and all the vendors in one place. I also like sitting in

What I Do“I’ve always been involved with municipal waterand sewer. This is the wave of the future. Waterand sewer will always be there. That’s why I’min it. I recently retired as a sewer jet operator.I’m going to miss the job, but I’mpreparing to move so I had to leave.I’d be a jet operator again, but I’m alsothinking about starting my own business —pumping or doing portable restrooms.”

“I retired last year after 30 years and I’m looking for

my next job or business. I’m here to look at all the new

technology and see what my next adventure is going to be.

I went to the show when it was in Louisville, but I haven’t

been to it since it moved to Indianapolis. I haven’t decided

exactly what I want to do, but this is the place to come to

    make that decision.”

1980 was perhaps one of the most stellar years in

    movie-making history — five modern-day clas-

sics: The Shining, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes

Back, Airplane!, Caddyshack, and The Blues Brothers were all in theaters. Allof these movies hold up remarkably well some 35 years later. Simply ex-

claim, “It’s in the hole!” or confirm anything with a man named Roger

by replying “roger, Roger” and you won’t stare back at a tilted head with

a confused look, but most likely a nodding smirk. Like these classic flicks,

the WWETT Show has proved enduring as well.

In early 1981, likely inspired by Jake and Elwood Blues,  Pumper maga-

zine and COLE Publishing founders Bob Kendall and Pete Lawonn drove

to Nashville in tan polyester suits and held the first Liquid Waste Hauler’s

Show. It was set up in a small, dimly lit exhibit hall at the Opryland Hotel

with a couple dozen vendors and a hundred or so attendees. Today, that

entire event would fit squarely into the exhibit space some companies hold

solely for themselves ... with room to spare. We’ve moved beyond vendors

peddling plywood restrooms and steel septic tanks to some of the world’s

most technically advanced equipment for collecting, treating and trans-

    porting wastewater.

This is the only place in North America where it all comes together un-

der one roof. The people. The equipment. The networking. The education.

The atmosphere. It is all here and we are thrilled to have you as part of it.

Get out and meet colleagues, shake hands, kick tires, and most important ...

give yourself a pat on the back — the 35th annual WWETT Show is your

opportunity to interact with thousands of other proud, passionate water

    and wastewater professionals.

“It’s a Cinderella story. Outta nowhere. A former greenskeeper, now,

about to become the Masters Champion.” Thank you for 35 outstanding

years — here’s to feeling like the Masters Champion.

World Health OrganizationTalk Set for Today Vlugman will discuss survival and life expectancy of

communicable diseases in water and wastewater

Since the Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa hit the

headlines, many in the wastewater industry have asked

about the potential for various communicable diseases to

spread through the pumping, transport and handling of septage

and sludges containing human waste. Attendees at the 2015 Water

& Wastewater Equipment, Treatment & Transport Show have theopportunity to hear the latest information on the topic from a

    World Health Organization official.

Dr. Adrianus Vlugman, WHO senior advisor on water, sani-

tation and environmental health, will speak today, at 1 p.m. in

Rooms 133-135 at the Indiana Convention Center as part of an

extensive series of WWETT Show speakers and seminars. The

talk on the transfer of communicable diseases is free and open toanyone.

Vlugman will provide a general overview covering the survival

and life expectancy of communicable diseases in water and waste-

water. Among other topics, he will cover:

      • Safety precautions to consider when handling water

    and wastewater in developing nations.

      • The likelihood of communicable diseases to be spread or

passed through both centralized wastewater plants and

    decentralized onsite wastewater systems.

      • Whether there is a concern for the spread of

communicable diseases through land application of

properly treated sewage, biosolids or septage.

Space for this presentation is limited.

The WWETT Show Afterglow Once you’re back in the offi ce, it’s time to reflect

on what you learned and put it into action

    By Judy Kneiszel

Spending a few days away from home at the Water &

Wastewater Equipment, Treatment & Transport (WWETT)

Show can make a big difference in the day-to-day operation

of your company all year. While you’re busy catching up on what

you missed while in Indy, take time to consider all the ways you

benefited from the experience. Ask yourself these questions

and you’ll no doubt find the answers point to doing it all again

    next year.

Did you learn anything?  If you attended any Education Day seminars, then the time

away from your business was most certainly worth it. The goal

of these seminars is to help improve your technical performance,

customer service, employee development, and overall quality of

life for you and your company. Many states approve specified ses-

sions within the educational program for your required continu-

ing education units or professional development hours. If thatapplies to you, not only did you learn something, you fulfilled a

requirement while being uninterrupted by the daily grind of run-

    ning a business.

Even if you didn’t attend Education Day, you probably still

learned plenty at the event. With 560,000 square feet of exhibit

space filled by more than 500 exhibitors, odds are good you saw

new and potentially helpful products for your business. Or maybe

you got a firsthand understanding of a product or technology you

didn’t understand previously. Some people are visual learners

and seeing the exhibits is an education in itself. Others are verbal

learners and take advantage of having the product experts on

    hand in the booths.

Did you buy anything?  Maybe you learned so much about a product or technology

that you bought it right at the show. That’s the case for 81 percent

of attendees who report making a purchase or firming up a pur-

chase decision because of what they saw at WWETT. Or maybe

the information you gained prompted you to plan for a new

equipment purchase later in the year. Meeting face to face with

expert representatives from companies is a valuable benefit of

attending a trade show. And, yes, sometimes vendors offer special

    discounts or “show prices.”

Did you meet anyone?  Maybe you met the editor of PRO. Maybe you met the person

you’ve been talking to on the phone for years when you called a

supplier. It’s nice to put a face with a name and a business card in

your pocket. Maybe six months from now you’ll remember thatChad from Columbus was dealing with the same issue you’re deal-

ing with. You’ll dig up his card, or search your phone for the con-

tact info you scanned in at the show and dial. Sure, he remembers

you and he would be glad to share how things turned out for him

in this situation in order to help you deal with your problem. You

never know when “who you know” is going to come in handy.

    Did you gain anything intangible?

When you work in an industry viewed by some as a “dirty job,”attending a trade show can be a huge ego boost. Did you take any

employees or family members to the show for the first time, and

were they amazed? It can be fun to see a person suddenly “get”

how big and important your industry is. That newfound indus-

Enthusiasm is contagious, so take the time to share what you learnedand the insight you gained at the WWETT Show with the rest of thepeople in your office.

try pride translates into pride in a job well done upon returning

home. Instead of having to endure potty jokes from some folks

back home, the businesses around the Indiana Convention Center

treated you with immense respect. And there’s just something

about networking with fellow contractors that refreshes one’s

    enthusiasm for the industry.

Did you boost your street cred?  Another intangible gained from attending a trade show is an

air of professionalism. Customers who called when you were gone

and were informed that you were at the show probably came away

thinking, “Wow, he really takes his business seriously. He’s a real

professional.” Some contractors get even more mileage out of thetrip to Indy by sending a brief press release about it to the local

paper’s business section sharing the news that a local company

owner attended a major national trade show. Posting to social

media about the show can also get the word out.

Did you solve a problem?  Being in a room full of people who do what you do means

there’s a great wealth of knowledge to tap into. Sure, Education

Day seminars and exhibitors are great sources of information, butso are the other contractors you met at breakfast, in the hotel lob-

by, or on the exhibit floor. Part of that “we’re all in this together”

mentality is a willingness to share experiences and help fellow

contractors solve problems. With 13,000 people from 45 countries

in attendance at WWETT, countless problems are solved each

    year. Maybe even yours.

Did you have any fun?  Attending a trade show isn’t all about work. It’s also about

relaxing at the end of the day with peers and toasting the industry

that brought you together. It’s about sharing stories and having a

laugh with people who understand you and what you do. That’s

why the WWETT Show agenda always includes the Industry

Appreciation Party with beverages and live music. If you go to the

show every year, you’ll find you really look forward to seeing someof the same people every year. It’s always fun to reconnect with

friends you’ve made in the industry, and make some new friends

    each year, too.

So enjoy the rest of the show, and mark your calendar for 2016

… because your friends will be here!

Integrated Chassis Solutions ICS’s first product, SKY-VACTM, is an industry-changing product

that extends the reaches of the excavation and extraction market. SKY-VACTM can be used in conjunction with any existing wet vac or dry vacsystem in the market (Model #: SV-120-1), or can operate as its own,stand-alone, hydro-excavation machine (Model #: SV-120-2). With this

machine, the excavation tip can safely reach over 120 feet in any directionhorizontally, 126’ vertical up, and 86’ below grade from its setup posi-tion. This machine and its technology specifically solves the problem oflimited accessibility that the excavation and extraction industry has hadto battle with in years past. This product has many applications that in-clude any hard-to-reach infrastructure systems (pipelines, transmission,

fiber-optic, water, sewer, etc.), refineries, oil and gas applications, mining, and many more. For more information on how your company can be onthe leading edge in the excavation and extraction industries, see the ICSteam in booth 4245, or check out our website www.ics-vac.com.

Thepatent-pending Quick-Change System™ incor-

porates a moveable collar that lets contractors quickly and easily switchbetween three rugged, interchangeable heads. The system eliminates theneed to carry multiple, dedicated tools to the jobsite or completely switchfrom one tool to the next, which increases efficiency and maximizesproductivity.

SR-24 Line Locator   The RIDGID® SeekTech SR-24Line Locator streamlines the creation ofaccurate maps of underground utilitiesto help prevent accidents and serviceinterruptions. Using integrated Blue-

tooth® communications, it transmitslocating data to a third-party surveygrade GPS or a mobile device. Data-log-ging capabilities allow the user to recordGPS and locating data to an onboardmicro SD card. In addition to Omni-Seek® passive locating capabilities, theSR-24 can be programmed to detect anyactive frequency from 10 Hz-35 kHz.Its omnidirectional antennas capturethe complete signal field. When paired

with the SR-24, the free RIDGIDtraxapp displays GPS position and depthof the target utility on a real-time map.A user can identify the type of utilityand display multiple utilities. A completed map can be saved and viewedinside the app or exported to a universal file format for use with popularGIS programs such as Google Earth™.

B-500 Pipe Beveller   RIDGID® recently introduced the B-500 Transportable Pipe Bevel-

ler, which produces a consistent, high-quality bevel in less than two min-utes* without flames or sparks, replacing traditional beveling methodssuch as grinding. The B-500 is a compact and transportable unit thateasily mounts to the end of pipes four inches or greater in diameter, witha maximum wall thickness of a half-inch, as well as on flat plates up to ahalf-inch thick. Interchangeable heads allow bevels to be cut accurately at30 degrees, 37.5 degrees or 45 degrees. The unit features speed monitor-ing with LED indicator lights that assist the operator in keeping thebeveller moving at an optimal pace. This ensures a consistent, machined-finished bevel in a single pass. The compact design allows a single opera-tor to set up and createbevels in less time. The overall feature setallows a user of anyskill level to produce ahigher quality finish,as compared to using atorch.
