Processing Notes Processed by Deanna Belch and H. Connor, December

2015.

Historical Note Tickets are a type of a receipt. They are used to entitle the

holder to a service such as entertainment or transportation

or they can be a record of a transaction. Metal tokens

remain from ancient Rome. Subsequent tickets have been

made of ivory, semi-precious metals and beginning in the

18th century forward tickets have been printed on paper,

card stock or paste board.

Admission tickets are generally, those that have the word

admit printed on them along with a number or a space or

name or names. Admission tickets are different than tickets

that are received as a receipt for a service. According to

Maurice Rickards, they are document of up-coming

ceremonial events such as a coronation or wedding as well

as concerts, entrance to exhibitions, zoos, and other places

of interest and entertainment.1 Tickets come in many forms,

from elaborate to simple. They are ephemeral in nature,

generally being torn in half to prevent their reuse. Passes

provide privileged access and are associated with the

implication of special exception.2

In the late 19th century, coupons were used as a marketing

tool to create and maintain product mass demand. As an

inducement scheme, consumers were rewarded for their

product loyalty with a coupon. Coupon gifts were designed

to be collected and later exchanged by patrons for a

“present.” This practice originated in 1851 by soap maker

Benjamin Babbitt of New York.

Description of the Papers

predominately a collection of circus ephemera. Admission

tickets are the greatest portion of the collection. There are
