Dear Alumnae, Parents and Friends,

From cover to cover, this issue of Tidings evokes to the reader the words of the late poet Maura Eichner, SSND, “Good news sets us free.” From the cover picturing the members of the Class of ’78 blowing out the candles on their 50th birthday cake to the upcoming events on the back cover, and everything in between, the good news at AHA is proclaimed:

• Six National Merit Commended Students• Three National Hispanic Scholars• An 84% success rate on AP exams• Six Sister Mary Nonna Dunphy Scholars• A county championship for cross country• An interactive workshop – Prominent Women in the Arts• Students bringing the AHA philosophy to life in New Orleans• Celebrations of AHA’s Feast Day and the SSND’s Foundation Day• Alumnae Weekend 2010• Remembering and celebrating the life of alumna and past principal

Sister Rita Goodman, SSND ’50• The recent inductees into the Athletic Hall of Fame• The good news from Angels everywhere!

The Class of 2014 outnumbers every other class at AHA, totaling 160 Angels. Overall enrollment is up at 560 and we continue to attract students from over 90 towns and cities spread across four counties in New Jersey and two in New York.

We have so much to be proud of and thankful for, beginning with Sister Nonna Dunphy, SSND, who founded the Academy of the Holy Angels in Fort Lee in 1879; continuing with Sister Elaine O’Donnell, SSND, who moved the school to Demarest in 1965; and never-ending because of the quality and commitment of every member of the Holy Angels community. As we remain faithful to our mission “to empower each young woman to reach the fullness of her potential” we will continue to proclaim the good news at AHA that “sets us free.”

Sincerely,

S. Virginia Bobrowski, SSND, ’61President, Academy of the Holy Angels

AP ScholarsHoly Angels offers 14 AP (Advanced Placement) courses to students in either junior or senior year. All students enrolled in Advanced Placement classes at Holy Angels are required to take the National Exam in that subject area in the spring. In the 2010-11 school year, a total of 130 students will be taking 234 exams. The group is comprised of 69 seniors (52% of the senior class) and 61 juniors (47% of the junior class). 84% of the students that took the 235 exams in 2009-10 school year succeeded with a 3 or higher, out of a possible 5.

AHA is proud to announce that we had a record 44 AP Scholars in 2010! This is an increase of four students from our former record of 40 scholars in 2009. The number of students in the category of Scholar with Distinction increased to 16 in 2010, which is a jump from five last year.

The 2010 Holy Angels cross country squad was one of the best teams ever to run in bergen County. The running Angels won their first seven major meets, and along the way set new school records.

They took first place at the Season Opener, the Wild Safari Run, the Shore Coaches Invitational, and the Manhattan Invitational, making the team the favorite to fly high at the league, county, and state meets. Their first ever Big North Championship was followed by their sixth straight bergen County Group b title. The girls were running on all cylinders as they won their third straight Bergen County Championship, breaking their own course record for fastest team time. The Angels finished strong in second place at the Non-Public A race, seventh place at the NJ State Meet of Champions, and a 12th place finish at the Nike Eastern Regionals.

The team was led by seniors Jen Molke, Emily Dunne and Maureen Crimmins, all returning to First Team All-County form. Seniors Kelly Hayes and Erin Ennis, junior Shannon Glynn, and sophomore Ashley Strysko all had super seasons, and made the team strong from front to back. Jen Molke set the school record at Darlington Park by running 18:24, and Emily Dunne ran 18:47 at Holmdel Park, another school record.

Both the JV and freshmen teams had success all season long as well. JV won the Wild Safari Run and placed high at all major meets, and the freshmen finished no lower than third in any race, showing that the team will be strong for the next few years.

Tennis

This season, the division consisted of all of the local parochial schools, and the schedule included some of the top regional schools such as Old Tappan, Northern Highlands and Demarest. The Angels finished strong with an overall record of 18-4 and a 5-1 division record. In defeating IHA in a home match, the team was awarded the title of Division Champs! This was a goal that the girls had set for themselves and worked towards during the season. This year’s team was a very cohesive group of players. With only two returning players, the team started from the ground up. Two of the JV players, Meredith Dwyer and Sara Luby,

moved into the singles spots and junior Alex Eckert returned to claim her spot at number one. Chemistry was quickly found among the 1st doubles team of freshman Christen Duff and junior Kyra Forte. The lineup finished strong with senior Lauren Wiener and rotating partners Mary Sullivan and Julia McGinn. The focus and tenacity of the team this year are what made it a winning season. The Angels improved physically and mentally each time they stepped onto the court and this was reflected in their scores. Their coach was very proud of what was accomplished and is eager to see what this same level of dedication will bring next year!

The AHA varsity soccer team ended the 2010 season with a final league record of 7-10-1. This more than doubled their wins from the previous season. Both matches against IHA were closely contested until the last minutes of the first half and the average goal differential was -2. The 2-1 win against Paramus Catholic was the first time in three years that AHA defeated the Paladins. The other wins against Hackensack, Pope John, Dumont, Pascack Valley and Old Tappan further validated the

ability of the AHA program to compete against school districts with larger enroll-ments and more established soccer programs. The 2010 varsity team has nine senior

members, but they look forward to continued growth in the 2011 season and hope to repeat the success of this season.

Volleyball

6

The 2010 Volleyball season ended with a record of 16 wins and 11 losses. This more than doubled last year’s record. Five of the 11 losses came from the top two teams in the state, IHA and Old Tappan.

This year, the Angels participated in the Paramus Tournament and the Northern Valley Invitational Tournaments. During the Paramus Tournament, Holy Angels made it to the finals by beating some of the top teams in the state: River Dell, bogota and Ridgewood. They lost in the finals to IHA in a close match, but it was a fight until the end. At the Northern Valley Invitational Tournament, Holy Angels beat more of the best teams in the county - Ridgewood, Pascack Valley and Demarest - and were crowned Champions! The girls’ performances at both tournaments validated their place in the county and forced opponents to take them seriously.

At the conclusion of the season, Holy Angels was tied for 2nd place in the division with DePaul. The team was ranked 12th in the bergen County Tournament and made it to the Final 16 where they lost to Ridgewood in three games. In the Non-Public Division of the state tournament, Holy Angels was ranked 3rd. The varsity team made it to the semi-final round of the state tournament and lost to Union Catholic in two games.

The 2010 varsity team has four graduating seniors and eight underclassmen returning. The coach is very much looking forward to the 2011 season as the volleyball program continues to grow and earn respect as one of the toughest teams in the county.

A delightful variety of background music was provided at the Freshman Parent Reception on September 19, 2010. Kathryn Fuselier performed on piano, followed by our “cocktail trio” (pictured) which consisted of Tori Oggioni on drums, Camille Fernandez on piano and Danielle Annecchino on bass.

We are proud of our coaches, our teams and Athletic Director Patti Gorsuch, for helping to make Holy Angels “Disqualification-Free” for the 2009-2010 school year. Our teams’ leadership, spirit and sportsmanship in representing Holy Angels to the larger community has earned our school this fine distinction since 1991.

Julia Jeon recently showcased her artwork at the Palisades Public Library. She donated all of the proceeds from this event to Milal Mission. Milal is a Korean Christian organization that provides services (arts and crafts, field trips, social functions, etc.) for disabled youth. Julia’s artwork was showcased and sold at this fundraising event. Her love and dedication to Milal is very impressive, as is her artwork. She has also authored a book, My Korean Experience: A Road to the Future.

PROMINENT WOMEN IN THE ARTSAHA was honored to host this unique event and distinguished group of women, many of whose accomplishments in the arts are so well known. This seminar focused on all aspects of the performing arts – directing, acting, producing, composing, singing, dancing, designing, constructing, painting or playing – there was something

for everyone. A special thank you to the parents of Angels in the Arts for organizing this event under the direction of current president, Peggy Sullivan. Also, AITA past President, Tom Coulouris, was instrumental in helping to coordinate all of the evening’s speakers and we are very grateful for that.

Austria This past summer, 22 Angels traveled to the culturally rich heart of Europe to explore the architecture, art, music and literature of the 17th and 18th centuries. This also included significant cultural and artistic material from other periods. The group took trips that supplemented their coursework for Humanities Study Abroad: Salzburg’s Baroque Treasures. Class was held in a local Haupschule in Grodig. The group had a chance to learn Austrian folk dancing and some of the girls who lived on a farm during their stay were treated to a hayride tour of the village with their “hausfrau.” They spent a few days in Munich and went to the SSND Mother House where they prayed at Mother Theresa’s grave in the chapel. While in the Munich area, they also visited the Dachau concentration camp, palaces such as Linderhof and Neuschwanstein, the Swarovski Crystal Works, and Innsbruck. Their travels in Bavaria included the town of Berchtesgaden and a visit to Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest plus a boat ride on Lake Konigsee. Further travels included the Salzkammergut lake region with a tour of a salt mine and several picturesque villages such as St. Wolfgang, Mondsee, and Hallstatt. Faculty members leading this educational journey were Nancy Schneberger and Gail Fair.

aha mission trip to new orleans 2010

This past summer, Angels journeyed once again to New Orleans to be

a part of SSND Build 2010. The following students participated: Nicole

Aparri ’12, Alicia Brizzolara ’12, Erin Ennis ’11, Alyssa Giammarella ’11,

Rebecca Lawlor ’12, Sara Luby ’12, Alicia Morejon ’12, Chrissy Polizzi ’11,

Stephanie Schoenster ’12 and Vanessa Tenazas ’11. Faculty members

that attended were Carol Fay and Kate Chambers. The group joined forces with students from AHA’s sister high school,

Institute of Notre Dame, as well as students from the College of Notre Dame. The group’s work was in the lower ninth

ward which is still in need of much help five years after hurricane Katrina ravaged the city. The 21 young women and 9

adults focused on installing drywall, interior construction, sanding and refinishing wooden floors, and exterior painting of

five homes. They were directed by LowerNine.com, a non-profit working in the city’s poorest area.

“I was most touched by the feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction that I got from helping someone else. It was also amazing to be on a trip with students from another SSND school. We had an unspoken connection even before we knew each other. Once we met, it was as if we had known each other for years. We all clicked and became friends so quickly. On this trip I learned that I am capable of much more than I thought. Building a house was an unfamiliar area to me and I was apprehensive about it from the beginning. However, I learned fast and by the end of the week, I knew what I was doing. I was able to use power tools and stand on ladders and scaffolding. I worked on a roof and nailed siding on a house. This experience taught me that I can do anything I set my mind to and have fun at the same time.” –Erin Ennis ’11

“Listening to the SSND Sisters tell their own personal accounts of their experiences when Hurricane Katrina hit was definitely one of the most touching moments of the trip. Meeting them and talking to them made their stories even more real and meaningful. The AHA philosophy teaches

us that we are all one global community and that we need to reach out to those in need. I feel that our trip to New Orleans really did fulfill that calling to help others.” –Rebecca lawlor ’12

“We had only just started painting when the sweat started dripping down our backs. The New Orleans heat and humidity were bearing down on us and I felt the beginnings of fatigue and laziness with every stroke. At first I thought it was just easy painting - it wouldn’t be a big deal if I slacked off here and there, right? Suddenly, the door opened and a tall man walked in. Wally, the homeowner, is a husband, father of two, and ex-marine who fought in Iraq. This

man, who had risked his life for our country, still could not come back to his own home. I told my group his story; how his family evacuated New Orleans and came home to nothing but a cement base and a few stairs. He told us about how he served in

our armed forces and spent days in the blistering heat. Yet, he still does not have a home, five years after Katrina! All the hours of painting, priming and hammering suddenly became very real to me. I wasn’t just painting a wall, I was painting the wall of someone’s kitchen, where they eat, gather and live. My work was helping Wally and his family finally get into their own home. After his visit, everything changed. My efforts and outlook on volunteering stirred a new passion and

emotion like never before.”–Alyssa Giammarella ’11

“My eyes have been opened to the sad and desperate situations others are experiencing, and I have come to realize that walking by without responding will never be an option for me. I am blessed to go to a school that offers such amazing opportunities and to have a family who supports my inclinations and desires to make a difference in the lives of others.”–Alicia brizzolara ’12

AHA World Language teacher Laura Kraytem led a tour of Italy and France this past summer. The 26 students visited Rome, Assisi, Florence, Venice, Milan and Paris. AHA faculty members Martha Weinstein and Barbara Burklund accompanied the group. Mrs. Burklund had the chance to meet up with Karly Bacci ’05 while in Paris.

THE OuTREACH CLuB sponsored its annual Thanksgiving Drive. This year’s drive supported the Notre Dame Learning Center in Rochester, New York, one of the sponsored ministries of the School Sisters of Notre Dame of the Atlantic Midwest Province. The Center

began in 2004, under the direction of S. Lorraine Burns, a School Sister, and Holy Angels alumna of the class of 1949. The learning center provides educational programs, free of charge, to children and women who are economically and/or educationally poor. Over $1500 was

collected in Staples gift cards, office and school supplies, postage stamps, Target gift cards for needy families, and a monetary donation for Christmas gifts for the children presently in the tutoring program. Below are some other highlights from additional outreach projects.

Sister Rita Goodman ’50, leader of the School Sisters of Notre Dame’s Villa Notre Dame in Wilton, CT, died on October 13 at Norwalk Hospital. She had been a professed member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame for 54 years.

Following S. Rita’s graduation from the Academy, she earned a Bachelor’s degree in English from the College of Notre Dame in 1954. later that summer she entered the School

Sisters of Notre Dame. She received the religious name Peter Mary and made her first vows in July 1956. S. Rita attained a Master’s degree in English (1964) and a Ph.D. in Counseling (1980), both from St. John’s University.

Her early years as a sister were spent teaching throughout the Northeast. She served at St. Mary School in East Islip, NY (1956-58); Girls Catholic High School in Malden, MA (1958-61); St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Dover, NH (1961-68); and Archbishop Walsh High School in Irvington, NJ (1968-69). In 1969, she was appointed principal of the Academy of Holy Angels and she remained there until 1972.

In 1985, Rita was elected to the Provincial Council of the North-eastern Province and moved to the provincial house in Wilton. She was re-elected in 1989, thus serving for eight years with her steady, low-key, insightful and generous spirit.

Most recently, S. Rita oversaw the day-to-day pastoral and administrative needs of Villa Notre Dame, which

serves as one of three regional centers of the SSND’s Atlantic-Midwest Province. Over the years, she had also served as a psychologist in private and archdiocesan practice and as an organizational consultant.

S. Rita gave a most meaningful gift to the Academy in 2000. She edited the history of the Academy, Academy of the Holy Angels – Spanning Three Centuries. Her tireless efforts to research and collect historical facts, interview alumnae and collect photos will forever be appreciated. It was truly a testament to her love of the Academy.

On Friday, alumnae were invited to celebrate Foundation Day and to take a trip down memory lane by attending classes. There was a prayer service to honor the SSNDs which also included a presentation by S. Carol Shinnick, SSND on “Women & Spirit: Catholic Sisters in America,” an exhibit at Ellis Island.

Saturday night’s reunion event began with Mass followed by a welcome reception and an opportunity to tour the campus. The presentation of the classes was done at the end of Mass. Sister Virginia bobrowski ’61, AHA President, reflected on the years gone by with the attendees – remembering the years under the dome to the move to Demarest. It has been a tradition that Angels receive yellow roses to commemorate special milestones. The members of the classes of 1949, 1955, 1957 and 1959 were presented with yellow roses and were recognized for celebrating more than 50 years since graduation. Of course, the class of 1960 could not be overlooked as they celebrated their 50th reunion! The class of 1985 was also called forward in honor of their 25th anniversary.

Before dinner, classes were called to have class photos taken. Yearbooks and photos were strewn on the tables as everyone took the opportunity to reconnect. The DJ played music that crossed the decades and the class of ’05 led the way to the dance floor. As dessert was served, everyone gathered to sing “Happy Birthday” to class of ’78 who were on hand to celebrate the big 5-0 together!

Mary Madigan Maher ’50 writes, “I remember with great fondness our 50th in 2000. Since then, Hugh and I have moved to a retirement community outside of Philadelphia. The name “Meadowood” accurately describes the beautiful country setting. We are both well and have learned how to play a good game of Bridge. My yoga classes are keeping me fit. I would love to hear from anyone who has made or is contemplating a similar move. In addition, we continue to enjoy our home on Martha’s Vineyard.”

Gertrude Muller ’50 writes, “How blessed we have been in these sixty years since graduation from Holy Angels. It seems remarkable that sixty years have passed. My best wishes for good health and prosperity to one and all.” Ruth Rempe ’50 sent her regrets that she was not able to attend Reunion as she was away in Costa Rica.

Aileen O’Halloran Gallagher ’55 writes, “I am so bummed to miss our 55th! It would have been so much fun. Wow! As we welcome a new calendar year, I want to thank each of you who attended our recent Alumnae Weekend. It was our most well-attended in recent years, and I think everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Please consider making this an annual Girls’ Night Out, as it enables you to reunite with classmates as well as Angels through the decades. Plans are in the works for S. Virginia and Dorrie to visit with our alumnae in a new round of regional meetings. be sure to join them if they show up in a town or city near you! It’s a great way to meet or reconnect with other Angels who have relocated to your metro area, as well as to catch up on what is going on at the Academy. If you are still local to the Demarest campus, be sure to keep an eye out for upcoming events, including our annual Mother-Daughter Tea, which takes place just prior to the spring musical production. Also, don’t forget to purchase a copy of the AHA Community Cookbook before they’re all gone. It includes recipes from alumnae, parents, students and faculty, and makes a great gift.

Sincerely,Patti McGovern Hill ’78

Linda Salem burtis ’64 has been a competitive tennis player for years in the Albany NY area, but has never trained harder than in the past year. She recently had the adventure of a lifetime. Linda and her husband, Dave, joined tennis great Martina Navratilova for a fundraising climb up Mount Kilimanjaro. They were raising funds for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, which aims to bring about positive social change around the world with opportunities for playing sports to impoverished young people.

The weather hampered much of the climb for the group with unusually heavy rains. Unfortunately, Martina had to be hospitalized after reaching 14,800 feet for high-altitude pulmonary edema, which can be potentially fatal condition due to an accumulation of fluid in the lungs. However, Linda and Dave continued on with the group and reached the 15,300 foot high camp. They were unable to continue to the peak at 19,340 feet for fear of hyperthermia. “It was a disappointment, but I don’t think we could have made the summit,” linda said. “The guidebooks describe Kilimanjaro as a walk-up and not technical, but this trip gave us all a much greater respect for Kili.”

“Thank you for an inspiring opportunity to reconnect with my friends and my roots [at Alumnae Weekend]. It was so much fun to see classmates and just talk about all the fun we had at Holy Angels – catching up on all we’ve been doing for the last 50 years! We ran out of time and could have talked all night!”

activities that they cover. The Demarest police continue to come annually and offer students a self-defense class. The hope is that the lessons learned over the four years will lead to activities that will last a lifetime.

AHA coach and teacher Sue Liddy adds, “We are also using a cross-curriculum approach in our games.” Last year, Liddy introduced the “Boston Tea Party” activity which was a huge hit. In fact, students began the school year asking when they were going to be able to do it again! The premise of the game is to reenact the Boston Tea Party with colonists on the dock and the British on the boat guarding the tea. It is not necessarily history repeating itself – the winner of this game depends on the team’s strategy. The use of games that enable the students to set their own

goals and objectives in order to win the game capitalizes on the spirited nature of Academy students. Physical Education Chairperson Tara Nordsvan explains, “Students can be leaders in class even if they don’t have athletic ability – it really is about building skills for life.”

Over the past few years, Physical Education and Health classes at the Academy have been revised. Now, these courses offer students the tools necessary so that they are focused on their overall wellbeing. Principal Jennifer Moran says, “Physical Education and Health have been innovating for some time. I really approve of the lessons they have introduced into the curriculum, especially the creative games that require the students to exercise teamwork as well as their bodies! The students have responded enthusiastically. In addition, some of the new units such as yoga provide much needed stress reduction and can become a lifelong habit. Students are asked to create personalized programs for themselves. They are empowered to make good decisions.”

Health classes are offered in the freshmen and sophomore years. The curriculum uses a combination of textbooks with online resources and includes many educational videos. Students study nutrition and wellness, as well as how to make sound decisions. The students create their own personal nutritional plans using online

tools that take into account the new food pyramid (see below). The courses are shaped by student input and are directed at helping each student to maintain a sound mind in a healthy body.

The Physical Education classes are now using a more fluid curriculum. This enables the teachers to make the classes more fun and centered on team-building. By senior year, the students take ownership of the course and work with the faculty members in choosing the

ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES Mary Lou Sciarrillo ’62 and Kathleen Shanahan Shank ’77

On November 6, 2010 there were two new inductees into the Athletic Hall of Fame: Mary lou Sciarrillo ’62 and Kathleen Shanahan Shank ’77. Both of these women were leaders on the court and fields during their high school years.

Mary lou Sciarrillo ’62 was remembered in the 1962 Echoes yearbook as “Varsity’s inimitable star - sportsman and scholar.” Mary Lou made her mark under the dome in Fort Lee, especially on the court as a member of the AHA basketball team. She is fondly remembered by classmates who say, “There was nothing that Mary lou couldn’t do!” She was on the varsity basketball team since her sophomore year and in her senior year was named captain. Her involvement around campus was not strictly athletic. Mary Lou was a member of Sodality, Blueprint, Chips, Echoes, Science Club and the School Spirit Organization (now known as Student Council). In recognition for her academic achievements, she was inducted into the National Honor Society and the Latin Honor Society. After graduation from AHA, Mary Lou attended Chestnut Hill College in Pennsylvania and earned a BA in Political Science. She then attended Georgetown University and attained a Master’s in History. In 1979, Mary lou moved to California and began a very successful career as a Human Resources Manager.

Currently, she is retired, but has had a very active role in the Senior Women’s Basketball Association in San Diego, CA since 1999 as player and coach. Mary lou played in the Senior Olympics in 2003 which was held in Virginia Beach, VA. She competed in the 55+ age division for women’s basketball. There were approximately 19 teams from across the US that competed and Mary Lou’s team won a 4th place ribbon. This past July, Mary Lou and the “San Marcos Dreamers” competed in the National Senior Games at

Stanford university. For the next National Senior Games, Mary Lou will be coaching the 80+ age team of women from San Diego as they compete in Houston, TX.

During her years at AHA, Kathleen Shanahan Shank ’77 was a three season athlete - she spent fall on the volleyball court, winters on the basketball court and spring on the softball diamond. Kathleen also spent one season on the track team. She was named co-captain of the volleyball team and captain of the basketball team in her senior year. She was also involved in Echoes, History Society, the Social Action Club and the Athletic Association, where she served as President in her senior year. Her academic success and hard work were rewarded when she was inducted into the National Honor Society.

After AHA, Kathleen attended St. Bonaventure University and earned a BS in Mathematics with minors in Business and Physical Education. She was a member of the NCAA Division II Softball team at St. Bonaventure as pitcher/outfielder and earned the Letterman of the Year Award in her senior year. She then attended the University of Iowa and graduated Cum Laude with an MA in Physical Education,

specializing in Tests & Measurements. As a student at both St. Bonaventure and the University of Iowa, Kathleen served as Assistant Basketball Coach where she assisted athletes not only athletically, but academically as well.

In 1984, Kathleen took on the role of Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Rutgers University and Academic Coordinator for the women’s basketball team. During this time, the Lady Knights Basketball program advanced once to the NCAA Sweet 16 and twice to the NCAA Final 8. In 1992, Kathleen was a team scout for the USA Bronze Medal Women’s Olympic Basketball team.

Currently, Kathleen is the Director of Academic Support Services for Student-Athletes at Rutgers University. She manages academic support programs for student-athletes in 30 varsity sports. Kathleen serves on the BIG EAST Academic Affairs Committee and the National Association for Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A) Task Force committee for “Best Practices”. Kathleen and her husband Chuck are the proud parents of three sons, brian (16), brendan (11) and Kevin (10).
