Editorial
Enjoy Tickton and enjoy your summer too! That’s what I said in the Editorial of the last Tickton Diary: well, we did have a super sum-mer of weather didn’t we, and several village events made the most of it, as I hope did many of our readers! Now back to fairly autumnal weather and village life towards the end of an-other year.
This edition is the last in volume 25, meaning that we complete 25 years of publication, start-ing as we did in November 1988, for the first Christmas issue. Some people probably still have a copy and if you dig it out you’ll marvel at how much has changed, certainly in the format and quality of the magazine. Then we used to, literally, cut and paste; now, in the digital age, we can link the camera shots directly into the software and the electronic copy of the full magazine into the printer’s big machines. We had no adverts either for the first couple of edi-tions, but, thankfully are now supported by a wide range of local businesses—thanks again to them all, and to all the people who help with TD in any way. It was always meant to be part of the church’s contribution to village life, and we’ve certainly maintained church and clergy input over all the years. Hopefully many will agree that we have managed to make that ‘contribution’ we set out to make when we started.
Now for this issue: read about the Hull Bridge memorial, the Traffic Petition, Beverley Min-ster, and the happenings of the various village clubs. Plan you autumn entertainment with Tickton Little Theatre at the top of your list.
See you next time (Christmas!!)

Vicar’s letter, Church News . .
Not many people will know it, but Tickton appears in a recently published book. I might as well do some self-publicity and say that I’ve written a book called ‘Rules for Reverends’. It’s published by the Bible Reading Fellowship, and is available in the Minster Shop (and online: I’m a ‘best seller’ on Amazon!). The book is meant to be a humorous reflection on life in churches, and came about because, having had 10 years out of ‘parish’ ministry, all sorts of truths and rules about parish life came back to me when I came here in 2009. Things like the fact that the house you are looking for in the dark will always be the one with no number, and that when you get there the doorbell won’t work. Tickton appears in the section which has rules about raffles. Those who were there will know that at one Christmas show the raffle tickets looked like they were the same colour, but were subtly different. I ended up quoting the serial number of each numbered ticket so that we knew who had one each prize. It made me remember that calling raffles is a key skill of the ordained ministry, and one they don’t prepare you for in theological college. Putting the book together was a great way to think again about what I do as a Vicar, what the ministry is about, and we are for as God’s people, the church. We do indeed find ourselves in some odd situations, and some of our ways are baffling. In Tickton we are one church, but have two build-ings. We do some things in a Methodist way, some in an Anglican way, and some in a Tickton
way. Some church ‘rules’ are very odd indeed. But these are only the surface – and every club or society has its ‘little ways’. Underneath it all we are here as the church, and we do what we do as Christians, because we believe that God’s love is for everyone, and that God’s healing, and forgive-ness and cleansing and life are available to every-one, however unworthy they might feel. To be
the church is to offer ourselves to our community, to serve the poor and the rich, the ill and the well, and to point to the love of God through Jesus Christ. The last of my ‘rules’ in the book says of the Chris-tian ministry: ‘No, it’s not a job. Yes, it’s the best in the world.’ To offer
prayer for people, to bless them and to pray for them is an amazing and humbling privilege. I’m so glad to be able to do that in Tickton. And I hope that you’ll appreciate the love and service of all God’s people here, as we aim to follow Christ.

Garage Sale By the time you read this our second Garage Sale will be history. As I write, we have over 30 ga-rages involved; thanks to all those who are taking part for their support: we hope you had a suc-cessful and enjoyable day. Thanks also to church members who helped on the day, and to June for her tireless efforts in organising the event.

Flower Demonstration
Following the successful event held in 2011, the team from Glenholme Florists is coming out again to Tickton to demonstrate their formidable skills in floral art. The arrangements they make will undoubtedly have a seasonal theme, and some will be auctioned off at the end of the eve-ning. The event will take place in St Paul’s church, and will start at 7.30 pm. We’re hoping to provide a glass of wine or alternative but don’t forget St Paul’s has no toilet, which is what we’re raising money for!
Tickets will go on sale in mid October and we hope you will be able to support us.
Youth Kaf
Youth Kaf dates for the autumn are Fridays Octo-ber 8th, November 13th and December 13th.
Following our successful bid for ERYC money, we have been able to buy quite a lot of new games equipment. Why not come along and join us, from 6.30 to 8 pm, if you’re in Y5 or upwards at school.?

Christmas Show
This takes place on Saturday December 7th. Tickets will be available from mid No-vember and further details will be on post-ers and on the church website.
Meanwhile, we needn a cast so if you’re aged 8 to 18 and would like to take part, come along to the Methodist Church on Monday October 7th at 6.30, or if you can’t make that, give Kate (542189) or Trish (544489) a ring, or speak to Pauline (Mrs Jeffery!) at school.
Services in November
Some slight changes are planned to accom-modate the Remembrance Sunday service,
which has become a Parade Service for the Brownies. It’s been decided that this will be an All-age Remembrance event, with no Holy Commun-ion. This will be on November 10th. The following Sunday, which would normally be All-age, will be Holy Communion.
These are the plans currently but things will be confirmed via posters, the weekly notices sheet (available to download from the website) or the website itself.

The New Inn Golf SocietyForest Pines Captain’s Weekend 19th and 20th July
What a good turn out and fabulous weather for Captain Chris Reeves’ weekend, we were blessed with a hot sunny day for the first day of singles to be played on Pines and Beeches, the two nine hole courses nomi-nated for the day. Following a short lunch Chris led us off into our first competition. Never a forgiving course the trees took their toll on some of us and others seemed to thread shots through the forest with skill. Eventually Dougie Lloyd and Barry Leake (Joint First) showed great ability winning the day with 30 Stableford points followed by Chris Reeves and Sam Barker with 25 points. Barry Leake won ‘Longest Drive’ and Geoff Gillyon ‘Nearest the Pin’.
Day two was so different, a cooler day with some cloud but pleasant nevertheless. We played in pairs, a formula arranged during a superb meal the previ-ous evening followed by a bit of merriment at the bar. Sadly our skipper was not at his best probably as a result of too much sun on Friday. However off to play Pines and Forest, our two nine hole courses for the day. It may have been a result of the late night but, although playing conditions were good, the golf suffered a bit. Not to be put off, Chris and Ian McKenzie came home with 38 points jointly winning the second day with Sam and Barry. Chris won ‘Longest Drive’ and ‘Nearest the Pin’ Scott Wil-liams. Overall Barry was the weekend champion and was presented with his prize by the Captain, as were all other worthy winners for the weekend.
We will in all probability repeat the experience next year as the venue at Q Hotels Forest Pines is excel-lent and completely set up for successful days out for us golfers.
Our next venue will be Mid Yorkshire Golf Club near Darrington on 20th September. If anyone would like to join us please contact Ian McKenzie on 01964501778 or [email protected]
Routh Church
A few things to report from Routh
In March this year Mrs Ann Sinkler retired as Treasurer of the All Saints PCC committee. She held this post for 50 years and was recognised for her long and devoted service by a citation sent by
both Archbishop Sentamu and the Bishop of Hull presented to her by the Archdeacon of the East Riding the Venerable David Butterfield after the Evensong Service. The citations were presented to her in two silver frames.
The Harvest Festival Service will be on Sunday 20th October presided over by our Priest in Charge Jeremy Fletcher
We have had the clock face and hands taken down and sent away to be cleaned, shot blasted and coated with an epoxy resin powder to pro-vide a continuous protection surface. The numer-als and hands have been further coated with dou-ble thickness gold leaf (23 3/4 cts)
Routh was without a clock for two months and is now resplendently back in situ and fully opera-tional on the church tower. See the pictures on page 2.
The clock is the village War Memorial remember-ing the servicemen who lost their lives during the first world war 1914-1919. A plaque naming the servicemen from the village is sited on the side wall near the church tower.
This undertaking was funded by the War Memo-rial Trust and by private donations.

Letter to the Editor
Hi,
Just noticed a lot of horse muck left in the middle of our
small cul-de-sac here at Tickton Meadows. This is a
small street with cars and small children running around,
and we, as neighbours, have dogs; we all clear up after
them but the horse muck gets left and then it is all over
shoes etc.
Mouse games Becoming familiar with the mouse is one of the first steps for a beginner. Playing the game Soli-taire is not the only way people can have fun while learning how to drag, drop and click. Digital Unite has a good website to help absolute begin-ners with using the different sorts of mice: http://digitalunite.com/guides/computer-basics/how-use-mouse And having a few games up your sleeve is useful to help any beginner.

Brain Training
Brain fitness involves many types of brain train-
ing including reflection tests, memory tests, IQ
tests, spatial intelligence, reflex actions and
brain stretching and creativity. Working through
these type of activities can stimulate all the
major areas of your brain and keep your skills
sharpened. And like physical exercise, the more
you neglect a certain area the more it will
show.
Brain fitness is recommended for everyone and
not just for those ageing or who have memory
loss. As we grow older and more information is
accumulated and stored on our brains we need
to train our minds to retain information so we
can retrieve it when we need it.
One of the popular ways to carry out Brain
Training is to use a Nintendo DS or a Wii. But if
you haven't got one of the gaming devices you
can still try brain training online.
Try typing in “Tower of Hanoi”, “Brain Fitness”
or “Luminosity” into Google and see the games
that come up. Other brain challengers (logic,
physics, maths, quick thinking etc) can be
found here: http://www.websudoku.com/ and

There is no where for the horses to go (we’re a cul-de

A bit of thought for the people living here would be
much appreciated

Lifestylers’ Petition
Just a note to say thank you to everyone who has signed our petition (see below) to try and get a ze-bra crossing or parking restrictions or zig-zag lines on the road close to school. We have done this as part of ‘Lifestyle’. We have knocked on every door in the village and we are sorry if you weren’t in or were on holiday as some of you were.
Something needs to be done outside school as we can’t cross the road safely. It is an accident waiting to happen and we don’t want anybody to get hurt. The school and all the teachers have been very supportive and the headteacher, Miss Brown, is always addressing parking issues in the weekly Newsletter. Councillor Birmingham and our MP Graham Stuart have also been very supportive. They asked us to do a rally which over 50 people attended. We are trying our best to make this hap-pen.
Once again, thank you for your support.
The Three Ticktoneers:
Daniel, Ben and Jack, aged 10
Two of the Mums write:
The boys have worked incredibly hard on this life-
style project and as parents we are all incredibly
proud of their determination and achievements so
far, not only have they rallied to get support they
have come up with alternatives for the council to
consider if a crossing is not going to happen.
Please can we also thank everyone for their sup-
port and we will keep you posted on how they
have done! So far we have over 500 names on the
petition!!.
See pictures on pages 2 and 31.
Lest we forget…
It was on 24th August 1943 in the early hours of
the morning, when two Halifax Bombers returning
from operations over Berlin to their home base at
Breighton, were diverted to Leconfield due to bad
weather. Unfortunately they collided in thick fog in
mid-air above the then New Holland Farm be-
tween Tickton and Weel at Hull Bridge. All but one
died in the terrible accident. The villagers at the
time rushed to assist in any way they could. There
are few left of the villagers now who can remem-
ber this event. Research undertaken revealed that
these Airmen are not on any other memorial of
the time, other than their headstones, making the
memorial on Hull Bridge even more important. In
true point of fact, it was even foggy on the morn-
ing of the dedication service!
Exactly 70 years to the day, a service of dedication
was organised by Cllr Tony Walker and held by the
Rev Ray Coates to mark the occasion. The service
was very well attended - In fact we ran out of the
Order of services we had printed! During the ser-
vice young and old alike stood shoulder to shoul-
der to remember the sacrifice our Armed Forces
have made for us.
The day had been spotted with showers and yet,
as the allotted time arrived, the sun shone and a

November 18 – Dabble Day: try your hand at a craft or skill that is new to you and learn different techniques.
You will be welcome at any or all of the above in the Methodist Chapel at 7.30pm so why not make this the autumn you really do sample something new?
Our members have been feverishly produc-ing traybakes by the dozen for the refresh-ments at the WI@Tickton Harvest Market in the village hall on Saturday, 28th September, which we hope you will all visit and enjoy.

The WI@Tickton is for any women who have a lively mind and want to broaden their horizons, and the or-ganisation is shaped by the members, so if you have a preconceived idea about what the WI is all about come along and see whether this is accurate or not.

. . . Beverley Minster & websites
As readers will know, our ‘Church in Tickton’ is associated with both Beverley Minster (and its other associ-ated churches in Woodmansey and Molescroft) and the Beverley Methodist Circuit (with its three churches Toll Gavel, Norwood and Walkington, about which more in future editions).
Beverley Minster has a website which is stuffed full of things and is well worth exploring—just Google Bever-ley Minster. You can find out what’s on and download various publications, including the ‘What’s On’ leaflet showing events for the current quarter, and the Magazine (though to really support the Minster you need to buy a paper copy!)
If you have never been to the Minster as a tourist, then you should remedy that soon! It’s a stunning medieval building, tall, graceful and full of light. And it’s free (though contributions to help defray the £1200 a day run-ning costs are welcomed!) If you want some idea of what it’s like, go to the website and navigate to the Vir-tual Tour, which is rather good.
If you are a Christian wor-shipper but have never been to a service at the Minster, again, you should remedy this soon. On the website events, including worship, are well-advertised, and you can also download the weekly notice sheet which give details of the next week’s services, (and lots of other things). One way of ex-periencing the Minster is to go to a special service, per-haps on Advent Sunday in the evening, or on Remembrance Sunday evening, when the excellent choir sing some-thing special.
Alongside is a picture of Emily Hoe, the new Youth Minister in Beverley Min-ster Parish. She has been working as a missionary abroad (which is where the picture, taken from the current Minster Magazine, was taken). She took up post at the start of September and we’re hoping she will work with us in Tick-ton for part of her time, alongside Claire, the Methodist Children and Families Worker, and our two clergy.
This gives just a small taste of what Beverley Minster is about. Do go to the website and explore, and to the building itself too, even get involved.
Meanwhile, The Church in Tickton is here for the village of Tickton, and a warm welcome awaits you. And we have a website too!

Top: MP Graham Stuart meets the Three Ticktoneers and their many supporters at the rally in support of the petition for more traffic measures near the school. Above and opposite: The unveiling of the memorial plaque at Hull Bridge (see page 16)
The School Council had the brilliant idea of making an aerial photo to spell out the message as part of the
‘Send my Friend to School’ campaign, which aims to provide teachers for over 57 million children worldwide
who do not have access to education. Thanks to Mr Peter Spencer of Hull Aero Club, Leven, this idea be-
came a reality.
(Left) The children in Y1-Y3 sent this entry to the Driffield
Show, showing the range of vegetables and herbs we have grown
in school. We have grown so much this year that we are able to
use the vegetables in the school lunches.
(Above, right) The children in Y5 & Y6 went on their residential visit to Northumberland in the last week of
term. It was a very busy week, with visits to Bamburgh, Alnwick and Dunstanburgh castle as well as the
Alnwick Treehouse! We had fantastic weather and were able to get onto the beach every night. The chil-
dren had a brilliant time and were excellent ambassadors for the school.
