Messages from Teachers to 5th GradersBy Niamh Lucas

Best of 5th GradeBy Sofia Hogue

This is the article about all the cool and best stuff of 5th grade. So be prepared for brags, lots of brags. We have the musical, Camp Timber-Lee, 1st for doughnuts at Tiger Times, and much more. This will VERY much make you want to be in 5th grade.

Camp Timber-leeIt’s the highlight of 5th grade, what all 5th graders wait for the whole year. You can make leather stuff, see farm animals, hold snakes, and have fun. You stay in a cabin with all girls or all boys. There are many rooms inside the cabin and you stay in one of them. Some kids say “It wasn’t fun” or something like that but they’re WRONG! The meals are amazing. Also you get to make s’mores and do night hike or wolf pack. It’s amazing there.

Doughnuts5th graders get doughnuts first at Tiger Times. They are soo yum-my. I mean really, does this need more explaining?

5th Grade MusicalThe 5th graders get to do the 5th grade musical. You get to play an instrument or sing or both. It’s cool to see all your friends on stage. (And sometimes you get to see kids make a mistake or purposely be really loud or something, it’s quite entertaining.) It’s really fun and you get a t-shirt!

Oldest KidsLastly, you are the oldest kids in the school! Which gives you new opportunities to do most of the cool things at Dewey. Also, did I mention that all the younger kids look up to YOU! Yes this is true, you’re officially the rulers of the school. Being the oldest kids is amazing! But you know the year after you´re in 5th grade you’re going to be the youngest in Middle school…

So now do you want to be in 5th grade? Of course you do! You’ve learned about all the amazing things about 5th grade, I can´t wait for you to become one of us!

Favorite Field Trips at DeweyBy Gus Dillow and Tommy Gavagan

Everybody loves field trips. Each year, teachers load up kids onto busses and take us to interesting places around Chicagoland (and East Troy). We decided to find out what the favorite field trips at Dewey are. We asked 27 fifth graders. Here are the results:

We were very surprised by the results; Timber-lee was obviously the biggest hit. Camp Timber-lee was at 70 percent of the votes while the closest runner up was Shedd Aquarium at only 12 per-cent. Finally, in third place there was a tie between the Wiz at ETHS, Lincoln Park Zoo, Chinese Acrobatics, Northeastern Uni-versity and the Botanical Garden.

During your time at Dewey, what was your favorite field trip?

Differences in NicholsBy JoJo Layden and Ashland Henson

Life at Nichols is way different than life at Dewey, for example, classes, backpacks, and supplies.

Nichols Middle School has 567 students and has grades 6th, 7th, and 8th. It’s one of 3 middle schools in Evanston. There are other schools in Evanston serving grades k through 8th: Bessie Rhodes, King Lab and a handful of private schools.

Recently, there were renovations made to the library, cafeteria, and they basically added a whole other wing to the school. But who really cares about that? Not me, and probably not you. So let’s get into the real interesting stuff, the differences between Nichols and Dewey:

StrangersFor starters, you’re coming into a completely different environment. Now you’re with a whole new group of people, from Washington and Lincoln Elementary Schools. So, you might be struggling to find your friends through a bunch of Washington kids. Or you might only have math class with a bunch of Lincoln kids, who might just be hanging out with their friends from Lincoln.

ClassesNo more Homerooms. Classes switch, so you have lots of different teachers and each class is about 45 minutes. At Dewey you have homerooms and you get to know all the kids in your classroom. By the end of the year you’re mostly all friends.

Speaking of classes, by 3rd period you might be getting a cramp from running to the 4th floor and then back down to the 1st floor. Or at the last minute you might need to go to the bathroom but then you realize it’s one minute until the bell rings for your next class. So now it’s race to the bell.

BackpacksDid you know that the backpack weight at Nichols is a lot heavier than the average Dewey backpack? We did some research, and found that one backpack with everything you need is about, 16 pounds at Nichols. At Dewey, your backpack with your lunch, homework, assignment notebook, and maybe a book, all together weighs 5 pounds. So, if you think your backpack is heavy now, just wait.

GymAt Dewey, during gym you’re with your friends and having so much fun. At Nichols there is no telling if you’re going to be with your friends. But the biggest difference is your clothes. There are uni-forms. So you have to go to the locker room and change out of your regular clothes. You have to be fast and you need to be prepared. If you lose your uniform or forget it at home, there are consequences. Oh, and don’t forget your deodorant. Believe it or not, it’s on the school supply list!

LunchRight now we have been focusing on the negative but why so dark? Let’s talk about the positives. At Dewey you get hot lunch or you bring your lunch, no other options available. At Nichols, you can do that and more. The cafeteria sells ice cream, chips, drinks, cook-ies, and more goodies. So, don’t be so sad. Who doesn’t like ice cream?

LockersNo more lockermates. What a relief right? Also, for birthdays, your friends might decorate your locker. It’s always fun to see your locker wrapped up like a present with pictures of all your favorite things.

Clubs & ExtracurricularThere are so many clubs and sports teams at Nichols. There’s Lit-erary Magazine Club, Yearbook Club, Chess Club, Startrek Club, Ceramics Club, Chorus, Band, Debate, Book Club, Volleyball, Soc-cer, Track, Basketball… The list goes on and on.

So as you can see there are so many differences between Nichols and Dewey. Some good, some bad. Either way, it’s going to happen some day. (For the 5th graders, it’ll happen next year!) And we’re all going to have to deal with it, one way or another.

our world

The Justin Wynn AwardBy Theo Kayaian and Matthew Clemson

Have you heard of Justin Wynn before? He was once a fourth grader just like everyone was or will be. But we’ll talk more about that later. Justin Wynn is also an award in Evanston. You might be wondering, who was Justin Wynn? Or what is Justin Wynn? Or who won Justin Wynn? We promise to answer all three questions if you keep reading.

Now we will answer the first question: Who was Justin Wynn? Justin Wynn was a fourth grader just like us. He went to Walker Elementary and then transferred to Lincoln. He also played foot-ball, soccer, and baseball. He died in a swimming pool accident. We met his sisters, Riian and Laura, and they said, “Even though he lived a short life, his values were that of a well-rounded individual. He had many great qualities… some of his qualities included out-standing leadership, citizenship, and sportsmanship.” His parents and friends created the Justin Wynn Award to remember and honor him. That is why the Justin Wynn Award honors fourth graders who have those qualities.

So what is the Justin Wynn Award? The Justin Wynn award started in 1991. Each year it honors two fourth graders from each of the twelve District 65 schools. The teachers and staff at the school choose them because they show the three qualities of leadership, citizenship, and sportsmanship. Ms. Wynn told us, “The mission of the Justin Wynn Fund is to celebrate and nurture youth leaders by helping them develop a deep sense of self and responsibility for improving our community.” Once you have been honored you con-tinue in Justin Wynn until you are a senior in high school.

The Justin Wynn Award is a lot bigger than just a trophy. It tries to teach Wynners how to be better leaders and how to help our com-munity. All the way through high school you do fun things with the rest of the Wynners like beach cleanups, park cleanups, and Wynners go to a camp called Camp Duncan each year in August. We heard some of the ETHS seniors talk about it and one of their

favorite things was going to camp. Wynners also help at the annual Justin Wynn Leadership Academy 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament. Justin’s sisters told us that their favorite thing is the annual awards brunch that recognizes the Wynners. They said, “We always have a great group of new Wynners, and it is so exciting to meet them every year.”

You might be wondering who the 2016 Wynners are from Dewey. We are really excited and proud about being the Justin Wynn recipients this year! We talked to some past Dewey Wynners: Maya Wallace, a sixth grader at Nichols, and her sister Julia Wallace, a sophomore at ETHS. We wondered what they thought about get-ting the award now that they are not at Dewey anymore. Julia told us, “It is helpful because it is another group of people you can bond with and it makes you feel like you can help people.” Maya said, “It gives you a good sense of people and a good sense of community.”

Justin’s sisters said they hope the new Wynners will “continue in the spirit of good sportsmanship, leadership and citizenship and continue to bring positive energy and new-found excitement to the group.”

We hope you now have a better sense of what this award really is because it is not just an award, it is actually a whole lot bigger. Portuguese Water DogsBy Mira Slayton

Portuguese Water Dogs have webbed feet and clear eye lids so that that they can see underwater. The Portuguese Water Dog is a hypoallergenic dog. So if you have allergies it is good for many families. And if you love the water you can have a fast dog beside you. Portuguese Water Dogs are black and white and have curly fur. Portuguese Water Dogs can grow spots as they get older and some-times they don’t stay the same color. They can grow black spots on white and white spots on black.

The Portuguese water dog has many talents including being a fast swimmer and seeing under water, and many other talents too. This is a dog that you can play with in water and they aren’t even that much work. So, if you are ever thinking of buying a dog, think of the adorable Portuguese Water Dog.

I have my own Welsh Springer Spaniel. They are adorable but a lot of work. My Welshie (that’s what we call them) is very active and they chose the most active one for us! Any dog needs much atten-tion. It needs food, energy (how much depends on the breed), love, grooming, and – most of the time – training. Welshies in particular need more attention and energy. That’s good for my family because my mom is here most of the day.

Training Tips

Welshies are easy to housebreak but regular training can be much harder. In fact, my dog is 1-year old and we are still taking her to lessons! This is probably because Welshies have a very short atten-tion span, and that means you need lots of good treats to help you. I recommend Zukes. They come in many flavors, such as chicken, peanut butter, salmon and some fruit flavors.

Do not yell or scream if you are training a Welshie. They will not listen if you do that. Instead, calmly say “no,” holding your hand out if they do something bad. Never chase a Welshie if it has any thing of yours. Firmly call it, don’t pry it out of their mouth, calmly and gently pull it out of their mouth while saying “drop” or “give.” Hopefully by 8 months or so your dog will be almost fully trained. By the way, a Welshie will not make a good guard dog. Instead of barking they will lick and snuggle the stranger!

Grooming and Physical Characteristics

A Welshie is a beautiful dog — they are also adorable! If a Welshie’s coat gets muddy the mud will dry and immediately fall off. My dog has 2 different colored eyes. It is uncommon in Welshies, but in other breeds it can be very common. Welshies have very sharp teeth. If you have a puppy, often you will find baby teeth on the ground. This is because they will lose teeth regularly, when they eat, when they play, and sometimes when they sleep. Welshies are very rare in the United States. Not many of them were brought from England where they were bred. (I recommend Fox Springers if you would like to buy a Welshie and cannot find one.) Welshies also have special fur on their underside called feathering. Young Welshies do not have feathers. A male Welshie is 18-19 inches; a female is 17-18 inches.

Agility

Welsh Springer Spaniels are very active: they love to swim, hunt, run, etc. People who like to hunt for birds call them “bird dogs.” They also call their breed Springers because they can jump very high. If you get a Welshie make sure their tails get docked, be-cause when they are hunting other animals may grab their tails. Welshies also love being on boats. If you like fishing, a Welshie is right for you.

I hope that after reading this article about an amazing animal, you will want one for your own. Fox River Spaniels is a great place to get your Welshie or Cocker Spaniel. DO NOT get your puppy from a puppy mill. Most puppy mills do not care if the puppies are sick, injured, or have disabilities. Thank you for taking your time to read this article.

Summer vacation is coming soon! We can’t wait! But admit it, you know it’s coming…. Being bored over summer vacation. When that time comes, here are some ways to prevent that from happening. (If you’re not going on vacation anywhere of course.)

1. Watch the Olympics on TV over summer: Not many people get bored while watching the Olympics. Here are some facts about it: • The city is Rio de Janeiro. • It is from Aug. 5th to Aug. 21st. • There will be 28 Olympics sports in all. Some of the sports are fencing and football (also known as soccer here).

2. Biking on trails. Here are some good trails: • Green Bay Trail: It runs along the Metra UP-North line. It starts in Wilmette and ends near the Ravinia Park Metra station. So you can go to one of the festivals there by bike. • Lakefront Trail: It runs next to Lakeshore Drive. It starts in the Edgewater district and it ends near 72nd street. 3. Go to a local park. • Penny Park: It’s a cool, wooden park and the only one in Evanston. • Dawes park: It has a bike path, a really cool duck pond, It’s right by the lake, just south of Northwestern University.

4. Watch a baseball game. You can either watch the White sox or the Cubs on TV or a stadium such as Wrigley Field or The U.S Cellular Field.

The Author VisitBy Zachary Cutter

Who liked the author visit? All of you? Wow! I didn’t know you liked it.

The author who came to District 65 was none other than Aaron Reynolds. Some of the books he wrote are Carnivores, Chicks and Salsa, President Squid and Creepy Carrots.

Aaron Reynolds talked about the story Nerdy Birdy. He wanted to be an author because he did not want a boss. Before he was an

author he was a actor. Aaron Reynolds is fun, funny, active, awe-some and full of energy.

Aaron Reynolds was born on June 4, 1970.

Aaron Reynold’s dad was in the Air Force so that meant he had to move places. He moved to Texas, Colorado, Florida, Okinawa, New Jersey, then he settled in Illinois.

Audition Tips

Now I’ve only been in one audition but I can offer you some advice.

Be yourself. The directors watching want to see you so that they can match you with a character that would be a good fit for you.

Make the directors laugh. The shows are usually supposed to be funny so the directors want someone who is funny.

You do you. This is kind of similar to the first one but I had to overstate my point, BE YOURSELF!!!!

Don’t get TOO nervous. Being nervous is natural, but calm yourself down so that you don’t go up with sweaty everything. Just calm down and say to yourself, “it’s all good.”

Don’t be anybody else (I’m running low on ways to overstate this.)

If you decide to do an audition you will start out in the waiting room doing (you guessed it) waiting. This part can take 0 minutes to 2 hours. Then, when you get called back, you will go into a room to do these weird poses and stuff then you will be sent to another room and told to get behind a chair. The backs of each chair will have a post-it on it saying what to act out. The director will say something along the lines of “ready, set, GO!” and you will start acting out whatever is on the chair. After 30 seconds the director will tell you to move over one chair and act out what that chair says, rinse and repeat.

If you get into callbacks you will do the same waiting game then go back into the same room (the chair room) and you will be handed a script and probably a partner. You will then go into yet another room and you will practice your scene. You will go back into the chair room and show your scene to several directors. When you are done, you will watch everybody else’s scene and then you will go home. If you get into a play, good for you!!! If you don’t, better luck next time.

Well I hope this gives you some knowledge about Mudlark, and I also hope it helps you survive auditions.

Mudlark Theater Company By Giles Gilbert Bartell

I bet most of you have heard of Mudlark Theater Company, but I’m positive you don’t know its full story.

Mudlark sometimes hosts half-day improv workshops (improv is acting without script, just making up things on the spot.) Mudlark also has classes right here at Dewey! The classes are after school on Friday for 3rd–5th graders. I can tell you from personal experience, that it’s REALLY fun.

I have done one camp and it was amazing! We made a play (it was super funny) called “Oh Captain, My Captain,” and it was really good. But I digress. They have camps like Sketch Comedy and Accents. For more information, visit Mudlark’s website at www.mudlarktheater.org.

Pandora’s Box

One of the shows in Mudlark’s spring season was “Pandora’s Box.” It was an original production about the angry Gods of Olympus giving a box full of “Anger, Hubris, Vanity, Jealousy, Greed, and Sorrow” to the humans. Now, I can’t fairly review this play because I was in it, so I will ask my friend Grant to review it.

Grant’s review: “It was very good because it was good.”

Grant should really consider a career in journalism. But anyways, Pandora teaches the humans a lesson using the box as leverage to sway them. I’d give it 50 out of 5 stars, but what can I say???

The Wizard Of Oz

The Wizard of Oz was great! I went on the 2nd night that they were showing it and it was amazing! The sound effects were VERY loud, es-pecially the Wicked Witch of the West saying, “I’M MELTING!!!!!!”

The play was similar to pretty much every book/movie/musical of “The Wizard of Oz.” The shadow puppets were ingenious and amazing. I’d give it 4 ¼ out of 5 stars.

I’m sad to say that these two were the only shows that I could see before I had to turn in this article, but I wanted to see more and some of them were sold out.

Vincent Van GoghBy Somil Bose

Have you ever heard of the famous artist Vincent Van Gogh? If not, have you seen the painting Starry Night? Well, Van Gogh painted it.

Vincent Van Gogh was born on March 30,1853 in Holland and died at the age of 37. He lived in 37 houses and in only one of them he felt like he was home — the yellow house in Arles, France. He liked it there so much that he painted 3 pictures of his bedroom in the yellow house — it’s good he found the yellow house. He only left because he got into a fight with his friend.

When Vincent Van Gogh was in the yellow house (during the fight) people think he chopped off his own ear, but that is not proven. Other people think Van Gogh’s friend chopped off his ear, but Van Gogh said he did it himself to protect his friend.

Before Vincent Van Gogh became an artist he tried out many jobs. He worked as an art dealer, taught at a boarding school, worked at a bookstore, and became a missionary before he realized he wanted to be a artist.

If you are interested in Vincent Van Gogh, the Art Institute of Chicago has a collection of his artwork. And the best thing is kids are free in the museum!

Don’t Eat Nutella Chocolate!By Wren Cohen and Brian Jones

Why you ask? Because Nutella is found to contain large amounts of palm oil. What is palm oil you ask? It is only obtained by cut-ting down the trees of the tropical forests. Would you like to live without those birds and monkeys and things that need the trees of the tropicals to survive. Are your favorite animals any of these?: Tigers, jaguars, monkeys, toucans, giant pythons, cheetahs, deer. You need to help us make signs to STOP Nutella’s factory. We hope you have agreed to stop eating Nutella for this little thing...

So sad. But so cute. WHAT THE WHAT!?

We all like jokes right? JOKE: There was a boulder. It crushed one can, two cans, and a toucan! Get it? Two can TOU can… ha ha ha!

“The System”By Charlie Kalil

Grinnell College has an interesting way of playing basketball. They normally score over 120 points a game, and they practically let the other team score! So read on to find more about Grinnell college basketball “the system.”

Grinnell College, “the system” is a really fast paced offence. They rely on 3-point shooting and their full court press defense. They have 6 rules that need to be applied to make the system, “the system!”

● 1. The first possible shot is the best shot, where 3-point shots are preferred over shorter shots!● 2. Shoot as many 3’s as possible! ● 3. In terms of defense, giving up an uncontested layup is better than a shot clock violation.● 4. Always double team the person with the ball.● 5. Every player should go for an offensive rebound except the shooter.● 6. Offensive rebounds should be sent back for a 3-pointer, not a shorter shot.

These rules should always be applied to make the system, “the sys-tem”! Another thing that needs to be applied is to always do a full court press. A full court press is when you don’t only defend the backcourt, you defend the whole court. Grinnell always scores over 90 points a game and when they put these rules in place, it became so effective! In 1989 a new coach joined Grinnell. Grinnell hadn’t had a win-ning season in 25 years! After learning the original system, he felt like he needed to change the system. He realized that the players who didn’t get playing time were quitting! So he made the system, a high scoring offense and an offense that includes many many play-ers in the system. Now it has been used for many years and many players have been successful under the system.

One player who was VERY successful was Jack Taylor. Jack Taylor was a player who was a 3-point specialist and scored a ton of points. He even has the record for most points in a game. He scored 138 points in a game. That is a record for any player in the history of college basketball! Jack Taylor tried to go to the NBA but because he was from a small school he didn’t get drafted. Jack Taylor’s suc-cess shows just how effective the system has been. The system is very effective and very unique. That is why it is very famous and has a lot of history. The system is different from other teams because most teams do a man on man. Basketball has gotten a lot of fame in Grinnell College because of “the system”!!!!!!

Farewell BoleynBy Leo Webster

The Boleyn ground is a soccer stadium in East London, England. Home to West Ham United (WHU), which is an English Premier League team. West Ham United have played at the Boleyn Ground for 112 years!!!! The Boleyn Ground is also commonly known as Upton Park because of the neighborhood it is in. At the end of this season West Ham will be moving to the Olympic Stadium and the Boleyn Ground will be knocked down. So read on to find out more about this amazing stadium.

HistoryThe Boleyn Ground opened in 1904. West Ham’s first game was against Millwall on September 1st. It had a crowd of 10,000 people, the majority of whom were rewarded as West Ham won 3-0. The Boleyn Ground got its name because of the house called Boleyn Castle that used to be in its location. That house was supposedly home to Anne Boleyn who was one of King Henry VIII’s eight wives. The ground has changed since 1904, especially after it had to be rebuilt because of the V-1 bomb that hit the ground and de-stroyed it during World War II.

Boleyn TodayThe current Boleyn ground was completed in 2001 following re-building work to convert it into an all-seater stadium. During this rebuilding work, 2 new stands were named after Bobby Moore and Sir Trevor Brooking who were two of West Hams famous players. The capacity is currently 36,000 people, and that is quite small for a soccer stadium in Europe. The Boleyn is famous for the noise of the crowd and how close the spectators are to the field. This is espe-cially true to the east side of the field where fans sit in the “Chicken Run” which is named after the small stand that used to be there.

FireBy Declan Boutross

On the 126th anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire, October 8, 1997, an announcement was made. The new Major League Soccer team assigned to Chicago would be called the Chicago Fire. Its first season would be in 1998.

As of the summer of 2006 the Fire play at Toyota Park in Bridgeview,IL. Before that, they used to play at Soldier Field. As of November 2015, the new head coach is Veljk Paunovic, the former coach of the Serbian Team who were FIFA U20 Champions 2015.

Some All-Stars from past Chicago Fire teams are Ante Razov, Frank Klopas, CJ Brown and Peter Nowak.

In their first league season in 1998, the Fire won the MLS Cup as well as the U.S. Open Cup. The Fire has also won the U.S Open in 2000, 2003 and 2006. The Fire have made it to the MLS Cup Playoffs in every year of their existence except for 6 years. Too bad it looks like this may not be their year! ! Hoping that next year is their year! Go Fire!

The Squirt Evanston Hockey Team...Wins the Championship!!By Ari Sushinski

My team, the Evanston Wildkits won the championship in hockey. I support my hockey team because they are not only teammates, they also are great friends of mine. My team played v’s the Kenosha Komets. I think they were the best team we ever played because the game was equal. We were playing in the Centennial Stadium in Highland Park. The reason we got to the championship was be-cause I, Ari Sushinski, scored the winning goal in a shoot out. My best friend Freddie was good. I think his wicked shots got us to win the championship! My coach’s name was Coach Chris. I thought that he was the best coach I ever had because he taught us the right stuff to learn and he was very funny! My friend Lena was the tallest person on the team. She knocked a lot of kids down. I think the MVP was Freddie because without his shots we would have lost more games than usual. I felt very happy because it made me want to try harder to win more championships.

Why Farewell?West ham played their last game at the Boleyn against Manches-ter United on May 10th 2016. They will be moving 2 miles away to the Olympic Stadium. The amount of money that has been spent on the Olympic Stadium to convert it to a soccer stadium is $400,000,000. The Olympic Stadium can hold 60,000 people instead of 36,000 people so the soccer club can make much more money. The new stadium is also a better location for the fans. If you were wondering if the team can sell all 60,000 tickets to the new ground, they already have!!

Some Fun Boleyn Facts: • The Boleyn has thrilled many people since the East London club was formed in 1900 • The record attendance was 42,322 people for a match against Tottenham Hotspur in October 1970. The score was 2-2. • West Ham changed their name from Thames Ironworks to West Ham • West Ham United moved to the stadium now known as the Boleyn Ground for the start of the 1904/05 season • Last game on May 10th 2016

World’s Tallest Buildings — Article #3 By Robert Razdolsky

Robert here for the third and final article on skyscrapers. In this ar-ticle we will talk about the tallest buildings in the WORLD!! It has been fun, but it is the end. Note: in this article some of the towers we talk about are ideas waiting to be built. The tallest buildings in the world are amazing: • The 3rd tallest building in the world is the Makkah Royal Clock Tower. Can you believe it, a clock! It was built in 2012, and is 1,972 feet tall. It is located in Saudi Arabia. • The 2nd tallest building today is the Shanghai Tower. It was built in 2014. It is 2,073 feet tall. It passed the 2,000 foot mark, which only the tallest buildings in the world have passed. • The 1st tallest building is (drumroll, please!) the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It was built in 2010 and is 2,717 feet tall!

There are also two skyscrapers in concept phase that are expected to compete with the world’s tallest buildings: • The 2nd tallest building still in the concept phase of con- struction is the Signature Tower in Jakarta, Indonesia. It is expected to be completed in 2020, with a height of 2,093 feet. • The 1st tallest building still in the concept phase is the Kingdom Tower in Saudi Arabia. It is planned to be com- pleted in 2018. It will be 3,281 feet tall!

Well, now we say goodbye to my Tiger Times series on World Sky-scrapers. I hope you enjoyed it! I will leave you with pictures of the towers talked about in this article.

Howdy guys. We are here to tell you a story of how two pioneer girls named Hattie Fammer and Violet Fammer made it on the Westward Expansion! These are the diary entries they wrote on the trip.

Hi! I am Hattie Fammer. I am here on the trail playing with my new dog, Maddie. Me and my twin sister have been on the trail for about a week. Pa and Ma are trying to make the trip fun for us, but it is not working well. It feels like we do all the work. We are going to stop for the night soon. We will have to get wood for the fire and have to watch our little sisters, Mae (1 year old) and Liv (6 years old). Now we have to go to bed and today was awesome!

Hi! I am Violet Fammer. Life out in the prairies is hard. The food will become scarce in about a few weeks. My legs are tired from walking so long. I have not gotten much rest. I hope I get some rest soon.

Ma is making good food: cornbread with honey and salted ham. Her food always makes me hungry for more food. Pa is hunting for deer and elk. I am excited for dinner, but before I eat, I must go outside and feed the horses. I have to go to bed. Bye!

Hattie here. It is about three weeks since we left Independence, MO. We can see Chimney Rock over the rising sun. It’s four o’clock, sadly, that is the time that we have to wake up to feed the cows, and ugh, pick up buffalo dung. It’s a terrible job but it’s what we have to do. Liv and Mae are not having the best time in the world, which we all thought we would. We have to walk next to the wagon. And oh, how my legs hurt so very much. I have to wear a bonnet, to protect my face from the sun. We are at Chim-ney Rock and Violet and I are trying our best to get to the top. We were halfway up when Pa called us down to get food, and put Mae to bed. When we were done we were asleep too!

The rain is falling down

There is lightning and it stings

A rainbow appears and children play

Hello again, or I could say Violet is here! The last time I talked to you, was when we had just started. I was tired and so were my siblings. Mae keeps saying “woooow” every time we see an amaz-ing sight. Now I am so excited to see everything, and I am not that tired in my opinion. Walking out of the wagon is fun! We have already reached Independence Rock, and our whole family signed the rock—Fammer—our last name. We are going to South Pass to make a big decision. California or Oregon? Fortunately our family chose Portland, Oregon.

And that, you see, is the life on the trail. These two girls went on a 4-6 month journey, to their new home!

The Spotlight Hits Dewey School on Stage!By Leela Wittenberg Trubowitz

Meet Rob and Frank, professionals in the world of acting! You step into the theater, the curtains open, and you want to see the show.... But let’s zoom back and learn a little first.

Why did you first get interested in acting?

ROB: My church did a production of Oklahoma which my sister was in. It really inspired me.

FRANK: I loved stories, and decided it would be fun to pretend that I was characters inside them!

How did you meet?

FRANK: I was on tour.

ROB: I had friends acting in the play with Frank, so we met each other after the show one night.

When did you act in your first play or musical?

FRANK: I was 10 when I played in Oliver as the character Oliver.

What kinds of Productions have you been in? (names, genres)

Mainly musicals (Rob did Les Miserables and Frank did Miss Sai-gon). For both Rob and Frank, a lot was done on Broadway or on tour.

Where have you acted before?

On Broadway and Off-Broadway. Rob went on tour to all 50 states IN THE USA! Frank was also on tour a lot, but didn’t travel to them all like Rob.

Do you wish to inspire your daughters to act, too?

We wish to inspire them to follow their dreams just like us.

Do you both STILL act?

FRANK: No.

ROB: My last performance was about a year ago. Now I’m more of a director.

What are some of your favorite hobbies besides acting?

We like playing with our daughters, playing the piano, reading, go-ing out to movies with each other, we go out to play tennis some-times, ETC..............

Have you ever had any other jobs that don’t take place on stage?

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES! But for Rob, mostly still in the theater, like directing.

What do you think of the education your daughters are getting at Dewey?

We think it’s absolutely terrific!

If everyone had them, what would be the five biggest highlights of your life — happy or sad?

ROB: When our daughters first came to our house, when we got married, when we adopted our daughters, when I had my first solo song in a musical, my cousin dying when I was 10, and buying the house.

FRANK: When our daughters first came to our house, when we married, when we adopted our daughters, when I opened the show Miss Saigon, when I graduated school, and when my brother died when I was 12.

Can you both share a favorite memory as a dad? May you?

ROB: Yes. Mine is probably when our daughters first came to our house, and it was a bit late at night, so when they went to bed, it was kind of cold, and Lamiya was a bit scared, so I remember her coming to me and cuddling up with me and falling asleep.

FRANK: Yes, I can also. Mine is probably at Disney World this past year, when me, Lamiya, Rob and Christina were all on a roller coaster called EXPEDITION EVEREST.

What do your daughters think of your career? Do they like the main idea of it?

Yes, we’re sure they like it!

Frank, I hear that you now work somewhere else. Where? How’s that like?

FRANK: Yes, Leela, you are right. I now work at a foundation, where I give money for art, and youth and family programs.

What do you suppose your DOG thinks of mostly?

Food, family…….. And going outside.

Recognize these two men? Well, look for them in the play you are about to watch, or around our very own Dewey Elementary School.

Interviewing a Poet, Rachel Jamison WebsterBy Sylvia Wallace

What inspired you to be a poet? and why?

When I was young, I used to observe many beautiful things in the world and I wanted to describe and remember them.

Where did you grow up?

A small town in Ohio called Madison.

When you were growing up, did you want to be a poet? If not, what did you want to be?

I wanted to be an actor, a writer, and a teacher. Later I realized I had too much stage fright to be an actor. And then I started to write short stories. I always wanted to use my imagination and teach people.

What is some advice that you would give to people that want to be writers?

Pay attention to the way you see things and honor that. Only you can write your poems and stories. Keep a notebook of ideas and read lots of books.

Which poets did you like? Which poets do you like now?

I liked Walt Whitman, Mary Oliver, and Naomi Shihab Nye when I was young. I still like them and many, many others like Anne Carson, William Blake, and Laura Kasischke.

What was the first poem you wrote? Can you recite it to me? I don’t remember the poem well enough to recite it, but I know it was about my cat.

What was the first book you published?

“September”

What do you like to write about?

I like to write about events from my own life and ancestors and people from the past.

Have you ever been interviewed?

Yes, but this is a favorite interview because I am talking to a true poet.

What was another time you were interviewed?

I have been interviewed at the Evanston Public Library, and in journals and magazines. It’s fun to share my work.

Sylvia, you are a very gifted poet. Will you share your first poem with us?

Ok. Here it is about blind Mary (from the Laura Ingalls Wilder books) outside.

Prairie

Oh, prairie wide and blue

It’s almost like I see you.

Wide as the sky, deep as the sea,

It’s almost like you see me!

Meet Ms. Medina By Adela Bautista

As many of you know, Ms. Medina is an awesome fifth grade teacher. She teaches in Room 203 and I am one of her students. As is the case of many other teachers, all the information you know is whether he or she is an excellent teacher, but the rest of the infor-mation is completely unknown. But not with Ms. Medina! Now you will know some information about her and be prepared to be in her class next year! So, what are we waiting for? As Ms. Medina says, “Let’s get the show on the road”.

Sra. Medina was born in Chicago at the Chicago Frank Cuneo Hospital. Her family is from Puerto Rico. Her favorite memory as a child was spending summers in Puerto Rico. She has 3 sib-lings: one brother, one half sister and one stepsister. Her favorite memory as an adult is being a mother. And her favorite memory as a teacher was Camp Timber-lee. If she could go anywhere in the world, she said she would go to the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador.

Her favorite part about being a teacher is, “Developing that teach-er-student relationship and motivating students to learn.” Now, her LEAST favorite part about being a teacher is the state assess-ments, because she has to administer.

This next part is very important for those of you who will be in her class in the future. I asked her what advice could she give fu-ture students and she said, “Prepare to have fun learning. Prepare to work hard. Organization is very important in 5th grade.”

Here’s some more information about her. She has a male cat called Minolo. Her most embarrassing moment was rushing into the bathroom at McDonald’s, not realizing she was in the men’s room. If she hadn’t become a teacher she would have become a psychologist, lawyer or a chef. Most likely a chef because she says she’s obsessed with food.

People that have inspired Sra. Medina are Mother Teresa for the sacrifices she has made and Audrey Hepburn, a British actress.

Some Of Her Favorite Things: • Books: The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck (great author) and I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai (inspirational and emotional story) • Quote: “Early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise” Benjamin Franklin • Song: Ave Maria by Schubert • Food: Fried Chicken with Waffles and syrup (yum!) • Movie: Gone with The Wind (1939 movie)

Ms. Medina went to St. Mary’s School in Chicago and in her free time she likes researching new recipes, biking and reading a good book. Her pet peeves are (don’t ever do these things in front of her or else…) 1. Long Nails and 2. People who eat with their mouths open. 3. People who don’t look at you in the eye. So, I repeat, don’t ever, ever do these things in front of her.

This next section talks about what to expect and how to get pre-pared. If you guys don’t have older siblings in Ms. Medina’s class, I will tell you what to expect and how to get prepared and what to look forward to.

1. Always be on time. It is very important to stay on time because if you are late, the class might already be one step ahead of you…. 2. Always take every opportunity to review and study. Who knows what could be on those tests. 3. OK. Homework. Homework isn’t that bad. You will prob- ably just have Spanish homework (a Spanish sheet with grammar concepts or a packet with a story and questions) due on Friday, a math sheet, vocabulary, reading and some- times a science sheet with 3-6 questions on it. But you wil probably never have all that at once. Not that bad right? 4. Organization. Organization is key in this class. It is very mportant because most likely, you will always have some- thing on top of your desk. If you can’t find something in your desk. Chances are pretty high that some consequence will be involved. So no homeless papers.

The Talent Show

5. Consequences. Consequences vary depending on what rule you break. Some of them include no recess, loss of Friday Fun, email/call home or writing a letter and having a parent sign it. So, remember to follow The Dewey Dos. 6. Friday Fun. Friday fun is free time at the end of the week. You get about 20 minutes of free time on the computer, or do whatever else. You can listen to music, play games or talk to friends. But, if you talk when you aren’t supposed to talk, that could mean loss of Friday Fun. 7. Websites. The websites that Ms. Medina uses for teach- ing are: Khan Academy (math), Duolingo (spanish), No Red Ink (grammar), CNN, NPR, BBC (all for social studies), Math Antics (math) 8. Ms. Medina is very kind and nice, but don’t get on her bad side. Sometimes a single comment could lead to a big debate. So don’t be surprised if that happens. 9. Be real good about reading. In fact, you use this really big purple notebook to write down all your thoughts. In the whole year you have 3-4 book club groups. You meet on a semiweekly basis and in fact, your ticket to pass for Friday Fun is the number of weekly post-its. You are expected to have 25 post-its (5 per day) by Friday, to track down your thinking. 10. Social Studies. In social studies, we learn about what’s going on in the world environmentally and politically and in the news. We learn about that stuff through videos, news articles and magazines. Sometimes, we’ll open up that History book and read out of there. I’m OK with both, but personally I like the news better.

One more thing, let’s see what other people think of Ms. Medina:Valeria Bautista (third grader, Ms. Medina’s future student): “I’m looking forward to being in her class. She sounds very nice.”

Karla Leon (5th grader, current student): “She teaches really good stuff. She also teaches it in a really good way for us to understand it. Fifth grade isn’t hard with Ms. Medina”

I hope you have learned something about Ms.Medina in this ar-ticle. I hope all of you are prepared for her class. If you are one of her future students (that means if you are currently in Ms Car-bone’s, Sr Macedo, Ms McKenna-Barreda, Sra Barroso or Miss Koh’s class) you can make a good impression for Ms. Medina. Oh yeah, don’t forget to stop by and say hi!

She teaches really good stuff. She also teaches it in a really good way for us to understand it. Fifth grade isn’t hard with Ms. Medina”

— Karla Leon, current, 5th grader
