What is Title One/ Basic Skills Instruction?****Teacher /Parent Introductions
• Pull-Out , small group Supplemental instruction in Mathematics
and English Language Arts Literacy (ELA)
• Provides specific targeted instruction to students who are
experiencing some difficulty with grade level curriculum.
• Reinforces specific skills instruction through targeted strategies
working to reinforce what is taught in class.
• An educational opportunity for students above and beyond typical
programming.
• More individualized in structure to meet needs of students
• Overall goal of program is to help students learn skills and utilize
strategies, to work towards meeting appropriate grade level
expectations in accordance with the New Jersey Student Learning
Standards (NJSLS)
• Some funding through Title I of ESEA (Elementary and Secondary
Education Act) is used toward the Basic Skills Instruction Program
Components of Program
Individual Student Instructional Plans (ISIP)
Skills within each subject area are analyzed
Instructors confer and input is noted from classroom teachers
Individual student goals are set (ISIP) for targeted skills based on
input and analysis of data
• Instruction in addition to classroom instruction
•Parental notification and involvement
Individual Student Instructional Plans (ISIP) sent home for parent
to review and return signed
Student Progress reported–via emails , collaboration with teacher
toward on line report card grades

Basic Skills Selection Process
Entrance and Exit Tool Criteria Forms (Rubrics)-completed by past and
present classroom teachers to collaborate and submit to administration
for selection, then to teachers for instructional purposes and review
ELA (English/Language Arts( GradesK-5)
•Instructor reviews student data: of past assessments, class grades,
classroom performance, past report cards grades, as well as teacher
input

Here is a brief synopsis of the Tiers.
TIER #1 –General Classroom provides all students with a high-quality learning environment , using evidence-
based curriculum as well as BEST Practices.
Tier # 2- Push In/Pull Out provides supplemental supports and interventions that are delivered in small-
group instruction, provided during an intervention
period. Interventions include evidence –based
instructional programs, practices, strategies, and
philosophies. Intensity and frequency, as well as
duration is based on teacher input, student
performance , and past and current data. Programs
and strategies utilized are from the following
researched- based programs: Reading: LLI (Leveled
Literacy Intervention) , (V&V) Visualize and Verbalize,
and WRS Wilson Reading System (3-4-5 )/,Fundations
(K-2) (Double Dose). Tecnhology includes the use of the Max Scholar Program and Raz Kids. Math: EnVision
Intervention Kit and PARCC Practice. Technology
includes Tenmarks, MobyMax, and Sum Dog.

Title l/Basic Skills
NOTE: Kindergarten Book Club begins in February after first (DRA)-
Developmental Reading Assessment and (WIA) Word Identification Assessment is
completed and other assessment data is collected.
•Book Club-
**ELA Grades (Grades K-5 Book Clubs) meet for individual reinforcement of
SKILLS and STRATEGY lessons in small Guided Reading groups.
•Math Club-
**(Grades 1-5) Review of Envision Math lessons, offering repetition and
reinforcement of SKILLS and STRATEGIES in small groups & PARCC Practice in
grades 3-5.

The Riverdale School and the parents of its students who participate
in the Title I / Basic Skills program are in agreement that this
compact outlines the shared responsibilities of the parents, school
staff, and the students for improving student academic achievement.
This school-parent compact is in effect during the 2017-2018 school
year.

Riverdale’s Title I/Basic Skills Improvement Program has been
designed to provide opportunities for students to acquire and develop
the knowledge and skills necessary, in order to achieve the state’s
challenging New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS),
which were developed for all students.
School Responsibilities
The Riverdale School will:
• Ensure high standards for all children and assist students in
reaching these standards in English Language Arts and
Mathematics.
• Provide Title I / Basic Skills students with an enriched educational
program, based upon research and effective instructional
approaches.
• Provide targeted professional development experiences for
involved staff in order to improve the quality of instruction for the
Title I/Basic Skills students.
• Ensure that all teachers who work with our students meet the
state’s definition of highly qualified teachers.
• Coordinate Title I /Basic Skills services with the general education
program and other educational services provided in our school.
To insure on-going communication between parents and teachers, the school will:
• Hold a Title I Basic Skills Improvement Program meeting at least once annually
for the express purpose of informing parents/guardians of the Title I Basic Skills
Improvement Program and its activities, and will jointly develop the parent-school
compact for that school year.
• Develop Individualized plans (ISIPs) for students participating in the program to
be shared with parents.
• Instructor can be contacted by phone or email
• Provide parent instructional/informational session on Title One/ Basic Skills
(Thursday, October 12th, 2017).
Parent/Guardian Responsibilities
Parents will support our children’s learning in the following ways:
• Monitoring school attendance.
• Insuring that classroom homework is completed. Including nightly
Reading Logs.(Basic Skills does not assign any additional homework).
• Monitoring the amount of time for television/computer time watched in
the home.
• Participating, as appropriate, in decisions relating to my child’s
education.
• Staying informed about my child’s education and communicating with
the school.
• Reading and responding to notices/information sent home or posted on
the district website: www.rpsnj.org
• Promoting positive use of my child’s extracurricular time.
• Participating, to the extent possible in meetings held to support my
child’s learning and to inform the district’s program (i.e. Parent
Conferences).
• Encouraging a positive attitude towards school and learning.
• Providing a regular time and a quiet place to study and read.
• Enriching my child’s background through conversation and experience.
Parents recognize that a positive self-image of their child will
contribute to their success and agree to help their child develop a
positive self- image by:
• Reading nightly with my child for enjoyment and to practice
skills/strategies learned in school.
• Providing age appropriate responsibilities for my child at home.
• Establishing routines at home.
• Giving praise for my child’s accomplishments.
• Spending time together.
• Encouraging attempts at new things. Taking learning RISKS.
• Disciplining, when needed.
• Providing support when my child is frustrated.
• Setting realistic goals.
• Showing interest in my child’s work. Reviewing work sent home.
• Keeping an open dialogue with my child.
Suggested Opportunities for Parent Involvement:
• Attend Parent/Teacher conferences.
• Attend school programs and activities.
• Become a member of the PTA. Attend PTA meetings.
• Attend Board of Education meetings.

Student Responsibilities
Students share the responsibility to improve our academic
achievement and achieve the State’s high standards by:
• Coming to school and classes ready to learn.
• Doing my homework/assignments from homeroom classes
(including nightly Reading Log) . (No additional
homework assigned from Basic Skills).
• Asking for help when needed.
• Getting enough sleep.
• Following school rules.
• Showing respect for my school, its staff, and my parents.
• Making sure my parents get the notices that are sent home.
• Staying organized.
