Port Coquitlam, BC – September 27, 2010… Do you know how the City of Port Coquitlam could increase efficiencies, generate new revenue or make effective changes to its service delivery? Now you can click www.portcoquitlam.ca/budget to provide your ideas to the City through a new online Budget Suggestion Box. Initiated by the City’s Finance Division as part of the 2011 budget process, the online form is the City’s latest use of technology to provide the public with new opportunities to comment on and participate in civic functions. “We’re always trying to encourage residents to participate in the decision-making process,” Mayor Greg Moore said. “Initiatives such as the Budget Suggestion Box make it more convenient for residents to help guide the City forward. They can provide input on their own schedule rather than conforming to ours.” The Budget Suggestion Box will be a permanent website feature that will collect input year-round for each upcoming budget process. Work on the 2011 Budget and 2011-2015 Financial Plan has already begun. Other than the Budget Suggestion Box, opportunities for input will include an online survey and public meetings held in the new year. Details will be posted at www.portcoquitlam.ca/budget. For more information about the City’s budget or financial planning process, please contact [email protected] or 604.927.5486.

PICKS OF THE WEEK“Beauty and the Beast” -- Three-Disc Diamond Edition (G) -- The enchanting story of Belle, the young daughter of an inventor who helps a cursed prince find true love is finally getting the high-def release it deserves. This three-disc set contains not only a remastered Blu-Ray disc, but also a standard DVD version of the classic Disney film. And not only do you get the remastered theatrical release, but also two additional versions of the movie: A special extended edition, plus a re-edited cut based on the original story-boards. The third disc contains so many special features, I can’t even begin to list them all. Suffice to say, Disney really knocked this one out the park. You really owe it to yourself to add this to your film library.

“The Karate Kid” (PG) -- I have a soft spot for the original 1984 version of “The Karate Kid,” so this remake featuring Will Smith’s kid really didn’t do it for me. (And Jackie Chan is no Mr. Miyagi.) Although the fight choreography is flashier in this version, it wasn’t enough to sway me into liking it. Anyhoo, a lot of other people really enjoyed this flick, and the DVD comes with a Justin Bieber music video, so you know, whatevs, man.

“Grindhouse” -- Special Edition (R) -- Finally, after three years of waiting, “Grindhouse” is being released in DVD in its proper theatrical format -- complete with all the fake movie trailers -- instead of being split into two separate DVD sets. This is a two-disc set, with the second disc packed with more than two hours of special features, including the fan-favorite “Robert Rodriguez’s 10-Minute Cooking School.” Some of the other extras: “Death Proof” gag reel, a documentary on the makeup and effects for “Planet Terror,” and the extended trailer for “Werewolf Woman of the SS.”“Ken Burns: Baseball” (2010 Box Set) -- This re-release of Ken Burns’ epic miniseries about the

history of baseball not only includes the original nine-episodes, but also the “Tenth Inning” update to the series. Included in the boxed set is an 11th disc loaded with special features. Even though I’m not a huge baseball fan, I absolutely love this documentary. Burns got the inspiration for the series while working on “The Civil War” -- and it shows. “Baseball” is like a sequel to “The Civil War,” showing us the history of our nation in the century and a half following the conflict by using baseball as the metaphor for our growth as a nation.

WHEELS UP! (continued):• Airliners today can fly Lindbergh’s

transatlantic route from New York to Paris in fewer than seven hours.

• Chuck Yeager was the first pilot to fly faster than the speed of sound—supersonic—about 768 miles per hour (1,236 km per hour) at sea level. He accomplished the feat in a Bell X-1 jet on October 14, 1947. Yeager is a retired brigadier general with the U.S. Air Force and still flying at 87 years old. He lives in Penn Valley, California.

• Seaplanes are used in more areas than you may think. Vancouver, British Columbia, has a number of seaplanes used by commuters from the outlying islands as well as by tourists. Used for taking off and landing on water, the most famous seaplanes, called “flying boats,” were the Pan American Clippers in the 1930s. Their four engines propelled the planes at almost 200 miles per hour (322 km/hour). Pan Am, as it was called, was the first airline to cross the Pacific, the first to offer regular commercial service across the North Atlantic, and the first to establish extensive routes to South America. They had a fleet of 25 “flying boats.”

• The largest “flying boat” ever built was the H-4 Hercules, better known as the “Spruce Goose.” Henry Kaiser, head of a large shipbuilding company, and Howard Hughes, a well-known businessman, movie producer, aeronautical engineer and aviator, joined forces to build flying transport planes capable of moving troops and supplies across the Atlantic for World War II efforts.

• The “Spruce Goose” was finished in 1947, two years too late to help the Allied forces in the war. Disappointed with the timing, Hughes (Kaiser had left the project) was determined to show that his plane was flight-worthy.

• Controversy over the amount of money spent on the “goose” led to a government investigation. Hughes ordered his team to prepare the plane for tests on his arrival back from the investigation. On November 2, 1947, with newsmen and others gathered, he glided the “Spruce Goose” across a three-mile stretch of the Long Beach, California, harbor. On the third taxi Hughes stunned the crowd as he lifted the seaplane off the water. On the only flight it ever made, it flew for a little over a mile (1.6 km) for about one minute at an altitude of 70 feet (21 m). He showed the skeptics that the big bird could fly.

• Hughes stored the “goose” in flight-ready condition in a custom-built hangar for 33 years at an annual cost of approximately $1 million. Where is it now? It is the “crown jewel” of the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville, Oregon.

• Pan American’s order for 25 Boeing 747 airplanes on April 13, 1966, was the launch of the “jumbo jet” program that would make Boeing the aviation icon that it is today.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A workplace change doesn’t seem to have turned out quite as you’d hoped. Never mind: Just treat yourself to a healthy dollop of that Aries self-confi-dence, and you’ll soon view things differently.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Some of the support you might have hoped for in a difficult situation might not be there. But you have the strength to rely on your own capabilities if you must. Good luck.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A disagreement with a longtime friend can be pain-ful, but it also can be a learning lesson. Insist on a full and complete airing of views. You’ll both come away the better for it.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A stalled relationship can be restarted with some give and take on both sides. And while it could take more time than you expect, don’t rush it. Be patient, and let it happen naturally.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) An opportunity to move a long-stalled project from concept to construction might be opening up for the Big Cat. Meanwhile, be prepared to spend more time dealing with family matters.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Use your Virgo organizational skills to line up support to help you deal with a sticky workplace problem. A personal matter also might be helped with friendly intervention.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Trying to resolve a workplace problem with a long-time associate can be difficult. Consider bringing in an impartial third party to help you both reach a mutually acceptable solution.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good time to assess your current career situation. Consider whether you have a chance to move up where you are now, or if you should look elsewhere.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) With education being a dominant part of this week’s aspect, one of the things you might want to think about is taking courses to enhance your career opportunities.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You might have a problem trying to stay focused on a matter you’d rather not deal with. But the sooner you do, the sooner it will be resolved and out of the way.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An unforeseen complication creates a difficult problem. But things get resolved once you use your ability to turn negative situations into positive experiences.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The Pisces penchant for doing the right thing at the right time helps you deal with a particularly troublesome situation. Consider your best option, and act accordingly.

BORN THIS WEEK: Although you might some-times seem rigid in your views, your love of justice makes you a trusted friend everyone can rely on.

As we swing into fall, you may be look-ing for more dog-training information or a bit of canine-related entertainment to go along with the change of seasons. Here are a few books that might catch your interest.“51 Puppy Tricks” (Quarry Books, $18.99) was published late last year, but just recently crossed my desk. It’s a fun book that teaches both basic behavioral-training techniques and tricks that most puppy training manuals don’t dare to tackle. Written by Kyra Sundance, who trains acrobatic stunt dogs and has a couple of other dog-training manuals under her belt, this is a colorful, informa-tive book loaded with photographs and detailed breakdowns of tricks for puppies up to 2 years of age.“Oh My Dog” by Beth Ostrosky Stern, with Kristina Grish (Simon & Schuster, $25.99) is for owners or potential dog owners looking for a general care and

training manual. The 512-page book covers pet selection and potential costs, helping a new puppy settle in, and training, diet and health tips. Stern is perhaps better known as a television personality and as Howard Stern’s wife, but she’s also a spokeswoman for North Shore Animal League America (a no-kill animal rescue and adoption orga-nization) and is involved with other rescue organizations.“Small Dog, Big Dog” by Barbara Karant (Gallery Books, $25) is a beautifully pho-tographed collection of dogs of all sizes. More than 180 dogs representing 60 differ-ent breeds and ages from 6 to 14 years old grace the full-color pages. This one will hold a place on your coffee table and keep charming you.

Boeing purchased 780 acres (316 ha) of land in Everett, Washington, for the 747 production plant. The first 747 nose section was built at the Boeing plant in Wichita, Kansas, and delivered to the Everett plant on November 21, 1967. The Boeing 747 is longer than the distance of the first flight made by the Wright Brothers! In fact, the first flight could have been done within the coach class section of a 747-400.

• The Concorde is the fastest airliner to ever fly in regular revenue service. The top record-setting flight was by British Airways from London to New York on February 7, 1996. The flight was completed in 2 hours, 52 minutes, and 59 seconds.

• The first experimental flight of the Concorde was in 1969. The airliner was developed jointly by the French and British and flew in commercial service for Air France and British Airways for about 30 years. Following the airliner’s lone tragic crash in 2000 where 113 people were killed, service was resumed in 2001 and continued until 2003 when all Concordes were retired. In recognition of the Concorde’s service, British Airways timed

the last three flights on July 24, 2003, to land within five minutes of each other at Heathrow Airport in London. Most of the planes are now at museums around the world.

• Do you know which U.S. city claims to be the “Aviation Capital of the World?” Wichita, Kansas. It has a history of aviation entrepreneurs including Lloyd Stearman, Walter Beech and Clyde Cessna. The Kansas Aviation Museum showcases the city’s claim with the Wichita Flight Festival held every September.

• In 1929, Wichita had 11 airports, 100 aircraft-related businesses and 12 flying schools. About 2,000 people employed in the aircraft plants could produce 120 airplanes a week. Wichita was the main supplier of airplanes needed for World War II.

• According to an ABC news report on “Nightline” on May 5, 2010, U.S. passengers involved in airplane crashes in the last 30 years have had a 95.6-percent survival rate. Most recently this statistic was exemplified by the 2008 emergency landing of US Air Flight 1549 on New York’s Hudson River. The news media dubbed this event the “Miracle on the Hudson” because, remarkably, everyone survived. Statistically, flying is a very safe way to travel.

MUSIC LEGEND:PERRY COMO

Born the seventh of 13 children to Italian immigrants from Palena, Italy, Perry Como operated his own barbershop while attending high school. His first career ambition was to be the best barber in his hometown of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania.

• Como, called “Mr. C” by many fans, was

known for his rich baritone voice, easy-going casual style and, like “Mr. Rogers, cardigan sweaters. He once said, “I’ve done nothing that I can call exciting. I was a barber. Since then I’ve been a singer. That’s it.” Como’s demeanor was so relaxed that some thought he was too calm. One music critic wrote, “Nobody was so intensely relaxed.”

• Although he was considered a “heartthrob” to women, he was a wonderful family man who married his high school sweetheart, Roselle Beline in 1933. They had three children. She died two weeks after their 65th wedding anniversary in 1998. Como lived until 2001, dying six days before his 89th birthday. Shortly before his passing he became a great-grandfather.

• One of Como’s best known tunes was “And I Love you So.” Romantic ballads were his

Ed Jones' racing career started the year after he graduated from high school in Malad, Idaho. He bought a new Ca-maro and headed to Las Vegas to college. He had always had a love of fast cars and decided to try drag racing. He won his first race - and that was what started everything. After returning to Idaho, Ed married his high school sweet-heart, Wendy. They spent many weekends at the race track winning several races. By the time they had two children, Stacey and Todd, he decided it was costing too much and parked the car for two years. With his love of cars and hav-ing a hard time staying away from the race tracks, he had the bright idea of getting an exhibition wheelstander. Ed and Wendy used all of their savings, borrowed some money and bought a wheelstanding stagecoach in 1976. They raced this car for many years and then added a wheelstand-ing firetruck in 1987. Both vehicles are authentic reproduc-tions, one a 1875 concord Stagecoach and the other a 1931 Chevy Fire engine. The old stagecoaches were pulled by four-legged horses. They have been replaced by 1300 plus horsepower with a supercharged 427 c.i. Chevrolet V-8 en-gine. This type of muscle can push the 2800 pound stage-coach to over 120 mph in 10.9 seconds, when "The Outlaw" wants to show some speed. Wheelstanding the entire length of a drag strip, the 3,000 pound fire truck is truly unique. The fiberglass and aluminum body is detailed with hose reel, ladders, siren, bell, fire extinguishers and all the good-ies that make a real fire truck. Underneath, Jones has built a custom chasses fitted with a 1300 horsepower, supercharged 427 c.i. Chevrolet engine. Once Jones lifts the front wheels off the ground, two real wheel hand brakes guide the cars down the strip as titanium skid bars make sparks fly. Head-ers shoot 20 ft. flames containing a secret ingredient, which enables fans to smell Jelly Belly Candies.Ed is one of about eleven wheelstanders licensed by the Na-tional Hot Rod Association in America to run on NHRA ap-proved strips. Getting this license is difficult, since each ap-plicant must prove his car is professionally prepared and the driver can provide a show safely, that is worthy of NHRA licensing. Ed and Wendy have shared 36 years of marriage and many memories. They and their 2 children have been to many car shows, air shows and drag strips throughout the entire United States as well as Canada, Japan and Germany. They have made many friends at tracks around the country and can be seen in the pits talking to the fans, answering questions and handing out samples of Jelly Belly Candies where ever they perform. Now that their children are mar-ried with families, Ed and Wendy do most of the traveling alone but hope to start taking some of the 5 grandchildren with them on a few trips. Jones has many great accom-plishments. In 1988 he was featured on the international television show "Spectacular World of Guinness Records", as he set the Guinness world record for the longest wheel-stand on a dragstrip. The record still stands at 2,298 feet. He has also accomplished running a dragstrip "Drag City

Raceway" for 8 years. Ed has been on the Malad Volunteer Fire Department for 28 years and is very active in city functions in his home town of Malad, Idaho. He now owns a used vehicle dealership and a windshield business. If you ask Ed what he thinks about the past 30 years of wheelstanding, he says, "I have it all. I have been doing what I love and I have a close family that has supported me all the way in fol-lowing my dream. I hope others will be inspired to follow their dreams."

Plum Crazy Restorations just opened up a muscle and classic car restorations shop in Port Coquitlam and from the attention they have drawn in just the first few months, there is definitely a need for a one stop muscle and classic restoration shop in the area. Latest projects include a beautifully restored 1968 Mustang Fastback in black with white stripes which you may have seen while driving by their location on Mclean Ave across from the Cat & Fiddle Pub. So what does it take to bring back these beautiful powerhouses of the 60’s and 70’s? “A lot of time, dedication and a good deal of pocket change!” says the head designer/builder Joe Thomas. The idea is to start with a solid body, as with the ’68 Fastback and pay attention to every detail, from chrome bumpers to deluxe seat upholstery to a complete rebuild on the original 289 engine. This beauty is really a rare preservation of the exciting muscle cars of the 60’s and if you are on the market for a fastback and not sure where to put your hands on one, check these guys out - they are located at 1835 McLean Ave in Port Coquitlam. As we go to print, rumours are they are working on a 1000 HP ’72 Roadrunner to be raced and showcased at Mission Raceway next summer. Keep your eyes peeled on this section for future updates and info. SEE FARHEEN and JOE Today!!

“All living souls welcome whatever they are ready to cope with; all else they ignore, or pronounce to be monstrous and wrong, or deny to be pos-sible.” -- George Santayana

It was 20th-century French air force brigadier general and geopolitician -- and bearer of the nickname “father of the French atom bomb” -- Pierre Marie Gallois who made the follow-ing sage observation: “If you put tomfoolery into a computer, nothing comes out of it but tomfoolery. But this tomfoolery, having passed through a very expensive machine, is somehow ennobled and no one dares criticize it.” Gravity makes you shorter. It’s true; gravity compresses your spine -- in a weightless envi-ronment, you would be 2 to 3 inches taller than you are here on Earth. You might be surprised to learn that the first ceiling fan was introduced way back in the 1860s. The lack of electricity was no deterrent; the device was powered by a stream of running water. When the bubonic plague, more commonly known as the Black Death, was at its peak in Europe in the 14th century, a wide variety of

remedies was prescribed, including smoking tobacco, bringing spiders into the household, inhaling the stench from a latrine, sitting be-tween two large fires, drinking red wine in which new steel had been cooled, and bath-ing in goat urine. Those who study such things say that women are better at identifying smells than men are. In 1994, Singapore banned the importation and sale of chewing gum. Ten years later, lawmakers added a revision: Gum that has “therapeutic value” is now allowed. Over the past year, in the United States lot-tery sales have increased by a whopping $1 billion. main focus, but he also had some fun and popular novelty hits, such as: “Pappa Loves Mambo;” “Catch a Falling Star (and put it in your pocket);” “Hubba, Hubba, Hubba;” and the great tune “Hot Diggity (dog ziggity boom).”

• Como got his first big break in 1933, while visiting Cleveland, Ohio. He was hired by Freddie Carlone’s band for about $25 per week. He took the job, even though he was earning more with his barbershop at the time. From the band, he moved on to become the vocalist for the Ted Weems Orchestra. That led to radio and then television. • From 1948 until 1963 Como hosted television shows on NBC and CBS. These were “The Chesterfield Supper Club,” “The Perry Como Show” and “The Kraft Music Hall.” He won Emmy Awards for best variety show on television in 1954-56, 1958 and 1959.

PERRY COMO (continued): • He hosted television Christmas specials from 1948 until his final in Dublin, Ireland, in 1993. The Dublin special was also his final recording.

• Christmas albums were a big seller for Como. Even today his Christmas music is popular. In December 2006, five years after his death, his 1946 recording of “Jingle Bells” topped Billboard Magazine’s Hot Ringtones chart.

• Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, Como’s hometown, honored him with a life-size statue in 1999. At the unveiling of the statue, Mayor Daniel Caruso said, “Here’s a man who met the Pope and the President and the Queen Mother and is still the same Perry Como. There is nothing flamboyant about him; he treats everyone the same.” Mr. C, as he was called locally, was unable to attend the ceremony due to illness, but four generations of his family were there. An inscription at the base says, “To this place God has brought me,” one of Como’s favorite

sayings.

• Over Perry Como’s 60-plus-year career he sold more than 100 million records. He has three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for radio, television and music.

• Como was the seventh son of a seventh son—considered a sign of good luck in Italian families. He sure had a good life, but his good fortunes should probably be attributed more to his decisions to live an honorable life rather than luck
