Rocket Works (Pty) Ltd is an owner managed company. The business is a new business and has been trading for just under two years

The business model is different to most, in that Rocket Works offers their stoves as either complete assembled units or in component form as a flat-pack option. This flat-pack option opens up many doors, as it leads to job creation and skills development. It also allows for much more cost effective exporting of the product and the development of assembly and distribution centers all around the world, stimulating the global economy. By using specially designed hand tools, supplied by Rocket Works, a stove can be assembled in under a minute.

Thanks to the strong engineering influence in the business, the production lines are already able to produce 400 stoves per day. This number will be increased to 2000 units per day within the next six months, equating to 45 000 clean cook-stoves per month, and that number can be doubled every year.

Durban has been selected as the head office and as the location for the first production facilities. It is home to the busiest port on the African continent and is often referred to as “The Gateway to Africa”. From here stoves can be shipped worldwide and up across the African continent. The business is run from a basic administrative office, located on the same property as the owner’s well equipped engineering workshop.

Most of the design work and prototyping is done in-house in their engineering workshop. Many of the specialized machines are developed and manufactured by Rocket Works and placed in these factories. This new business has indirectly created jobs for approximately thirty people.

Rocket Works is a partner of the ‘Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves’, a public-private initiative led by the United Nations Foundation to save lives, improve livelihoods, empower women and preserve the environment by creating a thriving global market for clean cooking solutions. More information on this can be found at www.cleancookstoves.org.

Rocket Works aims to improve the lives of the stove users, by reducing the time they expend collect-ing fuel, by reducing the amount of money they spend on fuels, stoves and health care and by reduc-ing the time required to cook a meal. Within 5 years they aim to have made a dramatic improvement in people’s lives, to have helped to reduce smoke related illness and death, and to have contributed significantly to the reduction of harmful emissions and deforestation rates on each continent.
