Budget demands now require that U.S. naval

ships stay in service longer than originally planned, so

ensuring these vessels are operationally ready is crucial

to the Navy’s mission. Alion is delivering comprehensive

solutions to manage the maintenance and modernization

programs for all of the Navy’s 165 surface ships while

providing targeted engineering responses to emerging

technical challenges.

Additionally, Alion supported the standup of the

Surface Maintenance Engineering Planning Program

(SURFMEPP), an organization responsible for managing

the long-term maintenance requirements for surface ships,

by helping to introduce greater discipline and rigor to the

maintenance process.

By improving communication between shipyards and

drafting an enhanced long-term maintenance schedule,

which is critical to keeping surface ships in the fleet, Alion

is helping NAVSEA’s Surface Warfare Directorate manage

costs while keeping the fleet mission-ready.

training is fundamental to mission execution.

For U.S. Air Forces Central (USAFCENT), delivering

training effectively means analyzing the needs, developing

coursework and coordinating resources for hundreds of

Command and Control personnel.

With Alion’s training management capabilities,

USAFCENT’s Combined Air and Space Operations

Center (CAOC) at Shaw AFB, SC, provides comprehensive

training on the Air Operations Center weapons system

and theater operations. Our experts support leading

edge technology, including the development and fielding

of trusted thin client solutions as well as operation of

a comprehensive learning management system. We also

design numerous training programs, including a first-

ever curriculum to instruct deploying special technical

operations personnel.

Additionally, Alion experts analyzed tactics, techniques

and procedures to develop time-saving, effective solutions

to improve airpower support to counter-insurgency

operations. Alion’s support and expertise has led to a

15 percent reduction in air battle planning time and has

enhanced joint forces integration through training for

combat operations.

CONTRIBUTION TO THE INDUSTRY

The Customer Service Center enhances theability of Eclipse Aviation to meet the needsof their customers and showcase their state-of-the-art aircraft. The Center has been highlysuccessful for the Sales and Marketing team at Eclipse. It combines space for multiple customers to have anintimate experience, a showroom for their product, and anenvironment for customer related events in an under-utilized industrialspace adjacent to their existing facility. By making their business more successful,it has made both the design firm and the general contractor succeed in the design andconstruction industry.

ABILITY TO OVERCOME CHALLENGES

The primary challenge was to create the physical and psychological TRANSFORMATION OF ACAVERNOUS, INDUSTRIAL HANGER INTO A WARM AND INVITING SPACE FOR CUSTOMER

INTERACTION. This was accomplished by creating a series of "rooms within a room,"building out the space within the existing raw space. The hanger had minimal heating andcooling, so additional heating pumps were installed and compressed air lines relocated. The goal was to take advantage of the high ceilings and the industrial feel of the hanger andstill create a warm and intimate experience for the customers. The transformation begins atthe private entrance into the customer lounge from the main facility lobby. The lounge andsigning rooms have lower ceilings and are more traditionally finished spaces. Steppedwindows provide a glimpse of the aircraft in the showroom, which maintains the characterand expanse of the original hangar. The showroom and the delivery area keep the feel of thehanger but have been upgraded with high gloss white floor that matches the paint color ofthe jet, additional display lighting grids and large scale Eclipse graphics.

Another challenge was to combine the various functions of the Customer Service CenterINTO A COHESIVE WHOLE. The flow from public lounge space to signing room to showroomand the need to keep the hangar functional for jet delivery was constrained by the limitedsize and configuration of the existing hangar. THE SOLUTION WAS TO CREATE MULTI-

FUNCTIONAL, DIRECT-ACCESS SPACES to minimize the need for corridors. In addition, alimited finish palette was used and extends from space to space. Glass was incorporated toexpand the view of into the showroom and increase the perception of open space.

OVERALL EXCELLENCE

In summary, the successful transformation of an existing aircraft hangar into a CustomerService Center allows Eclipse Aviation to meet the needs of their customers whileshowcasing their state-of-the-art aircraft. A previously cold, utilitarian space is now aninviting multi-functional facility that showcases the innovation and personal experience thatdefines Eclipse Aviation.

3128 Central Ave SE Albuquerque, NM 87106 505 268-GRAZ www.grazejj.com

She's surprisingly chic for the daughter of a pig farmer.

Jennifer James, known as one of New Mexico's rising star chefs, started off her career not in the whirlwind kitchen of a culinary demagogue but rather as the daughter of pig farmers from central Illinois. The acclaimed Albuquerque chef is renowned for starting such innovative restaurants as graze and Restaurant Jennifer James but she attributes her earliest respect for food to much simpler roots. Sunday afternoons at her grandparents' farmhouse, James says, "taught me that food was synonymous with community and family."

Chef James has never lost sight of the nurturing aspects of fresh food brought to the table. Even during her formal culinary education at the University of Illinois, where she received her B.S. in Restaurant Management, Chef James relished the lessons taught by her mentor Professor Peter Brown. Professor Brown passed on his intense love for the rituals that surround food and soon Jennifer James found that "The food had chosen me."

From St. Louis to Albuquerque, Chef James found she was called to the kitchen. Whether as a kitchen manager for a woman-owned business or a special event chef with mentor Chef Kevin Zinc, Jennifer James learned that her ultimate joy came from cooking.

Quickly, Jennifer James found herself as the Executive Chef, first at Chef du Jour and then eventually at Le Café Miche where she quickly surmounted the challenges of

running a larger kitchen. With delight, she created her first menus and with delight, the diners of Albuquerque embraced her. During her first year at Café Miche, Jennifer James was awarded Best Chef of Albuquerque by La Cocinita Critics Choice Awards in 2000.

The stage was set for Chef James to go solo in August 2001. Proudly, though a bit timidly, she opened a forty-seat restaurant in an old adobe home and called it Restaurant Jennifer James. Through the collaboration of people passionate about food, the restaurant was wildly successful. When the opportunity came to capitalize on her initial success with an even larger restaurant in the heart of Albuquerque's trendy Nob Hill district, Chef James could not resist. graze by Jennifer James opened in December of 2002, and the actualization of Chef James' original vision, small plate dining, became reality. The critics concurred, and graze was awarded Best New Restaurant from La Cocinita Magazine. In April 2005, Chef James decided to focus her passion entirely on the new restaurant, graze, and she closed Restaurant Jennifer James.Today, Chef James and her staff at grazeare using the cleanest, finest ingredients available, seeking out local products and preparing simple yet innovative food.

And yet the daughter of pig farmers has yet to slow down. Again in 2003, Jennifer tied for La Cocinita's Best Chef, as well as winning the Best American Restaurant award. In 2005, she was lauded with Best Chef in 2005 by the Alibi and voted one of Albuquerque's most influential people under forty years of age by New Mexico Business Weekly, in both 2004 and 2005. With a long-term commitment to changing the dining landscape of Albuquerque, Chef Jennifer James has a vision to make eating at her restaurants an experience that nourishes body, mind and soul and brings community back to the table.
