To Oliver, my friend, husband, and lover still alive in my
heart and soul, and especially in Camellia and in Tiger
Trail.
All my writing is thanks to Rod and Shelley, Leonie and
John, adamant stalwarts, and to Claire and Nina; goodfriends who keep me to the grind. Latterly I have had strong
help from Marion and Miles. Technology is not my forte,
thanks, to Mark, Haydn and mainly Rod. Also moral
support from Dirk and Gari.

Chapter 1
The river ferry approached, drifting in and out of vision, as it
loomed through the early morning wisps of mist. The haze was
lying low over the water, hindering the view of this small
tributary of the Brahma Putra.
The mist hovered, still to be dispersed by the rising sun, which was barely visible on the horizon. The weak dawning
rays were shining through the trees, silhouetting the fringe of
jungle which outlined the river bank.
This scene had not altered from time immemorial, as no
one tried to make things happen more quickly. Now, however,
the ferry was propelled by a noisy, smelly, outboard motor, as
well as being poled like a punt. The ferry barely held its own
against the sluggish current. Speed was immaterial. The ferry
would arrive sometime, as it always did, no point in fretting
about the slowness.
The suns pale, white light, which shone through the mistymorning, was having difficulty making colours appear in the
drab scene. The water was muddy, and the sandy shore was
looking dingy. There was an earth road, leading down to the
river bank, which was paved with cut and split bamboos. These were tied together to form a mat, giving some traction to
any motor vehicles when they were joining, or leaving, the
ferry.
The villagers, who waited for the ferry, were wearing plain
homespun clothes. The colours of these had faded by much
washing in the river water, as well as daily wearing. These
people waited patiently with their cattle, or stood by their
squeaky, wheeled bullock carts. They squatted down as theydrank the tea, which had been provided by char wallahs. The
tea came from urns, whose polished brass flashed highlights,
relieving the monotonous browns.

There was one vehicle waiting for the ferry. It was a Land
Rover, which was being driven by James Jansen. He was tall,
dark and handsome, dressed in grey slacks and shirt, with his
black hair falling in a wave over his forehead. He was
accompanied by his new wife, Vanessa. She seemed to be
fascinated by the scene in front of her. James watched her
expressive face, registering her varying emotions. They
changed from surprise, to disgust, and finished with fear of the
crossing.
No wonder, he mused. Almost overnight she had been
transported from her home in London, to the foothills of the
Himalayas, where time seems to have stood still. She watchedthe bullock carts which were packed with personal belongings
and livestock. She was bemused. James and Vanessa had
married after a swift tumultuous courtship.
Now James was on his way back to join his film crew.
They were making a documentary about the fast
disappearing Indian tiger, in its natural habitat. James had
inherited a small fortune from a bachelor uncle, so did not
need to work. However the life style of a wild lifephotographer suited him. He smiled as he looked at his new
bride. Tall, blonde, elegant and very concerned about her
surroundings.
Van, would you drive the Land Rover on to the ferrywhile I make a recording of your efforts with the video
camera? he asked.
Not on your life, replied Vanessa. Im not used todriving this vehicle, and if that bamboo mat collapses, Ill endup in the drink. Give me the camera, Jamie. I would be much
happier making the recording while you drive. All right, I knew I would be pushing my luck, he
answered, as he passed the camera to her.
She grasped the camera tightly, while she stood on the
river bank, worried about being too close to the water. She was
glad she was wearing laced up boots, which he had insisted shemust buy. Her outfit consisted of a pair of light green pants,
with a vest of the same colour. She felt very strange, and out of
place, as all the villagers stared at her.

There was a murmur of conversation among them, and she
knew they were talking about her. She kept her gaze firmly on
the camera and the Land Rover. What would she do if James
slipped into the river with the Land Rover? It didnt bearthinking about.
James drove the Land Rover on to the ferry successfully.
He was nervous while doing so, in case he drove right
across and being unable to stop, ended up in the river. He
didnt show he was apprehensive so Vanessa would have nofear, he thought. He glanced at her where she was standing on
the river side. I had better tell her to cover her upper arms he
thought, as he guessed what the excited talk was about. Thevillagers, waiting for the ferry, would be gossiping about the
clothes she was wearing.
As soon as everyone was aboard, the ferry men started to
heave on the rope, which spanned the river at this point. It was
a heavy load and the outboard motor provided little help, but
soon everything was under control as the crewmen held their
own against the current. They pulled the ferry over by using
the rope.Im glad thats over, although Im dreading getting off. I
wonder what these people are saying about me. Vanessaglanced at the villagers, who were all crowding round the
vehicle, leaving room for the bullock carts and the other
animals at the back.
They probably come over the river in this manner every
day. You will be a touch of excitement for them, disturbingtheir routines. They are talking about a lady who has come
from the outside world. The ferry sidled across, pointing upstream all the way. It
came gently alongside another bamboo constructed landing
stage, with more bamboo covering the muddy road.
The road led further up into the foothills, on the other side
of the river. This track reached the site where the camp was
established. The camp was near to where the female tiger andher three cubs had been sighted. Forest Rangers had seen them
on the river bank, and had then informed the film crew.

James and Vanessa could have made the trip from the
airport by the helicopter which was used to service the
expedition, but James had thought the rough road and ferry trip
would appeal to Vanessas sense of adventure. It would alsogive her a practical insight on the conditions they would
encounter.
He told her when they were in the Land Rover again, that
the main road had been constructed only recently. Previously,
the only way into Assam had been by river, or by air. James
had left the Land Rover to be serviced in Gauhati, when he had
taken a three week leave. He was pleased that it was running
so well.As they came into the camp, the director of the operation,
Justin Meadows, came to meet them. He was slightly above
medium height, with brown wavy hair and bright blue eyes.
After being introduced to Vanessa, Justin seemed to want to
tell them something important, in a hurry.
Welcome Vanessa. Im very pleased to see you two.Youhave just arrived in time to look after the operation.
Why? James asked. Where are you off to?I have been having these chest pains. They started after
Id been lifting some of our heavy equipment. I dont feel toogood at all. I have checked out with our doctor over the radio,
and he has diagnosed a heart problem. That sounds serious, James exclaimed. You should have
called me earlier.
I kept expecting that it would go away, no such luck.He gave Vanessa a welcoming smile, then he turned awaysuddenly.
I will take the helicopter down to the airstrip, and then arrangea flight to Kolkata hospital for a check-up. Das Gupta, our
doctor, will meet me there. That doesnt sound toopromising, James was concerned. Dont worry about thisend, Justin. You had better get off as soon as you can. Van and
I will be carrying on with the filming and the organisation, while you are away.
Vanessa stood to one side, feeling like a spare part.

She was embarrassed because she needed to wash. Her
clothes were sticking to her back, although it was still early in
the morning. She knew her make-up was all smudged, making
things worse. She didnt know what to do, as James arrangedJustins belongings and helped him on to the incominghelicopter. The wind from the helicopter blew her hair into her
face, and dust into her eyes. As she stepped away from the
copter she looked around the compound. To her dismay, shesaw the only accommodation was a group of tents.
After James had helped him into the helicopter, Justin felt
less distressed. Mike Hudson, the helicopter pilot, checked that
Justin was as comfortable as he could be made, and that he wasfirmly strapped in.
Justin had started to put his worries into other peopleshands, and now he could concentrate on how he was feeling.
The helicopter took a short while to reach Gauhati, so he was
able to rest. He still was in a great deal of pain. I shouldnthave lifted those boxes, he thought, I was a fool to do it all on
my own. Janeswar would have helped, or have done it himself.
I forget that I am not as young as I was, but surely thirty threeisnt ancient? He closed his eyes and waited for the helicopterto land. There was a stretcher waiting for him at the airport.
He was carried by ambulance staff into the airport lounge,
where he could rest until the plane for Kolkata was due to
leave.
Do you want anything? A cool drink, perhaps? This was
suggested by a pretty ambulance nurse, who was looking afterhim.
Yes please, I really would like a drink. Not too much now, you must only sip, because it is cold.Relieved of his thirst, he lay back and observed what was
happening around him. There were only a few people going on
the flight to Kolkata. There were business men in suits, with
laptops and brief cases, and a couple of women dressed in
beautiful garments, quietly chatting to each other. He waslucky enough to be able to have three seats adjacent to each
other. His stretcher bearers put him down carefully, so he
could slide on to them, and lie down.

After the plane took off his pulse slowed, he wasnt incharge at all. He wondered about James and Janeswar, and
hoped they were coping. Fancy, James having married, and
brought his wife here. He was impressed with Vanessasattractiveness, but thought her a trifle woe begone and upset. I
hope she isnt going to be a hindrance to the operation, hethought. He would have to sort things out when he got back.
He finally dozed a little. The pain killers the ambulance staff
had given him had finally kicked in.
Meeting him in Kolkata was Dr Das Gupta.
HelloJustin, this is all a bit of a nuisance for you.
Das Gupta had boarded the plane as soon as it had landed.Ive an ambulance drawn up to the gangway, but Ill haveto ask the driver to come here and give me a hand.
Soon they were on their way to a private hospital of Das
Guptas preference. Das Gupta had made the necessaryarrangements, so when they drove up there was a pretty nurse
waiting with a wheel chair, ready to escort them inside.
Good afternoon Sir, welcome to our hospital. She pushed him into admittance, while Das Gupta had a
few words with the doctor on duty.
How are you feeling, Sir? The pretty nurse bent over himas she asked.
Better for being here, he returned, with a weak smile. She wheeled him into a ward, where he was examined and
medicine prescribed. Then his nurse took him to his private
room, where she helped him change into a hospital gown. Hefound some comfort on a soft bed.
I am going to be your day time nurse. My shift is fromeight till four. My name is Sushayla.
I am pleased to meet you, Sushayla, said Justin. This was the start of many pleasant days for Justin, under
Sushaylas expert care. They talked a good deal about varioussubjects, but Justins talk always returned to the importance of
his job. He told her they were expert photographers who tookphotos of animals in the wild.
Doing this took him too many outlandish places of the world,
out of the reach of expert care, if it were needed. She

expressed great interest in his teams work of filmingendangered species, while making a record on tape of the
fauna of the planet, for posterity. He gave her an account of his
present commission, making the video about the tiger. He
suggested she could be employed as medical officer for his
team, and he would ensure that her equipment would include a
mobile E.C.G. machine.
Sushayla had been born in India. Her father, who was of mixed
blood, had worked on the Indian railways, and had suffered an
early demise. Her mother, now deceased, was Indian, and
Sushayla had been brought up to consider herself as Indian.
She was a qualified nurse, who was fluent in English as well asher own native Hindustani. To Justin, she was sexually
attractive. Justin put her age about thirty. She had no family
attachments and with her experience, she would be perfect for
what he had in mind for her.
She was pale skinned for an Indian, but her heritage had
deterred marital advances from higher caste Indians. He told
her about their work, recapturing on video the intimate details
of the lives of the tigers in India, before they all becameextinct.
Tigers were being poached for their skins. Their bones and
body parts were also being taken, as they were valuable for
Eastern remedies. This information made a direct appeal to her
senses.
Taking advantage of her interest, Justin asked the question
which had been hovering in his mind.Would you like to come with me and be the MedicalOfficer for my team? I will ensure that your pay is better than
you get now.She gazed at him with surprise.
Do you mean would I go to Assam?Yes, and no. I mean will you be the nurse in charge of my
photographic team? I might need your services when I return.
We will buy all the important gear you need here, inChowringi Road, before we go. We dont do all our work inIndia. We go all over the world to find our subjects. What do
you say?

Sushayla tucked his sheet around him, where the doctor
had pulled it down.
I shall have to think about it.You will be a registered member of our team. He smiled
at her, with the corners of his blue eyes crinkling.
Ill tell you tomorrow, after I have had the night to thinkabout it.
Life was worth living after all, Justin thought. He liked this
girl immensely. She had such composure, and she looked
terrific. She was a qualified nurse, who was fluent in English,
and in Hindi. Justin had found that she was an only child, and
had no family attachments. With her experience she would beperfect for what he had in mind.
Sushayla spent the evening deciding what to do. It so
happened that her tenancy of her flat was expiring the next
week, so she had no worries on that score. There was no real
reason why she shouldnt join the team.Justin was sitting in a chair reading a newspaper when
Sushayla walked in.
Have you made a decision? he asked.Im coming, this was said with a beaming smile. The offer for her to be the only medical advisor to the
team, seemed infinitely more exciting than hospital routine
which was becoming increasingly boring. She accepted his
offer and immediately made arrangements about her home and
other possessions.
Sushayla was ready for a more versatile career. At thesame time, her experience would ensure she would become a
valuable member of the team. She was free to do as she
pleased, as Justin realised. Somewhere in her lineage there was
European blood which accounted for her fair skin. This was no
drawback as far as Justins romantic attachments wereconsidered.
Justin appreciated her sturdy figure, and liked what he saw
in her rounded face. She could not be called a traditionalIndian beauty, though she was vivacious, and her dark eyes lit
up her whole face when she smiled.
8/10/2019 Tiger Trail by Avril Flower
17/40
Justins offer of a job was genuine, though at this time hedid not realise thoughts of a closer relationship were
fulminating at the back of his mind.
The hospital authorities were not enthralled by her
resignation, but Dr Das Gupta endorsed the idea. She would
have more challenging commitments with the wild life team.
Also she would be able to give him competent reports on the
teams health while they were up country, where there were noresident doctors.
Justin was pleased to go on a shopping expedition up and
down Chowringi Road, purchasing extra medical equipment
and supplies with Sushaylas, and Das Guptas, help andadvice.Actually all he had to do was provide the cash. It was over
his budget, but his London office would cover the extra
expenses, and it was not as if it was down to this one
operation. The medical set up would be required on any further
operation in inaccessible places.
Sushayla quickly suppressed any presentiments, as she and
Justin set off for Kolkata airport to catch the plane up toGauhati, where their helicopter would meet them to provide
transport for their onward trip to their camp. Justin appeared to
have recovered completely, and their positions were reversed,
as he was looking after her on their journey.
Sushayla looked very different now, wearing a colourful,
tightly fitting, dark green silk blouse, which accentuated her
well-formed breasts. This was accompanied by an equallybright creamsari with dark greenedging.
In Justins eyes, she seemed a different person. She nowlooked like an enterprising woman of the world, a change from
the demure nurse he was used to, in her plain uniform. Justin
was surprised at the change.
The drab, white, hospital uniform had done nothing for her
figure, though her shapely legs were now hidden.
He smiled at her.Is this your first flight? he asked.Yes, Sir.Oh, dont call me that, my name is Justin.
8/10/2019 Tiger Trail by Avril Flower
18/40
I should call you Mr Meadows, as we called you in thehospital.
Oh, theres no need to be so formal. I wont be callingyou nurse, Justin smiled. Oh look! There are crocodiles inthat pool down there!
Sushayla looked down, amazed at what she could see.
Involuntarily she grasped Justins sleeve.Dont worry, he laughed, covering her hand with his, we
are not going down yet. Dont be frightened, enjoy the view.Im sure I am safe, she smiled, I have often wondered
what it would be like to fly in a plane, but I never thought it
would come true.Well, this is the beginning of many flights. We often go todifferent places in the world, let alone India, and if things pan
out, you will be coming with us to look after my health.I am looking forward to it, Justin. He relaxed, and sat back in the seat, pleased with himself.
Sushayla gazed out of the window, amazed at how much
she could see. As the plane carried them further into the wilds,
the countryside changed. The houses became fewer, and theplains stretched into the distance. Soon the crocodiles had been
left far behind. The dark green of the jungle area was a sudden
surprise. The trees massed together making a dull carpet,
which eventuated into the sweeps of bright green tea, growing
in different plantations.
They landed in Dibrughar Airport, where Mike Hudson
was waiting with the helicopter.Hello Justin, youve made a quick recovery! Mike smiledat Sushayla.
Good day, Mike. Yes, Ive been lucky. Let me introduceyou to Sushayla, she is going to be the Medic for our team.
Mike shook hands with Sushayla.
Welcome to Assam, he said with a smile.I am pleased to meet you, Sushayla said with confidence,
Im looking forward to meeting the rest of Justins team. The helicopter took them over tea gardens and the Brahma
Putra, to land in the camp in the jungle.

Sushayla watched the ground approach and grasped the
harness which was around her. Despite her anxiety, the
helicopter deposited her gently on firm earth. She looked
outside, eyes sparkling with anticipation. She was amazed to
see an expanse of green grass surrounded by jungle.
The only signs of habitation were some tents.

didnt know where these things could be found. He put hishead out of the tent and yelled.
Bearer!At once someone came running.
Salaam Sahib, bearer nai hai, hum parni wallah hai. There isnt a bearer? You are the cooks help? Well youll
do. Cold water with lemon for the Memsahib to drink, boiled
mind! And where can she wash? The cooks assistant pointed with his chin to the ablution
area, and then dashed off to get the water.
Vanessa settled down at last to have a rest after she had
had a wash, and changed into a pale yellow outfit. She was amazed that she had to wash in cold water.
James felt tired himself, and was pleased the boy had
brought him a drink too. He lay down on his bed for ten
minutes or so. They both fell asleep for an hour or more.
James woke suddenly and decided he must get things
moving.
He stepped outside and called for Janeswar.
Janeswar came quickly. He had been washing the mud offthe Land Rover.
Yes Sir? He greeted James.James quickly interposed, please dont be so formal. As
we are to work as a team, I would much prefer you to call me
James. He held out his hand for Janeswar to shake.I will try to remember that, James, Janeswar replied with
a friendly grin, returning the shake. Janeswar was tall and wellmade. He was dressed in khaki shirt and shorts, with heavy
boots for walking in the jungle. The boots were tightly laced to
forbid the entry of leeches.
I have been round the infrared cameras this morning, butnone had recorded anything.
What do you mean? James asked, feeling he wasnt up tospeed. I know all about video equipment and recording, why
do we need infrared cameras? These are cameras set up on the jungle trails which recordany wildlife that is passing, anything over the size of a small
dog.
8/10/2019 Tiger Trail by Avril Flower
22/40
How do they operate? James continued. He was lookingat Janeswar with attention.
Janeswar was smiling under such a close watch.
They detect body heat from animals as they approach. This activates the cameras which record their passing. There is
also a dial that shows whether the camera has come into
operation, and it shows the time it was in action.Very ingenious, replied James, nodding. He was thinking
that Vanessa could make a map showing the positions of the
cameras; she could also make records showing which camera
had been called into action and at what time. She would be a
valuable part of the team.James, I have to tell you about another source of help.James looked at Janeswar expectantly.
There is a tea garden not far off and the Indian manager,Buhadur Kumar, has offered and given extra help with his
labour force whenever I have requested. He organised the
platform and the ladder up to the tree. He will be willing to
organise anything we ask to help us with our work.
That is excellent, we shall have to make mention of hishelp when we run the credits on our completed video. Why is
he being so helpful? James asked. When he was on another tea garden farther to the north,
he was called in to shoot a leopard and has regretted he had to
do it ever since. The leopard had killed one of his workers and
they were very afraid it would do so again. He realised the
animal was being denied its natural habitat by the humanpopulation encroachments, and wants to do his best to make
reparation.Oh, that is very sad. James said, I hope he doesnt have
to kill one of our tigers. There are more threats to their lives than Bahadur. We
have to be on our guard against poachers. There are two who
have been showing up regularly on our video cameras, so far
they havent realised they are being recorded.I will be pleased when Justin gets back on the job. He ismore experienced than I am, when co-operating with the forest
rangers, and the local police if necessary.
8/10/2019 Tiger Trail by Avril Flower
23/40
I understand he will make a good recovery and should beback here inside a week, said Janeswar. Das Gupta contactedme by cell phone. He believes Justins condition is not as badas we thought. I dont suppose you had time to exchangemobile numbers before he rushed off to hospital.
That is good! Now I will get my wife and myself ready togo round the jungle tracks with you, while you show us the
positioning of the cameras.Ill be ready, Janeswar said. When James told Vanessa that they were going out to look
at the cameras, she was excited about the whole idea of her
involvement with the enterprise.Have I got the right clothes? she asked. You look fine. Whatever you wear will be adequate for
the jungle. It was hot and steamy as they set off. The trails were not
obvious to Vanessa, who had only walked on country lanes
that were not far off city streets. Janeswar led the way and
James brought up the rear, so Vanessa was safely between
them. The vegetation was varied, sometimes dense, breakingout into a clearing every now and again.
Vanessa was surprised when she was shown wild bananas;
they looked edible but were full of black seeds.
The trail wound round big stands of trees and occasionally
they could see the river through the rushes and long grasses on
the river banks.
There were many types of tropical flowers to be seen, hardly any she had seen before. Thats where the tigers havebeen sighted. They were walking through the shallow waternear the river bank. Janeswar whispered, as he pointed.
You will have to think where you are going to positionyour cameras if you want to get pictures of the female and her
three cubs, he continued.Suddenly a hornbill flapped heavily across the clearing to
land high up in a tree, then thrust its beak into a hole in thedried mud, which had previously been packed round the tree
hollow by the birds. The hornbill was feeding its mate, who
was caring for their chicks. They were well hidden. Vanessa
8/10/2019 Tiger Trail by Avril Flower
24/40
was startled by the unexpected noisy interruption of their
stealthy progress.
James noted where the best sites for hides to be
established, while Vanessa made a rough map of the positions
of the cameras. She had only a notebook and a biro, which
soon made runny marks and smudges, but she persevered.
Janeswar made a useful suggestion to Vanessa.
When Justin is back with the helicopter, it would be agood idea if you talk to the helicopter pilot and organise a trip,
so you can photograph the camera sites from the air. You can
then position them on the map. That will enable us to visualise
the set up. I will be with you in the helicopter and will pointout where they are. That is clever thinking, Vanessa agreed. I have never
flown in a helicopter, and I forgot we had one.She had had an introduction to what might be described as
the coalface of the enterprise.
Goodness, Vanessa thought, a helicopter! Its going to be difficult to get good shots of the tiger and
her cubs without going up in the trees, James observed. Iwonder what ideas Justin has? He was here only a few days
before he had his heart trouble. He shouldnt have been doingall that lifting, there was plenty of help available.
Yes, said Vanessa. Rememberwhat Janeswar said aboutthe help coming from Bahadur Kumar? He should have used
that.
Never mind, he seems to have pulled through all right, ifhe is coming back so early. You have settled in now, are youfeeling better?
Yes thank you, but it is allvery primitive, I was glad tofind a toilet seat. One thing does puzzle me. The legs of our
camp beds have little saucer like things resting underneath
them. Why is that? They are filled with oil. They are to stop the ants from
crawling up and getting into bed with us. Happy now?Yes, but Im a bit apprehensive about what we are goingto eat tonight!
8/10/2019 Tiger Trail by Avril Flower
25/40
Well, there is a cook. He will make you an easy meal ifyou like.
I would like a boiled egg and some bread, if that ispossible.
Ill speak to Janeswar, he will arrange it for you. Jamesbent and kissed her, worried that she looked so pale.
Janeswar spoke to the cook, and later that evening they
were called to dinner. There was curry and rice for the men,
who were having a beer prior to their evening meal. Vanessa
was sipping a lemon drink, when the parniwallahbrought her
meal out on a tray. He spoke to Janeswar.
Memsahib, jildi karo, unda bight jaeger. What does that mean? asked Vanessa.Janeswar laughed. He said you must hurry, or your egg
will sit down.Oh dear, that would never do, James said with a grin,
ushering Vanessa to the table.
When they had eaten, James asked Vanessa if she had had
enough.
I couldnt eat any more of that horrible bread, Vanessacomplained. Goodness knows where they got it from.
James gave a nod of agreement. The cook makes ithimself, he said. It all depends on the yeast. The cooks swopit around, each one hoping to make the best bread. Of course it
all depends on the quality of the flour too. If it is stale, or
mouldy, the taste is peculiar. Perhaps when we go shopping,
we will get some new yeast. After a restless night, Vanessa got up early, and took oneof the chairs out into the compound.
She was writing a letter to her parents, reassuring them that
she had arrived safely.
It was a great spot she had chosen. She was sitting under
the shade of a beautiful tree. The shelter of its branches made it
cooler than sitting in direct sunshine, even though it was early
morning. She gazed at the tree, admiring the shape of itsbranches, while smelling the perfume of its flowers. Suddenly,
the branch which she was watching moved.

In surprise, she jumped up, pens and papers flying, as she
dashed away.
The cooks helper was putting dishes on the table, readyfor breakfast.
Snake! Snake! Vanessa cried, pointing to the tree.Sap? asked Fagu. He went over to the tree, and then went
back to the cookhouse. He returned, carrying a long pole with
a fork at its end. He put the fork over the snakes neck, justwhere its head was starting. Holding the snake high in the air,
he suddenly whipped the long pole. The velocity of the
movement cracked the snake in the air causing its back to
break. When it hit the ground it was dead. He showed its bodyto Vanessa and returned to the cookhouse.
James appeared, looking tousled.
Whats all the excitement? he asked.I saw a snake! Vanessa said.Im not surprised, there are a lot of them about. James
wandered off to the toilet.
Later, when Vanessa told Janeswar about it, he nodded.
I saw it, he agreed. Fagu was showing it to the cookbefore putting it in the rubbish. You were lucky. It was a
banded krite, very poisonous!Vanessa shivered in the hot sun.
You have had a shock, Janeswar observed, Ill ask thecook to make you some tea.
That would be nice, thank you Janeswar.
She went back to her seat under the tree, having firstinspected the branches carefully.
Some minutes later, Janeswar appeared, carrying a tray
with tea things arrayed on it. There was even a silver teapot.
Will you have a cup with me? Vanessa asked.I would like to, Janeswar replied. He leaned against the
tree, partially sitting on one of the lower branches.
Vanessa lifted the tea pot, it was surprisingly heavy. She
poured out tea, but nothing came out of the spout. She lookedin the pot, it was full of tea. She gazed at Janeswar in dismay.
He burst out laughing.

Chapter 3
It was a surprise for James and Vanessa, but a nice one, when
Justin arrived, now accompanied by Sushayla. They were
slightly astonished that she appeared to be Indian, but she was
immediately accepted as a welcome addition to the team.
Vanessa was particularly pleased to have another female, as up
until now, the team had been an all male establishment.
All of the work James and Janeswar had done with theinfra-red cameras, and the beginnings of Vanessas map, wereapproved by Justin. He wanted two of the cameras to be used
during daylight hours. Vanessa was shown the workings of the
video cameras, with their zoom lenses. She was detailed with
James to one of the cameras, which was safely positioned high
in a tree, overlooking the rivers edge. The first thing she hadto overcome was climbing up the ladder, made up from long
bamboos.
Do you realise this is the first date we have had, byourselves? We havent been alone since our honeymoon?Vanessa remarked when they reached the platform. She was
standing, rather shakily, holding on to the side bars.
I know you wouldnt have believed me if I had suggestedthis in London, replied James. However we have to keep our
voices down, if we expect to record any wild animals. Shouldyou see anything interesting, dont hesitate to record it. Allthese kind of shots can be entertaining to the armchair public,
of which, incidentally, you were one, only a week ago.Vanessa couldnt help a wry smile at that remark. Here
they were sitting near the top of a high tree, while appreciating
the view of the jungle around them, which they had to ignore.
Later on, Janeswar came complaining about the flies.
The pestilential flies are not such a nuisance on ourvideotape. I also think we should advise the police about this
development, Janeswar continued worriedly. Im sure theyshould know about the damage done to the cameras.

While Janeswar and Justin were busy looking at the tiger
tracks, Vanessa was having a panicky feeling at being at such a
height, as they swayed with a gentle breeze, high up in the tree.
She realised James had begun filming something on the
riverbank, so she checked with her binoculars to see a herd of
water buffalo, their hides black and shiny in the sun. They
started wading down the river. When they were immersed,
they had just their noses, ears, and horns above the water, as
they enjoyed a cooling swim. They were too big a handful for
the female tiger. James told her that water buffalo, when
attacked, formed a circle with the calves in the middle. He had
seen this on a documentary about India.
Meanwhile, back at the camp, Sushayla had arranged a
temporary clinic in the dining area, with the judicious use of
screens in a corner. Then she called in the cook, and the
parniwallah, in order to examine their general health and well
being. Justin approved of her idea. He had not given a thought
about the servants who were looking after the running of the
camp. Of course these people came in daily contact with theteam, and their health needed to be looked after.
Justin was not exempt from the examination and her
ministrations. He gave himself over to her care with pleasure.
He thought the way she stroked his hand while taking his pulse
was not entirely professional.
James and Vanessa had missed out on the examination,
and Janeswar was also out looking at the infra-red cameras. When they all came in they noticed there was a different
attitude in the camp. Sushayla had made a big impression on
everyone. Most of the camp had noticed the attraction
developing between Justin and Sushayla, and all were
watching with interest.
Janeswar had some exciting news. One of the cameras had
switched on to record a tiger moving through, and it appeared
to be a big male, but not related to the female and her cubs, hehoped.
Are you sure? asked Justin.

Come and look for yourself. Janeswar set up the screenand they all gathered around. The picture showed a most
beautiful animal in his glorious coat.
Yes, that is definitely a magnificent male, agreed Justin, but we could be in big trouble if he finds the cubs. He is agreater threat to them than the poachers are, and I dont thinkhe is their father. He will kill them if he finds them.
What shall we do about it? queried James. There is nothing we can do, except keep our fingers
crossed, Justin answered.Sushayla appeared around her screen.
Never mind about your tiger, for the moment. You threeare not to escape your medical check-up. Smiling at Vanessashe continued, I should like to see you first. Laughing, shebeckoned Vanessa to follow her.
When they had completed the examination Sushayla asked
Vanessa how long she had been married for.
Only for a month, as yet. Vanessa was embarrassed to bequestioned.
I suppose you are taking precautions? This is not the placeto be starting babies.
Yes, said Vanessa, blushing scarlet, but why do youask?
It is all part of your medical history, but dont you worry, this is all confidential. You are in the best of health, nothing to
worry about. Im not just being curious. If we were in a city
your medical records would all be on line, seeing we are not, Ihave to ask.James and Janeswar were both passed fit, then Vanessa
and James were warned to use their mosquito nets and not to
forget to take their malaria prophylactics.
Then Sushayla told them to stand in a line. She recalled the
cook and his assistant as well.
I am going to give you all a dose to prevent you from
being infected by worms, she announced in both languages. She waved a big bottle of medicine and produced some plastic
spoons.
Oh no! Vanessa cried, thinking of her upset stomach.

The men submitted with looks of distaste, but all took the
jalopstaunchly.
Do I have to? Vanessa was veryunwilling, but Sushaylawas adamant.
I take it, everyone else has had it, you need it, especiallyas you are going into the jungle. There are little worms that go
inside you through the soles of your feet, and then they go to
your lungs. You cough and swallow, and then they are in your
intestines. From there they go through your body, perhaps to
your brain. Take this! She held out a spoon.Feeling how she did as a child, Vanessa did as she was
told. That is better. Now you wont get lung worm, roundworms, tape worms, or thread worms this month. I will have to
medicate everyone again on the first of next month.Sushayla had not lived with Europeans before and was
astonished with the easy familiarity they treated their servants.
She was used to having an undefined separation between
menials and her family. She thought this was a welcome step,
but also realised she would have to change her attitude anddemeanour to suit the relaxed, yet polite, behaviour the rest of
the management had.
Her mother had been very strict when dealing with their
servants, they had to know their place, and keep in it.
However, she found her relations with Justin were
becoming more than amiable. James and Vanessa were
definitely a pair, and it would be only natural if she and Justinwere also linked in that way.
Later on Sushayla was sitting on her bed considering what
she had done with her life. She had been satisfied with her
position at the hospital until she had met Justin. Her feelings
for him had put her life into turmoil. Her days had been in a
rut, going to work at all hours at the hospital, then coming
home to her mother who was loving, but less than
inspirational. Her mothers education had been minimal.Though loved, her mother had recently passed away, leaving
her alone.

All her school friends were now married to husbands who
had been arranged for them, and were unavailable to go out, or
even have a gossip evening. Justin had been like a wakeup call,
and now she had broken all her old ties. Had she done the right
thing, she mused. Justin was not married, and as far as she
could ascertain, he had no other holds on his affection in the
offing. She wondered if he would consider her as a suitable life
partner? Sushayla realised she was inexperienced in sexual
relations and felt inadequate in handling these surging
emotions. However, she was happy now she had made the
break and her life had taken a drastic change. She would like to
be shown what Vanessa was embarking on. She was sure theycould work together.
She also felt she had something to offer Vanessa, as she
had the advantage of being fluent in Hindustani, if it were
needed.
Janeswar was up and about early next morning. He wanted
Justin to accompany him when he went on his rounds of the
infra-red cameras, in case the big male tiger was about.
Although he understood the tiger would be more wary ofmeeting him, than the other way round. They approached
cautiously, but there was no sign of the tiger. Yet, one of the
cameras had been called into operation, and another had been
smashed, certainly not by the tiger.
I think the poachers are about, Justin. They have smashedthe camera, but we still have evidence on the other one, when
it was called into operation. The ground is all trampled here, they must have been here quite a while. We had better get back to the camp, Janeswar. We must
warn the others to be on the lookout. Those poachers carry
firearms. We will have to call in the forest rangers and see if they
can recognise anyone.Vanessa got her first trip in the helicopter.
Mike Hudson, the helicopter pilot, had dropped off somesupplies which they had been waiting for. He was blond,
plump, and slightly bald, but charming. He was having a cup

of coffee in the eating area, when Vanessa came up to him,
carrying her map.
Good morning! Would you take me up to look at the hide,Mike? I think my drawings are out of kilter. I would have a
better idea if I could see the place from up above.Sure! I would like to do something to help. You are rather
lonely out here arentyou?Oh, we get by. We are pretty busy with the cameras you
know. When they were up in the air Vanessa was astonished at
how thick the jungle was. All she could see was a sea of green.
After Mike had made about three or four turns, she was able torecognise three trees, keeping them in line with the river bank.
These big trees, along with the river, gave her the bearings she
needed on the ground. After they had landed, Vanessa was full
of praise.
Thank you very much, Mike. I did enjoy that. I feel it hasimproved my work a great deal.
Any time! he smiled. I dont often have the company of
a young lady to myself. She stood in the compound and waved to him as he started
up the engine to finish his journey to other outlying camps and
villages.
She was extremely pleased with the information she had
gained. Her rough sketch map could now be made into a work
which could be a reliable description of the area. As it had
turned out she had not needed Janeswars help.James had been in Tinsukia getting more petrol for theLand Rover. Their supply of gallon cans had been running
low.
Was that Mike with the helicopter? I heard one pass overhead when I was buying the petrol.
Yes, he took me up for a ride and I was able to get a goodview for my maps.
It was kind of him to take you up, it must have addedsome time to his journey. He didnt seem to mind. In fact he seemed pleased to do
it.

Harrumph. James wasnt sure what to think, having awife was an unsettling business. He wasnt sure how well hecould trust her.
Vanessa was feeling exhilarated by the adventure of her
trip. She joined the others for breakfast and was surprised that
they had come in with more interesting news.
James, you should have come with us, Janeswar called,as he was taking off his boots before entering the dining area.
I had to get petrol, you knew that when I dropped you off. What has happened?
Justin interposed, speaking more loudly than usual. He had
to take charge. The camera nearest to the kill has been smasheddeliberately. The other one recorded shapes of two men. They
were definitely the poachers. We have moved the cameras into
more secluded areas. I brought the tapes back showing the two
miscreants. We will have a proper look at it after we have had
breakfast. They had eggs on toast for breakfast. The toast wasnt too
bad, as the cook was trying different yeast. There was alsopopped rice, similar to rice bubbles. The rice had been placed
in heated sand, which was left in the sun.
Vanessa particularly liked rice done this way, after the
sand had been sieved away.
The coffee was tinned. It was a special brand in a green
tin. The milk was powdered, mixed with boiled water. The
cows were most likely to have disease, as they were notinoculated or cared for in any way. They all had a second cup
of coffee before they started work.
Thanks for getting the petrol, James. Justin said. Imthinking about getting extra transport.
What will you get? Janeswar asked. He was interested incars. A Hindustan would be good for the territory.
Yes, I was thinking about a Morris Oxford, Justin agreed.
Ill only buy a second hand one, though.Vanessa was finally able to talk about her helicopter trip.
Everyone seemed interested, and congratulated her on her

work. While Janeswar was putting on his boots, he gave her a
smile.
You didnt need me after all.Mike was very good and I didnt feel frightened. It was
your good idea that put me on the right track. I would have
liked you to be there, but you werent around at the time. She started to gather up the plates for Fagu to take away to
wash. She waved to Janeswar as he departed.
----------------------------------------
Two somnolent figures were sprawled under a tree deep in
the jungle. According to Jodrajs instructions they had foundwhat the line men had called the tiger tree.
God knows why they want it, Jerah thought to himself.
The smell around it was terrible. They had smashed the
camera with great difficulty, as neither of them had brought an
implement. They had to use a tree branch.
Chung woke up after a grunt and a snore. When do wego?
Who knows? We were told to go to the corner of theTinsukia road as soon as it is dark. Then Jodraj will give us a
meal and something else.Chung slipped back into sleep, while Jerah continued to
watch the trees around them.

Chapter 4
The following day Janeswar and Justin set off again to
examine the area where the big male had been recorded. When
they reached the place, it was apparent that the poachers had
decimated the camera once more, so that their activities could
not be shown on tape, or their identities be discovered.
Justin was devastated by the destruction that had destroyed
the other camera. They werent just local thugs who did this. It must be an
international group of smugglers, with a power source at the
top. They have obviously trashed the camera on purpose. They looked for a place to install the replacement camera
where it would be better concealed, and not so easily smashed.
I think we should push through these small thornyclumps. If we fasten the camera to that big tree, then it will
possibly be safe from tampering, said Justin.I dont see me being able to do it. Im not used to finding
my way through the bush.Yes, it looks like the only way is for someone to slither
along on his stomach, while paying out a long cord attached to
the camera. Afterwards the cord can be pulled with the camera
attached to it. Then we will have to fasten it to the tree. I will
do that if you like, Justin? Janeswar volunteered this with anironic grin on his face.Justin gave a laugh, and nodded his head in agreement.
Okay, he said, it does seem to be the answer. Thoughwhen you are stretched out on your stomach like a snake, I
hope you dont meet one!You would think it a big joke if I did meet one, Janeswar
laughed, as Justin attached some twine to his belt. They fixed
up the replacement camera and then continued their rounds ofthe other cameras.
After a good breakfast, Vanessa and James set off to the
spot they had been assigned, up in the tree overlooking the

river. The morning was overcast and humid, by the time they
reached their eyrie. Vanessa was not in a good mood, as she
was sweating profusely from the climb.
I hope we see something interesting today. It is boringsitting here. Dont get me wrong, I like being here with you,James.
If you dont keep quiet, we wont see anything! snappedJames, who was suffering from the heat as much as she was.
This was the first time he had spoken to her like that, and
Vanessa looked at him with surprise. She was wondering what
she had let herself in for.
Perhaps he wasnt as charming as she had thought. It is said that every marriage is a gamble. Perhaps Imseeing his true character now; this thought passed through her
mind as she sat quietly, hugging her knees.
Im sorry Van, James said, but Im worried about thatbig tiger. He might spoil our whole project.
Oh, I thought you might be getting at me, she croaked, almost in a whisper. She then lay back to make the most of her
rest time, while James sat forward, hunched over the camera,as he scanned the river bank. The female tiger and her cubs
had last been seen in that direction.
Vanessa was feeling decidedly uncomfortable, as she was
lying on knobbly bamboo. She gazed at the foliage above,
seeing only chinks of sky. She was wearing her green outfit.
She had had to wash it under cold tap water. James had said
she should cover her upper arms when they went outanywhere, but not in the jungle, thankfully.
As she lay on her back, she wondered what she would be
doing this Saturday, if she were at home. It was late spring or
early summer there now. The weather would be lovely and
new fashions would have come into the shops. Her parents had
intended to go on a cruise around the Med. and she had been
going with them. She pushed her fingers through her hair,
while examining the split ends. Her hair was lank and dull, she thought, no hope of a
colour rinse here.

It was all so quiet; she missed having the radio constantly
in the background.
Vanessa suddenly became aware that the branches on the
far side of the river were shaking, and there was no breeze to
account for the activity. She grabbed James arm to draw hisattention to the movement, and he swung the camera on the
area.
Just look at that, Vanessa, even you can see that troupe ofmonkeys. Ive got the tape running, this will be an interestingshot. You take over the camera.
I can see them now. They seem so close in the camera
slot. It looks like a family on the move. I can see one, no two, mothers with their babies holding tightly on to their backs.I should have woken you earlier this morning. I heard
their whooping cries in the distance, just as dawn was
breaking.Next time, wake me please James. You are used to their
sounds. Last night, before I fell asleep, there was some animal
howling, but I didnt want to wake you up.
That would have been a fekir, its a type of fox. Whenthey lead the jackals, people are scared of them. The villagers
get out of bed and cross their shoes over, and turn them upside
down. Dont ask me why they do it, to turn away ill luck orsomething.
That must be really frightening.Any time, just give me a shake. Im a light sleeper,
particularly when in camp. Vanessa nodded. You would be happier if you knew what it was, crying inthe night. If you heard the sound of a whole pack of jackals
calling, it would give you the shivers up your spine. They
sound like babies in torment. It is especially frightening if you
dontknow what it is out there. The troupe of langur monkeys disappeared as quickly as
they had arrived, but James was pleased with the footage he
had recorded. These shots of animals in their natural habitat are always
much more interesting than when they are in a zoo, heremarked.
8/10/2019 Tiger Trail by Avril Flower
39/40
It was exciting to see them. They seemed terriblyconfident, as they moved so quickly through the trees. It made
sitting up in this tree for all that time worthwhile.Come on Vanessa, I will recover the tapes from the
camera as you go down the ladder. When they reached the ground, they pulled the ladder back
up into the tree with a loop of rope hitched round a branch
higher up.
That should keep the camera safe, said James, as hecarefully concealed the rope between the leaves.
They walked quickly back to camp, as they knew how
swiftly the night came in the tropics. In the camp, Sushayla had been busy, unpacking the rest of
their medical supplies brought from Kolkata.
She had bought a book about snakes, leeches and various
insects, which all could be harmful. It included remedies for
the various poisons of these creatures. It would be a miracle if
the team did not have to use this knowledge. In her nursing
experience in Kolkata, she had not seen snake bite, or needed
the use of its serum necessary for treatment. This work hadbeen handled by a specialist department.
She had become aware of this threat while she was sitting
reading. She had been surprised by seeing a black rat snake as
it stretched stealthily past. The cook had seen it as well, but he
was not alarmed. He told her it was not harmful, and was
probably more scared than she was. She went back to reading
her book.A Land Rover was driven into the compound with a
flourish, a squeal of brakes, resulting in a spray of gravel,
Bahadur had arrived.
Kah hai, he called, to make his presence known. Heobviously knew his way around, and had been to the camp
previously to see Justin, before the advent of Sushayla.
Who are you? Sushayla was startled to see a stranger in
the camp. This man standing in front of her, offering his handwas extremely good looking. He was tall and strongly built,
with wavy dark hair. Bahadur introduced himself.

I am Bahadur Kumar, the manager of Greenlands TeaEstate, which is just behind your camp, but who are you? I
didnt realise there was such an attractive young lady in thiscamp. There was only one girl, said the servants, Vanessa, and
she was married and a bit aloof.Im in charge of the campshealth. I was looking after Justin in the hospital in Kolkata and
he recruited me. My name is Sushayla, she gave him thetraditional greeting.
He knew what he was about, Bahadur gave her a winningsmile, showing perfect teeth.
Its a big change for me, after working in a big city
hospital, to be on my own, out in the jungle. Sushayla wasfeeling embarrassed and hot, with such careful scrutiny beingdirected at her.
On the tea garden, which I manage, we have a smallhospital with a doctor in charge. You will be most welcome,
any time you need some help.Bahadur saw his chance to establish good relations with
Sushayla. There were no unattached, or seemingly available,
ladies in the district. The social activities were confined tovisiting each others bungalows for dinner and drinks. Ofcourse the single men had not all established their households,
as they were waiting for their parents to select their brides. If
they gave out invitations to dinner, sometimes the guests
would be eating off their own crockery, as it was swopped
around amongst the servants.
Saturday night was club night. There was tennis at theclub, and films in the evening, but the few women who
attended were all married and carefully watched over, by their
husbands. The bachelors would meet each other for drinks,
which would carry on until the early hours of the morning.
Luckily, they had drivers to get them home; sometimes
travelling long distances on the loose gravel roads.
I have come to advise Justin that a big male tiger has been
seen in the area. My garden workers saw him, while they weregetting firewood for their cooking, Bahadur informedSushayla.
