wire is approximately 3m long and generally considered the beginning of the heating mat.

You can shorten the power lead if necessary, but never shorten the heating wire.

8

Note: Heating mats must never overlap, as this will cause overheating and the cable will burn out. If the subfloor is a concrete slab with an expansion joint, the heating mat should be positioned so that it does not cover the joint.

Note: Heating mats must never be attached to each other in series, but the power

leads of each heating mat must be connected separately to the thermostat.

9

When cutting the heating mats, only cut the backing mesh, not the heating wire. If you have one, attach a cable monitor to alert the installer in case of damage to the heating wire. Step 4: Install the thermostat floor sensor When installing the thermostat, install an 8080x38 deep electrical box. Electrical boxes are typically placed 1.2m-1.6m off the floor.

Chase a 10mm channel into the floor and push the conduit with the floor probe already inserted down the wall trunking and into the floor channel Ensure that the sensor is installed in-between element wires. The sensor tip must not be placed directly under an element wire. This is to ensure that the average heating temperature is measured, and not the temperature of the heating element.

Page 10: Tiles Up to 70% OFF High Street Prices - …...Step 1: Check and prepare the subfloor Tile heating mats may be installed over any subfloor tile or stone applications, and on Where

Step 5: Cover the system in thinset cement (flexible levelling compound)

It is advisable to use a rubber or plastic trowel when spreading the adhesive or thin set compound between the cables to prevent the possibility of damaging the cables. We recommend a ¼ inch notched trowel to ensure sufficient coverage.

It is also recommended that you do not walk too frequently on the heating mat before the thinset cement is applied as this will minimise the possibility of damaging the heating wires

You can use either a flexible adhesive or a thin set compound to fill out in between the heating cables making sure that there are no air gaps present.

A flexible floor adhesive must be used before the finished floor is laid .

Please check with the adhesive manufacturer that it is suitable for use with underfloor heating.

Once the thin set has set the tiles can be installed.

Do not dislodge or damage the heating element while laying the tiles.

Do not cut tiles on top of the heating mats.

Ensure that each tile is solidly embedded in the adhesive , avoiding air gaps and voids.

The heating system should not be used to aid drying of the floor.

Step 6: Install and connect the thermostat.

Once the tile or stone flooring has been installed, install and connect the thermostat.

We recommend that the connection of the thermostat is completed by a qualified electrician.

Wait 14 days for the tile adhesive to cure before using the heating system.
