Tidbits takes a look at some fun food facts. According to legend, a Jewish baker in 1683 baked the first bagel. This stirrup-shaped yeast dough was made to honor Jan Sobieski, a renowned horseman and the King of Poland, for saving the people of Austria from Turkish invaders. The baker named the hard roll beugel, the Austrian word for stirrup. The roll soon became a hit throughout Eastern Europe, and over time its shape and name evolved into the modern-day bagel. • What would the bagel be without cream cheese? In 1872, William Lawrence of Chester, N.Y., an American cheese maker, was experimenting with a recipe for Neufchâtel, a soft French cheese. He didn’t get it quite right, but what was produced was a much softer, silkier cheese. The cheese maker realized that this new cheese was better suited as a spreadable cheese designed to be consumed fresh. It didn’t need to be molded and aged in the Neufchâtel style. He wrapped it in foil, and it was trademarked as Philadelphia Brand Cream Cheese in 1880. turn the page for more! scan code crazy offer!! 4801 27th St. Vernon, B.C. 250-542-3321 Enter to SIMPLY SATELLITE Simply the Best. TIDBITS® FOOD FUN

by T.A.Tafoya

Where did that come from? Ever wonder how some of your favorite foods came to be? Tidbits takes a look at some fun food facts.

• According to legend, a Jewish baker in 1683 baked the first bagel.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Temper your typical Aries urge to charge into a situation and demand answers. Instead, let the Lamb’s gentler self emerge to deal with a prob-lem that requires delicacy.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You are aware of what’s going on, so continue to stand by your earlier decision, no matter how persuasive the counter-arguments might be. Money pressures will soon ease.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) By all means, have fun and enjoy your newly expanded social life. But don’t forget that some people are depending on you to keep promises that are very important to them.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You need to wait patiently for an answer to a workplace problem and not push for a decision. Remember: Time is on your side. A financial matter needs closer attention.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) You now have information that can influence that decision you planned to make. But the clever Cat will consult a trusted friend or family member before making a major move.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Good news: You’re finding that more doors are opening for you to show what you can do, and you don’t even have to knock very hard to get the attention you’re seeking.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your gift for creating order out of chaos will help you deal with a sudden rush of responsibilities that would threaten someone less able to bal-ance his or her priorities.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Congratulations. Your energy levels are coming right back up to normal -- just in time to help you tackle some worthwhile challenges and make some important choices.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The sage Sagittarian should demand a full expla-nation of inconsistencies that might be cropping up in what had seemed to be a straightforward deal.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A conflict between obligations to family and to the job can create stressful problems. Best advice: Balance your dual priorities so that one doesn’t outweigh the other.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Don’t guess, speculate or gossip about that so-called “mystery” situation at the workplace. Bide your time. An explanation will be forthcom-ing very soon.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Boredom might be creeping in and causing you to lose interest in a repeat project. Deal with it by flipping over your usual routine and finding a new way to do an old task.

BORN THIS WEEK: You can warm the coldest heart with your lyri-cal voice and bright smile. You find yourself at home, wherever you are.

Food Fun (continued):• Have you had your Wheaties today? In the 1920s,

a Minneapolis health-spa owner made homemade bran gruel to feed his clients. The mixture helped keep them regular and helped them lose weight. One day, he dropped some on the stove, and it hardened into a crust. After tasting it, he liked it better than what was cooking in the pot. He made a sample batch to show a friend at the Washburn Crosby Company, which later became the General Mills Company. The original mixture was too crumbly, so they came up with a better flake using wheat. Jane Bausman, the wife of a company executive, thought up the name Wheaties.

• Don’t skip your Wheaties! A study of 19,000 North Americans found that people who skipped breakfast are more likely to gain weight because they tend to overcompensate for the loss of key nutrients at breakfast by eating more fat-rich, high-energy foods later in the day.

• The oldest piece of chewing gum is 9,000 years old, but it was in 1906 that the first “bubble gum” was invented by Frank Fleer. His first batch produced a gum so sticky that if it got on your skin the only way to get it off was with vigorous scrubbing and turpentine. His recipe was finally perfected 22 years later by Walter Diemer in 1928. The 23-year-old Diemer was an accountant for Fleer Chewing Gum Company who experimented with new gum recipes in his spare time. His first commercial batch of Dubble Bubble Gum just happened to be pink because that was the only food coloring on the shelf that day. Fleer’s gum became the most popular penny candy on the market. Food Fun (continued):

• In 1912, a Cleveland chocolate candy maker named Clarence Crane wanted to make a hard mint that wouldn’t melt in the summer heat to boost summertime sales. While at the pharmacy buying bottled flavoring, he noticed the druggist using a hand operated pill-making machine that produced flat, round pills. He contracted with the pharmacy to press the mints into shape. The machinery malfunctioned and stamped the candy with a hole in the middle. After looking at the shape, it reminded him of a life preserver so he called them Lifesavers.

• Did you know ketchup didn’t always contain tomatoes? The Chinese invented it in the 1600s, and this mixture had no tomatoes but a lot of pickled fish and spices. In the early 1700s, British explorers encountered the sauce in Malaysia. By 1740, it was a British staple and was then renamed ketchup. Tomatoes became an ingredient in the late 1700s when New England colonists added them to the mixture, and modern-day ketchup was born. Tomatoes may have been added sooner, but they were once thought to be poisonous. Henry J. Heinz introduced bottled ketchup in 1875, and by the 1980s, Heinz Ketchup was in one of every two American households.

• In 1905 in San Francisco, an 11-year-old boy named Frank Epperson was mixing powdered flavoring in a glass of soda and water. He accidentally left the glass with the stirring stick in it on his back porch overnight. He found it frozen the next morning. This gave Epperson an idea, and 18 years later in 1923, he started selling “the Epsicle ice pop” for five cents, later changing the name to Popsicle.

• In 1930, Ruth Wakefield was making chocolate cookies at the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. She ran out of baking chocolate

SAFFRONquist REALTOR® . ABR. Interior Designer. AIOP

In Canada, all land is owned by the Crown (Federal and Provincial governments). When you “buy or sell a house” you are not purchasing or selling physical property. The concept is not the same as the sale of a material object like a car or piece of jewellery. Simply phrased, Real Estate is a collective of rights (interest) in the usage of a property. This interest is unique to each property and may evolve or change over time at the efforts of owners or governments. Multiple parties may have rights over one property. Also, one property may have rights over other properties. It is important to understand that Real Estate itself is extremely complex and requires the investigation and analysis of various documents to identify what is being offered for sale. National Statistics indicate that For Sale By Owner properties have a 5.4% open market success rate. Many Buyers are fearful to work without a REALTOR® and those who are brave enough to go-it-alone often get lost in the process. Just who is responsible for the packaging of some of the newer products these days. Some of it doesn't make sense and then some of it is just down-right frustrating. Have you picked up a new computer game CD lately? We are talking about a small plastic disc that comes in its own paper sleeve which is inside a cardboard envelope which is inside a hard plastic case which is almost impossible to open and this is inside a cardboard box that is vacuum packed in cellophane that is strong enough to support the weight of a full grown man! By the time you take it home, find a knife, cut it open, get the case open and retrieve the disc the game has become obsolete. I recently picked up one of the new I-Pods, which I must admit totally impressed me with its full color packaging and graphic designs along with sixteen pages of instructions in a box the size of an office file cabinet , all to house a piece of technology slightly bigger than a disposible lighter. What about the new tetra juice containers? You open the plastic tab on the top of the box and as soon as you touch the little foil flap inside, it flattens out and you have to stab it with a pen in order to pour the juice out. Who out there can actually successfully squeeze and turn the caps on the mouthwash bottles in the morning while your still half unconscious and your hands are numb with pins and needles from sleeping on them? Tell me you haven't re-sorted to pushing your car keys through the foil lid on the top of the one litre container of oil you are trying to add to your car in seventeen degree below weather!

How hungry have you gotten struggling to tear open the ketchup, mustard, relish and vinegar packets only to have them splatter on your hands or worse yet, the mustard squirts on your white shirt, (and it will, it's one of natures laws). Now once you tear open your submarine sandwich with your teeth (trusting of course they are not false because then your really in trouble), count the times the zip top has pulled off your can drink and once again the handy old Bic pen has had to come to the rescue and save the day. At this point I won't even approach the absurdity of the average condom package nor at my age the timing involved. Who designed the glue at the beginning of the toilet paper roll? Was that some kind of foray into premedi-tated bathroom humor. I can picture the designers of all of these products in their research departments snickering and giving each other high fives whenever a new product is developed because it gives them the opportunity of designing a new "fool-proof and consumer-safe " package. Somehow I don't see the convenience and handiness of this new way of life. It seems to run akin with the myth that the development of the computer would eliminate the use of paper and yet with its introduction paper use has in fact increased more than ten fold. I truly miss my can and bottle opener and the hard way of life I grew up with. I would bet dollars to donuts that most of my readers over forty-five years of age do too!

Dog Leaves His Mark While Owners SleepDEAR PAW’S CORNER: About a year ago, we adopted an 18-month-old mutt. “Buddy” is a great dog, but he has one continuing problem: He urinates and defecates in the living room in the middle of the night. We don’t feed or water him after about 7 p.m., and I take him out nightly at 10. He is other-wise very well housebroken. The only thing that has worked so far is putting him in his crate overnight, but my husband says it’s cruel. Is there any other solution? -- Janice in Lewiston, Calif.

DEAR JANICE: Actually, crating is one of the first methods to try in this case, and it can be successful in stopping the problem (though not necessarily the behavior, as Buddy has demonstrated). But some people do feel that crating is cruel, so I understand your husband’s feelings about it.

Have you mentioned this problem to Bud-dy’s vet and had him examined for any physical problem? It’s always good to make sure he’s healthy. Also talk to the vet about Buddy being adopted. He may have picked up a bad habit at his former home, or he might still be experiencing some stress from leaving one home and then coming to an-other one.If the problem is behavioral, continue housebreaking with Buddy. A key part of stopping the overnight elimination is to not allow him into areas of the house in which he has already left his “mark,” so to speak. If this is not possible, you may have to continue with the crating, or you may want to consult a professional trainer for more in-depth ideas on solving this dilemma.

We thoroughly enjoy it and hope it’s not canceled. -- Pete and Ann, Venice, Fla.A: The USA network’s drama starring Mary Mc-Cormack will return for its fourth season on Sun-day, May 1. The show already has been renewed for it’s fifth season, which is scheduled for a 2012 premiere. So, no worries for your favorite show -- you’ll have at least 20-something more episodes on the way.***Q: The other day, my mom was watching “My Girl” on DVD and it got me to wondering what Anna Chlumsky, the actress who played Vada, is

doing now. She was so good in the movie! -- Paula F., Fresno, Calif.A: Anna’s most recent role is that of Jennifer Mills in the Hallmark Channel original movie “3 Weeks, 3 Kids,” premiering Saturday, May 7. Jennifer is a free spirit who is forced to grow up when her par-ents hatch a plan for their solo daughter to care for her sister’s rambunctious children. Of taking on this surrogate-mom role, Anna says: “My character has to face her fears of letting the kids down and letting herself down, and in confronting those fears, that’s really where you find your courage.”Anna, now 30, has guest-starred on “30 Rock” and “Law and Order,” among many other shows. She also just finished shooting “Veep,” a pilot for HBO opposite Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and is in production on the feature film “Sam,” starring opposite Chris Klein.

***Q: NCIS is my favorite show. I was told that Mark Harmon is leaving. Is that true? -- Linda J., Nokomis, Fla.A: With record-setting ratings and being picked up for a ninth season, you can bet Mark won’t be leaving “NCIS” anytime soon.

Just how fresh can the news get? This article should be read by you as if you are trying to leave the house for an appointment. Of course, you are late and wondering what you are forgetting to throw into your carry bag, or call it what you will. That’s what I feel like right now. I picked up a copy of last week’s Tid Bits and I was not there. What a blow to my ego, I couldn’t find out what I had been doing in short form, and then I won-dered how relieved you as a reader must have been to finally see an edition without me yakking about myself. Then I read an email from Mr. Tid Bits that someone had complained that my article was missing! Okay then. Last week, I rose to the occasion of fulfilling an agreement to provide music for a fundraising event that happened last year for the Vernon Jubilee Hospital. I cannot dis-close the high bidder for a winning package from the silent auction. However, it consisted of a catered private dinner and music and someone paid a pretty dollar to sample some fine “Tappas” delights. That’s Spanish cuisine and it was prepared in a very nice home in Coldstream by three lovely ladies. My part was as usual: change myself into the German-Spaniard complete with a two by four glued to my spine and a repertoire of Spanish selections on the guitar for an hour. I can only disclose that the generous buyer was of Irish decent, they have a living room that was designed with the same acoustic properties as my flamenco guitar, there were Texas Longhorns in the back yard about to go into calving mode and the house dog that I thought was a Jack Daniels was actually a Jack Russell. So much for me and my canine pedigree knowledge. I listened to a pre-release version of a new song written by Pauline Kyllonen called “More Than Kiss”. It is currently on an mp3 for a handful of pre-selected listeners. Hopefully, it moves to a larger arena. Look for her website under her name. I am so loaded with stuff, that I do not know what to mention next. By the time you have read this we will have done the last Coldstream Coffee House. Were you there? In the meantime, I will just go into a corner and have a mild fit as I try to figure out who to vote for. Such is life, self importance, a double ego and brand new teeth. I may only write one more article about coffee houses. I think I have maxed out on the topic. But, if I do continue, then I might discuss some other topics. If you have any suggestions that are of interest to you, let Mr. Tid Bits know, Perhaps WE can do a kind of Anne Landers musical hang-up series, because I sure would like to know the answers to some of my own questions. Adios muchachos and auf wie-dersehen.

Food Fun (continued): so she broke a bar of semi-sweet chocolate into

little pieces and added them to the dough. When the cookies came out of the oven, the chocolate hadn’t melted. Instead there were little chips of chocolate scattered throughout the cookie. She called her new creation Toll House Crunch Cookies. She later sold the recipe to Nestle. No one can eat just one! In 1853, at the Moon Lake Lodge in Saratoga Springs, New York, a diner sent an order of french fries back to the kitchen because they were too thick. The chef, George Crum, remade the fries thinner this time, but the customer sent those back too. Crum decided to teach the diner a lesson, so he sliced a potato paper-thin and fried it until it was crisp. The customer loved them. Soon other customers were asking for potato chips. Today, in the United States, a pound of potato chips costs 200 times more than a pound of potatoes.

• Sometimes, a little change can yield big results. American Airlines saved $40,000 in 1987 by eliminating one olive from each salad served in first-class.

• The phrase “busy as a bee” has roots in reality.

To make just two pounds of honey, bees have to visit four million flowers, traveling a distance equal to four times around the earth.

• If you find yourself on the wrong end of a bee and get stung, grab an onion. This root vegetable contains a mild antibiotic that tames bee stings and also fights infections, soothes burns and relieves the itch of athlete’s foot.
