Congratulations to all of the students who made the honor roll for the first nine week period. The faculty and staff know how challenging the work is at Taylor and to make the honor roll is a huge accomplishment. We enjoy celebrating your academic successes, and we can't wait to do it again next nine weeks. A big thank you goes to the office staff and custodians, Ms. Kathy, Ms. Nicole, Ms. Stephanie, and Ms. Tammy, who did all of the behind the scenes work to make these ceremonies happen. We couldn't pull it off without them! Please see a list of all of the students who made the honor roll further down in this newsletter. It was great to see all of our dads at the annual Donuts with Dad event. We had a great time visiting with all of our dads and taking pictures. We can't wait to visit with our moms at Muffins with Mom in the spring. PARCC preliminary scores were released last week and our Taylor Tigers shined again! Student reports will be released November 9. Since this is a new type of assessment, the Louisiana Department of Education has released many different resources to help parents navigate and understand these new reports. We have the resources posted on our web site. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact us. Interim reports will be sent home on Friday, November 13. The Book Fair is Coming, The Book Fair is Coming!

This year’s library book fair will open on Monday,

November 9th and close at the end of the day on

Thursday, November 12th. All students will have a

scheduled time to visit the library for this event,

and the library will be open for shopping during

both of the scheduled grandparents’ breakfasts on

Tuesday and Thursday. On Tuesday, November

10th, the library will remain open until 4PM. There

will be an online book fair running from now until

Sunday, November 15th, and any books purchased

online will be shipped to the school. You can find

the online fair here: bit.ly/PFTSTAbookfair2015.

FYI: Most books will cost between $5.99 and $9.99

and no tax is charged. For payment, the library will

accept cash, checks, and credit cards.

Tidings from TechBytes: Free Software for Students

Kelly Maher

N O V E M B E R 2 0 1 5

Technology is transforming the world and will continue to do so in ways we can only imagine. The federal

government created ConnectED in order to arm students in the United States with the tools and skills they

will need in order to be completive in a global economy and successful in the digital age. Toward this end,

they have partnered with major software manufacturers like Microsoft and Autodesk to offer free software

to students.

Autodesk

Autodesk, a leader in 3D design, engineering, and entertainment software, is currently free for teachers and

students. Autodesk Inventor Professional and 3ds Max are great tools for developing 3D models that can

then be printed with our MakerBot Replicator 2. Visit Autodesk’s Education Community Free Soft-

ware for Students page to view and download available programs and software suites.

Microsoft DreamSpark

Microsoft DreamSpark offers students professional-level developer and designer tools like Visual Studio and

Kodu Game Lab. For a full list of available software, go to the DreamSpark Student Software Catalog.

Students will need to create an account and verify their student status before downloading.

YouthSpark, Microsoft’s program dedicated to promoting computer science education is also worth

checking.

edX

edX offers students free access to over 50 online Advanced Placement and other high school courses

offered through top universities like UC Berkeley, MIT, and Georgetown. These courses can be taken

independently or be used as a supplement to class a student is already enrolled in.

Esri

Esri also provides students with free access to ArcGIS, which allows students to map, analyze, and share

data. In order to access ArcGIS, your teacher will have to add you to a group.

P.S. The Hour of Code is coming, December 7 -13.

Theater and Speech News

Kenetha Harrington

It's been a busy year for the 8th grade Speech Students at Patrick Taylor. Early semester

work consisted of the students crafting demonstration speeches on various topics includ-

ing: How to speak Russian, how to make a volcano, and how to make gluten-free brown-

ies. This was a fun learning experience for all.

At the start of the second 9

weeks students learned about

special occasion speeches and

presented their own written

wedding toasts to their class-

mates.

Recently, students participated in

a debate project with positions

varying on issues such as foreign

aid and common core. Many of

the debates were moving and

impactful. Currently, students

are learning persuasive speaking

techniques and look forward to

working on more dramatic

assignments such as Readers

Theater and oral interpretation.

In addition to the eventful speech

classes, the Theatre students at

Patrick Taylor are gearing up for

the Fall Showcase that will take

place on December 10th. This

showcase will consist of a variety

of theatrical works including

monologues, scenes, and musical

performances. Tickets will go on

sale in early December.

NHS returned to Butler Elementary School on October 27th, and during this visit

members of NHS and SGA went to the school. President, Madison Pierce, created

a bingo game with agricultural and seafood products of Louisiana. The fourth grad-

ers had to figure out the answers to the clues she created before they could mark

their bingo card. It turned out to be a great activity, and the teachers in the class-

rooms were thrilled to have the older students there to provide the experience.

A Note from Maestro McCloskey

Brenda Hernandez and Tyler

Libert were named as Loyola

University Honor Band members.

T I D I

On November 8th and 14th Loyola University will be sponsoring the Loyola/Bourgeois Hon-

or Band. Colonel John R. Bourgeois, USMC (ret.) is the past director of The

President’s Own United States Marine Band in Washington DC.

The Loyola/Bourgeois Honor Band was established to

invite outstanding high school

student musicians to perform with the Loyola Wind En-

semble with and to benefit from Colonel Bourgeois’ ex-

pertise.

Tyler Libert and Brenda Hernandez have been appointed

to this prestigious ensemble. This is quite an opportunity

for them to be under the direction of one of the most

preeminent Maestros in American history.

The concert will be held at 3:00PM at Roussel Hall on Loyola’s campus. Everyone is

encouraged to attend the concert. It will be fantastic!

On Saturday October 5, 2015 the band had the honor of participating in the Tulane

University Marching Band Day. This year Tulane University squared off against the

University of Central Florida. The Patrick F. Taylor Band performed at half time with other

area schools and the Tulane University Marching Band.

A big thank you to all of the parents who chaperoned: Maggie Grindstaff, Richard Esneault, Shane Steinkamp,

Vincent Silva, and Erin Wallace. Everyone was a huge help. I thank you all.

Just a reminder to all the sixth grade students interested in joining band: beginning band will be offered during

the spring semester. Come by or stop me on campus and introduce yourself. I want to meet everyone before

next semester. In December, I will send home information concerning beginning band. The most important

thing to remember is that there’s no experience necessary.

Our after school practice schedule for band members (except beginners) is as follows:

Tuesdays — all wind instruments

Wednesdays — full band

Thursdays — percussion

Honor band auditions are in the beginning of January. Everyone interested in auditioning must let me know

soon. Now is the time to get your audition material and start preparing. Come by the band room if you need

your audition music.

That’s all the news I have for now. I look forward to seeing all students and parents around campus.

Sincerely,

John J. McCloskey Band Director

ACT Help After School

Cheryl Bordelon

From late September to early November, Taylor offered test prep sessions after school. Over twenty stu-

dents—from freshmen to seniors--gave up an hour of their after school time on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to

work on test taking strategies, especially those designed to raise ACT Reading section scores.

Ms. Meghan Ritter and Ms. Cheryl Bordelon introduced the same methods taught by top test prep. companies

and guided students in practice pieces. In the final two weeks, students who were regular attendees requested

help with their individual trouble areas, so the emphasis on reading shifted to the Science and Language

sections of the ACT.

More sessions will be offered next semester, so watch Paw Prints for information. Also, if parents would like

literature on what they can do to help their sons and daughters achieve their best personal scores, they

should contact Cheryl Bordelon [email protected].

Time Out for Nachos

Linda Patrick

Star Tigers are students who have been recognized by staff members for showing the ideal behaviors our

school has established. These are represented by the “TIGERS” letters: Thoughtful, Independent, Global

thinking, Engaged in learning, Responsible, and Serious about technology. Every Friday nominated students are

awarded with a Spirit Monkey and group photo with Ms. Zapico.

At the end of the quarter the students who have been recognized as Star Tigers during the quarter are re-

warded with a Time Out. They get time off from a fourth period class to have a treat and relax with their

peers. The first quarter MS and HS Time Outs were held October 20th and 21st. Nachos were enjoyed by all

the Star Tigers who had been nominated during the first quarter. This was about 280 students! Q1 Star Tigers

are listed below.
