CHRIS WADDELL (continued):• As ifallofWaddell’s triumphs inski racingweren’t sufficient, he branched out intowheelchair racing and nabbed the WorldChampionship in 1998 and a Paralympicgold medal. His greatest conquest, however, occurred in 2009, when the 42-year-oldparaplegic climbed to the summit of MountKilimanjaro,Africa’shighestmountain, usingthepowerofhisownarms.Heascended the19,340-foot-high (5,895-m) mountain insix and half days, wheeling himself up in aspecially designed four-wheeled mountainbike, a 50-pound (22.7-kg), 27-geared cyclethat can scale foot-high boulders. The final4,000 feet (1,219 m) were a vertical climb, duringwhichhewassecured toawinchandpedaled up a fixed rope. Waddell estimatedthatittook528,000revolutionsofthecycle’swheels to reach the summit. Speaking of hismonumental feat, his words were, “My goalwas to change the lives of the 600 millionpeopleintheworldwithphysicaldisabilities.ThatdayIfeltlikeIrodeontheirpower.”
•WaddellhasbeenhonoredbySkiing magazine as one of “The 25 Greatest Skiers in NorthAmerica.”Hehashadmodelingassignmentsfordepartment storesandcatalogsandhadarole in the daytime drama “Loving.”People magazinehasincludedhimontheirlistof“TheFiftyMostBeautifulPeopleintheWorld.”
• Waddell has also created a non-profitfoundation called One Revolution (referringtoonerotationofawheelchair’swheel),withthegoalofbringing“hopeand inspiration tothe disabled community.” He maintains hewouldn’tchangeathingabouthislife, saying,“Idon’tthinkwhathappenstoyouisnearlyassignificantaswhatyoudowithwhathappenstoyou.”
